The Royal Perth Yacht Club is celebrating 150 years of rich history on the city's Swan River this year.

The club as it stands today is a known institution, its memberships sought after and location common knowledge in Perth.

The sporting institution has grown from humble beginnings.

Heritage Perth's Richard Offen said the first recorded sailing race on Perth's Swan River was in 1841, when a small regatta was held to celebrate Foundation Day.

"It wasn't a roaring success," Mr Offen told 720 ABC's Lorraine Horsley.

Only a few sailors entered the race, with only one entrant in the large boats event.

"There weren't a lot of sailors in those days," Mr Offen said.

"Most people much preferred rowing as a river pastime."

The Royal Perth Yacht Club, originally known only as the Perth Yacht Club, was established in 1865 by a group of sailors who had faithfully organised yacht races every year on Foundation Day.

"It wasn't until 1873 that the committee began making plans to construct a boat house and some moorings," Mr Offen explained.

The club today is situated on Matilda Bay, near the suburb of Crawley.

The original clubhouse was on the Perth Esplanade at the end of William Street.

"In 1880, a jetty was built at the original location," Mr Offen said.

"The club had to take out an overdraft for 15 months as security to get it built.

"The clubhouse opened in 1889, which received very little mention in the press – or, for that matter, in the club's own minute book."

It would be another few decades before sailing reached significant popularity in Western Australia, and by the 1920s, the club was thriving.

"They began to formulate the idea of a move to a better location in 1938.

"But unfortunately, the war got in the way and it was put off several times.

"When finally in 1953, the decision was made to move to Matilda Bay, some of the members who lived in the city weren't that happy – probably because they couldn't come down to the club at lunch time for a quick drink."

Three decades later, yachtsman Alan Bond won the America's Cup on behalf of Australia, ending a 132-year winning streak by the USA.

His win put Western Australia on the map in the sailing world, and the Royal Perth Yacht Club were asked to host the America's Cup in Fremantle in 1987.

Bringing a large scale international event to the state sparked a number of developments by the state government including the Hillary's Boat Harbour, extensions to the railway line, and Challenger Harbour.

The State Library of WA will hold an exhibition showcasing the history of sailboats on the Swan River until May 3.

Meetings with a Difference

Royal Perth Yacht Club invites you to become a part of the experience which has allowed our Club to successfully achieve a goal that has been recognised as part of history – The Americas Cup.

  • An inspiration of achievement
  • The engine room of newly created pathways and creative visualisation
  • A reflection of what successful teamwork and forward planning can achieve

Being the proud winners of the prestigious event known as the America’s Cup in 1983, was due to intricate strategic planning and a great deal of teamwork. Discussing the plan and placing this train of thought into action was due to an ability to visualise success in an atmosphere that allowed for creative inspiration and the development of these ideas. The place where these principles were expanded and implemented is known as The Alan Bond Room.

For your convenience, Royal Perth Yacht Club has a wide range of facilities and audiovisual equipment available for your use and we look forward to working with you towards your next intensive planning session.

It is our goal to achieve the highest standard of service in an environment that encourages teamwork and forward-thinking whilst reflecting a sense of accomplishment and further development.

Access to the catering kitchen is via our larger function room, Kilburn Hall, and only one function room is ever hired out at a time on this level of the building. Take Advantage Of One Of Perth's Best Local Venues

Full venue hire – make mounts bay sailing club your own.

At Mounts Bay Sailing Club, we pride ourselves in delivering one of the most stand-out and private events venues in Perth. To achieve this goal, we hire our venue spaces out by level, ensuring that guests are not disturbed by other functions.

However, some clients prefer to exclusively hire the whole venue instead, which gives them free reign over the entire property and facilities. It also provides the peace of mind that only their guests will be at the venue on the day of the event.

This option often works very well for large Corporate Fun Days and Christmas parties where more than one space is needed for different components of the event. Opting to hire the entire venue provides you with maximum flexibility, enabling you to use each space according to your requirements. The only downside is that your guests may never want to leave!

Party & Events Catering At Mounts Bay

As we have no dedicated on-site caterer, Mounts Bay Sailing Club allows you the freedom to select your own catering supplier for your event. Function room hire includes the use of our catering kitchens, making the process easy and convenient for your choice of provider.

We regularly work with some of the best catering companies in Perth so we are more than happy to recommend these to you if you are unsure of where to start. We also have experience and understanding of the type of catering that suits each of our venue spaces, so we can offer advice and guidance if required. We would recommend a site visit is organised for caterers that have not been to the venue before.

Please speak with our Event Manger for catering advice or to obtain a list of local and reputable catering companies who are familiar with the venue.

Beverage Packages at Mounts Bay Sailing Club

When making your beverage choices for your function we have two formats for you to choose from. You can either choose a beverage package or create your own custom selection against your minimum spend or bar tab. We are more than happy to discuss drink options with you and will endeavour to get your preference of drinks in for your event.

We are also happy for you to bring your own wine or champagne in for a $15 corkage fee on each bottled opened at the event if you have that special drink you absolutely love!

A cocktail bar can even be set up for your event if you fancy doing something a little special for your guests. We have a wide range of experience when it comes to your mixology wishes and are happy to meet your cocktail needs!

Our staff are well trained, have their RSA certification and offer an exceptional level of customer service for each and every event. Your function will be assigned the appropriate number of staff for your total guest number as well as an Approved Bar Manager to oversee the bar operation on the night.

In addition, whilst we are happy to offer tray service for up to an hour per event, we are unable to offer table beverage service.

To find out more about our drinks packages for on-site events, see our event-specific brochures!

To book your function or make an enquiry, please contact our events manager.

, the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia.

The park is located by the opposite the University of Western Australia and is a popular recreation spot close to the city of .

Prior to European settlement it was an area of significance to the Aborigines due to the presence of hot water springs, water holes and abundant fish life in the river.

Originally taken up as part of a land grant to Capt. Currie in 1829, ownership passed to Henry Sutherland in 1837. Sutherland built a 2 storey house that was to eventually be incorporated into the university. In 1875 ownership passed to George Shenton and in 1910 the state government resumed the land for public recreation and the foreshore area became a camp ground.

A tramway once ran from the city along the river to Nedlands Baths.

In 1914 much of the original land grant was incorporated into the university and the original house became quarters for the School of Engineering. Later it housed the University Chaplain.

From the 1920s to the 1940s the site changed dramatically due to dredging and landfill works. During WWII the reserve was used for military purposes and two bases for catalina flying boats were established in the Crawley area.

Today the reserve houses yacht and rowing clubs plus a restaurant and kiosk. Perth Dinghy Sailing Club was originally established near Barrack Street Jetty in 1903 and moved to Matilda Bay in 1960. Royal Perth Yacht Club, also originally located near Barrack Street, moved to Matilda Bay in 1953. A third sailing club to use the area (Mounts Bay Sailing Club) was established in 1897.

Other groups to use the area included 2 rowing clubs and a Sea Scouts group.

The two swimming jetties at Crawley Bay will be very familiar to those people who have used the area as will the brown spotted and clear jellyfish that inhabit the waters of the bay. Few, however, will remember the Crawley Baths that date from 1910.

Owned by Chuck Bond. I'd definitely say its one of the best places to live in Moscow. It's just off campus, affordably priced, and 'round the clock maintenance and speedy response to any issues. Extremely well maintained. Laundry facility on site and great neighbors! Nothing better than living in the Yacht Club for 3.5 years!! Chuck's amazing!

Smoke on the water, the fire in the sky.

Yachts go up in smoke. Could be sabotage or could be insurance fraud or could be another careless smoker.

Sucks when you can’t even get a moped through with a six-pack of water.

The whole road is about 15 km and you can take dozens of similar photos on it. Thanks to the successful operation of drones, Russians are sitting in tree lines and  forests with a minimum of ammunition, food and water. There were cases when we destroyed a moped with which Russians tried to bring a pack of 6 bottles of water to the position.”
