"Just the best!"

"We've done the larger sails out of South Haven, and they can be fun. But for a more intimate experience, we chose Sailing South Haven. Just my husband and I, and the captain and deck hand. The weather was perfect, and it was fun to get to pilot the sailboat for a bit. You can help as much (or as little) as you want. And of course, the BYOB is awesome. Definitely worth the price."

Our Happy Clients

yacht charter lake michigan

What a perfect day out on Lake Michigan! We felt like kings and queens and the boat was as classy as the service. Eleven out of ten experience.

You won’t find more genuine hosts who want nothing less than the best experience for their guests. Whether it’s a slow cruise down the river or an anchored stay in the Play Pen, you’re sure to be charmed by the magic of the city. They think of everything so you don’t have to, a stress free experience. 10/10 would recommend.

We may be the Second City but Chi City Charters is second to none! Best boat on the lake, period!

We had the best time cruising along the Chicago River on Lock Leader. Our captain and crew were utter professionals and taught us a lot about Lake Michigan and Chicago. Highly recommended to see the city from a different view.

If you have any inquiries, please refer to our list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) provided below. In case you cannot find the answer you seek, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

A bareboat charter, as defined by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), is an arrangement granting the Charterer (the individual renting the yacht) temporary ownership and use of a vessel for a specified duration. Under this agreement, the Charterer assumes responsibility for the vessel, their guests, hiring their own Crew, and providing their own food and beverages.

It is important to note that the Charterer may either operate the vessel themselves if they possess the required credentials or choose to hire their own Captain and Crew.

However, it is crucial to adhere to the maximum passenger limit of 12 individuals for a bareboat chartered vessel.

For bareboat charters, the maximum capacity is 12 passengers, excluding the Captain and Crew.

The hired Captain and Crew are not counted as passengers. So, to clarify, the Charterer can bring a maximum of 11 guests.

Please keep in mind that infants and children are included in the total capacity count. Your Captain will count as an additional person, and the Crew can range from 1 to 2 people, depending on your specific requirements.

Once your booking is confirmed, Chi City Charters will provide you with a selection of qualified and approved Captains who have extensive knowledge of the yacht.

Our Captains can offer valuable recommendations regarding the number of Crew members you may require, depending on your specific charter plan. They have a network of experienced Crew members who are familiar with the yacht, and they can enhance your charter experience by providing additional safety, assistance, and service throughout your journey.

Alternatively, Charterers are welcome to provide their own certified Captain. It’s important to note that Captains are independent contractors hired directly by the Charterer and are not affiliated with or employed by Chi City Charters.

The rate for Captains typically ranges from $80 to $250 per hour, depending on their skills, experience, and qualifications, and this does not include gratuity.

It is customary to show appreciation to your hired Captain and Crew by leaving a gratuity of 18-25% of the total charter price (excluding the Captain’s hourly rate). Payment and gratuity should be made directly to your hired Captain.

Captains usually accept cash or payment through peer-to-peer platforms such as ApplePay, Venmo, Zelle, and others.

At Chi City Charters, we accept all major credit cards, including ApplePay, Venmo, Zelle, direct deposit, and cash, providing you with flexible payment options.

However, please be aware that we are unable to accept payment on behalf of your hired Captain or Crew, as they are separate contractors hired directly by the Charterer.

We recommend discussing the preferred method of payment with your hired Captain to ensure a smooth transaction process that aligns with their payment preferences.

Just had a fantastic experience with Knot Home Charters! We chartered the boat for a friends Bachelorette party Dan was so accommodating and easy to work with, he guided us and made everything so much easier. The yacht was a great size for us six ladies--it was comfortable and had everything we needed. The Captain took care of the rest while we enjoyed the Lake Michigan ride by making sure we were well taken care of throughout the trip. If you're looking for a smooth easy and enjoyable charter experience, I definitely recommend Knot Home Charters. I'll definitely be back for my next adventure!

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We hope to see you again soon!

What an amazing experience! We had the perfect day on the water, going up and down the coast. Dan was such a gracious and knowledgeable captain, giving us little tidbits bits of information about places along the marina and finding some beautiful huge houses up the Michigan side. He made sure we were comfortable with boat speed, and found the perfect place for a sunset view. I highly highly recommend anyone book an excursion if you're in the area - I know we will when we return :)

Had a wonderful Girl's Weekend in New Buffalo Michigan and Chartered Knot Home! Captain Dan was truly gracious and accommodating! The views from the lake are amazing! But even the Harbor Cruise was a lot of fun! I know we will use this Charter again!! Truly Highly Recommended!

Danny is the owner of this business and when I say he is phenomenal, I mean it with my whole soul. He's a stellar human and also an extremely professional business man. We were visiting Michigan City and New Buffalo, Michigan and wanted to take a boat ride. I researched this service on Yelp and he and two other companies came up. We sent messages to all three and he was the only one to respond, and did so in under 10 minutes. Danny was kind and professional from the jump, and accommodated our schedule, as we were only there for one night. Danny gave us the address to meet him, drove us back to where his yacht is docked, and guided us to it. He immediately offered us drinks and ensured we made ourselves comfortable. He asked us about ourselves, what brought us there, etc, and took us out on his yacht for a beautiful sunset cruise for an extremely fair and more than competitive price. His yacht is beautiful, and just the right size for two or a larger group! It's extremely clean, very comfortable, and well-decorated. Below deck is an air-conditioned space with a sink, microwave, restroom, large bed, and space to relax. By the time our trip had ended, I felt as though I'd known Danny for years. He is gracious, generous, professional, and has such a heart for people. I would highly recommend Danny and strongly encourage anyone to choose Knot Home for your next boat tour on beautiful Lake Michigan in New Buffalo. He's the only one we'll contact in the future.

What a wonderful day! Knot Home is a very comfortable yacht to spend the day on Lake Michigan. Danny and crew cruised the shoreline, I loved seeing all the beautiful homes and the dunes along the lake. We spent some time anchored and enjoyed the water. Danny was responsive, helpful, easy to work with and the perfect host. I recommend Knot Home next time you want to enjoy a perfect day on Lake Michigan!

Michigan Charter Boat Association (MCBA) Establishes Endowed Scholarship for LSSU Fisheries Students

calender icon

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – The Lake Superior State University Foundation is pleased to recognize the Michigan Charter Boat Association (MCBA) for their generous gift to create a scholarship endowment that will provide financial assistance to students pursuing a degree in fisheries. Their generosity is a significant step in the continuing mission of providing exemplary educational opportunities at Lake Superior State University. Established in 1972, the Michigan Charter Boat Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization of professional, United States Coast Guard licensed captains and their safety inspected vessels. The association and its membership have a flawless safety record over several decades guiding fishermen and women on sport fishing excursions on four Great Lakes surrounding the State of Michigan. “I am honored to present Lake Superior State University with a check to establish the Michigan Charter Boat Association Fisheries Scholarship Endowment,” said Captain Rich Haslett, Vice President of MCBA.” I have observed the outstanding work LSSU has done to protect the fisheries of our Great Lakes. LSSU has a superior education program that will help protect our Great Lakes fisheries for years to come. The Michigan Charter Boat Association is proud to support the research efforts at the Center for Freshwater Research and Education, and most importantly to the students as they pursue their education degree and their career opportunities in fisheries.”

The MCBA created an annual scholarship at LSSU in 2018 to provide financial assistance to a student majoring in the LSSU Fisheries and Wildlife Management program with a focus on fisheries. To date five students have benefitted from their annual scholarship support. With their most recent gift to create an endowment, a scholarship will be awarded into perpetuity. Successful candidates must be a full time student of at least junior status majoring in the Fisheries and Wildlife Management program, with a focus on fisheries who has earned a minimum 3.0 GPA. If there is no eligible candidate, a student majoring in a School of Natural Resources program with a focus on fisheries may be considered. “We are profoundly grateful to the Michigan Charter Boat Association for their generosity in establishing this endowment,” said Dr. Ashley Moerke, Dean for the College of Great Lakes Ecology and Education. “Their commitment to education and fisheries conservation aligns perfectly with our mission, and we are excited to be able to support more students that will leave a lasting legacy of positive change in the Great Lakes region.”

For more information on the Michigan Charter Boat Association Fisheries Scholarship or for information on establishing a scholarship to make an impactful difference to LSSU students in their chosen field of study, please contact the LSSU Advancement Office at 906-635-2665 or [email protected] .

  • 6 Undiscovered Small Towns in the Great Lakes Region

The Great Lakes region encompasses large swathes of several American states, including New York , Michigan , Wisconsin , Ohio , Minnesota , and Illinois , among a few others, and the Canadian province of Ontario (which shares a border with all of the Great Lakes except for Lake Michigan ). Comprising 5 of the world's largest freshwater lakes- Lake Ontario , Lake Erie , Lake Huron , Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior , this region is home to tens of millions of people across both countries. A number of major cities sit on the shores of these mammoth bodies of water, including Toronto , Chicago , Clevland , Buffalo , and Milwaukee , but today we would like to focus more on the smaller towns here that are worth a visit.

Elk Rapids, Michigan

Main street in the small American town of Elk Rapids in northern Michigan

Located along the shores of Grand Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan, Elk Rapids is a hidden gem that is almost completely surrounded by water. With Elk Lake to the east and the bay to the west, boating, fishing, and swimming are incredibly popular activities here in the warmer months.

If you are looking to explore more of the wildland around the small town, be sure to make a trip to Elk Rapids Day Park, where a sandy beach and picnic areas abound, or venture to the nearby chain of lakes, including Elk Lake, Lake Skegemog, and Torch Lake for kayaking or canoeing on waters that are often less choppy than that of Lake Michigan.

Learn more about Elk Rapids at the Guntzviller's Spirit of the Woods Museum, which features exhibits highlighting local wildlife and Native American history. The Elk Rapids Area Historical Museum is another spot, this time right in the heart of dowtown, that is also worth a visit.

Alexandria Bay, New York

The view of waterfront homes in Alexandria Bay surrounded by striking fall foliage along St Lawrence River

The Thousand Islands region on the St. Lawrence River sits at the far eastern edge of the Great Lakes region and is also the home of Alexandria Bay, a town of less than 1,000 residents.

This small town is renowned for its historic Boldt Castle, an iconic structure on Heart Island that was built by one of the area's wealthiest and most famous residents- the hotelier George Boltd. You can now tour the castle and its beautifully landscaped gardens. The Cornwall Brothers Store Museum in Alexandria Bay further explores the region's commercial history, featuring a number of artifacts and exhibits related to the area’s earliest settlers and industries.

Alexandria Bay's waterfront is also lined with a number of parks and viewpoints, like the aptly named Scenic View Park and Alexandria Bay Park Beach. Enjoy some of the local businesses near the waterfront too. Grab a coffee with a view at Coffee Pot Cathy's or grab a more substantial meal at Riley's by the River, among several other highly-rated eateries.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Cityscape view of Bayfield, Wisconsin, as seen from the shores of Lake Superior.

Bayfield sits on a spit of land that juts out into the mighty Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. This quiet escape is surrounded by some of the most iconic parklands and natural wonders in the United States and makes a great place to stay a night or two during your outdoor adventures. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the most notable of the nearby parks. Here, visitors can explore its lakeside caves, pristine beaches, and historic lighthouses by kayak, boat tour, or along its extensive trail system.

The town itself has much to offer too, containing many useful amenities such as hotels, restaurants, shops, and outfitters. The Bayfield Maritime Museum is the place to go for more insight into the area’s shipping and fishing heritage, while the nearby orchards and berry farms invite you to pick your own fresh fruit during the summer and fall.

It is highly recommended to embark on a relaxing stroll along Bayfield's scenic lakefront on the Brownstone Trail, which begins right in the heart of town. Also be sure to take a ferry to Madeline Island, which is ideally explored on a bike.

Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Main Street near Bell Street in downtown Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Chagrin Falls, located southeast of Cleveland, sits a little further from the lakeshore than many of the other entries on this list but still retains all of the beauty and charm of your typical Great Lakes region town. Known for the waterfall in the center of town, Chagrin Falls is renowned for its many natural features and parks in and around its borders.

The iconic Chagrin Falls Waterfall, as mentioned, is the centerpiece of the town, providing a scenic spot for photography without having to stray too far. The nearby Riverside Park is also perfect for a leisurely walk or a picnic by the Chagrin River. History enthusiasts will appreciate the preserved 19th-century architecture, many of which you can learn more about at the Chagrin Falls Historical Society & Museum.

Chagrin Falls also hosts a variety of annual events, including the Chagrin Falls Blossom Time Festival, which features parades, hot air balloons, and a carnival, making it s great place to bring the family every May.

Leland, Michigan

Leland, a quaint fishing community in Michigan.

Situated on the Leelanau Peninsula, Leland is truly a lakeside town, with Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Leelanau on the other. Best known for its historic Fishtown district, with its rustic fishing shanties, weathered docks, and charter boats, this living museum is where you can easily fill up a day exploring and learning about this unique place. Here, you can also shop for locally caught fish, and enjoy fresh seafood at waterside eateries like The Cove, a hugely popular restaurant.

Leland’s location between Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau makes it an ideal spot for water activities such as boating, fishing, and beachcombing, with several places to launch your watercraft. The town’s sveral nearby beaches beaches, including the secluded Van's Beach, are also perfect for a peaceful day by the water.

Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, where numerous vineyards offer tastings with views of rolling hills and the lake. Try out the Verterra Winery tasting room if you like to try some local products without having to venture outside of town.

Sackets Harbor, New York

Scenic view of the marina at Sackets Harbor in New York state, under a clear blue sky.

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor is a historic town in upstate New York that deserves more attention. Renowned for its preserved historic sites, including the Sackets Harbor Battlefield, where you can see the remains of forts from the War of 1812 and learn about the area's strategic significance through exhibits and exciting reenactments. The Sackets Harbor Historical Society Museum further highlights the town’s past with expertly curated displays of artifacts and local history.

The picturesque waterfront area features a marina, scenic parks, and walking paths where gorgeous views of Lake Ontario are easy to find. Just outside of Sackets Harbor are a number of wonderful state parks, including Westcott Beach State Park, which as you could imagine, contains a pristine beach that is good for swimming or simply lounging on a hot summer day.

Veliky Novgorod Region: Why you need to see the jewel in Russia’s ‘Silver Necklace’

Valday Iversky Monastery

Valday Iversky Monastery

For those of you making the trip to Veliky Novgorod Region, here is a list of unmissable activities and places of interest to really get you acquainted with the area and its history.

1.    Learn the history of the Russian state in Veliky Novgorod

Of course, this city is unmissable; being the historical center of Russian statehood with the most ancient cathedral in the country, Sophia Cathedral, erected more than one thousand years ago, is a place of power for the whole of Russia. The city was the first-ever Russian settlement straddling both sides of a river (Volkhov), with the imposing Kremlin on one side, and medieval churches and buildings in the historic market district on the other.

Veliky Novgorod Kremlin

Veliky Novgorod Kremlin

You can spice up the historical tour with various custom ones available, including the ancient cemetery at night or an alco-tour of the city (where you get to try local food and drink). For more information on the city excursions, you can go here .

2.  Explore traditional folk craft at the workshop in Kresttsy settlement

Krestetsky stitching is a traditional Russian pattern - a folk craft that was born and developed in this area since the 1860-s. In Soviet times a small factory producing original unique linen products was built here. During Perestroika it was nearly closed due to the catastrophic economic crisis in the country. The risk for the Krestetsky stitch being completely forgotten was quite real. It is now a private factory and shop with guided tours.

NOVGOROD REGION, RUSSIA - JANUARY 24, 2019: Linen products of the Kresttsy Stitch clothing factory reviving and implementing the Kresttsy stitchery, a traditional local embroidery technique dating from the 1860s, in the village of Kresttsy, Novgorod Region

The pattern is very beautiful and difficult to master, so the possibility to observe the birth of a masterpiece is quite unique. Head over to the factory website for more details.

3.  Meet the old believers in the village of Lyakova

Russia’s so-called ‘old believers’ did not accept the reformation of Orthodox Christianity in Russia in the 17th century, choosing instead to keep the old traditions in church services and rites, in defiance of the state’s persecution, lasting centuries. Old believers are divided into two groups, those who accept the church hierarchy and those who do not accept priests at all, pray in their own houses, and are governed by the community leaders. At this time there are about one million old believers scattered around the country with no official statistics to confirm that figure.

yacht charter lake michigan

The old believers of Lyakova village will gladly welcome you in the old traditional peasant’s house, explaining how it was organized, and how life, in general, looked in the distant peasant past.  This immersion is accompanied by a traditional dinner with borsch, salo (pork scratchings) and tea brewed in a traditional samovar. Book your ticket here .

4.  Take the eco-trail at the Valdai national park

This national park is one of the largest specially protected natural areas in the European part of Russia. Russian president Vladimir Putin has one of his ‘datchas’ here. The territory of the park that covers an area of 159 thousand hectares includes several lakes (Borovno, Valdai, Velje, Seliger) as well as rare animals and plants.

yacht charter lake michigan

Many nature lovers come here to hike, swim in the lakes and camp. This year the big eco-trail was opened. If you enjoy hiking, you can walk all 59 kilometers in five days, starting from the town of Valdai and covering around 12 kilometers a day. On the way, you will have all the facilities needed for camping and spending time in nature, from toilets to camping equipment and various amenities. Visit the park’s website for more info.

5.   Visit the Valday Iversky Monastery

Located on an island 10 kilometers from the town of Valday, this monastery appears to be floating on the lake, when you look at it from a distance.

yacht charter lake michigan

This is a male Orthodox monastery established in 1653. It was one of the three monasteries founded by the Patriarch Nikon (his reformation of the Orthodox Church in Russia and its unification with the Greek Orthodox church caused the split between ‘old’ and ‘new’ believers). The icon of the Mother of God – Iverskaya – is the treasure of the monastery and the reason for the active pilgrimage to this place.

6. Ring the bells at the Valday Museum of Bells

The region of Novgorod was the center of Russian statehood under the rule of the Rurikovich dynasty. After the collapse of Kievan Rus’, the region was an autonomous Russian state with a republican form of government, the symbol of which was a big Bell that every citizen could ring in order to gather the townspeople for a vote or resolve a community issue. So it is not by accident that the first-ever Museum of Bells in Russia was opened here.

Valday Museum of Bells

Valday Museum of Bells

If you manage to get Nadezhda Yakovleva for a guide, you are guaranteed a one-person performance along with your historical facts, it’s fascinating and great fun as well.

 7.   Immerse yourself in 10th-century life at the settlement in Lyubytino village

This village of ancient Slavs has been restored in order to give tourists the impression of life centuries ago. Different types of Russian wooden cottages (izba) are represented here, as well as utility buildings and the ancient burial mounds, used by Slavs for burial rites.

Lyubytino is an urban locality (a work settlement) and the administrative center of Lyubytinsky District of Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the Msta River. Municipally, it serves as the administrative center of Lyubytinskoye Urban Settlement

 8.   Visit the museum of local lore in the town of Borovichi

This is one of the oldest museums in the region, established in 1918, and located in a 19th century stone house with a mezzanine. It is devoted to the history of the region from the Stone Age to the Revolution of 1917.

By the end of the 19th century, Borovichi became an industrial city that attained fame in Europe due to the first international agricultural handicraft and industrial exhibition held here, which was established under the auspices of the Prince of Oldenburg, who underlined the importance of this region between the two Russian capitals. France then presented half of the items at the exhibition.

The region is also known for a unique material produced here: Franco-Russian pyro-granite plants of Prince Golitsyn were located in Borovichi, and the recipe for producing it remains secret to this day. This material got a large silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889.

We highly recommend that you take a guide here, as there are many activities including role play and various fun games, as well as just beautiful stories told during it. Find out more here .

If you need some guidance in the area, feel free to address the Rus Novgorodskaya touristic center.

There are still Michigan campsites available for the holiday weekend − but you’ve got to work for them.

Campsite reservations are going quickly so check midnrreservations.com for real time updates.

As of Wednesday, there were still some remote Upper Peninsula campsites available to pitch a tent. The DNR website also filters for available RV reservations.

Here’s some tent camping options MLive found ahead of Labor Day Weekend.

Baraga State Park

If you’re looking for a scenic camping experience you’ll want to snap this one up.

Baraga State Park overlooks the Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior. The campground has 95 grassy sites and a mini cabin. The camp spot available at a $27 nightly rate. Campers can expect an outdoorsy experience with wildlife sightings, fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming and boating available at this park.

The DNR describes it as “a great basecamp for those touring western Upper Peninsula destinations.”

The Bishop Baraga Shrine, the Sturgeon River Gorge, Mt. Arvon (Michigan’s highest point), Canyon Falls and other attractions associated with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community are nearby.

The park is one of just a few state parks that allow the operation of an ORV between the campground and nearby ORV trails. The park connects to Twin Lakes and Bewabic state parks and Bond Falls Scenic Site via several motorized routes.

The campground recently underwent improvements and added a new playground.

Truck campers and RVs are allowed here and electrical service, sanitation station and a public restroom are available. There are 13 sites with water and sewer hookups, each site has a description on the DNR reservation page.

Brimley State Park

There’s still a site available at one of the oldest state parks in the Upper Peninsula.

Brimley State Park is located along the shore of Lake Superior’s Whitefish Bay.

The campsite has 100 acres of lakeshore including a boat launch and sandy swimming beach.

From the sandy shoreline or observation area, visitors enjoy watching passing freighters and the view of Canada across the lake, according to the DNR.

The nearby bays and rivers are a destination for fishing, and a number of designated trout streams are located within a 30-minute drive of the park in the Hiawatha National Forest.

Truck campers and RVs are allowed here and electrical service is available. Check each individual site for water or sewer hookup. The nightly rate is $30.

Lake Gogebic State Park

The campground in Marenisco features about 30 lakefront campsites with the rest nestled among the trees, not more than 100 yards from the lake.

Lake Gogebic is the largest inland lake in the U.P. and is located within the Ottawa National Forest.

Truck campers and RVs are allowed here and electrical service is available. Check each individual site for water or sewer hookup.

The campsite is grassy, full shade and pet friendly. Nightly fees are in the $25 range.

Lime Island State Park

The 932-acre island is located in the St. Marys River at the eastern end of the U.P.

Tent camping is available on wooden platforms located 400 feet from the docks giving campers a river view. Additional platforms are located on the southeast side of the island and are accessible by water or a 2.25-mile hike from the harbor.

Non-platform camping and cottages are also available. Visitors must charter or navigate a boat more than 2 miles across the St. Marys River.

Vehicle parking is available inland at Raber. Use of a non-motorized boat to reach the island is not recommended, according to the DNR.

Nightly fees are $25.

Check the midnrreservations.com for partial bookings as more campsites may be available for shorter periods of time in the holiday window.

Campers can also use services like Kampgrounds of America, at koa.com , or Harvest Hosts, at harvesthosts.com , to find private campgrounds.
