My school recently hosted its annual sports meet with more than 150 students participating in it. The event took place at University Sports Pavilion. Spectators witnessed a variety of activities. Our school has always valued the role of sports in the development of its students. My physical fitness sir, Mr. Suri and other teachers makes sure that all the students are active in sports or in any other extracurricular activities.

The chief guest for the event was Mr Manoj Sudhakar, retired physical fitness teacher of our school. Some of the other dignitaries who accompanied him to grace the occasion were Mr Fernando, Mr Angre and Mr Cooper. These three men were senior physical training teachers of other schools. Our Principle accompanied the chief guest and other dignitaries for a tree plantation activity in the school compound. Following the plantation, the guests were ushered to the school ground where all were presented with a bouquet. This marked the beginning of the opening ceremony.

Senior students presented a welcome song following with the annual sports report of the school. The Principal proudly announced that 15 students were sent for the national level sports meet held in Kolkata and they had won many medals for the school. He congratulated them through the ongoing event.

The chief guest then declared the sports meet open by unfurling the school flag. Students displayed a coordinated March Past in groups of four houses – Sincerity, Equality, Fraternity and Liberty. The fifth and sixth group comprised of Scouts and Guides. The March Past was led by sports captains and the Parade Commander, Kashinath Kadam. The sportsman’s oath was taken by Harshada Mhaske who represented the school at the national level in table tennis. This was followed by the torch relay performed by students who had represent the school at the national level in different fields of sports.

Various performances were put up by the students. Human pyramid presenting a display of archery was one of the most important attractions of the event. I had taken part in it. This presented the physical and mental strength of students.

At the end of the grand event, awards were distributed to the winners. Students who had represented the school at the national level were also felicitated through the ceremony. The chief guest then addressed the sports meet followed by a vote of thanks to all. The sports meet concluded with the National Anthem.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan both were disqualified from the 2023 women’s boxing world championships when they reportedly failed gender eligibility tests.

But this week, the International Olympic Committee confirmed the two boxers have been cleared to compete here at the Paris Games , as they both did at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The issues of so-called gender verification or sex testing have fueled discussion at the Olympics as the fighters prepare to enter the ring at North Paris Arena.

Khelif, a silver medalist at the 2022 world championships, is scheduled to fight Thursday against Angela Carini of Italy in the welterweight division at 146 pounds. Lin, a two-time world champion, is scheduled to fight Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan in the featherweight division at 126 pounds.

“Yeah, it’s really tricky," Australian boxer Tiana Echegaray told reporters Tuesday when asked about the situation. "I don’t know exactly what their circumstances are."

IOC spokesman Mark Adams indicated Tuesday no personal information about the boxers' medical histories would be disclosed. "They've been competing in boxing for a very long time," Adams told reporters. “They've achieved all the eligibility requirements in terms of sex and age. We're following the rules in place in Tokyo."

Who's in charge of boxing?

At the Summer Olympics, when it comes to gender eligibility, the IOC defers to the international federations that govern each of the 32 sports.

The IOC does provide a framework to the international federations . But it's “nonbinding."

In other words, it’s not up to the IOC. And the situation has grown especially complicated with boxing.

Last year the IOC banished the International Boxing Association (IBA), long plagued with scandal and controversy that jeopardized the future of Olympic boxing. In fact, the IOC denied IBA the right to run Olympic boxing during the Tokyo Games in 2021 and instead turned over control to an ad-hoc unit.

With that ad-hoc unit in charge, Kehlif and Lin both competed at the Tokyo Olympics. Neither won a medal.

But the IBA has maintained control of the world championships and gender eligibility rules. And after Lin won gold and Kehlif won bronze at the event in March 2023, officials announced the boxers had failed medical eligibility tests and stripped them of the medals.

IBA president Umar Kremlev said DNA tests “proved they had XY chromosomes and were thus excluded."

What's the eligibility criteria?

A passport could be key, based on comments from Adams, the IOC spokesman.

“I would just say that everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules," he said. “They are women in their passports and it is stated that is the case.”

Thursday Adams added that the issues with the previous tests for the boxers "was not a transgender issue, there's been some misreporting on that in press. ... These women have been competing as women for many years.

"What I would say just quickly on testosterone is, the testosterone (test) is not a perfect test. Many women can have testosterone, even what would be called 'male levels' and still be women and still compete as women. So this is not a panacea − this idea that suddenly you test, do one test for testosterone. Each sport needs to deal with this issue but I think we agreed, I hope we're agreed, we're not going to go back to the bad old days of 'sex testing'. That would be a bad idea."

In the past, other eligibility standards have hinged on science.

Caster Semenya, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field in 2012 and 2016, was forced to give up competing in the 800 meters because her testosterone levels were too high based on tests administered by World Athletics, the sport’s international federation previously known as the IAAF.

Semenya was assigned female at birth. She said she was told at age 18 that she has XY chromosomes and naturally had high levels of testosterone.

Khelif and Lin have not publicly addressed details of their medical histories regarding the tests.

The issue of eligibility surfaced as a source of controversy in the United States in 2022 when swimmer Lia Thomas became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA championship.

At the time, the NCAA required transgender female athletes to have undergone one year of testosterone suppression treatment to be eligible to compete on a women's team in any sport. The NCAA has been under pressure to update its guidelines after the NAIA banned all transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a decision in June by World Aquatics, the international federation for swimming, that prevented Thomas from competing in elite competitions through World Aquatics or USA Swimming.

Who are these two boxers?

Lin, 28, has been fighting as an amateur for more than a decade, according to BoxRec, a widely regarded boxing site.

She made her official amateur debut about three months shy of her 18th birthday, winning at the 2013 AIBA World Women’s Championships. She won gold medals at the world championships in 2019 and 2022.

At 5-foot-9, she often has enjoyed a height advantage while amassing a record of 40-14 with one knockout. The record does not reflect the four fights she won at the 2023 world championships before her disqualification, which resulted in the outcome of the fights being changed to “no contest.’’

She lost her last fight – a split-decision defeat against Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu in April at the 2024 USA Boxing International Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado.

Khelif, 25, made her amateur debut at the 2018 Balkan Women's Tournament. She won a silver medal at the 2022 world championships.

At 5-foot-10, she also has enjoyed a height advantage while amassing a record of 36-9 with four knockouts, according to BoxRec. That does not include the three fights she won at the 2023 world championships before her disqualification resulted in the fights being changed to “no contest.’’

In one of those fights, Khelif stopped her opponent by TKO.

A sports meet in which you took part.

Sports lovers here always look forward to the month of August or September because of the Interschool Sports meet. These occasions used to be very colorful and attractive. Just like the previous years, this year’s sports meet was enjoyable.

It was held in the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The stadium was cheerfully decorated for that purpose. The bitumen tracks were neatly marked with white paint. The sports officials were in their official badges and the whole day they were busy with preparations. At about 2 p.m. that day, there was the march past by athletes in their respective school colors and flags. The Chief Education Officer took the salute. With the singing of the National Anthem and the hoisting of the National Flag, he declared the meet open.

There were many interesting events. There were also separate events for boys and girls. The competitors were tense and serious. They were in excellent physical fitness. Some new records were set in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races. The hurdles and relays were some of the interesting track events. The girls’ events added some color and mirth to the spectators. Among the girls’ items, the tug-of-war was a never-ending source of merriment. Throughout the events, our school band was in attendance.

After the meet was over, the Chief Education Officer gave away the trophies and certificates to the winners. He complimented the athletes on their performance. The Secretary of the Inter-School Sports Council thanked the distinguished guests for their presence. With the singing of the National Anthem, the meet came to a grand close.

It was on that particular day, we shared the atmosphere of real joy and gladness. One of the most enjoyable days in our academic life drew to a close.

To say the head coach was not happy would be the understatement of the summer thus far.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott watched his team kick off the preseason schedule with a complete dud against the Chicago Bears at Highmark Stadium, and the eighth-year bench boss was displeased with the effort.

"A ton to work on. Our standard was not out there today. That's not how we play. There's a lot that we need to do to get ourselves ready to go here," said McDermott.

The Bills seemingly struggled up front, managing only 77 yards rushing on 26 attempts. As an offense, Buffalo averaged only 3.1 yards per play. Meanwhile, the Bears gained an average of 6.5 yards per play.

"We didn't control the line of scrimmage from the jump," said McDermott.

In addition to those issues, Buffalo was charged with 11 penalties in the 33-6 defeat.

"It started with, I felt like, beating ourselves quite a bit with pre-snap penalties - eight of the 11, maybe. Self-inflicted wounds are hard to overcome and then you have to play an opponent on the other side," said McDermott.

Even though his team emerged unscathed in the injury department, and his franchise quarterback looked fine, McDermott had trouble hiding his frustrations during the postgame press conference.

"If you had a blood pressure cuff on me during that game, it would have probably exploded," said McDermott.

Having instilled a "playoff caliber" mindset since the beginning of his tenure, McDermott explained the forces behind his disappointment on Saturday.

"The standard is the standard. It's the standard even in a preseason game, Preseason Week 1. That's probably one of the more irritating things of this. I don't care who it is, where we're playing, what time of day we play, or, in this case, Preseason Game No. 1, there is a standard and an expectation, when you put the colors on of the Buffalo Bills, to come out and play a lot better than we did and coach a lot better than we did," said McDermott.

Gina Rinehart has long been one of Australia's richest people thanks to her company Hancock Prospecting, which controls the country's largest iron ore mine.

The 70-year-old is in 103rd place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, worth an estimated $18.8 billion, although that figure has fallen by $8.4 billion this year. She's also the world's ninth-richest woman, according to Forbes.

Earlier this year Hancock and Chile's SQM took control of Australian lithium miner Azure Minerals. Lithium has become highly sought-after given its use in batteries for electric vehicles and other applications.

Rinehart has also been highly involved in funding Australian sport — and made headlines following family disputes.

Who is Gina Rinehart?

The 70-year-old magnate was born in Perth but spent her childhood in the Pilbara, the mineral-rich region in the north of Western Australia.

She briefly studied economics at the University of Sydney but dropped out to work for the mining company run by her father, Lang Hancock.

When he died in 1992, Rinehart took over Hancock Prospecting and acquired the Roy Hill mine soon after.

A booming market for iron ore in the 2000s allowed her to keep expanding the business, and she became a billionaire  in 2006.

Rinehart has been called a "godmother" to Australian sport after donating millions of dollars to swimming, rowing, volleyball, and artistic swimming teams in recent years. The funding has helped athletes cover living expenses and other costs while training.

However, Rinehart's sponsorship of sport has not been without controversy.

In 2022, Rinehart and Hancock Prospecting withdrew sponsorship of Australia's netball team  after an Indigenous player raised concerns about wearing a uniform with the company's logo due to comments made in the 1980s by Rinehart's father.

Rinehart and Hancock said in a statement at the time that it was "unnecessary for sports organizations to be used as a vehicle for social or political causes."

The lost funding was later replaced by government tourist body Visit Victoria.

Family drama

In 1983, Rinehart contested her mother's will, resulting in a feud with her father , per outlets including The Australian Women's Weekly.

After Hancock died, Rinehart waged a lengthy legal battle with her stepmother Rose Porteous over the circumstances that led to her father's death.

Rinehart has also been embroiled in court battles with her son John Hancock and daughter Bianca Rinehart over the rights to mining royalties worth billions of dollars.

She once said in a television TV interview that her children "just want unearned things to keep falling from the sky."

Earlier this year Rinehart made global headlines after seeking the removal of an unflattering portrait from the National Gallery of Australia.

Vincent Namatjira's painting, which depicts her with mottled pink skin and a double chin, has not been taken off display. The gallery said at the time it "welcomes the public having a dialog" about its displays.

Several Australian swimmers came to Rinehart's defense, calling the painting "offensive."
