Best boat fenders: 7 of the best options for protecting your topsides

  • Phil Sampson
  • November 16, 2022

We take a look at 7 of the best boat fenders on the market right now, which are available in various shapes and sizes

best-boat-fenders-buyers-guide

Doubling up your fenders can create a useful step

If ever there was an unsung hero in the world of boating, it surely has to be the humble fender. Ubiquitous and largely maintenance-free, fenders dangle fearlessly in the face of adversity, protecting the valuable and vulnerable hulls of their owners from miscalculations at the helm and the wayward actions of other boaters alike.

It follows, therefore, that fenders should not be regarded simply as ‘fit and forget’ items, but as integral safety components with the potential to protect against substantial damage-repair costs.

Consequently, it’s well worth reviewing the complement of fenders attached to your boat and asking questions such as: are they the right type and size? Do I have enough of them? Are they in a serviceable condition?

What to look for in a good set of boat fenders

In terms of type, side-hull fenders are most commonly cylindrical, ball or flat/cushion, while bows and transoms can be protected with shaped fenders made specifically for purpose. A commonly used sizing guide for cylindrical fenders advises between 25-50 millimetres diameter for every 1-1.5 metres of boat length.

The length of the fender itself will depend on the freeboard of the boat to which it is attached. A minimum of three fenders per side is recommended, with at least one placed every 3 metres along the length of the boat. A ball fender at the bow not only guards the sharp end from collisions but also comes in handy as a rover or when springing off pontoons .

Always ensure your fenders are pumped up to the correct pressure – generally between 0.15 and 0.2 bar – and show them some love by cleaning them regularly. That way, they will give you many years of service in return.

And lastly, if you’re too posh to pull, why not try an automatic fender system ?

Here’s our pick of the best boat fenders on the market today.

Best boat fenders available right now

best-boat-fenders-poloyform-g-series

Polyform G series boat fenders

Available in six sizes to accommodate boats from sub-10 feet to up to 40 feet in length, the Polyform G Series is a high quality, good looking product boasting an even wall thickness for strength and durability.

Moulded-in ribs add to the strength while also providing protection against abrasion. Manufactured from vinyl and available in no less than 16 colours, Polyform fenders have a unique valve designed to give many years of trouble-free service.

All G Series fenders have an eye at either end so they can be vertically or horizontally mounted.

best-boat-fenders-majoni

Majoni white/blue boat fenders, set of four

Our pick here is a bundle of four size 2 (15 x 56 cm) Majoni fenders. Described as being ideal for boats from 19-22 feet in length and supplied ready inflated, the deal listed below includes a complimentary set of fender ropes.

That means each fender and its rope comes in at less than £15 each, which we reckon represents good value by any measure.

The styling – a white body tipped with blue at either end – is a long-time boater’s favourite which adds a splash of colour to a fender set which might otherwise look a touch drab, especially after a season or two’s use.

Price: £57.49

best-boat-fenders-ocean-round

Ocean Series R round fender

Ocean’s Series R round fenders are heavy duty units, and as such are much favoured by commercial fishermen as well as recreational boaters. Available in a selection of eight sizes from R0 (22 x 30 cm) to R7 (100 x 138 cm), Ocean’s Series R caters for boats from 3 to 24 metres.

All Series R fenders have a rib-reinforced eye to ensure ropes are held securely and safely over the long term. The buoy’s one-piece construction, consistent wall thickness and UV resistance all add strength and durability to this well designed product.

And if white with a blue tip doesn’t take your fancy, R Series buoys are also available in red tipped with dark blue.

best-boat-fenders-anchor-marine

Anchor Marine standard fenders

Anchor Marine has been manufacturing fenders in the UK for more than half a century. Moulded in UV-resistant PVC and available in 12 colours in addition to base white, the company’s standard boat fenders are popular among commercial and leisure users.

Ruggedly constructed with a high resistance to bursting – due to what Anchor Marine describes as its ‘class leading wall thickness’ – each fender has an eye at either end to allow horizontal or vertical attachment to the boat.

Fitted with valves for easy inflation and deflation, all Anchor Marine standard fenders have hard thimble eyes to reinforce rope securing points.

Price: £7.95 – £49.95

best-boat-fenders-anchor-transom-corner-fender

Anchor Marine transom fender

Our second featured product from Anchor Marine are these transom fenders, which have been designed to give protection to any boat with a vulnerable transom or bathing platform. And if you’d rather not fit them to your boat, they can just as easily be mounted to the exposed corners of a marina berth or finger pontoon instead.

Supplied with two mounting strips and offered in four colours – white, royal blue, black and navy – these fenders measure 13 x 10 x 10 cm and weigh in at just under a kilogramme. Built to the same high standards as all other Anchor Marine products, these transom fenders could well pay for themselves in single bump!

Price: £27.99

Flat/cushion fenders

The obvious advantage of flat or cushion fenders is that they will not puncture or deflate, meaning 24/7 protection is provided regardless of whether the owner is on hand to keep a watch on them.

Our pick here is Force 4 Chandlery ‘s own-brand flat/cushion fender. Available in two sizes – 41 x 21 x 5 cm and 55 x 29 x 7 cm – these blue and white semi-rigid fenders are manufactured from tough PU closed-cell foam which will not absorb water.

Being flat, they are also easy to stow and, as Force 4 helpfully points out, double up as cockpit cushions or kneeling pads when not in use protecting the boat.

Price: From £27.95

best-boat-fenders-talamex-bow

Talamex bow fender

Talamex Marine Products is the house brand of the Yachting Division of Netherlands-based distributor, Lankhorst Taselaar/Hohorst. As such, a wide range of quality marine equipment and fittings are marketed under the Talamex name, including the bow fender we have selected here.

The attraction of this three-eye horseshoe-shaped unit is that it is billed as a one-size product and thus should be suitable for a variety of boats and hull types. Anyone who has ever bashed their bow into a pontoon will certainly appreciate the benefits a bow fender can offer!

Boat Fenders and Boat Bumpers

Boat fenders, which are also known as boat bumpers, are designed to protect your vessel from damage that could be caused when docked or moored. Bumping against your dock or mooring will likely cause unsightly scrapes to the side of your boat. Hulls can also receive damage serious enough to scuttle your boat while it is docked. Avoid expensive damage and as well as the potential loss of your craft with quality boat bumpers from Wholesale Marine.

We stock an expansive selection of boat fenders, boat bumpers, and their accessories to protect your boat from hard knocks. Our selection includes cylindrical fenders , round fenders , specialty fenders , PWC fenders , and pontoon fenders . Whether you have a bass boat or cruiser, it’s important to choose the right fender style and size to ensure your vessel is well-protected.

Choosing the Right Boat Fenders/Boat Bumpers

Traditional inflatable boat fenders such as Taylor Made’s Super Gard Fender are a very popular option among boaters. These durable fenders are available in multiple colors and sizes, making them suitable for most crafts. Flat and contour fenders from Hull Hugr are a great option for bass boats and runabouts. Unlike traditional boat fenders, they provide more protection for gunwales. Additionally, these fenders can be installed as a dock bumper. If you need a specialized fender, such as the Taylor Made Bass Boat Fender or Taylor Made Pontoon Boat Fender , we have you covered. These unique fenders offer protection to areas where traditional boat fenders won’t work.

For new and veteran boaters alike, we offer an extensive selection of fender accessories including fender line, fender covers, fender locks, and more. Monday through Friday, our customer service team is available to assist with finding products, placing orders, and more. If you need assistance in selecting the right boat bumpers or any other marine products, give us a call at 1-877-388-2628. Don’t forget to ask about our Captain’s Club Rewards Program to start earning points towards future purchases.

Fenders for Small Boats

Small boat fenders are essential accessories designed to protect the hulls of smaller vessels, such as dinghies, kayaks, and personal watercraft, from damage during docking or when moored close to other boats. Compact and lightweight, these fenders can be easily attached to a boat's sides or bow using ropes or straps, offering cushioning against impacts.

What is the optimal size for a boat fender for small boats?

The optimal size for boat fenders for small boats typically depends on the specific situation and boat type. For small boats, flat fenders or boat bumpers about 2 feet long are generally recommended, as they provide sufficient protection without taking up too much space. When placing fenders, ensure they cover the contact surface and create a buffer to protect the boat's rub rail and hull, especially when tying up to a dock or rafting with other boats.

How do fenders work to protect a small boat from damage?

Fenders work to protect a small boat from damage by acting as a cushion between the boat and any large, hard surfaces it may come into contact with, such as docks, piers, or other vessels. These fenders, available in a variety of sizes and configurations, help absorb the impact and prevent scratches or dents. For pontoons and other small boats, foam-filled or inflatable fenders provide the necessary protection, ensuring the boat remains undamaged even in close quarters or crowded marinas.

How can I determine the size of fender I need for my boat?

To determine the size of fender you need for your boat, consider the length and weight of your boat. For every 4 to 5 feet of boat length, you need one fender, and it’s advisable to choose fenders that are at least 2 inches in diameter for each 5 feet of boat length. If your boat is bigger or you anticipate docking in rough conditions, opt for larger or foam-filled fenders for better protection. You can find a variety of fenders in stores, including new big orange ones, which are easy to spot and offer excellent protection.

small yacht fenders

We gave our Boating Team one job: Review the best boat fenders. Some fenders they use, some we bought or otherwise interviewed boaters that have them. Our review team always considers durability, price, quality, and value in their reviews.

small yacht fenders

Boat fenders are the best and easiest way to protect your boat. They will save you money and give your neighbors peace of mind.

Also known as boat bumpers, fenders work as cushions. They absorb the impact of bumps against docks, pilings, and other vessels, thus avoiding damages to your watercraft and making sure that your boat’s hull and gelcoat stay in good shape.

So in this guide, we’re going to take a closer look at the best boat fenders on the market right now.

We’ve reviewed all sorts of models—from the traditional cylindrical fenders, round numbers useful where boats are tapered, ones that protect both the hull and rub rails to the more innovative designs available at the moment.

Specially designed for recreational trailered boats in protected moorings, the Polyform G Series are cylindrical bumpers with molded ribs that come in six different sizes and a vast array of bright, stylish, and long-lasting colors, so you can create the look you desire for your boat.

Polyform has been producing buoys for over 50 years, so in that time, they certainly have learned a thing or two about them. The G Series fenders are true proof of that! They boast great quality and are made of abrasion- and puncture-resistant material to ensure they can take a real beating.

The included ribs provide extra strength while the reinforced rope holds ensure long-term durability. Also, unlike other brands which have needle valves that are more prone to leaking, Polyform features a flat head screw seal, which is leak-proof.

The Polyform G Series Boat Fenders are shipped pre-inflated and without an inflation valve.

Five Oceans Inflatable Ribbed Boat Fender

five-oceans-inflatable-ribbed-boat-fender-hanging

Where to buy Five Oceans Inflatable Ribbed Boat Fender:

The Five Oceans Fender Set is a package that includes 4 inflatable fenders, 4 ropes and a pump. It’s a complete set for smaller boats or a good addition to a larger boat’s arsenal of bumpers.

This package is one of the best examples of a set of ribbed fenders made of marine-grade PVC. This 6.5×23-inch set is a budget option, but one that demanded tested. As a starter set for a smaller boat, like a 30-foot bowrider, they’d do just fine. But for anything more, that required some checking.

We took them sailing over a summer season, testing them with a 36-foot, 11-ton steel-hauled boat. Five Oceans’ fender set passed just fine. Read our in-depth review to find out more.

Norestar 4-Pack Ribbed

Where to buy Norestar 4-Pack Ribbed:

This kit from Norestar comes with 4 inflatable fenders as well as 4 black 5’ x 3/8” fender lines. For smaller craft, 20 feet and under, this will be all you need for docking.

Depending on your necessities, the Norestar bumpers can be hung either vertically or horizontally as they feature a double-eye design. They also come with non-abrasive vertical ribs for both strength and protection as well as a tough marine-grade vinyl construction, which means they can withstand the salt, sun, and attrition.

Available in black and blue.

  • Polyform A Series Buoy

Polyform A Series Buoy

Where to buy Polyform A Series Buoy:

Available in a variety of high-visibility colors and eight different sizes, the Polyform A Series Buoy is a versatile cylindrical fender. Popular as a punching bag for its form and durability, it’s usefulness when landing a heavy boat is tested and true.

The A Series buoy features Polyform’s iconic blue tops and rope eye and it’s made as a single piece of heavy-duty and flexible vinyl for maximum strength and durability.

This buoy has proven itself in the most adverse weather conditions, and besides functioning as a boat fender, it may also be used as a marker buoy, mooring buoy, anchor buoy, and even as a punching bag.

Also, the three largest sizes, the A-5, A-6, and A-7, now come with the Dual Valve system for quick deflation and storage.

To inflate your buoy, you can use either a hand pump or an air compressor. First, unscrew the cap from the air valve with a flathead screwdriver. If using a hand pump, simply insert the nozzle into the air valve and pump until it’s full. In case you use an air compressor, set the compressor to 30 psi or less and inflate the buoy up to a maximum of 2 psi. Once you’re done inflating, use the screwdriver to tighten the cap back into the valve.

  • A-0: 8” x 11.5”
  • A-1: 11” x 15”
  • A-2: 14.5” x 19.5”
  • A-3: 17” x 23”
  • A-4: 20.5” x 27”
  • A-5: 27” x 36”
  • A-6: 34” x 44”
  • A-7: 39” x 54”

Taylor Made Low Freeboard

Taylor Made Low Freeboard 5

Where to buy Taylor Made Low Freeboard:

Made of heavy-duty marine-grade vinyl and boasting an L-shaped form, this novel option from Taylor Made was specifically designed to meet the demands of small vessels such as bass boats, ski boats, and other low freeboard boats.

Due to its unconventional design, the Low Freeboard Boat Fender provides excellent protection for both the gunwales and rub rails. Also, because they conform to the boat’s body, they will stay securely in place and won’t shift around, unlike traditional cylindrical bumpers. For dinghies that can lower into the water with rain, this rail hugging model stays in place.

They can be tied over the cleats to position them higher on the boat and can be easily inflated through a rubber football needle valve.

Available in two sizes and four metallic colors—except for the white one—the Low Freeboard Boat Fender is both beautiful and robust while also offering excellent protection against the docks.

MISSION Boat Gear Sentry

MISSION Boat Gear Sentry

Where to buy MISSION Boat Gear Sentry:

Say goodbye to lines, knots, and all the hassle that usually comes with docking with the next boat fenders.

The Sentry boat bumpers from MISSION feature a modern and cutting-edge design that is both protective and time-saving. They boast a cross-linked closed-cell foam construction—a material that doesn’t absorb water and resists fading from the sun’s damaging UV rays—along with an innovative hanging system, which together with their shape and length protect both the lower and upper parts of the rub rails.

But it doesn’t stop there!

They also align beautifully with the contour of your vessel’s hull, thus preventing them from getting caught on top of the dock or pushed out of position. Plus, their integrated strap system easily attaches to the boat’s cleats and docks for quick and easy setup.

  • Measurements: 22” tall x 9” wide x 5.5” thick

VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender

VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender

Where to buy VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender:

Suitable for boats, yachts, sailboats, rowboats, and docks, this fender kit from VIVOHOME comes with four boat fenders—available in the 6.5 x 24 in., and 8.5 x 27 in. sizes—four 5.2’ ropes, four inflating needles, as well as a hand pump to inflate your bumpers.

This set of fenders boasts an oval design, a heavy-duty marine-grade UV-resistant PVC construction, reinforced eyelets on both ends—so you can safely hang them either vertically or horizontally—as well as vertical ribs for added strength.

They also feature a great buffer effect, which will protect your vessel from damage caused by heavy collisions between hard surfaces.

As previously mentioned, this kit comes with everything you need to easily inflate and install them. And even after a couple of weeks, there have been no issues with deflation whatsoever. They’re also very compact for convenient storage.

The VIVOHOME Vinyl Ribbed Marine Boat Fenders are available in four colors—blue, white, red, and black—and they fit boats from 19 to 29ft.

Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector

Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector

Where to buy Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector:

The BoatTector Contour Fenders from Extreme Max features a wraparound design that protects against hitting the underside of a dock in low tide. It conforms to your boat’s body and protects both the gunwale and hull, along with a closed-cell foam construction so you don’t have to worry about inflating them.

Designed to withstand the wear and tear of the marine environment, they also boast a marine-grade tri-laminate cover, double thermal-bonded seams, and corrosion-proof polycarbonate grommets

Due to their unconventional square design, they fold quite easily for convenient storage. But be aware that because they’re so lightweight, if they’re not securely stowed, they will fly away.

Available in three colors—white, black, and blue—the pack comes with a pair of fenders (24” x 6. 5” x 2. 5”) as well as two fender lines (⅜” x 6’), and for your peace of mind, the brand also offers you a two-year replacement.

Overall, good quality bumpers at a great price. However, they’re best suited for small boats—16 feet or less—and calm waters as opposed to ocean use.

  • EVA foam in thermal sealed laminate
  • Measurements: 24” x 6. 5” x 2. 5”

Attwood Softside 3-Pack

Attwood Softside 3-Pack

Where to buy Attwood Softside 3-Pack:

The Attwood boat fenders only come in one size, one color, and absolutely no inflation is needed. And although they are simple as they come, they do exactly what you expect them to: offer great protection for your boat with the added bonus of being budget-friendly.

Made from tough and lightweight polymeric material, these fenders feature a seamless one-piece construction, an oval shape together with ribbed sides to prevent them from rolling against the hull, as well as double-molded eye ends for extra strength.

The pack comes with 3 already inflated fenders but sadly, no liners.

Ideal for pontoon boats , these bumpers do a great job at protecting your vessel and they also seem to be quite durable—only time will tell.

  • Soft Polymeric
  • Measurements: 5”

Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector

Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector

Where to buy Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector:

Extreme Max makes another bumper value pack featuring four 6. 5” x 22” boat fenders and four 3/8” x 5’ fender lines.

These bumpers from Extreme Max boast a sturdy PVC construction along with thick walls and reinforced ribs for improved protection, as well as a needle valve so you can adjust each fender to your desired pressure.

In addition, reinforced molded eyelets at each end of the fender for added strength and durability, 12 bright colors for you to choose from, and a two-year warranty.

All in all, these are great quality utility fenders at an amazing price. However, the included ropes are not as sturdy as the ones from other brands, and even though they say the fenders are UV-stabilized and chemically-resistant, their vibrant colors haven’t held for long.

  • Fender: 6. 5” x 22”
  • Rope: 3/8” x 5’

Boat Fenders | Buyer’s Guide

As you’ve just seen from our list above, boat fenders come in all shapes and sizes. And in order for them to correctly shield your vessel from possible damages, they should be the right size, shape, and amount.

That’s why we’ve prepared this buyer’s guide to help you decide which type of fenders are better suited to your boat.

So here are the main things to consider before buying boat fenders:

Get the right size fender. Heavier boats require bigger sizes.

Types of Fenders

There is a great variety of boat fenders on the market right now. Although most of them only have one function in mind, which is to protect your vessel, others will also serve different purposes as well as different boat sizes.

These are the differences between the main types of boat fenders:

Cylindrical double-hole

  • Most popular option
  • It comes with rope eyes at both ends
  • It can be hung either vertically with one line or horizontally with two lines
  • Great for short and lightweight vessels

Cylindrical center-hole

  • Also known as hole-through-middle (HTM) boat fenders
  • It can be hung either vertically or horizontally using only one line
  • It provides more cushioning than the double-hole model, which makes it ideal for large boats

Cylindrical single-hole

  • It is the most basic type of boat bumper
  • It can only be hung vertically
  • Ideal for rafting two boats together
  • Mostly used by large powerboats and commercial vessels
  • Commonly used as mooring and fishing line buoys
  • More difficult to store

Other types

  • Low freeboard fenders:  This type of fender sits high on the hull and hangs inward over the gunwale, which makes it ideal for smaller vessels such as bass boats.
  • Transom mounted fenders : As the name implies, this type of fender protects your boat’s transom or swim step when you dock from the stern.

All inflatable boat fenders will either come in vinyl or PVC. Vinyl is the cheaper material, but that does not mean vinyl fenders will be low quality. As long as they are cared for, they will last many years. Rinse them every once in a while to prevent algae from growing too thickly.

PVC is the same material used for  inflatable paddle boards . It’s a more durable material that can withstand more exposure and resists puncturing a little more than vinyl.

To decide which size of boat fenders suit your vessel best, you need to consider 3 things: your boat’s length, weight, and where you moor. This last one is very important because choppy and windy mooring conditions will require more fenders as well as bigger ones.

For different boats, different fenders are needed. Motor yachts will require very big bumpers because of their weight and higher railing. For pontoon boats , you could get away with having several smaller ones to save space when they’re not in use.

A good rule of thumb is that cylindrical fenders should have 1 inch of diameter for every 5 feet of boat length, while round fenders should have 2 inches per 5 feet of boat length.

So, if you own a 20’ – 25’ boat, you should invest in 6”- 6.5” cylindrical boat bumpers or 15” round boat fenders.

Size matters sometimes. But even smaller boat fenders will do the job. The weight of a boat determines how much a fender will be stressed and worked.

Number of Fenders

Having the proper number of boat fenders is as important as having the correct shape and size.

A general rule of thumb for the number of fenders you should bring aboard is 1 fender per 10 feet of waterline, with a minimum of three overall.

So, for example, if you own a 20-foot boat, you should carry 3 fenders (6”- 6.5” cylindrical fenders or 15” round ones).

Keep in mind that the more, the better—less chance of hull damage—but also remember that you’re going to need enough room to store them—which brings us to our next topic.

When buying boat fenders, you should also think about where you plan to keep them while you’re on the water.

Although most fenders are inflatable, having to constantly inflate and deflate them is a rather inconvenient task. So make sure you have a designated spot in your vessel to tuck them away while you’re sailing.

On top of that, remember that their shapes will also matter, as cylindrical fenders will be easier to store as opposed to round ones.

You can also invest in fender racks. They will keep your fenders securely out of the way when you’re on the water, while also conveniently at hand when you need them.

Now we turn to you!

Frequently asked questions

The answer to this question will depend on the size of your boat, mooring conditions, and of course, your budget. It’s not easy to pick one specific best boat bumpers and that is why we’ve created this extensive guide on the best boat fenders.

However, at this very moment, these are our own favorites:

(read full reviews of each on DIVEIN.com – click the links above)

Also known as boat bumpers, boat fenders are cushions that prevent your watercraft from bumping against other vessels, dock, or pier, so as to avoid scratches and damages to your watercraft’s hull and coating .

Fenders must be placed at the correct height, otherwise, they won’t offer your boat proper protection. Hang the fenders just above the waterline so that their bottoms just skim the water’s surface. This will limit the swing arc, thus preventing the dock from pushing the fender up and out of position.

A good rule of thumb for boat fender size is that cylindrical fenders should have 1 inch of diameter for every 5 feet of boat length, while round fenders should have 2 inches per 5 feet of boat length.

To tie fenders to your boat, first, remember to hang them above the waterline so that their bottoms just skim the water’s surface, and also, make sure to tie them to a solid anchor point, such as a station or a cleat. Do not tie boat fenders on lifelines as they are not made to withstand the stress.

Next, take your line and go over the railing, then behind it, then over the railing again, and then back up. This is what’s known as a clove hitch knot.

For better illustration, here’s a short video with two easy ways to tie a clove hitch knot:

You can wash your boat fenders with either a mild detergent or soap—mineral spirits such as paint thinner works too. Just remember not to use harsh cleaning agents such as acetone and lacquer thinner as they will damage your bumpers.

You can also use a stiff brush for scrubbing.

To make cleaning your fenders a less demanding task, give them a thorough clean after each use, or better yet, invest in washable fender covers for easy cleaning

Boat fenders should be used both at the port and starboard sides of your boat, for cushioning all the points of impact. Extra fenders are also useful when docking to manually slide between two points of contact when needed.

Good Morning, you need to assess the Five Oceans Fenders, well-positioned in the Amazon ranking, TOP 10. Good quality, very complete kit.

Good afternoon Adrian. Thanks for the tip. Have been trying them out for the past couple of weeks. A review is on the way. You’re right they are a nice and complete kit. Inflate fairly easily and hold air after some serious days in the sun. The quality of the rope–and its length–is just fine and the added touch of a reflective strip at the top is very visible and nice for the evenings. Review and images on their way.

Torben Lonne

Thank you, we’ll take a look at them next time we test.

Boat Fender Types, Shapes and Applications.

Have a question about boat fenders before you make your purchase? Learn about the different types, applications and shapes of boat fenders. In the boating world, a fender is a bumper used to absorb the kinetic energy of a boat or vessel berthing against a jetty, quay wall or other vessel. Fenders are used to prevent damage to boats, vessels and berthing structures. To do this, fenders usually have high energy absorption and low reaction force. Fenders are typically manufactured out of rubber, foam elastomer or plastic. Rubber fenders are either extruded or made in a mold. The type of fender that is most suitable for an application depends on many variables, including dimensions and displacement of the vessel, maximum allowable stand-off, berthing structure, tidal variations and other berth-specific conditions. The size of the fender unit is based on the berthing energy of the vessel which is related to the square of the berthing velocity.

Historically, fenders were woven from rope in a variety of patterns. Fenders of woven rope are still used today by historic boat owners.

Yachts, small leisure craft and support vessels typically have mobile fenders which are placed between the boat and the dock as the boat approaches the dock. Docks and other marine structures, such as canal entrances and bases of bridges, have permanent fenders placed to avoid damage from boats. Old tires are often used as fenders in such places.

If you've been boating, you are probably aware that it's inevitable to encounter situations where your boat bumps into something like another boat, a quay wall, or while docking. When tragedy strikes from running into something, it can create minor to major damage resulting in having to repair the damage which can become very costly and time consuming. Boat fenders provide a safety barrier between the boat and the un-wanted object that is bumping into the boat. At one point in time ropes or old tires were found hanging down the side of the boat to protect against impact. However, with today's technology, fenders are not only more visually pleasing than a rope and an old tire, but are designed from hours of testing and science to ensure your boats has the best protecting from the damaged caused by running into a wall, a boat or a dock.

Fenders come in a multitude of shapes, functions and applications:

Types of Fenders

Ship to quay fenders.

Ship to quay fenders are found at ports, docks, quay walls and berthing structures. They are designed to absorb the energy when of a berthing boat. These type of fenders are not found on boats, but instead, our found on the walls to prevent damage to the berthing boat.

There are several types of these marine fenders

  • Cylindrical
  • Foam Elastomer

Ship-to-Ship

Ship-to-ship fenders are specifically designed to prevent damage from two boats colliding. These type of fenders include :

Boat and Vessel

Boat Fenders are the most common fenders found hanging from recreational boats, tugboats, passenger boats and yachts.

These type of fenders include:

Shapes, Functions and Applications

  • Cylindrical Fenders
  • A cylindrical fender is a very common fender used when you want to make sure the berthing of your boats is safe from damage from the dock or port. This type of fender is usually installed by the dock owner or maintenance man to the walls that are bumped into while berthing.
  • Arch Fenders
  • Arch fenders are normally used by small to midsize boats or vessels, Arch Fenders are a similar to cylindrical fenders, except for they perform better.
  • Cell Fenders
  • Cell fenders are the biggest fenders made of rubber from a mold. Cell fenders are extremely sturdy offering minimal reaction. They can handle higher impact and null more energy from any direction.
  • Cone Fenders
  • A cone fender is a cell fender with improvement to the design and functionality. You will find these types of fenders where high-tide is present and typically spaced evenly apart with a panel to distribute the brunt force of a berthing boat.
  • Pneumatic Fenders
  • Pneumatic fenders are used for a protective barrier between two ships at sea exchanging, giving or receiving goods. They have a low reaction force and low deflection. This type of fender will typically comply with the ISO 17357 standards. It is also called Yokohama fender or floating fender.
  • Hydro-Pneumatic Fenders
  • Hydro-Pneumatic Fenders were designed for Submarines. The design depends on the hull, berthing methods, energy absorption, type of submarine and jetty design. They are able to remain in the up-right position while in water to prevent the fender from tipping over and compromising its usefulness.
  • Foam Elastomer Fenders
  • Similar to a pneumatic fender, foam elastomer fenders core is made of a Polyethylene foam core surrounded by nylon or Kevlar skin. This fender will not lose its structural integrity when punctured.
  • D-fenders are usually seen around smaller jetties and used on vessels. Engineered with compression molded material.
  • Square Fenders
  • Similar to D-fenders, Square fenders are generally used on Tug boats, boats and ships.
  • Wing Fenders
  • Similar to D-fenders, wing fenders withstand the harsh elements from sea water and are very easy to install.
  • Keyhole Fenders
  • Keyhole fender will be found on Tug boats, boats and ships. They are extremely easy to install and offer maximum protection to Tug and Ferries.
  • Tug Boat Fenders
  • You guessed it- Tug boat fenders are used for Tug boats. They are very comprised of highly resistant rubber with great vitality properties. These types of fender are mostly found with small boat and tug owners, and are sea water damage resistant.

Boat bumpers and fenders come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Not only are there cylinder fenders, but there are round ones, flat ones, and so many more types of fenders. By the end of this article, you will know absolutely everything about boat fenders and which ones you will need for your vessel.

First I’m going to talk about the three most popular fenders and then talk more about unique fenders later in the article.

3 most popular boat fenders

Best all-around.

small yacht fenders

Cylinder Fenders

Commonly used on boats as they provide a large surface area and can still be stored quite easily.

Best For Large Boats

small yacht fenders

Spherical Fenders

These fenders can withstand a lot of force. So they’re best used for large boats and during docking.

Best For Small Boats

small yacht fenders

Flat Fenders

Easily stored, but doesn’t have a large enough diameter to handle heavy or maneuvering boats.

Although these are the most used fenders, there are many more available on the market including:

Boat fender sizing

Before we start talking more about specific fenders, let’s look at what size you need to get.

The general rule is 1″ of diameter for cylindrical fenders or 2″ of diameter for spherical fenders for every 5 feet of boat length. However, it’s never a bad idea to get a size larger than recommended, especially if you’re boat is in an area that gets a lot of storms, wind, waves, etc. which could cause it to bash against a dock.

Boat Length (ft)Cylinder Fender Diameter (in)Spherical Fender Diameter (in)Flat fender Size

21′-25′5″10″Medium

31′-35′7″14″Medium

Pros and cons of each fender type

Below I’ve listed all the different types of boat fenders. I’ve included pictures, pros and cons, and more about each one. Click on the fender you want to learn more about.

  • Easy to store
  • Large surface area
  • Works for pretty much all types of boats
  • Lots of different size options
  • Does not have as large a diameter as spherical fenders
  • Can slip pretty easily

There are two different types of cylinder fenders including:

small yacht fenders

Double-eye cylinder fenders are usually smaller than center-hole fenders making them easy to store away and easy to use. They have a dual-hole system, allowing you to connect a rope to both sides of the fender.

These fenders are most popular with small to medium-sized boats, but they do make the large enough for large vessels as well.

Center-hole

small yacht fenders

Center-hole cylinder fenders can be used both on your boat and on your dock. You can easily tie them sideways on a dock or your boat without needing to connect multiple ropes to both sides of the fender. A downside to them is that they are bulky and hard to store.

I usually only recommend having one or two of these fenders on your boat to protect the largest surface area (generally the sides near the stern). And if you have a boat smaller than 30 feet, you probably won’t need one.

  • Large diameter means more protection
  • Many different sizes
  • Hard to store
  • Can slip or move easily
  • Lightweight
  • Not as effective as inflatable fenders

small yacht fenders

  • Helps adjusts your hull into your slip

small yacht fenders

  • Protects your transom
  • Great if you have a dingy or jet ski attached to your stern

small yacht fenders

  • Great for protecting your boat against sea walls or poles
  • Basically a mix of a flat fender and cylinder fender
  • Best to use on a dock and not on your boat

small yacht fenders

  • Provide a lot of protection (best used for large vessels)
  • Stay centered on a pole

small yacht fenders

  • Don’t slip as easily as cylinder fenders
  • Don’t cause scratches or marks
  • Not as protective as cylinder fenders

small yacht fenders

  • Protect the top and sides of your boat
  • Best for low riding bass boats

small yacht fenders

  • Easily clip onto pontoons
  • Only can be used for pontoon boats

small yacht fenders

  • Protects your boat and dock in case of errant docking

small yacht fenders

  • Comes in many different sizes
  • Very large surface area
  • Very large diameter
  • Can be deflated and stored easily
  • May need to reinflate them every so often

Many boats, especially larger ones are best protected by multiple different types of fenders on the boat and on the dock. For example, Yachts can be protected by cylinder fenders and/or spherical fenders, but it’s always a good idea to also have dock bumpers such as inflatable fenders, V-shaped fenders, and cushion fenders.

Best fender accessories

Fender accessories can help make your life easier and protect your boat from fender marks and scratches. Here are all of the different accessories I was able to find:

Fender covers

small yacht fenders

Fender covers not only improve the aesthetic of boat fenders, but they also help you avoid any marks or scratches that may be caused by them.

Although fenders are meant to cushion your boat, the plastic used on them is still quite hard and can rub away your gel coat over time, especially if you have a heavy boat in a high current area.

Having a fender cover will help eliminate any possible damage.

small yacht fenders

One of the most annoying things to do when you’re relaxing at the sand bar or beach is to have to rush your bumpers on as someone is pulling their boat up to you.

This product called Fendergrip, made by New World Marine solves this. It makes putting your fenders down to the perfect height and keeping them there a million times easier.

You don’t even have to tie any notes, just adjust the rope to the right hight and clamp it down.

Fender rack

small yacht fenders

A fender rack makes storing, securing, and deploying cylinder fenders so much easier than if you were to store them in storage compartments in your boat.

Taylor Made makes this one, and it easily connects to almost any railing or stanchion system.

The buy now button below puts two different products in your Amazon cart, one is a fender rack for 7-9 inch diameter fenders, and the other is for 9-11 inch. Just make sure to delete the one that is not the correct size for you.

What are the best boat fender brands?

The brand most of the products I am recommending in this article is Taylor Made and sold on Amazon. They have been in the fender business for over a century and have almost every kind of boat bumper/fender you could dream for.

However, you can expect the same or similar quality from other brands such as:

  • Bass Pro Shops

How many fenders should a boat have?

You should have 1 fender per side for every 5-10 feet of boat, and no boat should have less than 3 fenders per side. Meaning a 15-foot boat should have 3 fenders per side, and a 50-foot boat should have 5-10 fenders per side. The amount you should use depends on factors such as where you are mooring, weather conditions, etc.

Fender should not be out when you are moving, they will just slow you down. However, when you are in a situation in which you need to put them down, they should be spread out evenly across your hull such as in the vessel from this image:

How to clean boat fenders

Due to algae and barnacles, boat fenders can get very dirty very fast. This can rub off on your boat and leave algae marks that can be hard to get out. In order to keep them clean, you should:

  • Keep them out of the water as much as possible . Leaving fenders in the water is the number one cause of dirty fenders. Marine growth will start to form in as little as a week and will be a pain to get out.
  • Dry them off before putting them into storage . Water can cause mold and algae growth, so making sure you dry your fenders off and don’t store them in a wet area is important in keeping them clean.
  • Clean your fenders with soap and fresh water regularly . Whenever you clean your boat, it’s always a good idea to do your fenders as well. Cleaning them regularly will make sure you don’t have to worry about any deep stains that may be very hard to get out.

However, if you fenders are already dirty and look something like the image below, you will need to use a few products and cleaning techniques to get them looking good again.

small yacht fenders

Here are the 4 steps to cleaning a boat fender:

  • Take your fender somewhere away from the water or grass so no cleaning products can harm anything.
  • Apply regular cleaning soap and cleaner bleach spray to the fenders and scrub them with a moderately stiff bristle brush .
  • You can also use a pressure washer to get off any stains and marine growth.

I would not recommend you use any harsh chemicals as this can eat away the plastics on your fenders and not only reduce their lifespan but also possibly cause the plastics to rub off and stain your boat hull.

Added Tip: After lightly cleaning your fenders, you can spray them with tire foam . This will not only clean them more, but it will also restore their look.

Sometimes your fender may be dirty due to it rubbing off paint and gel-coat on your hull. Here is a clear example of this:

small yacht fenders

If you believe this is happening, you should purchase a fender cover such as this one to protect your hull and fender. Fender covers cover the hard plastic on fenders and eliminate rubbing.

How to tie a boat fender

If you don’t have fender clips, tying your fender to a rail requires a bit more effort. Check out the video below to learn how:

Where to find good deals on boat fenders

Included in this article are links to boat fenders mostly made by Taylor Made and sold on Amazon. These are top-end fenders and will last you a very long time. However, they are a bit pricy when compared to other brands on Amazon.

After checking out some of these cheaper brands, here are the three I found to have the best reviews and most relevant products:

  • Dock Edge (specialize in dock bumpers including dock edges, dock wheels, etc.)
  • Affordura (medium-priced cylinder fenders)
  • Vingli (Very cheap cylinder fenders)

However, another great way to find boat bumpers and fenders is on the used market. For example, I went to Facebook Marketplace and searched for “boat fenders”. Here are the results:

small yacht fenders

Plenty of deals on fenders, many of which are made by good brands such as Taylor Made. They may need a bit of cleaning , but after that there about as good as new. I would recommend purchasing used from high-quality brands such as Taylor-made or polyform over the super cheap Amazon brands. Even though there used, they will still most likely last longer.

And before I end this article, here’s another look at the most popular boat fenders, so you don’t have to scroll all the way up to the top to purchase them.

Jimmy Green Marine stock an extensive range of yacht and boat fenders from Majoni, Polyform Norway and Plastimo.

Boat fenders offer essential protection for yachts or anything afloat, when they come in to contact with harbour walls, pontoons, pilings and other yachts.

Dock fenders, also known as bumpers, are permanently fitted to the pontoon or dock in areas of frequent use e.g. the pontoon in your allotted marina berth.

https://jimmygreen.com/img/cms/Mooring/Fenders/Plastimo dock fender in situ for bow defence.

Boat fenders are relatively inexpensive compared with gelcoat or even structural yacht repairs so it makes sense to have an adequate quantity of the correct size and configuration onboard.

Boat fenders come in several different shapes and a multitude of different sizes to safeguard the topsides, the bow or stem and the stern of any design of watercraft.

Calculate the optimum number of fenders according to their shape and size in preparation for your typical mooring conditions, whether in your home berth or visiting other ports or marinas. Then add some extra for use in severe conditions. Bear in mind that although more fenders are always going to be useful, they will all need to be stowed onboard securely.

Jimmy Green Marine offer two main types of boat fender which cover most mooring situations:

Cylindrical fenders with a rope eye at both ends can be hung vertically when mooring against predominantly flat harbour walls, docks and pontoons or horizontally against pilings and other awkward protrusions.

Cylindrical Fenders

Round or pear shaped fenders with one rope eye are very similar to mooring buoys and can be hung vertically for heavy load points and where extra diameter is required to allow for a yacht’s fore and aft curve. They are also usefully deployed to protect the stern platform when mooring stern to.

Dock fender with round buoy for stern protection

Other types include bow fenders

Bow fender

Plus through hole fenders, transom corner fenders, specialist flat narrow boat fenders and large inflatable fenders for larger yachts.

Take these factors into account when selecting the appropriate size for your fenders: Yacht Length Overall, Yacht Displacement (weight) and the anticipated mooring conditions

There is an old fashioned rule of thumb that will give you a starting point before making a final decision based on these three main factors.

Rule of Thumb 1 = 1 inch fender diameter or 2 inch round fender diameter for every 4 or 5 feet of yacht length overall.

The rule has been interpreted and converted approximately into modern metric equivalents in the table:

Fender Frequency Guide

How to set up your fenders.

There is another old rule of thumb for judging how many boat fenders does a boat need – 1 fender per 10 feet of Low Waterline Length (LWL) with a minimum of 3 for boats of 20 feet or less. The rule has been developed into a modern metric measure equivalent.

Boat Fender Frequency Guide
Yacht LWL under 6m 6m-10m 10m-14m 14m-16m 16m-18m
Fenders 3 4 5 6 7

Fenders need to be deployed in a proper fashion paying due care and attention to the spacing and height of the fenders and an assessment of how many of the total should be round rather than cylindrical fenders.

Deploy at least one fender amidships (maximum beam) with the remainder spaced appropriately fore and aft from the centre outward.

When mooring alongside another yacht (rafting up) an extra fender or two amidships will be required for adequate protection. An extra round fender deployed fore and aft will help to take up the increased gap between the topsides.

Hang fenders so that they are always just clear of the water or higher where required because of the pontoon height. Secure the fender lanyards to strong, deck level anchorage points. Avoid using lifelines or guard wires if possible because they are not designed to withstand the potential stresses and strains. A lower attachment point maintains the fender in position better by lessening the arc or swing.

Cleaning Fenders

Keep your fenders clean and free from harmful grit by washing with soap and water. Harsh cleaning agents are not advisable as they will harm the surface of the fender.

Fender covers are washable and help to keep your fenders clean and grit free as well as protecting them from the elements.

Best Crimpers and Strippers for Fixing Marine Electrical Connectors

We like going one size over what is often recommended for smaller boats. The advantages are a.Less stretch. Nylon can be too stretchy, but polyester not stretchy enough. One size over can be a Goldilocks answer. b.Better wear resistance. Because we like using short chain when hand-hauling, we cover the first 10 feet with a webbing chafe guard. This is very cut resistant, because unlike the rope inside, it is floating and not under tension. c. Better grip. ⅜-in. is pretty hard to grab with the wind is up. ½-in. fits our hands better. Inflatable Boat Fenders Test

Fenders from aere, easystow, and stowaway endure poking, prodding, and crushing as practical sailor determines whether inflatable bumpers are as tough as traditional boat fenders..

small yacht fenders

All boats require fenders at some point (docking, rafting, etc.), and the larger the fender needed to create space between boat hull and potential damage, the larger the space the fender will occupy when stored.

A conundrum with traditional fenders is that boat owners are often forced to choose fender size based on available storage space rather than whats required for even moderate conditions, much less extreme situations like storms, rough commercial piers, or poorly maintained docks.

An obvious solution is inflatable fenders, which promise as much impact protection as conventional fenders without the storage headaches. Curious as to whether these claims were just hot air, we put products from three major players in the inflatable fender market to work: StowAway Boat Fenders from DACA Innovations, Aere fenders from Praktek, and Easystow Fenders from Seoladair.

Praktek of Coral Springs, Fla., has been supplying inflatable fenders to the recreational, mega-yacht, commercial, and military markets for over a decade.

Prakteks Aere Inflatable Fenders use a single bladder made from heavy, high-denier, polyester fabric (like that used in inflatable dinghies) that has built-in UV protection and is heavily PVC coated inside and outside. Each fender is hand-glued with additional seam reinforcement three to seven layers thick (depending on seam location) to assure seam integrity. The company also offers a line of “Extreme Duty” fenders constructed of multiple layers of heavier material.

Aere’ Boat Fenders

Like all of the fenders tested, the Aere performed well in the compression test (see How We Tested) but its durable material stood out in the abrasion test.

Line attachment points are welded stainless steel D-rings securely fastened to a layered reinforced material. Inflation and deflation fills are low-profile inflatable dinghy-style valves. Our test fender used a Bravo valve with a spring-loaded stem, or poppet, that is pushed down and locked in the open position for deflation.

Although the inflation valves are high quality (similar to those used on inflatable boats), they proved to be the most complicated to use in this test. One notable feature of the 12×29 fender that we tested is that it will self-inflate about 80 percent with a pull on the D-rings. You can fill it the rest of the way with lung-power. We used a generic foot pump to inflate the Aere.

The Aere comes in a variety of sizes and colors, and offers the most “polished” appearance of the fenders tested, in our opinion. A big plus is the Aeres ability to be owner- repaired using readily available glue and patches, particularly for those sailing in remote locations.

Bottom Line: The Aere is pricey and its inflation valves are more complex than the others (more parts that can break), but they are high-quality and effective. The Aere is a lightweight, tough fender that has excellent abrasion resistance. We recommend it for those willing to spend a little extra for the polished look.

Easystow

Easystow fenders are made by Seoladair, a small company in LaGrange, Ill., that also manufactures the Boomkicker vang and other products.

Easystow fenders have an inflatable, machine-sealed urethane film bladder inside a thick, polyester-reinforced PVC exterior. The cover for the original “heavy-duty model” we tested is actually extruded as a one-piece tube, providing continuous reinforcement (and greater strength) with no longitudinal seam to catch or split. When deflated, it can be rolled or folded for storage. The top and bottom seams are double-sewn with industrial strength, UV-resistant thread and include six webbing loops for attaching lines.

This thick-skinned fender-at 1/8-inch, its the thickest of the fenders tested-held up well to our abrasion test. There was some scratching to the cover, but the bladder remained fully protected. It also survived the puncture-resistance test well.

Easystow makers claim the fenders can withstand up to 40 psi without ballooning, allowing the fender to be pumped up firmer and support significantly higher loads. The Easy-stow we tested passed the compression test with flying colors.

Easystow uses a rubber tube for inflation and deflation, a simple arrangement that has no threads to cross, O-rings to replace, or caps to lose. (See photo page 33.) The blended rubber tubes are located at the end of the fender and are designed for constant flexing. To seal, the tube is folded in half and inserted under a protective cover, which keeps the tube folded and away from harm.

The tube is smaller than the intake valves of the fenders tested, so the Easy- stow took the longest to inflate and deflate. But the sheer simplicity of the design makes the processes easy.

StowAway

We like the rectangular pillow shape the Easystow takes when inflated-it helps prevent rolling when placed against docks or pilings and makes a good replacement for fender boards. This shape (plus the generous number of tie points provided) also allows multiple fenders to be tied together and hung vertically, providing a large, relatively stable grid of protection.

Easystow Fenders are available in heavy-duty and standard-duty models, as well as new model made from heavy-duty, 40-ounce urethane. (We tested the heavy-duty model.) The new urethane fabric is manufactured to meet U.S. military specifications and has advanced UV protection. The fender comes with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturers defects, the best offer of the lot.

Bottom Line: The Easystow is a tough, no-nonsense fender built to take abuse. Its superior warranty and price give it the edge and the Best Choice pick.

StowAway Boat Fenders are marketed by DACA Innovations, a Florida-based manufacturer that also distributes Boat Bunkers in- water mooring stations.

StowAway fenders have an inner vinyl bladder protected by a nylon cover. A recessed, high-volume, one-way valve controls inflation/deflation. To inflate, users pull open the valve flap, open the valve cap, and attach the pump nozzle. To deflate, the one-way valve assembly is unscrewed from the bladder, allowing air to escape. The drawback is that the valve assembly must be detached and it could easily be dropped overboard or lost during use.

The StowAway test fender survived the compression testing intact, however, it didnt fare as well in the durability tests. Testers noted that the inner bladder became deformed during puncture-resistance testing and the outer cover was badly shredded during the abrasion test.

Easystow

DACA Chief Executive Officer Bruce Nelson explained that StowAway fenders are usually used for occasional use or to have as extras.

“Our fenders are not typically used on a permanent basis, and therefore are typically not subject to extreme abuse,” Nelson said.

Unlike the other fenders tested where users have to tie on lines to hang the fender, the StowAway comes with a sewn-on attachment strap with adjustable buckle on top for easy deployment. A stainless-steel ring on the opposite end allows it to be hung horizontally.

StowAway fenders are available in several sizes and colors. If you buy a kit of four fenders, youll save a few dollars and receive a free hand or foot pump and storage case. Testers liked the carrying case, which makes the pump and fenders readily accessible and easy to stow.

Bottom Line: Testers found the StowAway fenders appropriate for occasional use when rafting up or docking at well-maintained piers. But in our opinion, theyre not durable enough for regular use or in rough mooring situations.

While each of the fenders we tested meets the makers promises of protecting your hull while taking up less storage space than conventional fenders, testers top picks are the Aere and Easystow. For harsh daily use or as part of your storm preparation gear, both would be excellent choices. None of the fenders we tested appeared abrasive enough to scratch your gelcoat, but buying their optional covers would reduce that risk even further.

The Easystow costs less than the Aere fender, and it has the best warranty of the group-this is why it was named Best Choice ahead of the Aere. The more aesthetic Aere, which comes in a wider variety of colors and larger diameters than the Easystow, is Recommended.

. Their primary purpose is as extra fenders when you need them, without taking up a lot of space when you don't. Use them against pilings, piers or in raft ups, Often times a couple of standard fenders are not enough, especially in rolling or stormy conditions and they're nice to have around when others don't.  They're easy to inflate and easy to store.

stands up to chafe and scrapping against pilings and concrete piers with the thickest reinforced material of any inflatable boat fender on the market. are lighter weight, easier to handle and come in a variety of colors.

.  Their length offers more security and range compared to standard sized fenders that often get pushed out of position, and  there is less guessing on the best place to hang them against pilings and boats. Yet they store in a small fraction of their inflated size. Customers also use them permanently mounted in slips and they're great as replacements for difficult to use and store fender boards.
