St. Thomas Yacht Charters board in St. Thomas, a U.S. Territory, which is the gateway isle of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean and is a home port to many luxury crewed charter yachts located in Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. With frequent flights from the U.S., St. Thomas is a convenient port in which to start all crewed St. Thomas yacht charters to cruise the U.S. and the British Virgin Islands.

Originally colonized by the Dutch West India Company in the mid 1600’s; soon after, Denmark-Norway conquered the island and by 1672 had established control through the Danish West India and Guinea Company. St. Thomas, and the adjacent islands of St. John and St. Croix were divided into plantations with sugar cane as the predominant crop. In 1691, the primary settlement on the island was renamed Charlotte Amalie in honor of the wife of Danish King Christian V. Charlotte Amalie is today the capital city of the USVI.

Over several centuries the sugar trade gradually declined. A local islander, David Hamilton Jackson, persuaded Denmark to sell the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix to the U.S. in 1917, given the harbors and fortifications of St. Thomas, which was felt by the United States to be of strategic importance.

Today, St. Thomas is a thriving yacht and cruise ship port, with a busy harbor in Charlotte Amalie, where there are several yacht marinas, and is also a Duty-Free Port with a busy downtown Duty-Free shopping area along with a Cruise Ship Mall filled with additional Duty-Free shops. Surrounding the island are beautiful beaches and bays. Inland, there are many hotels and restaurants from which to choose, as St. Thomas today, caters to Tourism, and is considered a resort island for those hankering for vacations in warm climates with beautiful waters.

Often guests fly into St. Thomas to board their charter yacht to cruise to St. John and from there to cruise to the British Virgin Islands. However, if you do spend several days on the island before or after your charter there is plenty to see and do.

What to Do and See in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Caribbean

Frenchtown: Settled by Huguenots that immigrated to St Thomas from St-Barths during the mid-19th century, this little community that popped up is comprised of brightly painted frame houses on the harbor’s western side. Today stroll the streets of Frenchtown to enjoy the architecture of this little neighborhood which is also home to several good restaurants.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie: Filled with Duty Free Shops selling jewelry, and liquor, there are also shops with local St. Thomas and other Caribbean Island goods. Wander along the street ringing the harbor, and the street one block behind, both of which house the main shopping area.

Drake’s Seat: Along the top of the island are fantastic views over the Caribbean Sea and the British Virgin Islands. The most popular lookouts are Drake’s Seat and Skyline Drive Overlook. Drake’s Seat was built in 1933 by Arthur Fairchild as a location to rest, as in those days trekking over the high hills on the island was by horse or foot. Today, Drake’s Seat is a fabulous location for aerial photos.

Magen’s Bay: Considered by many to be one of the nicest bays in the Caribbean, Magen’s Bay, located on the north coast, is a great location to enjoy the beach, swimming and snorkeling.

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden: This garden is 2 acres that are filled with blooming orchids, bromeliads, lilies, palms, and more. Relax in the Balinese gazebo and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding natural world, and the wild and bird life of parrots, tortoises, peacocks and chickens.

Sky Ride to Paradise Point

Sky Ride to Paradise Point: For a true overview of St. Thomas Harbor, ride this cable car 700 feet above Charlotte Amalie. In 7 minutes, be at the top of Flag Hill for a stunning view of Charlotte Amalie Harbor. Once at the top, enjoy the Restaurant & Bar at Paradise Point (Home of the Bailey’s Bushwacker”) for a variety of frozen drinks with a lite fare menu, and explore the various shops.

While often the boarding and disembarking port for a yacht charter to cruise through the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas has much to offer as a Caribbean Island, including being one of only a few Duty-Free Ports in the Caribbean. Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware. 

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

BVI Yachting Season

A good destination year-around except for hurricane season which runs from June to end of November. High season for a BVI yacht charter is from mid-December to the end of April.

The Virgin Islands are in a state of constant summer, with ideal weather and temperatures all year long. With very little change in seasons, you can rent a yacht in the islands virtually year-round and still expect sunshine, warm temperatures, and cooling breezes.

• Summer (June to November): It’s hot with an average temperature around 89ºF and the sea is around 82ºF. It can be humid with unstable weather as it’s tropical storm/hurricane season. Winds are southeasterly between 10 and 20 knots.

• Winter (December to May): You’ll find daily average temperature around 86ºF, but it’s cooler at night around 68ºF. The seas are warm around 78ºF and the weather is stable. Winds are easterly and northeasterly between 15 and 25 knots.

BVI Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

Motor yachts are the most popular choice for BVI boat charters, and there is an extensive selection of motor yachts for hire, from tri-deck superyachts, to smaller pilothouse motor yachts.

Motor yachts offer several advantages over sailing yachts. Speed is a key benefit; since you aren’t relying on wind, you can typically access more stops during your trip. Additionally, motor yachts tend to be the most luxurious and spacious available. That means more onboard amenities (e.g. hot tubs, swim platforms, skylounges), as well as more privacy.

The British Virgin Islands are an incredible destination for a catamaran charter , and as such, guests will find a wide variety of catamarans – both sailing and power cats – for charter in the BVI.

British Virgin Islands catamarans offer several advantages over traditional monohull sailing and motor yachts. Catamarans, for example, tend to be more stable with very little heel. Tortola in the British Virgin Islands

The largest island of the BVI, Tortola’s landscape is a mix of tropical greenery, mountains, and white sandy beaches. Every month, Trellis Bay on Beef Island holds a Full Moon Party, and if you’re sailing on one of these dates, you’ll definitely want to attend.

Vendors line the beach selling arts and crafts, local restaurants offer spectacular buffets and BBQs, and partygoers enjoy live shows and live calypso music. Then, at midnight when the party’s in full swing, a giant fireball is lit in Trellis Bay.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in the British Virgin Islands?

Many factors affect charter rates in the BVI, including the type of vessel, the number of guests, and the time of year you plan to visit.

In general, the majority of sailing yachts in the BVI use all-inclusive rates ; sailing yachts typically range from $20,000 to $40,000 per week. Motor yachts, on the other hand, use “plus expenses” rates. This means guests pay a weekly rate – which starts at roughly $40,000 – as well as any expenses, including fuel, dockage costs, taxes and other expenses.

One of the most significant factors affecting charter rates is the season. New Year’s and Christmas are prime charter seasons in the BVI, and as such, guests can expect to see a 10-15% premium in costs.

Do charters start in St Thomas or Tortola?

St. Thomas (U.S.) is just 15 nautical miles from Tortola, which makes St. Thomas a popular launching point for BVI yacht charters. Depending on which yacht you charter, your vacation may launch from St. Thomas or Tortola. Consult with your broker to learn more about where your preferred yacht is located. Ultimately, St. Thomas and nearby St. John are ideal stops on a BVI yacht charter. Both islands offer their own unique sights and attractions, and many BVI charters will stop at one or both of these U.S. islands.

What day of the week can I start my charter?

You can start your charter on any day of the week. Your charter itinerary is personalized to your needs, and can be adjusted to whichever day is most convenient to you.

Are cruising taxes included in the charter fee?

It depends. Some boats include cruising taxes in their rates, while others add these fees on. Your charter broker will help you understand the exact fee structure before your charter begins.

In the British Virgin Islands, cruising taxes are charged to charter yachts, which includes a $50 flat fee, as well as a $16 fee charged per day per guest. This includes the National Park fee, as well as Virgin Island Search and Rescue (VISAR) contributions.

CAPTAIN SHERMON SMITH

Captain Shermon Smith was born and raised on St. Thomas. He learned how to drive a boat at eleven years old while fishing with his father around the waters of St. Thomas and St. John. After spending his college years in Miami, he decided to return to the island and immediately began working back on the water. Before moving on to captain Singularity, Shermon owned and ran a power boat day charter business as well as a jet ski tour agency. Shermon is a certified mechanic and engineer, and holds a 100 ton Master’s License. When he’s not running boats on the water Shermon enjoys spending time with his son and their animals.

FIRST MATE, EMMA CHASIN

First Mate Emma Chasin was born and raised outside of Boston, MA and spent her summers exploring the beaches of Cape Cod. After attending college in Rhode Island and graduating with a degree in Public Health, Emma moved to Washington, DC. It was only a few short years of working in health policy before she decided to pursue a life on the water. Emma spent her first boating season in the Mediterranean, sailing the waters surrounding Italy and Spain. She has lived in St. Thomas for nearly five years, where she has worked for several sailing and power boat companies. Emma is an avid sailor and has crewed multiple boat deliveries up and down the East Coast and into the Caribbean. Emma holds her 100 ton Master’s License. In her free time, she enjoys snorkeling, hiking, and cooking.

Sailing around the beautiful US Virgin Islands could not be easier!

Welcome aboard! Boarding times vary on the charter company. When you are ready to depart, you can enjoy a lovely sail over to Caneel Bay on St John, which is a perfect stop for an overnight for your first evening on board. This is a beautiful bay to enjoy an evening walk along the beach and enjoy some sundowners on the deck before dinner!

Wake up at your leisure and enjoy your coffee on the bow, take in the beautiful morning vistas. If you are feeling energetic, enjoy a quiet paddleboard along the shallow shores and experience the tranquillity of the Caribbean morning.  After breakfast, set sail and head to the famous Trunk Bay to explore the underwater world before lunch. Then off to Francis Bay or a little further east to Waterlemon Cay, Leinster Bay, St John, for the night. There are some great trails onshore to stretch out your sea legs, particularly the trail up to the Annaberg Plantation, which is in great condition and takes you back to the days of milling sugar cane to make rum.

In the morning, there is plenty of time for a lovely snorkel before you head off to Coral Harbor, located on the South-Eastern side of St John. Here, there is a fun, floating taco bar serving amazing tacos, you can dine in one of their large floating tables, pick up and dine on board or they will deliver to your yacht. If you head ashore to walk around, you will find the Calabash Market, in Johnson Bay where there are some souvenir shops, pottery shops and some clothing stores to browse around.  Lots of fun and good restaurants for dinner options too or have a short afternoon sail around to Hansen Bay for your overnight.

After breakfast, a nice short sail around the south point of St John to the turtle viewing hotspot – Lameshur Bay National Park. There is a great walking trail/hike called the Yawzi Point Trail for you to enjoy and stretch your legs. If the weather is good, you can head to a bay around the corner called Genti Bay and explore some more sugar mill ruins. If not, then a taxi can be arranged if you would like to see this historical site.   Head to Great Cruz Bay for your overnight anchorage.

Today would be a great day to take in some of the beautiful sites of St John – either taxi over or sail around to Cruz Bay which is the heart of St John.  Normally hustling and bustling with cruise ship activity, it is so quiet without the ships in port at the moment, a perfect time to go ashore! We can arrange an island tour for you to enjoy some of the beautiful National Parks sites that St John has to offer. This would be a great time to get some shopping in, and sample some of the local VI cultures and have a lovely lunch or dinner ashore or have a gentle afternoon sail across to overnight at Christmas Cove on Great Saint James Island, which homes the famous and award-winning floating restaurant Pizza Pi that serves amazing homemade Italian pizzas! Something different to see, for sure.

Sail to Water Island, which gets its name from being one of the few places in the Caribbean with freshwater ponds where sailing vessels of old could replenish their freshwater casks. You can get a ferry ashore to Crown Bay Marina if you would like to explore historical Frenchtown and Charlotte Amalie – also renowned for fabulous shopping and restaurants.  Or spend the day exploring by dinghy (but watch out for traffic in this busy area), getting yourself ready to think about packing up the boat to head back to the Marina.

Sail back to base to complete your charter, have your debrief and hand over the yacht, getting ready to head back to the Cyril E King Airport for the flight home (no further PCR tests are required for entry back to the US from the USVI).

This itinerary can be extended a few days to allow time to sail and explore Hans Lollik Island and Little Hans Lollik on the North of St Thomas; the beautiful Magen’s Bay, St Thomas and for the more adventurous sail west to the beautiful Spanish Virgin Islands of Culebra (where you will clear Customs), Culebrita, and Vieques.  Or sail South to the beautiful island of St Croix – or do both!

St. Thomas Yacht Charter Enquiry

There are no words to express how wonderful everything was. To begin, the crew was adorable. They were very discreet, which is very important, they were not often seen. Very polite and proper, but the best was their desire to please. The comfort of the boat was amazing. I have chartered many times and had never seen such spacious bathrooms. I loved it, closets and everything. There is different spaces to be in and people can relax alone which is most necessary. The only thing I would criticise is that there is no good area to sun bathe, the upper part with the spa pool is not very practical, but other than that everything was amazing. It was an amazing vacation and I thank you for that because you had a lot to do with it. We are both very grateful for all that you did. We shall be in touch for sure. Therefore, let’s explore where you can cruise on a USVI Yacht Charter.

St Thomas anchorages include the magnificent Megans Bay on the North coast. This pretty bay has a crescent shaped white sandy beach and is a great spot for watersports.

Honeymoon Bay on Water Island is a fantastic anchorage for an evening just off St Thomas. Because it also offers a white sandy crescent shaped beach with crystal clear turquoise waters to swim in. Besides that, if you are there on a Monday night you can even watch a movie on the beach, it’s great fun!

Christmas Cove on Great St James Island is a great spot to visit. Great St James Island is located to the east of St Thomas directly opposite the St Thomas Yacht Club. Besides that, this little cove has great snorkeling with lots of turtles.

St John in total contrast to its sister island of St Thomas is extremely chilled and laid back oozing with hippy chic! Cruz Bay is the main town and here you will find an abundance of tiny boutiques. Jewellery shops, gift shops and bars fill the tiny streets. Besides that, along the beach are some great restaurants.

Mooring off Caneel Bay is a firm favorite. At present the resort is closed, however the snorkeling is fantastic. Watch the turtles swim around your yacht. Snorkeling is great and you’ve got several beautiful white sandy beaches to explore. This area is within the VI National Park area. Besides that, there’s room for Superyachts to anchor in this great location.

Francis Bay

Francis Bay is a fantastic picturesque anchorage. Offering two spectacular beaches both Francis and Maho Beach are located here. Snorkeling along the rocks is fantastic and you often see the pretty Queen Angel Fish. Because this anchorage is large there is plenty of room for Superyachts to moor. Besides that, this area is within the VI National Park zone.

Hiking is great from Francis Bay. Because you can walk through to the disused Annaberg Sugar Mill. 

Waterlemon Bay

Waterlemon Bay offers both great snorkeling and hiking. Snorkel around Waterlemon Cay and stroll on the tiny white sandy spit. Besides that you can run ashore in the yachts dinghy and hike up to the Old School House. From here you can also walk to the Annaberg Sugar Mill and capture fantastic spots of the turquoise water in Mary Creek and of your luxury charter yacht in the bay. Besides that, you can hike along the Johnny Horn Trial to Coral Bay it’s a great hike and you can enjoy a cool beer when you arrive.

Wild donkeys can be seen on St John especially around the old sugar mill and in Coral Bay.
