| Click on the pictures below to read more reviews Want to take an adventure that allows you to unpack your bag once and not have to worry about anything else for the next few weeks, then the Albatross is the sailboat you want. Adriana and Radu will make you feel at home the moment you step foot on the boat. My family has NEVER repeated vacations to any destinations UNTIL we sailed with the Albatross. The first time we sailed was 6/2015. Our kids were 10 and 8 at the time. We brought another couple with us for a total of 6 people on board. The berths on the boat were very comfortable and meticulously clean. The galley has a small fridge/freezer and there is a stove and oven should you want to cook. Plenty of storage space for all your food and snacks. You set sail right away and the adventure begins. Everyday was a new island destination and we would stop for a mid morning swim in a secluded cove somewhere along the way. The kids and the adults loved jumping off the boat, snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding or just swimming around. All the gear is already on the boat, just pack your swimsuit and sunscreen. After eating lunch on the boat we would return pull up anchor and continue to our destination for the evening. Before you set anchor or pull up to the dock, Adriana gives you information about the island, the best beaches and points of interest, modes of transportation and even restaurant recommendations. All you have to do is decide on what best fits your groups interests. She makes it so easy you don't need to spend hours combing through books wondering what the best sites to see are. She can and will even call ahead to arrange a cab for you if you need it. Our 10 and 8 years old kids loved the trip so much, as did us parents, that we returned in 2019 and sailed again. Like I said we NEVER repeat trips so we insisted on seeing new islands and ports. Our first 2 week trip in 2015 took us to the Cyclade islands and the second 2 week trip in 2019 we went to the Dodecanese. Our kids were 14 and 12 this time and still loved everyday of the trip, until we had to leave. We told Adriana and Radu to start building another 2 week itinerary for us as we are considering and will probably be back for a third time. Truly cannot say enough great things about this experience. Adriana and Radu will make your trip into a personalized adventure tailor made for your family or friends. We were a group of five adults with several trips to our credit. We had an amazing week with Adriana and Radu. Not only have we sailed in a magical setting, we have also benefited from the experience of our guides. Adriana and Radu do everything to make our experience perfect. The boat is impeccably clean and very well maintained. At each island our hosts gave us advices and recommendations on the sites to see and their advices were always very good. In addition, the stops in the small bays little attended are magic. They are always on the lookout for questions and requests. I do more than recommend because we are going back next year! You must live this experience .Thank you Adriana and Radu! See you next year ! . What an awesome experience we shared with family and friends on our amazing three-week charter with Adriana and Radu on the Albatross! Our holiday far exceeded my expectations thanks to the special care and hospitality given to us by Adriana and Radu. They made this a very special holiday for me, my family, and closet friends. From my first email inquiry two years prior to boarding the Albatross, Adriana was very responsive and provided me with all the information I needed to ensure I chose the proper charter of the Greek Islands. Once aboard, Adriana and Radu surpassed all my expectations for ensuring we had a safe and fulfilling experience. Everything from selecting our daily routes, visiting beautiful harbors and towns, to recommendations for sights to see and places to eat was spot on! I can’t imagine a better time with a better crew to see the Greek Islands from a local perspective. I give Adriana and Radu 5+ Stars for a holiday of a lifetime- Thank you! A year ago we started researching for a spectacular ending to our 5 month European adventure. We decided that a casual cruise around some Greek islands would do the trick. After contacting Adriana and exchanging a few e-mails, we were left with no doubt as to which charter we were going to choose. Adriana is passionate about her sailing and sharing the wonders of Greece with all. From the moment we met Adriana at Skippers we felt immediately “at home”. We were introduced to Radu & the Albatross and got settled in quickly. These guys had thought of absolutely everything! The boat was fully equipped and the Charter Starter was a blessing and covered most, if not all what we needed. We were after a hassle-free, relaxing, yet exciting adventure and that is exactly what we got! We had no particular agenda but the brief was to take us to some beaches, swimming spots, fishing villages, historical sites. We all discussed and decided upon a rough itinerary (subject to weather conditions) on the 1st day before leaving, and although we had to change it during the trip, there was always an amazing alternative offered up by this great knowledgeable team. At each stop, Adriana would share her extensive knowledge of the area with us, complete with recommendations of what to do, where to eat, where to hire a car etc. Everything was just as she had said & we had a great time at each. Adriana & Radu are an incredible team that were completely in sync. Thank you so much for an epic high & unforgettable experience. All the best for your future & we hope that we are in it somewhere! If you're looking to sail in Greece I think you should check this out. From the initial email exchanges with Adriana to the last day of sail, everything was perfect. Our expectations were exceeded by the friendliness, kindness, and professionalism of Adriana and Radu. They know the islands like their back pocket and sailing is their passion. In every place we stopped they had recommendations for us where to go, what to see, where to eat, and they were spot on with everything. The sailing was nice and smooth, the boat is updated with all new navigation gadgets and it top condition. Besides the people and the boat, other things to consider: 1) from my research they are the only ones with a flexible schedule, all other charter boats are on a Sunday to Saturday pattern that may not fit your plans; 2) they do not go through a broker, Adriana answers all the emails and the info you get is specific and correct; 3) the prices are set (not + fuel, or + port and other fees, or any other creative gimmicks); 4) they are flexible (time, itinerary and all). Thank you Adriana and Radu. This was the 2nd trip for us on Albatross with Adrianna and Radu; first time for the other couple that came with us. It was as fantastic as the first time and our friends also completely enjoyed the 2 weeks of sailing. Their sailing and local knowledge are amazing. The boat is large, stable and comfortable. The itinerary was planned based on weather and our wishes, and Adriana briefed us on each spot when we arrived (worth taking notes or recording this!). They are always there and willing to do whatever is needed to make the trip amazing, and at same time they have the ability to stay out of the way (not always easy on a sailboat :) ). We already have others asking to join us the next time!! If you only visit Greece once, sail. Sail into the harbors of the old villages and truly experience their breathtaking beauty. Imagine what it was like hundreds or thousands of years ago... So much history and beauty awaits! If you only sail once, sail with Captain Radu and the lovely Adriana aboard the Albatross! We had the honor of meeting them and spending a week on board. It was the best vacation decision we've ever made. Radu is an amazing captain - I (a skeptical and nervous soul who has never sailed) felt immediately comfortable and confident in his ability. It was clear that we had the best skipper in all of Greece (ha!), seriously though, I am so grateful we chose to sail with him. Adriana is so much more informative than I had anticipated. Every time we docked she recommended things to do, told us a bit about the history, and gave us the general lay of the land. Most importantly, she told us where to eat. Eat exactly where Adriana tells you to eat and you will have experienced the best food that island has to offer. Not to mention the dreamy ambiance of the restaurants... As I mentioned I am a very skeptical and cautions person. Adriana made the whole booking experience smooth, she replied promptly and explained in detail how the process works. Had she not been such a professional, I wouldn't have booked at all - we would've likely stayed at a hotel in Santorini or something like that. I am forever grateful that we stumbled upon Blue Water Sailing and chartered a private yacht! (I would've never before even considered it was possible) We booked the first week of October. The weather was perfect and the water was about 75F, nice and warm. The ports were less busy and we got to experience towns like Hydra without being surrounded by tons of other tourists. Thank you so much Adriana and Radu! Read more of our reviews on our . |
David M, that sailed with us in October was writing: If you are after a yet adventure that is exactly what you will get: and visit as possible in a week - each day you will be visiting a new destination. Unlike a regular one week trip "get a ferry/find a hotel type "where you would probably end up spending all your time at one island. Rent a sailboat with captain and . Pretty efficient, right? And the best part - a skippered boat charter in the guarantee for while exploring a multitude of destinations. No need to figure out connection in between islands, accommodation, day trip around the island - step on board and the sailboat will provide all these.: relax and unwind each day for several hours on the water, then gear up and explore the various islands, then wind down at night with a drink on the boat! Skippered yacht charter greece.
Sailing holidays on a yacht rental is not just for sailors. It is for everyone seeking something more than the sea, the sun, and a sunbed. We provide professionally trained skippers for those who wish to rent a yacht and enjoy relaxing sailing holidays in Greece or those who wish to get involved and learn the ropes and the sails during a skippered yacht charter in Greece. After all, learning how to sail is easy. Depending on crew eagerness, our skipper will not only show how to navigate but will also provide firsthand knowledge of the Greek island destinations.
Our skippers are hospitable, friendly, discrete and knowledgeable about every destination and you will discuss together your preferences and plan your route. Choosing a skippered yacht charter, you also hire the skipper who will take care of the yacht for you and will ensure that you get the most out of your sailing holidays in Greece. When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

NEW CHARTER BASE IN SKRADIN CROATIA
Realtime availability & online booking for 2024
Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .
At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!
There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!
Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.
Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.
For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .
The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.
We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.
Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.
The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.
Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.
We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.
Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.
Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.
A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.
The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.
Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.
Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.
Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.
Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .
Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .
We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.
The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .
The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.
Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .
Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .
Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !
The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .
Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .
We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !
Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.
If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.
Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.
It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.
Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.
If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.
Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.
At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.
Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.
For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.
The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.
We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.
Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.
Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. Flotilla holidays & yacht charters from Poros, GreeceWhatever type of sailing holiday or yacht charter you opt for, Poros is the ideal starting point. A quiet quay with local eating establishments, traditional fishermen as your neighbours, the occasional ferry and easy access to your chosen sailing area and Athens airport. Spare yourself the nightmare of starting your sailing holiday from one of Athens’ noisy coastal ports such as Kalamaki or Lavrio. Enjoy the beginning and end of your sailing holiday by wandering the quayside restaurants & bars of Poros or shopping in the winding streets. You even save yourself the long beat back north to an Athens base against the Meltemi . In Poros, your sailing holiday starts the moment you step off the ferry. Rod Heikell’s West Aegean pilot guide describes Poros by saying; “The approach to the town is one of the most attractive in Greece...” and goes on, “...it has something else other than the appearance of a little Greek Venice, it has a sensuality, a calm, and what can only be described as a conviviality...” . But Rod Heikell is not alone, Lawrence Durrell , described it as “the happiest place I have ever known” and in her “Greek Odyssey” television series, Joanna Lumley reveals how her love affair with Greece started with a chance visit to Poros; “It was just enchanting...the best holiday ever” . What better place to start and end your sailing holiday! Whichever way you look at it, Poros is a great place to start and end your sailing holiday and well worth the extra hour of travel. Greek Sails are also the only yacht charter company in Poros, so if you are being offered a sailing holiday with a “Saronic fleet” and from a Poros base, it will be with us; there is no other yacht base here.

The increased airplane fares are partly to blame for the ongoing issues in the Greek infrastructure – not enough marinas to match the demand on other islands and continued over-tourism of key Cycladic charter locations. In addition, 2022 and 2023 have seen record increases in the numbers of new yachts – some 235 crewed boats were added to the yacht charter fleet, while most of the older yacht inventory got a refurbishment – in part also due to the EU funds promoting tourism. What Our Clients SayOur clients speak of unparalleled service, exquisite yachts, and a seamless booking process, highlighting the excellence of their yacht charter in Greece. Essential Info for Greece Yacht ChartersMost yachts are based in athens. The majority of our crewed charters in Greece depart from Athens to the Cyclades and the Saronic Gulf . Despite the Cyclades being the location we see most clients inquire about (because of the attractive islands of Mykonos and Santorini ), Greece has many more amazing destinations on offer. It is important to keep in mind that the most hyped islands are quite crowded in the peak months, and despite the limitations made on cruise ships entering islands like Santorini, visitor numbers haven’t significantly dropped. If you are unsure where to go, find some inspiration in our Ultimate Greece Yacht Charter Itinerary Guide . Here, you will find information about all the best charter destinations in Greece, location videos , and a complete list of our most popular itineraries . The Distances Between the Islands are Quite BigThe distances between the Greek islands are quite big, especially in the Cyclades – It is, for example, a whole 150 miles from Athens to Santorini . A crewed motor yacht charter from Athens to Cyclades cruising at 12 knots usually does day hops of 3-4 hours . The time increases for catamarans cruising at around 6 knots to at least 4-6 hours per day. For this reason, we advise, especially first-time charterers, to visit the Saronic Gulf – Hydra , Spetses , and Poros instead, reducing time spent at sea and increasing time spent exploring the islands. It is possible to cross from the Saronic Gulf to the Cyclades, which is usually done when Meltemi changes the plans of yachts from Athens. Captains Top 10 Destinations in the Cyclades for a Yacht Charter Greece Weather Conditions Can Significantly Impact Yacht Charter Itineraries in the CycladesThe strong Meltemi winds make the journey from Athens to Santorini subject to the elements, and some flexibility is needed as weather can significantly delay the journey. To avoid this, inquire about starting in Mykonos or Santorini and skipping the long cruise from Athens. Given that availability is contingent on the previous charter ending nearby or at your desired location, it is strongly recommended that you hold off on buying airline tickets until a boat is secured. Best Ionian Islands, Greece Yacht Charter Itinerary Athens to the Ionian Islands through the Corinth Canal – One of the World’s Narrowest CanalsThe third most popular crewed charter destination in Greece is the Ionian Sea . The Ionian Islands are only growing in popularity , and as more infrastructure is being built to accommodate more and larger yachts , the fleet is growing. What makes the Ionian Islands such a great cruising ground is its lesser wind , which makes sticking to an itinerary much easier, and its islands’ closer proximity, which allows for easy island hopping in smaller jumps . Although the fleet of permanent yachts, especially catamarans, is still limited in the Ionian Islands, it is possible to charter a yacht from Athens, passing through the Corinth Canal, one of the world’s narrowest canals . It is a very unique and spectacular experience to pass through here! How to Choose the Right Yacht for your Cyclades Greece Yacht Charter? There are so many places to go on a Greek sailing vacation, with the endless beautiful islands in the Aegean and Ionian Sea , that it can seem kind of overwhelming to plan a sailing itinerary. The question is whether you want to follow the hype and visit all the most talked-about destinations or whether you are seeking a yacht charter in Greece off the beaten track. There are loads of amazing secluded islands not overrun by tourists waiting for people to break the trend. They all have turquoise waters and ancient ruins; the difference is that you will have them more to yourself. Here are some of our favorite spots that have been repeatedly recommended by Captains and Crew who have sailed in Greece for years: The Old Pirate Island – MilosDid you know that during the Middle Ages and through the Ottoman era, piracy thrived in the Aegean Sea? And Milos was actually a central hub due to its strategic location on key maritime routes. Milos, often dubbed “ Pirate Island ,” was ideal for pirate activities thanks to its complex coastline filled with coves, caves, and tunnels that served as perfect hideouts. These natural harbors not only allowed pirates to evade naval authorities but also to ambush passing ships and swiftly conceal their plundered treasures. Milos was one of the most talked about destinations by Captains and Crew both at the Seminar as well as during onboard inspections at the show. They especially highlighted places like Sarakiniko Beach , known for its otherworldly, moon-like landscape and secluded bays. Onboard Catamaran Explorion , Captain Konstantinos Perdikaris tells us: “I especially like the south of Milos, where you will find the best water and connected caves. It is just amazing. And you can only go there by boat; you cannot access it by land, and there are not even any ferries going there. It is very special and secluded.” Captain Konstantinos also points out that the port of Milos is one of the best-protected ports in the Cyclades, making this the perfect hideout even in strong weather. The Breadbasket of Greece – NaxosIf you want a taste of real Greece, this is your island. Often referred to as the ‘Breadbasket’ of Greece , Naxos is one of the region’s most fertile islands and an agricultural gem. Olives, grapes, figs, and citrus fruit are just some of the produce growing on this island. As the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos is home to Mount Zeus , the tallest peak in the archipelago and the legendary birthplace of Zeus , king of the Greek gods. The Iconic PortaraAnother major attraction of Naxos is the Portara or the Great Door . This massive marble gateway is the remains of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo, which dates back to the 6th century BC . It stands on the islet of Palatia, which is connected to Naxos Town by a causeway. The Portara has become an iconic symbol of Naxos and is especially famous for its stunning views during sunset . The structure frames the setting sun perfectly during certain times of the year, making it a popular spot for both photographers and visitors looking to capture a quintessential Greek sunset. One of Greece’s most Protected Nature Reserve – PolyaigosPart of Natura 2000 as a nature reserve unbothered by humans. Polyaigos was by far the most mentioned favorite destination by Captains and Crew and was many times highlighted as one of the most amazing places to arrive on a yacht . Polyaigos, literally meaning ‘many goats,’ is the biggest uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea. The reason for its name, is the huge wild goat population which live on the island. But goats aside, Polyaigos is a deeply fascinating destination, primarily known for its dramatic natural landscape and rich biodiversity. It is part of the Natura 2000 network , which is a network of nature protection areas within the European Union. It is included notably because it supports a significant population of Mediterranean monk seals, which are among the most endangered marine mammals in the world . The Best Place to Dine by the Water – ParosParos , located right next to Naxos, is another destination that constantly came up when talking best destinations in the Cyclades with both Captains and Crew. It seems that the reason why Paros is so popular is because it is an island with everything . It has numerous stunning beaches like Kolymbithres and Golden Beach , to name a few, and charming Santorini-like villages like Naoussa and Parikia, which offer vibrant nightlife and historical sites. The island is a haven for watersports enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike, with opportunities for windsurfing, hiking, and exploring ancient marble quarries. Captain’s CommentAustralian Captain Kristy Steindl named Paros her favorite island in the Cyclades, with Naoussa , the small fishing village on the northern coast, being the number one place to dine by the water . Naoussa offers a plethora of seafood restaurants, offering a real authentic Greek cuisine, right on the water’s edge, providing a matchless real Greek culinary experience against the backdrop of the serene waters. The bay offers excellent protection for anchoring , ensuring a peaceful stay. Captain Kristy insists that Paros surpasses Santorini in terms of diversity and beauty with its abundance of stunning beaches. “In Santorini, you look out over the water from the top of a hill, literally hundreds of stairs from the water. In Paros, you look out from the white streets, and the water is so close you can smell it and dip your feet in. It’s a stunning island!” A Paradise Away from the Crowds – FolegandrosWhen onboard Jewel , a 51-foot Catamaran, we asked Captain George Iliopoulos about his favorite destinations in the Cyclades. He did not hesitate a moment before he said Folegandros . His description of the island showed true enthusiasm for this place, which he has returned to so many times, both with charters and privately. Unlike some of its more popular neighbors, it’s peaceful and untouched by mass tourism . Chora, the main town, sits up h igh on a cliff, giving you some of the best views of the Aegean Sea you’ll ever see . It’s got this old-world charm with its narrow streets and classic Greek architecture that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Captain George also highlighted the island’s fantastic beaches , specifically mentioning Agali and Ambeli as favorites. One of their favorite charter activities for guests is a traditional Greek fish barbecue on the beach , enjoyed as the sun sets. Hostess and Chef Melina Chroni added that after a delicious meal of fresh seafood, cocktails around the fire always make for a memorable evening. Despite its otherworldly beauty, Milos, Greece ––located more than 94 miles (152 kilometers) northwest of Santorini––was dismissed by travelers as an ideal island vacation destination. For a long time, Greeks avoided visiting because of the island’s reputation as “too industrial”. Since the Neolithic era, Milos’ main industry was mining. Santorini and Milos share similar landscapes and geology. The islands' similarities in minerals and precious metals is due to a volcanic eruption that caused the submersion of the African continental plate beneath the Eurasian continental plate more than three million years ago. Today, Santorini is expensive, overdeveloped, and crowded because of its notoriety as a port for cruise ships and attraction as a Instagram-worthy destination . For those reasons, the lesser-known Milos should be on the radar of travelers in search of awe-inspiring rock formations, archeological sites, and beaches. An abundance of minerals on Milos is one of the reasons why visitors will notice a palette of colors splashed across the cliffs of this island––more varied than the cliffs of Santorini. Photographer, tour guide, and web designer Andreas Belivanakis explains that Santorini is known for its burnt orange cliffs, Red Beach and black lava beaches, but Milos offers more. “In Milos, though, there’s all colors of the rainbow. All along the rocky shoreline, you’ll see all different colors. Green is bentonite, red is iron oxide, blue is amethyst.” And there’s no better place to marvel at the many hues of the island than on its more than 70 beaches or from the deck of a boat, especially on the west coast where Milos is uninhabited and not accessible by road. ( What are the 31 best Greek islands to visit in 2024? ) Archeological sites reveal the island's rich historyHowever, it’s not just the landscape that attracts visitors to Milos now; it’s also the Greek island’s rich history. “I believe that with the exception of Delos and Crete, Milos has more history per square mile than any other island in Greece,” says Andreas, a Milos native who recommends four must-see sites when visiting the island. Ancient Theater The relatively well-preserved Ancient Theater is a must-see sight for visitors. It overlooks the Aegean Sea and the harbor of Klima, a small fishing village. Originally built during the Hellenistic period with Roman constructed additions, the Milos theater had four to five thousand seats, but only 700 remain, according to Andreas. Locals deconstructed the marble seats to build their homes and courtyards. After a five-year restoration project that ended in 2015, the theater is now open to the public for hosted cultural events. Catacombs of Milos History buffs visiting Milos should visit its historic catacombs that date back to the first century A.D. Situated west of Trypiti, these catacombs are older than Rome’s catacombs and substantially smaller at 600 feet (183 meters) in length. However, guides in Milos say that outside of Rome, these catacombs represent one of the best-preserved and extensive catacomb sites in the world. It’s also touted as the most important early Christian monument of worship and burial site in Greece. Venus of Milos Amongst a stand of olive trees and stone ruins, a plaque marks the area where a farmer discovered the Venus de Milo sculpture in 1820. Greeks refer to it as “The Aphrodite of Melos.” The original resides in The Louvre in Paris, but a replica was installed at the discovery site in 2022. A better quality replica can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Milos . Ancient ruins of Phylakopi Although it's temporarily closed, the ruins of Phylakopi is another place Andreas recommends people see when visiting Milos. While much of the site has suffered from substantial erosion, history enthusiasts can visit one of the most important and biggest settlements of the Cycladic culture ––remnants including a cyclopean wall, the Mycenean sanctuary, and a megaron, an architectural form consisting of an open porch, vestibule, and a large hall with a central hearth and a throne. The stone, clay, and bronze figurines, in addition to the ceramics excavated from the site, are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Milos . Visit otherworldly beaches and sea cavesFrom the most photographed beach to one of the most impressive spots to visit by boat, here are a few recommendations specifically for travelers in search of the best places for sun, sand, and sea in Milos. Sarakiniko Beach “For most of its history, [Sarakiniko] was underwater,” says Andreas. “Then there was a volcanic explosion, the last known eruption in Milos, 90,000 to 100,000 years ago. That’s when Sarakiniko rose from the water.” Not so much a beach as a rare geological phenomenon, the moonscape of Sarakiniko was named after the Saracen pirates who used it as a hideout. Beachgoers can take in the ghostly white volcanic cliffs and sea caves, sculpted by wind and water, while catching sunrays, taking a dip, or canon balling into the water from the tops of sea caves. Kleftiko Located on the southwest coast of Milos, the cove at Kleftiko can be reached only by boat. Luckily, several outfitters offer day tours to some of the island’s sea caves, rock formations, and hard-to-access swimming locations. With its sea caves and giant rocks rising out of the sea, Klefitko provides a postcard-perfect setting for visitors to cavort in the lapis-lazuli waters, explore its sea caves, and enjoy lunch on a boat. Andreas suggests that the south coast of Milos is home to the best beaches, such as the mile-long Paliochori Beach with its color-sprayed cliffs and the additional bonus of the restaurant Sirocco . “They’ll cook your food in a sandpit,” Andreas says. “Because of the volcanic heat, it’s very hot (215°F / 102°C). It’s an experience not to be missed.” Other recommended beaches include Gerakas, a beach only accessible by boat; Fy ripl aka, an accessible beach with fairly shallow waters; and Ammoudaraki , a small, secluded stretch of sand surrounded by greenery, and nearby cave. ( Go diving! See our list of the best diving locations in Greece. ) Five recommended villages to exploreOf the island’s 14 towns and villages, these five places are recommended for first-time visitors along with a few restaurants to try the local culinary fare. Adamas The port town of Adamas, also known as Adamantas, is the largest town on the island. Cretan refugees settled here, establishing it as an official town in 1835. Its charms are hidden in the narrow stone-paved alleyways behind the main strip. Visitors will enjoy its charming shops, white staircases, and pretty churches. Don’t miss O! Hamos , the family-run taverna that serves hyper-local cuisine at Papikinou Beach. Plaka Like Santorini’s capital Fira, Plaka, the capital of Milos, is perched atop a high cliff. It features whitewashed churches, quaint boutiques, snoozing cats, and a labyrinth of alleys lined with homes adorned with brightly painted shutters and bougainvillea-draped balconies. Visitors should head to the remains of the 13th-century Venetian Castle for panoramic views of the town and the Bay of Milos, especially at sunset. Klima Klima is the largest of the island’s colorful boathouse (or syrmata ) settlements. Exclusive to Milos, a syrmata is a small, traditional two-level boathouse home inhabited by local fishermen. Today, many of the syrmata have been flipped to be used as vacation homes. Mandrakia In Mandrakia, the fishermen’s houses are caves carved into the rock by the sea. According to Andreas, this small fishing village has some of the best seafood restaurants, such as Medusa , which has outdoor seating for guests to dine while enjoying the view of the Aegean Sea. Pollonia This picturesque fishing village must be entered via an inlet. It’s also known for its cave-aged Melian wine produced by vintner Kostas Mallis , who ferments wines in clay amphoras. So, if you’re planning a trip to Greece and you’re looking for a less-crowded option to Santorini, you may want to consider exploring Milos and its history, quaint villages, picturesque beaches, and the local cuisine. Arguably Greece’s most iconic island group, the Cyclades got their name because, if you squint, the 30-odd main islands form a circle, or kyklos , around the sacred island of Delos, birthplace of the twin gods Artemis and Apollo. In the southwestern curve of that circle sit Milos, Sifnos and Serifos, three Aegean islands that share a stark, wild beauty owing in part to the minerals that made them mining hubs well into the last century. (Mining continues on Milos, where it vies with tourism as one of the island’s main industries.) All three also offer a number of excellent beaches, hiking paths, seafront tavernas and whitewashed hilltop villages dating to medieval times. But each island has its own flavor. Sifnos tends to attract food-focused visitors, who are drawn by the island’s culinary traditions and history. The birthplace of Nikos Tselementes, who wrote the first commercial Greek cookbooks in the early 20th century, Sifnos is home to Omega 3 , the renowned seafood-focused restaurant founded by the chef Giorgos Samoilis, who has a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Serifos is beloved by hikers and bikers, while Milos, the largest of the three (with 5,000 year-round inhabitants), draws those who crave a livelier scene and are eager to pose on the moonscape of Sarakiniko beach. Only Milos has an airport (the flight from Athens is just 40 minutes), but each island is accessible from Athens, and from the others, by high-speed Seajet and other ferries. (The Seajet trip from Milos to Serifos takes a little over an hour; to Sifnos from Milos it’s a little over half an hour; and between Sifnos and Serifos about 20 minutes.) Whichever you visit, it’s vital that you hop on a boat to take in the islands’ dramatic coastlines, and swim off the uninhabited islet of Polyaigos. “There are a lot of interesting rocks, so it’s like sailing through a sculptural park,” says Natassa Kalogeropoulou, a ceramist living and working on Serifos. “And you’ll swim in the best waters you’ve seen in your life.” Here, Kalogeropoulou and three other locals and longtime visitors share their favorite spots on the three islands. The InsidersGiorgos Atsonios, born and raised on Sifnos, moved back to his home island after studying and working in Athens. He runs Café Mosaico , a meze restaurant in the hillside village of Artemonas. Natassa Kalogeropoulou, a ceramist, runs Kerameio , a ceramics studio, gallery and workshop on the island of Serifos. Lito Karakostanoglou, the Athens-based jewelry designer behind Lito Fine Jewelry , has been visiting the southwestern Cyclades for 15 years. Alexandra Kehayoglou, the Greek-Argentine textile artist , first came to Milos in 2015. She and her husband, the artist José Huidobro, will be showing “Waiting for Venus,” a new series of works, at Tria Pigadia beach on Milos in September. Illustrations by Richard Pedaline “ The villas at Skinopi Lodge , near the site of an ancient obsidian mine overlooking the bay of Milos, are amazing. The owner, Nausika Georgiadou, has a deep love for the nature of Milos. And we saw our first dolphin on the island off the coast here, so it’s a special place for us.” (Rooms from about $500 a night) “There’s a new hotel called Volcano Luxury Suites , next to Palaiochori beach on Milos. The same family has a restaurant called Sirocco where they cook the food in the volcanic sand. All the generations work there. You can see the papou , the grandpa, who is the owner, going into the ocean with a little boat.” (Rooms from about $220 a night) — Alexandra Kehayoglou “ Rizes hotel has a fantastic view of Chora, Serifos’s capital, where the houses were built [on a hill] to form a big wall to protect the people from the pirates who used to ransack the islands.” (Rooms from about $160 a night) “The minimalist, modern architecture of the Homa villas, above Vagia, one of the nicest beaches on Serifos, is also very impressive.” (Rooms from about $670 a night) And on that same beach is the Coco-Mat hotel, occupying the site of an old mining camp, which tries to be very eco-friendly and close to nature.” (Rooms from about $360 a night) — Natassa Kalogeropoulou “Verina is a small company that owns three hotels on Sifnos; all of them are good. One of them, Verina Astra , is on a hill on the way to Poulati, which is one of the best places to swim, below the Panagia Poulati monastery. It’s only rocks — there’s nothing else there. You have to go when the sea is calm; if the wind is strong from the north it can be dangerous. But the spot is really nice.” ( Rooms from about $220 a night) — Giorgos Atsonios Eat and Drink“On Milos, Medusa is above the bay in Mandrakia, and you can see the beginning of Sarakiniko beach and all these white rocks. They have a small menu but everything is amazing. Some of the food is cooked by the owner’s mother. I especially like the marinated anchovies. “ Embourios is a local restaurant a half-hour drive from Milos’s main port, Adamas, so they give you what they have. Sometimes it’s goat, produce from their own vegetable garden or, if they go fishing, some barbounia, small red mullet. Whatever they have, they put on the menu. And you can see the whole [northern] coast of Milos.” — A.K. “On the northern side of Serifos is Sykamia beach, with To Akrogiali tou Vitou, also known as Anna’s Taverna. It’s right on the shore, where two hiking paths meet, and most of the vegetables are grown in the garden beside it. There are some great, hidden swimming spots nearby at Skala beach.” — Lito Karakostanoglou “Serifos has a nice Thai restaurant, Blue Bamboo , in a dry riverbed in Livadi. You can hear the bamboo rustling in the breeze, and the barman makes great cocktails. In Serifos’s Chora, I like Marathoriza . The woman who cooks is from Serifos and knows the traditional cuisine — fennel pie served with honey; fried potatoes; lamb with sage; and chickpeas in a clay pot, which is one of the most famous local dishes. “Another nice place in Chora, right on the square, is Seriani Restobar ; I get the risotto with shrimp and mussels or the rooster with noodles. And there’s a great cocktail bar, Thidira Tap Bar . My favorite drink there is the London Mule: gin, lime and ginger beer.” — N.K. “On Seralia bay, under Kastro village on Sifnos, Cantina is a must for local cuisine paired with wines from the wider Balkans. They have a five-year-long insistence on a minimal waste culture. I also love its sister restaurant, Pelicanos , on Faros beach, for all-day cocktails, oysters, lunch and dinner. [The chef Giorgos Samoilis, formerly of Omega 3, now oversees the kitchen at both Cantina and Pelicanos.] “ Manolis Taverna on Sifnos’s Vathi Beach serves perfectly cooked local dishes on the beachfront with a variety of wines carefully selected by its sommelier. On Sundays I never miss the traditional chickpea soup (revithada) baked overnight in a wood-fired oven.” — L.K. “ Iliovasilema, or Sunset, is a family-owned restaurant in Troulaki, Sifnos, that uses produce from its own farm. My favorite dish is almyro kataifi, a savory shredded-wheat pastry with cheese and pastourma, a cured meat. “ Kitrino Podilato , or Yellow Bicycle, is a local place for pastry in Artemonas. It has a charming terrace to spend the afternoon on — the Greek afternoon, after 6 p.m. My favorite dessert is the crème brûlée, but there’s also a nice profiterole.” — G.A. “In Chora on Serifos, I like Fleva . They have leather bags [by the designer Eleanna Katsira] that are stylish and very well made. In the main port of Livadi on Serifos there’s a lovely jewelry shop, Fe , named for the chemical symbol for iron. In the port, the shopping area isn’t that big but it’s very interesting because all the shop owners spend the winter trying to find special things, with good fabrics or made by Greek artists.” — N.K. “You can find a shop with pottery in almost any village on Sifnos. Apostolidis Ceramics , on the way from the port [Kamares] to Apollonia, has also started giving tours and will let you try to throw pots yourself.” — G.A. “In the main port of Adamas, I always buy evil-eye amulets and items made out of obsidian, a magical black stone that keeps dark energies away; Milos was mined for obsidian in ancient times.” — A.K. “ Lembesis Ceramics on Sifnos creates works of art. They still reproduce folkloric designs by the late grandmother of the family on plates, cups and salad bowls that you’ll definitely want to take home.” — L.K. “There’s a winery on Serifos, Chrysoloras , that has excellent wines. Visit during sunset. The owner serves the wine they produce with snacks from the island — sometimes local cheeses, olives, or tomatoes.” — N.K . “Theodorou in Artemonas, on Sifnos, has probably been baking for a hundred years. They make pasteli, a honey cookie with sesame you can dip in your coffee, and amygdalota, the sweet almond cookies the island is known for. I use some handmade pieces from Sifnos Stoneware in my kitchen at the cafe; I like the designs and they’re very, very durable. They’re made of stoneware, which is fired at a higher temperature than other ceramics, so it’s very strong” — G.A. “The Ancient Theater of Milos , overlooking the sea, is a powerful place to stand and imagine the past. It’s very close to where they found the Venus de Milo, Aphrodite. From there, you can hike down to Klima, with all the white boathouses with their colorful doors, carved out of the rocks. Astakas Cafe , on the shore, i s also very nice.” — A.K. “Firiplaka is one of Milos’s most beautiful beaches. But there are so many. Milos is actually divided into two sides. The east side is where everything happens, and the west side is protected. No one is allowed to develop it; there’s quite a lot of mining but no hotels. The roads are dirt roads, but you can go with a Jeep or four-wheel-drive vehicle and reach stunning Triades beach, all the way to the west. “Also take a boat trip. On Milos, you can go to Kleftiko and see the sea caves that were pirates’ hiding places or sail all the way to the uninhabited island of Polyaigos. Or you can take the little ferry to the island of Kimolos.” — A.K. “There are a lot of hiking paths on Serifos. The easiest hike is to start in Chora and follow the steps that lead to Livadi. But I recommend the path from the village of Kallitsos toward Chora because the view is fantastic. Do it early in the morning to see the sunrise. An easy but inspiring walk starts in the coastal village of Megalo Livadi and leads to the beach. But when you’re hiking, never enter any hole in the mountain: These are from the old mines, and they’re dangerous, there are falling rocks. You can stand outside, but don’t enter the mines.” — N.K. “Every summer I take an [eight-hour day] cruise to Polyaigos between Sifnos and Milos, where the color of the water is unbelievable. Aegeas , an old fishing boat turned into a cruise ship, takes you there, and while you’re swimming, the crew prepares food for you. “My favorite places to swim on Sifnos are Poulati and Fassolou or Glyfo in the village of Faros. But if you want to spend more time, Cheronissos, on the north part of the island, is a small fishing village with two restaurants on the beach, Ammoudia and Cheronissos. Both have good seafood and typical Greek fare. If you’re with your family, the kids can play on the little beach while you’re at the restaurant. “I bike a lot. There are bike paths on the island, and there’s a company called Sifnos Bike Experience that rents electric bikes and also does guided tours.” — G.A. “Don’t miss the hiking trail from Apollonia to Panagia Toso Nero, with a panoramic view and a variety of cultural sites. It also passes small creeks, olive groves and terraced slopes, old fields and abandoned huts. And try to take part in a traditional fete, called a panigiri here. The one for Prophet Elias takes place in July. It begins with an evening mass and is followed by a seated dinner, music and dancing. Dinner is prepared by locals.” — L.K. Practical Matters“The best time to come to Milos is spring, when the fields blossom with flowers and it’s magical. That’s my favorite time to go and capture it because I know it fades quickly and then the heat comes.” [Kehayoglou’s textile “ Meadow ,” now on exhibit in Sweden, is inspired by spring in Milos.] — A.K . “Obviously, I’d suggest avoiding August. There are too many people and traffic jams. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to come — less crowded than summer and less windy.” — N.K. “Every year, 40 days after Easter, Sifnos has the festival of the name day of Panagia Chrysopigi, Our Lady of the Golden Spring, the protector of the island. A boat comes from Athens, stops at the port of Kamares to pick up the icon that belongs to the monastery of Chrysopigi and delivers it to the church there, which is the symbol of the island. It’s a big ceremony for the island.” — G.A. These interviews have been edited and condensed. Two Turks Detained Pending Trial Over Deadly Migrant Boat Chase off Greek Island ATHENS (Reuters) - Two Turkish nationals were detained pending trial for people trafficking on Wednesday after a deadly boat chase with the Greek coastguard off the island of Symi on Aug. 23. A 39-year-old man, thought to be from Kuwait, was found dead in a speedboat carrying migrants off the east Aegean island. The Greek coastguard said warning shots were fired at the vessel when it ignored calls to stop and engaged in dangerous manoeuvres. The two defendants, 16 and 24 years, have been charged with people smuggling. They have both denied wrongdoing, legal sources said. They appeared before a judge on the island of Rhodes on Wednesday who ordered their detention pending trial. The date of the trial depends on when the investigating magistrate wraps up a preliminary probe into the case. A separate courts-martial process is under way against the coast guard officer who shot at the speedboat, charged with involuntary manslaughter and using a firearm for no reason. In preliminary testimony, the officer said that he acted on his own initiative after the person steering the speedboat attempted to ram the coastguard vessel, placing coastguard crews' lives at risk. Greece has been a favoured gateway to the European Union for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia since 2015, when nearly one million people reached its shores, in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Thousands of others have died at sea. Numbers have dropped significantly since then and some 18,000 have reached Greece by sea so far this year. All eight migrants were rescued in both cases, which occurred over the weekend. The incidents come as smugglers using speedboats, instead of the flimsy inflatable dinghies with small engines they favored for years, adopt increasingly aggressive tactics to dodge Greek marine patrols. Last week, coast guards opened fire , killing one migrant, after a speedboat allegedly rammed their vessel in the eastern Aegean Sea during a chase. The Greek coast guard said Tuesday that in one case over the weekend a Palestinian and an Afghan man piloting a speedboat also tried to ram a pursuing patrol boat off the island of Kos. It said they then allegedly forced five passengers to jump into the sea, escaping towards the island as the coast guards stopped to rescue the migrants. Thirty migrants from the boat were later located on land, while the two suspected smugglers were arrested. In a second incident off the island of Symi, three migrants were forced off the smuggling boat in mid-chase, the Greek coast guard said. That allowed the smugglers to return to Turkish waters with their remaining passengers, who were picked up by the Turkish coast guard. The three migrants rescued in Greek waters said they had paid $4.500 each to be ferried across, according to a Greek coast guard statement. Smuggling gangs have adapted in recent months to deal with Greece's tight policing of eastern Aegean waters. Apart from aggressive use of high-powered speedboats, they have also followed new routes through the central Aegean, while there has been an increase in migrants making the much longer journey from Libya to the southern Greek island of Crete. Separately Tuesday, the Greek coast guard said that a total of 42 people in two speedboats crossed from Turkey to the eastern island of Leros in the past 24 hours Two suspected smugglers were arrested among the migrants on land, while a third was taken into custody at sea following a chase, a coast guard statement said. According to data from the United Nations refugee agency, about 31,500 migrants have arrived illegally in Greece so far this year.
