A Look at the Hylas 47

Hylas 47 review.

The Hylas 47 was the precursor to the ever popular Hylas 49 and successor to Stevens 47, well known for their comfortable sea handling capabilities.  These are great, all-around racer/cruisers with a PHRF of 110, moderate draft, "intracoastal friendly" rigs and a significant measure of comfort for as many as six.

Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Queen Long Marine, the Hylas 47 is the perfect yacht for the planned world cruise. Comfortable and sea-kindly, special features include exceptional sailing performance combined with a wonderful feel and ease of handling in a variety of sea-states.  Making 200 nautical miles in a day is an easy day for the Hylas 47, the motion at sea is pleasant and comfortable. The cockpit is logically configured with the sheets, winches, and controls right where you'd want them to be - natural really. It is no wonder why Hylas choose to evolve the original design of the Stephens 47 and further incorporated its key characteristics into the Hylas 49 some years later. The design is stiff and well balanced, key characteristics of a swift boat.

Accommodations include dual passageways, three well-appointed staterooms, two heads with showers, a large sea-going galley, and main saloon beautifully finished in teak to the highest yacht standards. The main saloon offers great headroom, numerous opening ports, a centerline drop-leaf, teak table and settees to each side. The nav station is aft to starboard, with the galley opposite to port. One of the cleverer aspects of this interior arrangement is the dual access to the aft cabin. Aft of the nav station is the "walk-through" head. On the port side, the galley counter extends to the aft cabin doorway. The aft cabin is gracious, well lit, with good ventilation and features a centerline berth with storage to either side. Headroom is good. Space utilization is very clever as one would expect from Sparkman & Stephens. Overall fit and finish is excellent with satin varnished teak bulkheads, solid teak handholds, and teak and holly soles. While older boats, Hylas 47's tend to be well kept and an excellent value.

hylas 47 sailboat data

The Hylas 47 is an outstanding center cockpit sailing yacht that combines ease of handling with speed and exceptional livability, with her three staterooms/two head interior. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens as a fast and strong cruising yacht, she’s capable of crossing oceans while providing comfortable living at anchor.

Named by Sail Magazine as one of the best sailing vessels under 50 feet, ONEGIN has the classic Sparkman and Stephens styling. Built to the highest quality by Queen Long Marine she has a deep forefoot, long fin keel and full skeg hung rudder to deliver an exceptional seakindly and comfortable motion, as well as speed and well-balanced directional performance underway. The Hylas 47s hull design and ~43% ballast-to-displacement ratio support a well-earned reputation as a highly respected bluewater sailing vessel.

The Hylas 47 is the perfect yacht for a planned world cruise, a family summer cruising yacht, or a comfortable liveaboard. With her draft of 6’, she is comfortable cruising in the Bahamas, and with her air draft of 64’, she is ICW capable as well. ONEGIN has always been privately owned and has never been chartered.

ONEGIN’s current owners have cruised aboard her extensively in Europe, South America and the Caribbean. They have meticulously maintained and thoughtfully upgraded her to make her the perfect cruising yacht for a couple or family.

Upgrades include all new standing rigging (2019), new electronics including autopilot (2019/22/23), a new tender and outboard (2020), Yanmar diesel removed from boat and completely rebuilt in 2019.

ONEGIN has recently arrived in Newport and is very competitively priced. She is completely and immediately ready for her new owners to enjoy in New England, the Caribbean, or around the world!

Review of hylas 47

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.83 - 1.93 meter (6.00 - 6.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 4JH-TE diesel engine at 70 hp (52 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for hylas 47 is about 335 kg/cm, alternatively 1879 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 335 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1879 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 53m 2 (570 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

I thought that I posted a message yesterday, but don''t see it. This was my first time and if this is a duplicate, I apologize. My wife and I are looking at a Stevens 47 as a possible liveaboard and coastal cruiser. We''ve also looked at Morgans, Endeavours and Hardins in the mid 40''s, all center cockpits. I found no independent reviews on the internet re: Stevens 47. The Stevens 47 generally are more expensive and I wonder if it is worth the extra cost. I would appreciate any information on the Stevens or any advice concerning the others I mentioned. We will initially be living in the NE US and live aboard year round with short coastal cruises from there. Eventually, we will do the snow bird thing. Any help would be appreciated.

hylas 47 sailboat data

For the most part the Stevens 47, the Stevens are a better boat in almost all ways than mid- 40 foot range Morgans, Endeavours and Hardins. While some of the differences are subjective and relates to your own tastes and goals, in real tangable ways, the Steven''s offers better build quality with better materials, in most cases a more sophisticated hull design, offering better sailing performance and comfort of motion and nicer detailing. Whether that is worth $70-90K more is hard to say. Beyond that, as you get up to the $200K range there are a lot of really great boats out there. Jeff

Jeff, Thanks for the input. That''s exactly the kind of information I was looking for. John

Three years ago my wife and I purchased a 1981 Stevens 47. It was a bit of a project boat, but we couldn't be happier. It can be considered a true trade wind boat. While it may not point like a 'J', it really loves a good reach. We do a lot of weekend trips and week long vacations out of Portsmouth RI and usually like to have guests on board. That is where the 3 cabin, 2 heads come in handy. Close quarter maneuvering is an issue with the modified full keel. We are in a very tight marina, and before adding a bow thruster, we had to spring the boat out of our slip. The boat has a very solid construction. This past year Sail Magazine ranked it as one of the 10 best blue water boats ever. It has a seakindly motion and nice wide side decks. Bridge clearance can be an issue depending on where you would keep it. The rig is 65' off the water. Our boat has a Harken sail slide system. It would be a real load hoisting the main without it. Tankage is excellant. 100 gallons for fuel and 250 gallons for water. Three sided engine access plus good access to all other systems.

hylas 47 sailboat data

Dennis..since we are here anyway on this old thread...I have a question. The Stevens 47 is similar in exterior looks to the Hylas 47 which I believe he also designed and which we sailed and loved on a charter back in the 90's. I have never seen a Steven's 47 in person. Have you seen both boats and if so can you comment on any differences?

hylas 47 sailboat data

I too have been looking at the Stevens 47. There was one for sale at Rouge Wave in Annapolis that sold and they have another one for sail down in the Carib. The one in the Carib is going 30K more than the the one sold here in the US. http://www2.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?&units=Feet&checked_boats=1407042&lang=en&slim=broker&&hosturl=roguewave&&ywo=roguewave & Good luck Fair Winds Melissa

Stevens 47 vs Hylas 47 The Stevens 47 was the predecessor to the Hylas. It is my understanding that they sold the molds to Hylas when they stopped producing the Stevens. I sailed on a Hylas as part of a charter around 1995. That was the boat that got me interested in a center cockpit design.

The Hylas and Stevens 47 are the same Sparkman & Stephens design built by the same yard in Taiwan, Queen Long Marine. Queen Long hired S&S to design the 47-footer for them right around 1981. Bill Stevens of Stevens Charters imported most of the original hulls, and they named her the Stevens 47. Later Queen Long Marine rebranded her as the Hylas 47 along with introducing other Hylas models. The real difference between these two is the rig. The Stevens has a beefier rig. The Hylas 47's are high quality as well but just a little less robustly equipped. These Stevens models have become cult boats and rightly so. The performance of these whether Hylas or Stevens is legendary. The hull shape and keel-rudder configuration make them surprisingly stiff and fast boats, well-balanced in any condition. A Hylas 49 model with a raised sheerline and sugar scoop stern is the current evolution of the 47.

Boat: plastic production boat, suitable for deep blue water ;)
, but noticed on predict-wind some polars, 44 and 54. Here is a copy of the 44.
But still wondering how accurate these polars are anyway. I guess the polars supplied by the manufacturer, show results with perfect fair bottom with new antifoul, new expensive and a very experienced .
I would say Hylas is in the top 10% for its size, without going to yachts.

real performance is to it against other . For monos that real performance is evaluated by a committee of experts and results in a Performance Handicap Rating (PHRF) number. It is not perfect, but it cuts down the bar talk. There are other handicapped systems, but they are expensive and not as widespread.

In my area of the world Catamarans rarely against each other, and I
am not familiar with a similar system for cats. There might be one, and I would be interested in hearing more about it, and where I could get the rating numbers for various designs.

Cats and almost never race against mono's. When they do, they are scored as a separate class. Any comparisons between cats and mono's are just bar talk.

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Hylas 42

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 19.6 suggests that the Hylas 42 will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 50.0 means that the Hylas 42 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 209, tells us the Hylas 42 is a moderate displacement cruiser, which means she'll carry all your cruising gear without it having a dramatic effect on her performance. Most of today's sailboats intended for offshore cruising fall into this displacement category.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 24.8 suggests that crew comfort of a Hylas 42 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a coastal cruiser with moderate stability, which is not encouraging news for anyone prone to seasickness.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 2.0 indicates that a Hylas 42 would not be the wisest choice of sailboat for ocean passage-making owing to the lower resistance to capsize in strong winds and heavy seas that is associated with sailboats with a CSF of 2.0 and above.

Any Questions?

Is the Hylas 42 still in production and, if not, when did production end and how many of these sailboats were built?

No, the Hylas 42 is no longer in production. Production ended in 1990 after 22 units were built.

What do owners of the Hylas 42 have to say about their boats?

Owners of the Hylas 42 have generally positive things to say about their boats. According to a discussion on the SailNet Community forum, one owner described the Hylas 42 as a "beautiful boat" with everything in great condition except for the teak decking in the cockpit, which they would either remove or replace.

Another owner on the Hylas Yacht Owners Association Forum described their 1985 Hylas 42 as an "incredible boat" that is "much admired" and often mistaken for a Swan or Baltic.

Some owners have discussed the unorthodox cockpit design of the Hylas 42, with one owner on the SailNet Community forum wondering how happy they would be with it long term. Another owner on the same forum suggested looking at the Hylas 44, which has a more conventional cockpit design.

However, another owner preferred the Hylas 42 over the 44 for several reasons, including its lower price, higher performance, and traditional straight settees in the salon area compared to the curved design in the 44.

Overall, it seems that owners of the Hylas 42 are very happy with their boats and appreciate their performance, design, and build quality.

How did the sailing press review the Hylas 42?

The Hylas 42 received positive reviews from the sailing press for its performance, quality, and comfort. For example, Jordan Yacht Brokerage described it as a "Frers Swan in disguise" , referring to its fast and elegant design by German Frers, who also designed many Swans. Practical Sailor included it in its list of "the best sailboats for the high seas" , praising its aft stateroom and centerline queen berth.

What is the history of the builders of the Hylas 42 and is the company still in business?

The builders of the Hylas 42 are Queen Long Marine, a family-owned company founded in 1978 in Taiwan. The company is still in business and continues to produce Hylas yachts, ranging from 46 to 70 feet, in collaboration with various designers. The company also builds other brands of sailboats, such as Moody and Taswell.

What keel options, if any, are available for the Hylas 42?

The Hylas 42 has two keel options: a deep fin keel with a draft of 7 feet and a shoal fin keel with a draft of 6 feet 2 inches. Both keels are made of lead and have a ballast ratio of about 50%.

What is the Hylas 42 like to sail?

The Hylas 42 is generally considered to be a good performer that is very stable and stiff.

What other sailboats have been created by the designer of the Hylas 42?

The designer of the Hylas 42 is German Frers, a renowned naval architect from Argentina. He has created many other sailboats, both for racing and cruising, such as the Swan 36, the Swan 46, the Swan 65, the Hallberg Rassy 53, the Nautor Club Swan 50, the Wally 80, and the Wallynano. He has also designed some of the Hylas models, such as the Hylas 44, the Hylas 49, and the Hylas 70.

We Never Underestimate Your Dreams

Hylas 42 review: frers swan in disguise.

Started in 1985, the 42 is one of the earliest Hylas models. Frers designed her fast, similar to his Swans. If you are looking for an aft cockpit Hylas, the 42 is yours. Amazingly for an aft cockpit design, she has an aft stateroom and centerline queen. The trade-off is low headroom aft and more superstructure on deck. She has a split cockpit and comes like all Hylases in shoal (6’2″) and deep (7’0″) versions. Her rudder is a spade not skeg unlike other Hylases. Queen Long produced her until 1990. At that point with the growing influence of Caribbean Yacht Charters, they decided to focus on larger designs for charter like the 44 and 47. Please see our Hylas Models Page for information about other Hylases.
