X-Yachts Xc38: Review and test

The Xcruising (Xc) range was designed for eating up the sea miles in style and comfort, yet they retain the same design and build qualities that X-Yachts’ Performance (Xp) designs are renowned for. The first in the family, the Xc 45, was awarded the 2009 European Yacht of the Year the year of its launch. It was soon joined by the Xc 42, then in 2010 the range was further expanded with the introduction of the Xc 50 and the Xc 38 – the latter again taking the 2011 European Yacht of the Year award.

As with her bigger sister ships, the Xc 38 is an aft cockpit design with attractive, classically styled lines that maximise the deck space and give her such a gorgeous profile. The Xc’s hull lines are fuller than those of the Xp models and have a deeper V-section forward of the keel for a more comfortable motion on lengthy ocean passages. The larger hull volume also increases the space available for a more powerful engine, larger tanks and greater battery capacity – enabling them to undertake extended offshore cruises without foregoing those home comforts.

As with all X-Yachts, the Xc 38’s hull is constructed around an immensely strong steel frame that dissipates the loads from her keel-stepped mast and lead/cast iron keel over a large area – saving her hull from possible distortion when her rig is under severe stress.

The Xc 38 is only available in a two-cabin layout, with a spacious master cabin forward and a comfortable guest double in the port quarter. The absence of a second aft cabin allows for a luxurious heads and a cavernous cockpit locker instead – usually more popular among the long-term cruising fraternity.

Interior joinery is crafted from Khaya Mahogany veneer, with white laminate on the foremost bulkhead and inside the heads. The workmanship is of the highest standard, with all cabinetry hand assembled and finished by specialist joiners.

Eight portlights and three hatches provide ample natural light and ventilation.

A Fresh Look from X-Yachts

X-Yachts is a company that listens to its customers. For it’s racing owners, it builds the Xp line of performance-oriented racer-cruisers. But the company also has clients who want a boat that sails well, but with a few more comforts for longer voyages, and so it introduced the Xc range that includes models from 35 to 50 feet.

Since launching its Xc series, the Danish builder has sold more than 250 boats in its cruiser-racer line. Based on the feedback from owners, the company is now revamping the designs a bit and just announced the introduction of is newest update, the Xc 38 Next Generation.

The new model features more teak option on deck, larger portlights to let in more light below, new keels that will increase stability, a larger fold-down transom swim platform, and an option to integrate the engine’s throttle with the bow thruster.

Down below, the mahogany interior has been changed to teak, bookshelves have been added to saloon shelves and LED lighting is now used throughout.

The multi award winning X-Yachts XC 38 has to be one of the most desirable cruisers from the famous yard in Denmark.

This XC 38, built in 2017 and handed over at the X-Yachts yard, has been loved to bits by her owners. She is only for sale as they have decided to buy even bigger for long distance cruising. Built to a high specification, never raced or rallied, she is in turnkey condition ready for her new keepers.

Build quality is a given with X-Yachts, I have sailed and sold a good number of them. My all time favourite cruiser racers are the X332 and X362, they are so strong, powerful and like all X-Yachts have the 'smile' factor in spades! I understand from the many reviews on line the XC 38 continues the tradition and hope to get a chance to sail this one before she disappears.

The UK lockdown is making it difficult to get pictures, so the picture is from the X-Yachts brochure (thank you X-Yachts), but this is in hand and I hope to have some in the near future.
