Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is a safe, pristine, clean and family-friendly and small sandy beach in Cape Coral. It has friendly locals, easy access, and good 3G+ coverage. It's around 0.44km in length, and there are no shades. It is never crowded here. Be aware that drinking alcohol, smoking, and practicing activities is not allowed. This beach is also known as Yacht Club Public Beach.

Safety and Access

You can only go to this beach by car. It's easy to get there, which makes it perfect for families! There are no lifeguards on duty at the beach, so keep that in mind, but if you’re looking for somewhere quiet to hang out, Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is a good place. Dogs allowed all year round.

Infrastructure

There are no outside shower, umbrella for rent, and chairs for rent.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to relax or want to find a beach with plenty of activities and family-friendly amenities, I’ve got you covered.

It’s worth noting that the city of Cape Coral only has two beaches within the actual city limits.

Because of its prime location in Southwest Florida, however, there are plenty of beaches near Cape Coral that are featured in our list.

Despite there being dozens of beautiful beaches around Cape Coral, Florida, there are only two public beaches located directly in Cape Coral itself: Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach and Four Freedoms Beach.

Let’s take a look at these Cape Coral beaches, as well as the best beaches near Cape Coral (that are only a short drive away), so you can start your planning!

1. Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach

The main Cape Coral beach, Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach, is located within the Yacht Club Community Park on the southeast corner of Cape Coral.

This is the best public beach in Cape Coral, Florida, and is perfect for those who want to enjoy brilliant views of the Gulf of Mexico with plenty of amenities.

Visitors can enjoy activities like sunbathing and swimming, fishing, picnicking, or just walking along the gigantic pier located here.

The beach is also a great spot for launching your kayak or paddleboard; plus, a public boat ramp is available here.

Young children will especially enjoy the adjoining Yacht Club Community Park, where there is a playground and splash pad available.

There is also the Yacht Club Community Pool available 7 days a week, but either a membership or guest pass with a daily fee will need to be purchased first.

Of all the Cape Coral, Florida beaches, this option has the most central location and well-rounded activities. 

Additional planning tip: It’s worth noting that the Yacht Club Beach has a parking rate of $5 per hour.

2. Four Freedoms Beach

The second of Cape Coral, Florida beaches is located at Four Freedoms Park .

Located just south of Cape Coral Pkwy, you’ll find this beach on the banks of Bimini Basin.

It is important to note that Four Freedoms Beach is a “sunbathing beach” only, meaning that it is used for sunbathing and dipping your toes in, but actual swimming is not allowed.

Amenities here include a large grassy play area, a shaded, fenced-in playground, picnic tables, and restrooms.

Due to the lack of a swimming area, Four Freedoms Beach is most frequented by families with small children looking for fun and relaxation, as well as the use of its playground.

It’s a wonderful beach for relaxation on your Cape Coral vacation; spread out and enjoy the gorgeous Florida weather!

3. Gulfside City Park Beach

If you are looking for a beach with plenty of activities and amenities, Gulfside City Park Beach is the perfect spot for you.

This beach has it all, from volleyball courts and picnic pavilions to a playground and fishing pier.

Located on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, you’ll enjoy clear shallow water and a lovely stretch filled with white sand beaches.

Locally known as Algiers Beach, this Sanibel Island hot spot offers another fun activity – shell hunting!

In fact, this is one of the best beaches for shell hunting in the entire United States, nicknamed the “shelling capital of the world.”

4. Bowditch Point Regional Park Beach

Another fantastic beach near Cape Coral, Florida, is Bowditch Point Regional Park Beach .

Located at the northernmost tip of Estero Island in Fort Myers Beach, FL, this beach offers a picturesque view of nearby Sanibel Island.

Visitors can enjoy plenty of activities here, including swimming, sunbathing, fishing, and kayaking.

It’s also the perfect place to pack a picnic and see what wildlife you can spot! In addition, bird-watchers will enjoy the nature trails where they can spot some of Florida’s most varied bird species.

There is also a nature center on site where you can learn about the local ecosystem and wildlife.

And don’t forget to take a walk down the pier!

This beach does have a $2 per hour parking fee, but it is well worth it for all that it has to offer.

5. Fort Myers Beach

This seven-mile stretch of white sand beach is located on Estero Island and offers plenty of activities for visitors, including swimming, biking, and shelling, just to name a few.

You can also enjoy a variety of water sports here, such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and parasailing. 

There are plenty of restaurants and bars located near the beach, so you can grab a bite or a drink without having to go far.

Popular options include the Smokin’ Oyster Brewery, where, as the name suggests, you can enjoy oysters and beer, along with many other delicious offerings.

If you are looking for a relaxing way to end your epic day at this beach, check out one of the on-site tiki beach bars where you can take in the sunset with a beverage of choice.

6. Bonita Beach Park

A public beach located in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Located in Bonita Springs, Florida (22 miles from Cape Coral), Bonita Beach Park is one of the prettiest public beaches in the area.

Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and kayaking. Amenities include showers, restrooms, a playground, sand volleyball courts, and picnic areas.

And if you’re visiting with Fido – you’re in luck! There is a separate Bonita Dog Beach Park . Dogs are welcome to run free, splash in the water, and take part in all of your beach day fun.

There are also fishing opportunities at Bonita Beach Park, but non-residents will need to obtain a saltwater fishing license from the state.

Once you catch your fish, you can take advantage of the on-site charcoal BBQ grills to cook up a quick feast.

Whether you are looking to relax or play, Bonita Beach Park has something for everyone!

7. Barefoot Beach

Located on the Gulf of Mexico in Bonita Springs, this beach allows visitors to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, fishing, picnicking, and kayaking.

There is also a nature center and a 1-mile walking trail on site where you can learn about the local ecosystem and wildlife.

With public restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and concession areas, this natural beach is a great place to enjoy an easy and fun day for everyone.

8. Lover’s Key State Park & Beach

Lover’s Key State Park is a 712-acre state park and wildlife habitat located on Lover’s Key barrier island that protects some of the most pristine barrier islands in Southwest Florida.

Lovers Key has a gorgeous two-mile stretch of sandy beach, which was featured on the Travel Channel as one of the Top 10 Florida beaches.

It’s a good place for swimming, collecting shells, and enjoying a picnic. 

There are also several walking and biking trails that wind through the island, making it a great spot for nature lovers.

Showers, restrooms, and picnic areas are available, as well as access to Lovers Key State Park Welcome & Discovery Center.

The admission fee varies between $2 and $8 depending on the number of occupants and mode of transport.

9. Cayo Costa State Park

Cayo Costa State Park is located on Cayo Costa Island, 12 miles from Cape Coral, Florida.

The Cayo Costa State Park is an untouched paradise, home to stunning beaches, dunes, wind-shaped trees, and over 2,400 acres to explore!

The only way to travel to Cayo Costa Island is by private boat or ferry. You can take a Cayo Costa Ferry from Pine Island, Punta Gorda, or the Captiva/Sanibel Islands.

Alternatively, you can enter by private charter or kayak for experienced paddlers!

Once you’re there, pop $2 into their honor box for your usage fee. 

Then, stretch out on 9 miles of shoreline!

This beach is excellent for swimming, shelling, snorkeling, and fishing. There are also great opportunities for wildlife spotting, with numerous shorebirds and off-shore manatees, sea turtles, and dolphins.

A paddleboard is a great way to experience the area, paddling through the clear emerald waters and keeping an eye out for wildlife. 

For an up-close-and-personal view of marine life, scuba diving is also available within the park.

• Bathrooms are available within the park, including accessible options. 
• Pets are welcome within the park but should remain leashed and cannot visit the beach. 
• Boats are welcome from 8:00 am – sundown. 

10. Captiva Island

Located 28 miles from Cape Coral, Florida, you’ll find Captiva Island. 

Captiva Island is home to 3 public white-sandy beaches available to anyone staying on the island or visiting for the day.

Beaches here include:

• Alison Hagerup Beach Park 
• Andy Rosse Lane Park (most popular)
• Turner Beach

Captiva Island is one of the most popular spots for a beach day in the Cape Coral area as it’s a hot spot for swimming, tanning, and people-watching.

If you’re looking for watersports, there are also kayak and paddleboard rentals available.

Additionally, you can take a kayak tour or even floating yoga classes!

Another one of the best things about this area is that if you get hungry and need a break from the sun, there are plenty of food options ranging from casual to fine dining.

10. North Captiva Island

Transportation to North Captiva Island is accessible via the North Captiva Water Taxi or other methods of boating.

Located just north of Captiva Island, this island is only accessible by boat or private aircraft, which makes it feel even more remote and special.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll feel like you’re in paradise.

With its crystal clear water and white sand beaches, it’s easy to see why this spot is worth the extra effort to visit!

Enjoy a long walk down the five miles of coastline, or, if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, there are also parasailing and jet skiing rentals available.

What to Bring to The Beach

Before you jet off to the beach, make sure you’re prepared.

While you can certainly travel light with just a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a towel, as an avid beach-goer, there are a lot more items I would recommend considering having on hand.

A Note About Cape Coral, Florida

Cape Coral, Florida is a city in Southwest Florida and is known as a ‘neighborhood’ of the larger Fort Myers, Florida.

Other ‘neighborhoods’ of Fort Myers include:

• Sanibel Island
• Bonita Springs
• Boca Grande
• Pine Island
• Alva, Buckingham, and Lehigh Acres

( I mention this because the beaches here are often referred to interchangeably, which you will learn more about below ).

Cape Coral is located on a large peninsula that is bordered in the south and east by the Caloosahatchee River and in the west by Matlacha Pass. 

In other words, Cape Coral itself is not located on the actual ocean.

Instead, it is known for its 400 miles of saltwater and freshwater canals and is often referred to as a “Waterfront Wonderland” because it has more miles of canals than anywhere else in the world.

When to Visit Cape Coral

Though Cape Coral, FL is a great place to be enjoyed year-round, the best time to visit Cape Coral is during the months of March to May.

From early March to late May, daytime temperatures range in the high 70s-80s (perfect beach weather!), and this is also the season when you’ll enjoy moderate crowds and fair prices.

Another popular time to visit Cape Coral is during the winter months of December to February.

During the winter months, you can expect clear skies and average temps in the mid-70s (perfect for outdoor activities).

It is during the winter months that you’ll experience peak crowds and price hikes, however.

For those looking to get away during the summer months, Cape Coral offers the same great atmosphere but with high humidity and temperatures in the high 80s and 90s.

In order to make these months more tolerable, it is important to understand how to stay cool in the Florida heat , as it is quite intense.

Additional planning tip: Be mindful that Florida’s hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak of the season being the first week of September.

Thank you for this great list! We visited a few of these beaches last year, but we are headed back to Cape Coral next month. We are excited to explore some other beaches on this list! My favorite beach last year was Bowman’s Beach Park on Sanibel. It felt like a hidden gem and is absolutely beautiful!

The Cape Coral Yacht Club beach will re-open next Friday.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have provided the city of Cape Coral with the regulatory permits required to reopen the Yacht Club Beach on Nov. 10, the city announced Tuesday.

Yacht Club beach reopening may be near

The city of Cape Coral has received the OK to move forward with the beach nourishment at the Yacht Club.

Capital Improvements director Paul Clinghan said they are waiting on the Army Corps and DEP permits for the marine side of the park.

The Army Corps approved the addition of sand to the beach on Tuesday and the anticipates re-opening the Beach on Nov. 10.

“We did get approval for putting sand on the land side,” Clinghan said.

The hope is the demolition of the park’s structures will go out to bid in the next couple of weeks.

Kimley-Horn will present the Yacht Club master plan, with some concepts from the last retreat, on Nov. 8, he said.

City manager Michael Ilczyszyn said a recent development at the Yacht Club Is that is now encompasse land. The corner next to the pier where the jagged edge goes to the Boat House and then into a semi-circle has natural soil growing every year to fill in the keyway.

“Four months ago, an Army Corps reviewer stopped the project and said they saw on the TV that the Boat House was opening and creating soil and beach into the river,” Ilczyszyn said. “We had to get our surveyor involved.”

He said over the last two decades that area has been naturally growing.

“We now have a new line and more rounded and adjusted to the mean highwater land,” Ilczyszyn said, adding that they have gained land.

Because a reviewer at the federal level raised concern it halted the entire review of the rest of the project and as a result, the city got more land, he explained.

Clinghan said Kimley-Horn has scuba divers inspecting the pier piles this week and engineers are inspecting above the water. He said there will be a determination of the condition and what can be salvaged.

Mayor John Gunter said if the pier is in good condition, and if they can utilize the structure, he would like to see that happen. He said if there are any modifications needed, they can go back and apply for those later.

“May not be exactly what we want now. Let’s at least get a pier back there,” Gunter said.

Ilczyszyn said they are in appropriations asking the state to assist them with the redecking of the pier.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the US Army Corps of Engineers have provided the City of Cape Coral with the regulatory permits required to reopen the Yacht Club Beach on Nov. 10. In advance of the opening on Thursday, Nov. 9, Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter, District 1 Councilmember Bill Steinke, and City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn will discuss the reopening of the Yacht Club Community Park Beach area with the media, followed by a brief Q&A. 

• The existing bathrooms and two pavilions have been completely removed from the beach.
• Public Works and Parks has completed the Landside cleanup and raking of the beach using mechanical means.
• Public Works and Parks has completed the Waterside cleanup using manual means and dive teams. 
• The Florida DEP Emergency Field Authorization was approved for sand renourishment of the City beach property (Landside).
• The Federal permitting through the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is pending (Landside). (Critical path for the schedule)  
• Parks will purchase and apply sand to the beach per the permits within one month of receiving the Landside permit.
• Parks has a contract with a company that rents/leases temporary restrooms, which includes cleaning and maintenance. The restroom will be delivered and connected in the same time frame as the sand renourishment.
• Parks, Public Works, and Risk are coordinating the installation of signage for public use of the beach when it opens.
• After completion of Tasks #5, #6, #7, and #8, the temporary perimeter fence at the beach will be removed, and the beach can open.  
• The FLDEP permitting and USACE permitting for the Waterside sand renourishment is ongoing. The beach can open without the Waterside sand renourishment.

The public boat ramp remains closed to the community. FDEM and FWC are using the boat ramp for derelict vessel removal. Lee County is using the boat ramp to repair waterway navigation aids. These agencies will use the public boat ramp through Aug. 31, 2023. 

The Yacht Club Beach remains closed as the city prepares the beach for opening, which requires raking the landside beach, raking the waterside beach, and refurbishing the beach with new sand. State and/or Federal Permits are required to perform the beach work. The existing restrooms, two pavilions, and the playground will be removed. The city plans to have portable toilets on site for the beach opening, which is anticipated for Aug. 31, 2023, pending approval of the permits for beach cleanup and all other tasks are completed.

The Marina and all other Yacht Club Community Park amenities are closed. If Council approves it at the June 14 Council Meeting, the city plans to proceed with plans to deconstruct the Yacht Club Ball Room building while saving elements for reuse in the new facilities. The deconstruction work is anticipated to start in October.

Cape Coral city leaders revealed what they are calling "the final master plan for the Cape Coral Yacht Club" at Wednesday's Committee of the Whole meeting.

The Yacht Club has sat fenced up ever since Hurricane Ian destroyed the ballroom and pier.

According to the plan, the new Yacht club will have an expanded beach, new restaurant, a resort-style pool with lanes and more. For the link to the whole plan, click here .

To keep up with our ever-growing city, there will also be nearly 900 parking spaces. That includes 158 for boats and 596 for cars. To fit that much parking, they need to build a 4-story parking garage in place of the pickleball and tennis courts.

Ron Austin from the Southwest Florida Yacht Club also spoke at Wednesday's city council meeting. He is asking the city if the new community center could be his club's new permanent home.

"We have 400 miles of canals in Cape Coral. We have a lot of boats. Thousands of boats. And without that would be a great thing for the citizens to have a yacht club to be in." Austin said.

Council members said they understand the public's frustration with how long this is taking. They are frustrated too, but they need to get a lot of state and federal permits approved to take on a project this size.

NBC2 asked the city how long this would all take. They sent the following response:

"The Yacht Club Master Plan will come before the council for approval at a future meeting. A timeline for this will be developed in the next few weeks.

Once the council receives and approves the final design and associated fees, the project will move into the design phase.

We anticipate completion within 3-4 years, but this is contingent on federal and state permits."

Best Cape Coral Beaches and  Best Beaches Near Cape Coral Florida

Cape Coral Beaches - so much fun fun fun in the sun at some of the best Southwest Florida beaches!

I'm dying to tell you about all of our favorite beaches in Cape Coral and nearby.

We have everything from small family beaches to out-of-the-way island retreats to party time beaches, either on the Gulf of Mexico or the Caloosahatchee River.

Some of the nicest beaches in the world are in SW Florida. Do you love stretches of white sand, with palm trees and pretty blue-green water?  How about gentle waves and lots of beautiful shells?!

Well, you won't have a problem because there are several beaches to choose from. To start with, Cape Coral has Yacht Club Beach and Four Freedoms Park Beach .......... and within 45 minutes are Ft Myers Beach, Lovers Key, Sanibel, and Bonita Springs.  Just a bit further away, about an hour's drive, are Naples, Captiva, and North Captiva.

The Cape does not have gulf beaches because we are surrounded by the waters of the Caloosahatchee River and Matlacha Pass.

These estuary waters are protected, our coastline is part of a preserve of mangrove forests that teem with aquatic life, and that's what gives us such great fishing in our area!

Cape Coral Beaches

Yacht club beach - yacht club community park.

Yacht Club Beach in Cape Coral, is on the Caloosahatchee River and it is a nice little family beach with a playground, fishing pier, and tikis for picnics.

A ballroom is available for parties and the monthly Sunset Celebration craft shows.

The beach's restaurant, The Boathouse, has good food and sometimes features live music.

Also part of The Yacht Club complex are a pool, tennis and racquet ball courts, and a marina. Parking is free.

From Cape Coral Pkwy, go south on Coronado Pkwy, it turns into Driftwood Pkwy, take it to the end.

Four Freedoms Park Beach

Four Freedoms Park is the location of Cape Coral's newest beach.

The white-sand sunbathe only beach fronts Bimini Basin and is right off of Cape Coral Pkwy.

You will also find a playground, picnic shelters, grassy play area and recreation center.

Fort Myers Beaches are a totally different scene from Cape Coral.

Shops, restaurants, playground, crowds, and lots of activity are at the beach right off the bridge.

Hang a right when you get off the bridge and go all the way to the end to go to Bowditch Point for a less crowded beach.

Paying for parking is easy with self-service machines.

Or go the other way and get to the beach from access points all along Estero Blvd.

Lovers Key State Park

If you keep heading south on Estero Blvd, you will come to Lovers Key State Park Beach.

There are 2 beaches, the first has walking trails and the second one, a little further south, has a tram that you take to the water.

Public restrooms are available at both ends of the trolley.

Pay $8 for parking at the entrance.

What I like about these beaches is that they are in a more natural state, are less crowded, and have lots of shells for collecting.

Lovers Key Adventures offers bike, canoe and kayak rentals.

Sanibel Island

I love to go to any of the Sanibel Beaches!

Blue green water, white sand and lots of shells, big sky, and gulf breezes ... what can be better?

Quaint shopping areas, beautiful homes, and sandy lanes make Sanibel Island so attractive.

The five public beaches are Lighthouse, Gulf Side, Tarpon Bay, Bowmans, and Turners Beaches, all on the gulf side from one end to the other.

Turners Beach is just before you head over the bridge onto Captiva and you can park on the Captiva side.

Parking for Sanibel and Captiva beaches are paid with self-service machines.

Captiva Island and North Captiva Beach

Just on the other side of the bridge from Sanibel are the Captiva Beaches, starting with the Captiva side of Turner Beach.

Restrooms are available, parking is limited, and stores are nearby.

We also like to go to Captiva Beach, just beyond the village, it's one of my most favorite beaches.

The village is so cute, with terrific restaurants and little shops.

North Captiva Island,  is only accessible by boat or small plane.   About 300+ vacation homes dot half of the island, the other half is a state park.

Beautiful beaches, resort amenities, plus plenty of Florida wildlife and nature, a few restaurants and shops characterize this island paradise.

Barefoot Beach - Bonita Springs

Barefoot Beach is located in a preserve and park on one of the many barrier islands along SWFL's coast.

Although it is a natural and wild beach, to get there, you have to drive through a mile stretch of some of the most luxurious homes in the area.

Once you get to into the park there is a nature trail where you see wildlife, public restrooms, showers, a concession stand ... and the most beautiful beach!

Hours run from 8AM-Sundown.   It costs $10 to get into the park and beach, regardless of how many hours you spend there.  Barefoot Beach is located off of Bonita Beach Rd.

Dog Beach Park - Bonita Beach Dog Park

If you’re looking for the perfect destination for you and your four-legged friend, Bonita Beach Dog Park in Bonita Springs, Florida is the ideal spot for you.  

The Bonita Beach Dog Park is located on a tidal flat, so it's crucial to plan your trip accordingly. During mid to high tides, the beach can only be accessed by wading through water . However, once you arrive, you'll be greeted by breathtaking views and a spacious area for your dog to run free.

One thing to keep in mind is that this park does not have restrooms, but a portable toilet is available. What's the future of Cape Coral's Yacht Club? Council ponders massive project

Thanks to Hurricane Ian, Cape Coral officials are looking to change the Yacht Club as we know it and start over, with a project that could cost as much as $100 million.

Mayor John Gunter said the previously approved design avoided the "nucleus" of the yacht club and was focused heavily on the outer perimeter such as the sea walls, docks, and landscaping.

"So now that we've had the damage with our buildings on the interior of this project, now it's almost an open canvas, an open area," Mayor John Gunter told The News-Press.

The changes could include a new two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and restaurant.

Hurricane Ian left a severe mark on the city of Cape Coral and its residents, and after months of recovery, the city government discussed options Thursday for its premier gemstone: the Yacht Club Community Park.

During its January city retreat, the city council decided to take a "clean slate" approach to renovate the heavily damaged facilities.

The damaged facilities include the likes of the ballroom, the Tony Rotino Center, and the pier, which could take $1.5 million to repair .

City Manager Rob Hernandez wanted direction from the city council on how the city should proceed with renovations.

"Based on our calculations, we are above the 50% FEMA rule, and so it's likely that we're not going to be able to repair the buildings and that we're gonna have to start from scratch," Hernandez said.

The 50% rule requires structures with substantial damage, or damage exceeding 50% of their market value, to meet the same requirements as new construction and current hurricane code, such as elevating the buildings.

The Yacht Club area, which includes the yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a riverside beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s.

It was scheduled to close for two years to renovate the area and was waiting for permit approval, but Ian put those plans on hold while the city recovered.

Changes to the Yacht Club

James Pankonin, a landscape architect with Kimley-Horn, gave a presentation explaining possible changes that can be made to the design of the project.

He explained that design plans are 90% complete, Wright Construction is preparing a pricing update, and permits with the various city, state, and federal agencies are filed and under review.

The council supports changing the direction and reconfiguring the design of the Yacht Club with some suggesting a bigger ballroom, possibly removing the tennis courts, and changing the placement of the facilities to accommodate a parking garage.

"I don't want to lose the historical nature of the ballroom and what it meant," Councilman Tom Hayden said during the discussion.

The mayor said that with all these changes, the project could easily cost $100 million, so exploring public-private partnerships will also be on the table and lead to more restaurants or shops.

Councilmembers Bill Steinke, Hayden, and Gunter discussed eliminating the tennis courts as the council recently approved plans for more courts at Lake Kennedy.

"For me, I've never thought tennis courts at the yacht club were the best use of land anyways," Gunter said.

Councilmember Patty Cummings suggested completing the project in phases , and Hernandez agreed since the facilities are currently closed.

"I would think that Wright could develop a phasing plan for the landside construction to bring things on board incrementally," Hernandez said.

What's Next?

Kimley-Horn will take the feedback and work on new designs, which will be presented to the council in the coming months.

"I would say up to about 90 days to at least get a preliminary, like I said this is going to be a multi-step process," Gunter said.

The city will then provide the council with finance options, possibly going the route of using bonds as previously discussed.

"There'll be a cost analysis that they will provide at that time, and then I'm sure our finance director will give us some scenarios a different type of funding mechanisms," Gunter said.

To residents worried about future changes, the mayor said there will be several chances in upcoming meetings to address the council.

"And I can see our developer or designer coming back several times, so council, staff, the community can all weigh in and craft it and move to the next step, and the next step until we get a final draft ," Gunter said added.

Election 2024: Who won the Cape Coral City Council primary?

The top-two vote-getters in each Cape Coral City Council election 2024 race have been determined as of the primary. Now, they will face each other in the November election.

In Cape Coral, council positions are elected at-large. Terms are four years long, and members are limited to two consecutive terms. As the position is nonpartisan, all voters, Republican, Democrat and other, get to vote on these candidates.

Council members are paid a base annual salary of $37,368.96. Last year, the council approved stipends worth another $39,996 a year, which has proven to be an unpopular choice with this year's slate of candidates.

District 2 covers the southwest portion of Cape , bound by Veteran's Memorial Parkway to the north, extending halfway between Chiquita Boulevard South and Skyline Boulevard to the east, curving further east along Cape Coral Parkway West, and ending where El Dorado Parkway curves to the northeast.

Dan Sheppard , the incumbent, ran against Laurie Lehmann and Craig Unroe .

Final returns posted by Lee County’s Supervisor of Elections website showed Lehmann the projected winner. Lehmann took more than 40% of the vote, garnering 10,789 votes. Her next-closest opponent, Sheppard, took home 32% of the vote; 8,608 people cast their votes for him.

Now, the two will face off in the November general election.

“(I'm) just thankful that the citizens voted for me, have confidence in me and want to move me forward,” said Sheppard, who finished second. He declined to talk about the impact the stipend issue might have in November’s match-up after a night that knocked out a fellow incumbent.

Dan Sheppard, 61

Previous Experience: Incumbent started own New Jersey business in 1984 as architectural millwork designer and manufacturer that became provider for casinos, hospitals, large retail chains such as JCPenney, and the U.S. Postal Service. Owning three retail stores until a move to Florida, he started Sheppard Landscape in Cape Coral in 1999, incorporating in 2005, and then later, Palm Source Pine Island, which grows and sells palms to U.S. and Bahamas landscape firms. He said he's active supporting and donating to many Cape Coral non-profit groups.

Top Priorities: "The top priority is to remove the lock at the south spreader canal, completing infrastructure, beautifying medians, sidewalks, investing in parks and additional green space and protecting the quality of our waterways."

Laurie Lehmann, 70

Previous Experience: District 2 resident since 2004, she's a retired registered nurse. With bachelor's degree in economics/accounting, she said she previously was accountant at New Jersey commercial construction firm. She also was involved with bids, contract negotiations through projects for large pharmaceutical and chemical firms and was an Occupational Safety and Health officer. She's been active with Save Jaycee Park group.

Top Priorities: "In District 2, we have a flooding problem when it rains. Also, we have a park that is a fire liability. These are both priorities. I feel we need to know what $2.5 million was spent on in the park and rectify the fire hazard that could damage peoples’ homes with the dead broken trees and vegetation.  We were to have a 50-foot fire barrier bordering the park and, as yet, it is nonexistent.  Storm drains and sewers need to be cleaned out not just in District 2 but throughout the city.  We need to maintain what we already have before spending money on new projects."

District 3 is bound by Northeast Pine Island Road to the north, Cultural Park Boulevard South and Santa Barbara Boulevard to the west, Archer Parkway to the south and Country Club Boulevard to the east.

Incumbent Tom Hayden did not seek reelection for the four-year term. Instead, Daniel Ludlow , Chad Bruening , Derrick Donnell and Deborah Lee McCormick all ran for the position.

In the District 3 Cape Coral City Council race, Donnell and McCormick had the most votes, according to final numbers. Donnell took top honors at 32% or 8,409 votes cast for him; McCormick trailed slightly at just under 30% or 7,757 votes cast. They will face off in the Nov. 5 general election, eliminating Ludlow and Bruening from contention for the four-year term.

“I’m incredibly thankful to God, my family and everyone who has assisted me on this campaign,” McCormick said.  “The voters chose myself and Mr. Donnell to be the candidates for District 3, and I wish the best of luck to him in this campaign.

"Going into November, I want voters to know that I’m one of them. I’m a citizen who wants to see her city thrive. Let’s rescind the stipend, restore citizen boards, protect Jaycee Park and make life more affordable for our citizens by making government more efficient.”

Derrick Donnell, 60

Previous Experience: Lee School District educator and former administrator and director of professional standards, equity and recruitment; Florida SouthWestern College adjunct professor; U.S. Marine commissioned officer; University of Central Florida doctorate's degree in education; Jackson State University master’s and bachelor’s degrees; former member of Cape city council, Lee Human Services Council, Metropolitan Planning Organization and Citizens Advisory Committee.

Top Priorities: "The top priorities impacting my district are restoring confidence in the city council by rescinding the current stipend, implementing smart growth policies, ensuring sidewalks are a component of all future developments, and improving both current traffic patterns and the conditions of the canals. The first issue council must tackle is to begin the hard work of restoring confidence in the city council by rescinding the current stipend."

Deborah McCormick, 68

Previous Experience: She describes herself as a 35-year civil servant with the state and a volunteer and member with Grace Church in Cape Coral. 

Top Priorities: "Although I’m running to represent District 3, I’m accountable to every Cape Coral voter as members of the City Council are elected citywide. Therefore, my top priority, as well as what my priority for the city will be, is to restore trust back in our city council. This can be done by reestablishing citizen advisory boards to respect the views of citizens, rescinding the stipend and amending the charter so a future council can’t circumvent voters ever again, and supporting our first responders so our city remains safe for all of our residents. The first issue that I would tackle would be the egregiously high stipend. I would immediately motion to rescind it."

District 4 is bordered on the south by Cape Coral Parkway, extends just a few blocks north of 26 E. Terrace, extends one block east of Country Club Boulevard, and two blocks west of Skyline Boulevard.

Unlike other districts up for election this year, the winner of this race will serve a two-year term because former council member Patty Cummings was removed before her term expired when she was investigated for election fraud.

Cummings pleaded guilty to election fraud last week and was sentenced to two years' probation .

But on the ballot, voters had a choice between former District 4 city council member Jennifer Nelson , Robert Sutter , William Matthews and incumbent Richard Carr, who was appointed to Cummings' seat after her removal.

Nelson, who narrowly lost her seat in 2022 by less than two points to now-ousted councilor Cummings, and Carr, who took over Cummings' seat after her removal, garnered the most primary votes in Tuesday's election.

The two will move on to the general election. With 100% of precincts reporting, Nelson won a stunning 35% of the vote, snagging 9,089 votes and far outpacing her fellow District 4 contenders. Carr came in a distant second, with 25% of the vote, or 6,833.

"I'm very excited," said Nelson. "I feel grateful and honored that the citizens have clearly given their trust back to me. I'm looking forward to the general election and hoping that with a win I can restore faith in our government and bring peace back to our residents. I feel so honored."

Her opponent is ready for the challenge.

"I am honored to have received enough support from our residents to  advance to the general election," Carr said via email. "I want to thank the other candidates for their participation in the campaign; I’ve appreciated their insight and commitment to our city. I will work hard to earn the confidence and votes of those I didn’t reach in the primary. I am eager to continue representing our city as the District 4 Councilmember and to help guide our growing community forward."

Richard Carr, 59

Previous Experience : Former police officer; managed Cape Coral's code enforcement division for more than six years.

Top Priorities: "We are elected citywide and responsible for the betterment of the entire city. However, in District 4, the "old golf course" has sat abandoned for many years. I will do everything possible for the city to acquire the land and maintain the green space to enhance the quality of life for all who wish to enjoy it."

Jennifer Nelson, 54

Previous Experience: Nelson was the District 4 city council member from 2017-2022. Since her narrow loss to Cummings, she has been a consultant with Purpose Driven Strategies for nonprofits and businesses.

Top Priorities: "District 4's top priority is purchasing the old golf course. With 184 acres of green space, this land would give us much-needed amenities in our city and give us the green space our city lacks for our population size. I would prioritize our projects and make sure we have the appropriate funding sources identified so as to not burden our taxpayers. Additionally, we need a policy in place that not only protects our green space, but also preserves our commercial zoning areas so we can continue to grow the commercial tax base which is lacking in our city."

Election 2024: Former Cape Coral District 4 councilmember Jennifer Nelson runs again, speaks on top priorities

District 5 encompasses much of central Cape. It is bordered on the east by Cultural Park Boulevard South, on its jagged northernmost edge by Northeast Pine Island Road, Tropicana Parkway W and Embers Parkway W and SW Pine Island Road, and on the west and south by Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Joseph Kilraine , Jason Conzelman , Charlie Pease and Robert Welsh , the incumbent, faced off for the District 5 seat.

In the District 5 Cape Coral City Council race, Pease, with 34%, or 9,004 votes, and Kilraine, with 32%, or 8,468 votes, had wide leads over their competitors but a tight race between the two of them. Pease and Kilraine will now face off in the Nov. 5 general election, eliminating incumbent Welsh, who had 22% in late results, and Conzelman, who had 11%.

Among District 5 voters, a major issue has been stipends the City Council approved earlier this year to supplement council pay.

“I’d like to thank the voters and I look forward to a good race in November,” Kilraine said. “I’m feeling really good about it. (As for November), we’re just going to do more of the same. It ain’t over ’til it’s over. We just gotta keep working at it.”

His opponent in the November election, Pease, felt much the same way.

"I was fortunate to come out on top in the primary but we have two more months leading up to November," Pease said. "I’m excited to put together an even bigger team over the next two months and move forward."

Pease said he was unsurprised at the poor performance of so many incumbents, given the vivid frustration a lot of Cape residents have regarding the council's implementation of a large stipend for themselves and what many term the mishandling of Jaycee Park.

"I think definitely the stipend was a hot-button topic," Pease said. "There needs to be trust and leadership restored to the council.

"I’m certainly not someone who will take the stipend. I’ll make sure we end it. I think that’s low-hanging fruit at this point. I think we also need to restore volunteer advisory boards, all the things that ultimately led to the council taking over the CRA and getting to the stipend."

Charlie Pease, 41

Previous Experience : Lifelong educator (teacher, assistant principal, principal) who is director of Cape Technical College. Board membership with Cape Charter School Authority Governing Board, Cape Museum of History and Cape Mayor’s Scholarship Fund. Co-founder of Keep Our Parks and Rec Cape Coral and member of Urban Land Institute, Cape Advisory Panel, Cape Economic Development Strategic Planning Roundtable, a state Department of Education workforce education funding committee and Cape Chamber of Commerce.

Top Priorities: "My top priorities for District 5 are the same for the entire city and they are all interrelated.

"Restoration of Trust: Ending the stipend and listening to residents. This includes restoring advisory boards, adding townhall meetings, proactive updates on projects and transparent decision-making.

"Smart Growth: Infrastructure planning for traffic, stormwater management, water and sewer Utilities Extension Project (UEP that includes cost reduction strategies), amenities, parks and conservation of green spaces.

"Fiscal Responsibility: Ensuring taxpayer money is used effectively to benefit our community while keeping taxes as low as possible. This includes budget transparency and restoration of the Budget Review Committee."

Top Priorities: "District issues much the same as city at large. Residents feel betrayed by council’s self-serving-dismissive actions last 18 months (i.e., firing of volunteer resident advisers, the lack of transparency in many actions including the stipend, ignoring hands-off Jaycee Park 7,800-resident petition, chicanery around stipend adoption).

Elections 2024: Cape Coral City Council District 5 member Robert Welsh running for reelection: Q&A

The district covers the northeast sectio n of the city, beginning at the intersection of Northeast Pine Island Road and Santa Barbara Boulevard and spreading north and east.

Only two candidates qualified to run for election in District 7. As a result, the race will not be on the ballot for the Aug. 20 primary and will go straight to the November election.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden was ineligible as she has served two consecutive terms on city council. Both candidates are newcomers to politics and are longtime Cape Coral residents.

Rachel Kaduk , 34

Experience: Kaduk, a native to Cape Coral, is a loan officer at Sanibel Captiva Community Bank. Prior to that, she served as the business development manager for Seminole Casino Hotel.

Top Priorities: "I want to mend the relationship between council and the residents, rescind the stipend and amend the city charter. I want to reinstate our volunteer committees, such as the budget review committee; I think that’s essential. I have an infrastructure initiative because in District 7 the utility expansion is becoming too costly for homeowners and we don’t want people leaving Cape Coral. I want to look into improving the permitting process, and then of course I want to keep an eye on all our general obligation (GO) bond projects and make sure those are completed before we begin new ones."

Michael Harper , 60

Experience: Harper has owned Edison Mortgage Services since 2020; prior to that, he was a partner with Edison Mortgage Group from 2015-2020. He has worked as a loan officer and real estate agent.

Top Priorities: "My priorities, if elected, would focus on the infrastructure, affordable housing and the UEP in the North Cape. While there are many other issues that need addressing, I feel these three are ones that directly affect the quality of life for those living in Cape Coral.
