‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

Schaben / Los Angeles Times) Sunday's full moon will be the first "super moon" of 2022, with three more set to occur this year. During the so-called "super moon," the moon appears larger and brighter in the sky than it does at other times. Each month's full moon has its own unique name, and in the month of May, the "flower moon" takes to the skies over Earth. According to Live Science, the sun's light rays are able to get around the Earth during an eclipse, but as they do so, they first go through the planet's atmosphere, scattering shorter-wavelength blue light from reaching the moon's surface. As a result, the moon appears red during a lunar eclipse.

California Yacht Club Says New Clubhouse Will Take Several Years to Build, Activities Continue After Devastating Fire

A Temporary Pavilion Will Soon Serve in the Interim

By Zach Armstrong

The California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey lost nearly everything in December. One night, its two-story clubhouse was consumed by a seaside fire that incinerated an impressive collection of historical artifacts, boating trophies and other memorabilia. But the nautical community’s resilience proved itself. Various events and programs, including pickleball and a recent Super Bowl watch party, have continued on the club’s six-acre property while its members’ yachts still sit in the adjacent docks.

By June, Senior Vice President John Myers says the club hopes to give members a closer sense of normalcy with an elevated pavilion-style facility featuring a full-bar, restaurant, bathrooms and event space. This structure will serve in the interim while the club works out development plans for a new official clubhouse. Nothing short of a cumbersome process is anticipated. Once insurance provides an estimate on losses, the club can determine a design strategy while working with L.A. County and the California Coastal Commission for approvals.

An approximate timeline is hard to determine, said Myers, but will likely take several years.

The old clubhouse held a decades’ worth display of cherished relics that showed the club’s rich history. Notable items that perished in the December fire include the King of Spain Trophy which was acquired from King Alfonso XIII in 1929 and photographs of past club leaders. An internal team is salvaging items that survived the blaze, such as the California Cup, which will likely appear in the new HQ.

Fellow yacht clubs have shown strong comradery, said Myers. Many of them offered support to CYC after the winter fire; possibly leading to donations of memorabilia once official development plans for a new clubhouse are in motion. Having a membership of international travelers also proved to be a useful perk. As they travel to other clubs, they can use their connections to ask for gifts. Myers also said the club is open to starting “new traditions.”

While CYC lost some of its members, Myers says its community largely hasn’t gone anywhere and remains excited for future events. An upcoming Easter brunch, women’s paddle tennis and yoga are just some of what CYC members will be enjoying. Sailboat racing has also reconvened with the Sunset Series starting April 17 and running through Sept. 4.

Fire guts historic California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey

Firefighters worked overnight Monday to extinguish a blaze that erupted at a historic yacht club in Marina del Rey.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. Monday for a structure fire at the California Yacht Club in the 4400 block of Admiralty Way, said Fred Fielding, a Fire Department spokesperson.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire engulfing the two-story building, fire officials said.

California Yacht Club Destroyed in Fire

california yacht club fire news

MARINA DEL REY— A huge fire destroyed the California Yacht Club, located in Marina del Rey, on Dec. 11.

Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. that night and arrived to find a massive two-story fire.

Videos from news outlets show bright red flames traveling over the roof of the club and producing large black clouds of smoke.

Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries and were hospitalized before the blaze was extinguished just before 1:30 a.m. Dec. 12. The cause of their injuries has not been released.

Among the most prominent California clubs, the California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and has a long history of promoting yachting and maritime activities. It has frequently hosted national and international regattas, with recent events including the J/70 World Championship, U.S. Junior Women’s Championship, Martin 242 North American Championship and CFJ National Championship.

The club was started in Los Angeles harbor by a group of loyal yachtsmen – most from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the rest active in other early yacht clubs of that day. In 1941, America went to war, and the Coast Guard took over CYC’s facilities in Wilmington. Members continued to fly the Club Burgee, but after World War II, the facilities were so run down that CYC never could return to its birthplace.

Former owner Steve Hathaway noted that his father helped build the club in the 1960s. “It’s been a home for so many people,” said Hathaway in a statement. “We are so heartbroken right now… It tears me apart to see… It’s just terrible.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

We lost the clubhouse, not the club

Published on December 19th, 2023 by Editor -->

Following the massive structure fire endured by the prominent California Yacht Club in Los Angeles on December 11, the membership and yachting community is asking what’s next. Here’s an update:

California Yacht Club’s Town Hall meeting on December 17 opened with remarks centered on sympathy and resilience, shared with the more than 200 members in attendance at the Marina del Rey Hotel and many others joining online. Though this meeting took place just six days after a fire that demolished much of CYC’s clubhouse, co-owner Jeff Weiss summed it up quite succinctly when he shared, “It’s been a week, to say the least.”

From there, the pivot toward highlighting the strength of the community and commitment to scheduled Club programing came quickly. Commodore Christina Tarantola was direct – “It may not look exactly like it used to, but we are going to sally forth and have a good time.”

A key part of this optimism is that facilities, other than the clubhouse, are relatively unscathed, meaning regatta, junior programs, paddle tennis and pickleball, and many other operations can continue as planned for 2024.

After these opening remarks, SVP of Operations John Myers gave what details the Club has for where their focus will be going forward, with these three key areas topping their long to-do lists: (1) safety, (2) the member experience, and (3) the next 100 years at the Club. Co-owner Colin Shepherd reminded attendees, “We’ve lost the clubhouse, but we haven’t lost the Club,” and that a focus on moving forward together is a top priority.

There are many details that have yet to be confirmed regarding the last week or so at the Club, but Myers was able to share that the fire was likely electrical, and they are still awaiting the results of the fire department investigation. These are still early days in the recovery process, and though some of the next steps are going to take time to complete, he was clear in saying, “I want to assure you 100% – we will rebuild.”

This meeting had originally been scheduled to discuss the upcoming lease renewal and related enhancement projects, though we expect to see significant changes to those efforts given the fire on December 11. Weiss and Shepherd reaffirmed their commitment to getting a significant lease extension in place and discussed their ongoing efforts with LA County staff to begin that process.

The fire has certainly complicated what the path forward looks like today, but it may ultimately be an opportunity to accelerate the lease renewal as well as deliver upgrades to the Club and its membership.

Vice Commodore Sue Service addressed the gathered members with a proverb – “‘From the hottest fire comes the strongest steel’ and I’m not talking about the building right now.”

Though there are certainly challenges ahead for the Club, each speaker at the Town Hall also highlighted the incredible support received from members, other yacht clubs, and members of the community. To paraphrase Shepherd, we will rebuild, and we will do it arm-in-arm with the yachting community.

yacht club fire

Two firefighters were hospitalized Tuesday while battling an intense blaze that ripped through the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey.

Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters responded around 11:30 p.m. Monday to 4469 Admiralty Way where they found the club in flames, according to the fire department.

The firefighters were taken to a hospital in moderate condition, Fox 11 reported.

The fire department’s Arson Investigation Unit was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire, according to Fox 11.

The yacht club was founded in 1922 in Wilmington Harbor near San Pedro and the current facility in Marina del Rey was built in 1967, according to the club’s website.

Fan-owned soccer club orange county sc raises over $300k in uk investment drive.

Bryce Jamison of Orange County SC celebrates a goal scored vs. Memphis 901 in the USL Championship, ... [+] July 2024.

The Irvine, California-based fan-owned soccer club, Orange County SC, has raised around £250,000 ($330,000) following a recent fundraising initiative in the United Kingdom.

Almost 1,500 UK-based fans have registered to become owners, building on the club’s existing group of fan-owners and investors in the United States.

The success of the recent U.K. ownership drive means the club is now likely to run another United States-based ownership campaign where it hopes to build on the existing $600,000 worth of investment there.

Perks for the U.K. investors have included things ranging from having their name on an owner’s wall at the Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, to meetings with club presidents and video messages from players at the higher levels of investment.

Orange County SC owners night, 2024

This kind of soccer club ownership offers a way for fans to invest—either through intrigue alone as part of an interest in the sport, or for financial reasons—in the growing, increasingly stable, (or at least less unstable) but still quirky business of American soccer.

Hackers Force Chrome Users To Hand Over Google Passwords. Here’s How

Apple’s update decision—bad news confirmed for millions of iphone users, today’s eclipse of the full moon sets up a ‘ring of fire’ — what to know.

U.K. investors will see plenty of differences in how the game operates in the United States in comparison to the setup of the soccer pyramid in the United Kingdom.

Soccer has been played in the U.S. for as long as it has in most countries around the world since the laws of association football dispersed from the U.K. in the late 19th century, but it has developed at a different pace and in a unique manner.

In the 21st century, the sport in the U.S. finally appears to have found a more secure and stable footing at the professional level in both the women’s and the men’s game. Fan ownership models like this could potentially offer further security.

Orange County SC is part of a burgeoning second-tier league, the USL Championship, but unlike in the English football pyramid, there is no promotion or relegation.

The USL is, however, trying to build a model of soccer in America that aligns, at least in some ways, with the rest of the world.

Promotion and relegation between USL leagues has been mooted, and the franchises are given more freedom to create their own individual culture and identity.

Orange County is a team that has crafted such an identity and a way of working, with the ownership model part of that.

On the sporting side, it has aimed to become a club where burgeoning star players can develop their skills. On the back of success in this area, its methods of recruitment and development have been adopted by the league as a whole.

The former president of soccer at Orange County, Oliver Wyss, became the director of football across the USL , helping other clubs identify up-and-coming talent or add quality and depth to their rosters.

One recent example of this is Charleston Battery forward and USL Championship top scorer, Nick Markanich , who developed into one of the league's star players at the South Carolina club and will join Spanish second-division side CD Castellón at the end of the current USL season.

Orange County SC president of business relations, Dan Rutstein, has U.K. roots and is familiar with fan ownership models.

Rutstein himself is a fan-owner of AFC Wimbledon via the democratic supporters’ organisation, the Dons Trust, which facilitates supporter-ownership of the London club.

“We are an international-facing club and our story is one of giving players a pathway, a chance to succeed in Europe,” Rutstein recently told U.K. digital newspaper, the Independent .

“We want to show Brits there’s a real team doing things a normal way — [US soccer] is not all about [Lionel] Messi and hype .”

There is plenty of cross-Atlantic interest in football clubs at all levels of the game, with the likes of Wrexham in Wales and Birmingham City in England recently attracting attention via their high-profile American owners Ryan Reynolds and Tom Brady respectively.

Fan-ownership is another element of the game that is attracting interest in the sport, as it offers a direct connection between a club and its fans. Orange County SC continues to pave a way for such a model in soccer in America.
