Lazzara Yachts’ History

Lazzara Yachts, the Tampa, FL-based luxury yacht builder famed for their personalized yacht designs and exceptional support service, has been winning awards for its innovative designs almost since the company’s inception. While the pioneering company was officially founded in 1990, Lazzara Yachts’ history stretches back more than half a century ago to 1955, when a sea-loving chemical engineer named Vince Lazzara decided to build himself a boat. That vessel, a 40’ sailboat built in conjunction with AeroMarine, was at the time the largest fiberglass boat ever built, manufactured using fiberglass applications that Vince had pioneered. That first taste of boat building fired Vince’s passion, and in 1960 he started Columbia Yachts to produce his own line of fiberglass sailboats. Over the next several years, Vince worked hard perfecting his designs and processes, growing Columbia Yachts into the world’s largest manufacturer of fiberglass sailboats.

After selling the company in 1967, Vince relocated to Florida, founding Gulfstar Yachts in the early 1970s. Early models out of Gulfstar Yachts suffered from poor workmanship and shoddy construction, but in 1975 Vince made a bold move to rehab the struggling company, beginning production of high quality, high-performance motor yachts . By the 1980s, Vince Lazzara’s two sons were involved with the company and Gulfstar’s production quality had improved so greatly that they were producing some of the finest performance-oriented sailboats on the water.

Lazzara’s sons, Brad and Dick, increasingly gravitated to powerboat design, eventually selling their interest in Gulfstar Yachts in 1989 and leaving to start their own company. In 1990, Lazzara Yacht Corporation opened its doors, launching the company’s first yacht, the Lazzara 76, two years later. That first model, a combination of a production and custom yacht, established Lazzara Yachts’ production process of allowing the owner to participate and personalize his yacht to reflect his own tastes.

Years of production and model advances followed, along with numerous awards for innovative design and patented processes. Lazzara Yachts’ models have grown in length, features, and variety, and the company’s offerings now range from 64’ sport yachts to a luxurious 120’ superyacht. The third generation of the Lazzara family is now on board at the family-run company, which continues to build a sterling reputation as a builder of revolutionary yachts offering exceptional luxury, performance, and style.

Lazzara Yachts under new ownership

Lazzara Yachts has been purchased by the Avanti Ocean Group.

Company president, Joe Lazzara has announced that the new company will do business as Lazzara Custom Yachts and Tampa Marine Services.

“This was a decision that I thought was necessary going forward in order to compete with all the foreign money we’re seeing being poured into competing brands,” said Lazzara

“In order to compete at this level, especially now versus 10 years ago, the capital investment [component] is huge,” he said. “We have received many offers from overseas money, just put it at that. We’ve been approached by groups … but we made a decision that we wanted to remain majority family-owned and in control. Although we don’t have that type of financial backing, one of the benefits is … being able to react to market trends that are happening as fast as they ever have been, and being able to come out with product that reacts to that. We don’t have to go through all these layers of management to get approval.”

Last of a Breed: Meet Lazzara Yachts’ Dick Lazzara

You know you want it...

Pride and dedication to the pursuit of perfection are a Lazzara family tradition. Dick Lazzara learned that ethos from his Pop, Vince, in Chicago, where the elder Lazzara built his first fiberglass sailboat in 1954.

Dick started sailing and fishing at age three on Lake Michigan. He swapped shoveling snow for sand at age nine when the family moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. He joined his father in the family business, Gulfstar, building trawlers and motor sailers in 1974.

Now at age 60, the patriarch of a privately held, third-generation family company, Dick has guided his sons, Joey, Tony and Richie into different specialized disciplines. But Dick Lazzara is the last of a dying breed, as few of today’s yacht manufacturer/owners can design, engineer, build, sell and race both sailing and power yachts.

Dick Lazzara grew up with industry icons, learning design purism from Olin Stephens, the execution of craftsmanship from Henry Hinckley, and brokerage from Dick Bertram. He’s raced sailboats in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit and sailed one designs. He loves the Bahamas, having spent much time at his father’s residence on Cat Cay.

In 1971, Lazzara served with the Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the secret service in 1972 to a presidential support detail in Miami to protect President Nixon  before joining Gulfstar two years later.

Family Legacy For a cruising boat, the Gulfstar was very good upwind. Today the Lazzara family is still renowned for striking a nice balance between design, function, quality and production at an affordable price: the key to successful mass production.

“It was a fast indoctrination to yacht building with 400 other employees,” Lazzara recalls.

Gulfstar merged with Viking in 1987, and in 1991 Dick opened Lazzara Yachts with his father and his brother, Brad.

“Dad’s the first one there in the morning and the last to leave at night,” says his son, Joey. “He leads by example.”

Lazzara Yachts is still an innovator in design and manufacturing processes. The Lazzara Quad 75 is known for its joystick maneuverability and smart control systems powered by four Volvo Penta IPS 600 units with a counter-rotating, forward facing propeller.

The LSX 64, their latest introduction, is an open concept express yacht topping out at 35 knots. The split-level is one of the LSX’s attractive features – something Poppa Vince did with his sailboats and trawlers for years, where you’re at the helm and look down into the galley. It’s kind of a New York loft look.

“I never thought my Dad would ever go down that road, but he did,” says son, Joey. “It was very difficult to get him to go so dark at the beginning. The whole build was a contrast between dark and light. Now dark wood and light fabric is a hot trend.”

Life in the fast lane Lazzara’s son, Joey, joined the company after Dick had a horrific accident in 2001 while racing offshore powerboats.

“It was a long, tough road for my family and they really hung together,” Dick says. “They didn’t know whether or not I would live for over a month (after the accident).”

It’s hard to believe that a handsome man like Dick Lazzara hovered near death for a month or suffered severe facial trauma. His neighbors in Lithia, Fla., who know him as a rancher breeding Clydesdales, would be surprised to know he raced boats in a fast-paced lifestyle.

He crashed at 90 miles per hour, resulting in life-threatening injuries, including a fractured sinus cavity. He was told to expect blindness within three years. His jaws were wired shut and he had seven titanium plates, an optical metal screen and more than 400 stitches.

Lazzara was fortunate to survive the accident and come back to the yachts that are his passion, the company that he has nurtured, and the family that he loves. He is a relaxed, calm man who’s slowed down. After living a fast life for years, the 10-acre ranch and the horses are his hobby and refuge.

“Being at the ranch is like the water in Key West,” Dick says. “It is so peaceful and quiet out in the middle of nowhere with the stars out at night.”

For Lazzara, the ranch provides serenity, refreshing his brain to provide innovative ideas for boats. It keeps his feet on the ground, which is important for an executive traveling the world with million dollar yachts and wealthy people.

“God only gave us so many days on earth,” he says. “The ones at sea don’t count against you.”

I worked in tooling department at Gulfstar and built the 47 Sailmaster, 44 sailboat and 44 Trawaler. It was a fun place to work while attending college at USF. Ar-Men Hess was real character. Nick Ershimono and Duke Snyder were also fun to work with.

Now for the piece de resistance : at the press of a button, huge hull sections on each side lower to almost sea level, doubling the size of the rear deck and creating an impressive beach club.

Want to take a dip, or step right on to your jet ski, tender or paddle board? The large teak swim platform can lower or rise up, by pushing another button.

And if you want to keep your back deck private, there’s a roomy forward deck entertainment area—Lazzara calls it the “bow lounge”—that features a stretch-out, U-shaped sofa and a huge sunpad.

These are just a few of the innovations that come with the all-new Lazzara Limited Edition LSX 67, set to make its global debut in Florida early next year.

“We’ve created a 67-foot sport express cruiser that feels like a much bigger, more spacious yacht,” Deniz Diduk, Lazzara Yachts ‘ Istanbul-based marketing director tells Robb Report , with some understatement.

While this dramatically styled yacht was designed at Lazzara’s Tampa headquarters, the LSX 67 was built in Turkey by parent company Euro Marine Group.

This head-turning fast cruiser is distinguished by its dramatic ax bow and vast, single-piece glass windscreen that flows back into a curved roof with a large opening glass sunroof.

And this first, just-launched production boat is finished in a glorious shade of deep, dark blue, called Lazzara Blue, which is unique to the Limited Edition LSX 67. It’s complemented by splashes of lighter, aqua blue highlighting the hull windows.

The yacht’s composite hull and superstructure are molded from a concoction of epoxy resin, E-glass and carbon fiber to create high strength with reduced weight. And the hull does away with traditional through-hull openings in favor of so-called sea chests—to reduce the risk of water intrusion.

“Part of our DNA is also having highly redundant systems throughout the yacht to allow components to be serviced without the interruption of service on board. It’s designed to give an owner real peace of mind,” says Diduk.

To match the Lazzara’s sport-boat lines, the planing 35-ton yacht is powered by twin 1,000-horsepower Volvo IPS 1350 diesels with pod drives. Top speed is an estimated 38 mph, with 32 mph cruising. And with a draft of just 4’9”, the LSX 67 should be perfect for shallow-water Bahamian excursions.

Accommodations-wise, on the main level there’s a nicely laid out, though compact, salon with its L-shaped sofa facing a well-equipped galley. Sliding glass doors open out onto the back-deck dining area with wide, floating steps leading down to the beach club.

Forward in the bow is an ample-sized VIP ensuite cabin, with a corridor from the lower galley leading back to a twin-bed guest cabin and into the master suite.

Throughout the yacht, the quality and craftsmanship are apparent. From the high-gloss woodwork to the hand-stitched leather and recessed lighting, everything looks and feels a cut above.

Lazzara Yachts Under New Ownership

Lazzara Yachts was purchased by the Avanti Ocean Group, which consists of private investor Geoff Bond and third-generation family members Joe Lazzara and Steve Lazzara.

The new company will do business as Lazzara Custom Yachts and Tampa Marine Services, company president Joe Lazzara said.

The company’s first major capital investment is a sign of the times, when battered overseas markets have driven foreign boatbuilders here seeking opportunities and increased competition for U.S. boatbuilders.

“This was a decision that I thought was necessary going forward in order to compete with all the foreign money we’re seeing being poured into competing brands,” said Lazzara

“In order to compete at this level, especially now versus 10 years ago, the capital investment [component] is huge,” he said. “We have received many offers from overseas money, just put it at that. We’ve been approached by groups … but we made a decision that we wanted to remain majority family-owned and in control. Although we don’t have that type of financial backing, one of the benefits is … being able to react to market trends that are happening as fast as they ever have been, and being able to come out with product that reacts to that. We don’t have to go through all these layers of management to get approval.”

It also enables the company to continue its focus on customer service and more personal relationship cultivation, he said.

The investment has brought with it several changes for the company.

Lazzara had recently relocated from the Tampa, Fla., facility where it had operated for decades since Joe Lazzara’s grandfather was with the company.

“A better opportunity arose across the street, so we are still keeping our skilled labor, and we’re still in Tampa, where we want to keep manufacturing for the benefits,” Lazzara said.

The new facility is functional now, but is being upgraded and improved with the help of the capital investment, said Lazzara, who is the son of Dick Lazzara. His cousin Steve Lazzara, now CFO and a Stanford graduate, is the son of Brad Lazzara, who also served as financier of the company. Joe Lazzara handles design, engineering and building.

Lazzara has also been growing its service since the recession ended to include more than just Lazzara Yachts and decided to rebrand that part of the business to let consumers know service extended to other yacht brands, as well.

“One of the challenges the industry faces is, as all these builders come over, the service infrastructure has got to pick up to take care of them,” which is doubly challenged regarding boats built overseas, he said.

Since the United States is becoming more of a top market for builders, “it’s going to be a challenge” to service all the foreign boats. “There’s opportunity for my company. We’re going to continue to take care of Lazzara customers under the Lazzara brand, but under the Tampa brand we will reach out and service other brands because there is obviously demand.”

The company has been investing in one of the largest service yards on Florida’s West Coast, he said, including a new 300-ton lift that can haul boats as long as 170 feet.

Lazzara still uses a factory-direct model domestically, although it is seeking dealer channels overseas, Lazzara said.

The company currently builds boats up to 120 feet, and is also exploring relationships with other manufacturers to build Lazzara-designed boats from 120 to 170 feet.

“We’ll provide engineering, drawings, designs, market them to our clients, and service them, but they will be manufactured and built by a reputable builder or builders overseas,” he said.

Now, Lazzara clients sometimes move to other brands when they have maxed out the size range. Joe Lazzara said he is already working on a 140-foot model.

Lastly, the company will start building more of its Lazzara barges as they grow in popularity. The company recently sold a 90-foot, 40-foot wide barge that was a common stay at boat shows. “We’re getting into the business of building more of these of different sizes; that project is already under way.”

Lazzara Yachts’ “extra-voluminous” 21m model well underway

The first unit in Lazzara Yachts ' LPC 300 series is well underway at the shipyard's facilities in Antalya, Turkey.

The 21.3-metre model has been commissioned by a French client and will largely cruise the Mediterranean, with plans to spend the first summer season in Turkey and the Greek islands. Delivery is scheduled for October 2024.

Previously named the LPC 70, the model outgrew its name due to its "massive interior volume".

"I don't think there's another 70ft yacht out there that has this much space – around 300 square metres – and it's because of our extra deck," explained David Galante, executive vice president of Lazzara Yachts. "We're able to do everything that we already do on our other, larger builds."

Accommodation is for ten guests across five cabins, with additional space for four crew. This includes an 8.8-metre-wide master cabin on the lower deck, designed with a private door to the beach club and a mezzanine that opens to the ocean. The model will also be fitted with floating shelves and a vanity to ensure unimpeded sea views.

Fully insulated walls and ceilings allow for entertaining in a vessel of this size without disturbing guests. Renderings reveal a sundeck spa pool with bar, beach club arranged with sunloungers and ample opportunities for al fresco dining and lounging.

Other highlights include a wine bar and a hydraulic platform that can carry Jet Skis and a 4.6-metre tender.

While the contracted maximum speed for the LPC 300 is 18 knots, the shipyard believes that the new model will end up exceeding expectations.

Construction is also well underway on the first hull in Lazzara Yachts' 30.5-metre series, the UHV 100. Design standouts include a "huge pilot house", a full-beam upper deck saloon and a six-person dip pool.

Vince Lazzara, a chemical engineer by trade, built his first yacht back in 1955 for the most demanding of customers: himself. Learning to master boat building skills as he went, Vince’s labor of love ended up producing what was at the time the world’s largest fibreglass yacht. Buoyed by this successful project, Vince established found Columbia Yachts in order to produce sailing boats for customers around the U.S. In the late 1960s, Vince sold Columbia Yachts and moved to Florida for the next stage of his yachting story, where he would establish Gulfstar, the company that would eventually give birth to today’s Lazzara Yachts. While at the helm of Gulfstar Yachts, and assisted by his sons Brad and Dick, Vince ultimately switched to the sole production of diesel-powered motoryachts in the 1980s.

In 1992, the Lazzara Yachts brand finally came into being. Brad and Dick Lazzara, already equipped with a lifetime’s experience in the yachting industry, decided to strike out on their own. The first yacht launched by their new brand was the Lazzara 76, stylish luxury superyacht that was an instant, best-selling classic. The company has never looked back since, creating line after line of luxury vessels with sleek, modern designs, unmatched performance and innovative engineering. In 2006, the company introduced the LSX model of yacht, a truly modern offering that combines the exceptional speed and power of a sports yacht with the space, comfort and amenity of pleasure crafts.

Since Brad and Dick’s retirement, the firm has been headed by Joe Lazzara, the third generation in the family to own and operate a yachting firm. Based out of Tampa, Florida, with a Turkish manufacturing facility opening in 2019 in the free trade zone of Antalya, Lazzara’s ambitions are as lofty as ever. The firm currently constructs five models of yacht and catamaran from 60 to 120 feet in length, each among the most popular models available anywhere today. Lazzara LSX 85

This ambitious new yacht from Lazzara is designed to be the ultimate entertaining yacht. At 85 feet in length and a beam of 20 feet, this stylish yacht is certainly large, but feels even bigger due to its inventive use of space. A large beach club equipped with L-shaped sofas to the rear comes with a submersible swimming deck and folding teak side panels that lay flat to offer even more party space. Interiors feel light and breezy due to extensive use of floor-to-ceiling tinted windows, while the downstairs living suite can be opened up to the elements through use of yet another folding side panel that doubles as a cute breakfast balcony. A large and partially sheltered aft deck is the perfect place to sip cocktails, while the generous salon room and full galley can be used for more formal dining. Though primarily designed with entertaining in mind, this yacht does not compromise on performance either. Triple Volvo IPS 1200 engines give the vessel a top speed of 42 knots and a cruising range of 550 nautical miles, enough to whisk you from Miami to the Bahamas in no time at all.

Lazzara LPC 70

A cruising catamaran with plenty of space, this dual-hulled yacht is another great option for those who wish to host exceptional floating parties. A beach club to the rear of the catamaran benefits from the vessel’s 27-foot beam to provide space for up to 5 beach loungers side to side. Curved staircases lead from here up to the main deck, where you will find a roomy dining space and a formal living room. At the bow of the ship a further, wide deck space lined with teak flooring is available for sunbathing. Below-deck there are four well-appointed guest cabins, two crew cabins and a large master stateroom with direct access to the aft deck. The catamaran is fitted with twin Volvo engines for top speeds of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots.

Lazzara UHV 125

The largest vessel yet produced by Lazzara, the UHV 125 delivers on its name to provide Ultra High Volume both inside and out. Four large and lavish exterior decks, from the massive modular bow deck to the front of the boat, to the aft deck beach club with swimming platform at the rear, will doubtless become the go-to spots on this superyacht. A semi-sheltered skybridge, meanwhile, offers superb views from atop the vessel and enough room to fit a jacuzzi. Interiors are just as large, benefiting from the yacht’s 125 feet length and almost 29 feet wide beam. The vessel’s semi-custom build means that buyers can fit and refit interiors to their heart’s content, making this the ultimate, personalized party yacht.

Lazzara LSY 120

A yacht that combines the responsiveness and speed of a racing yacht with the amenity and space of a luxury superyacht, the LSY 120 is perhaps Lazzara’s flagship model. A sleek, ergonomic superstructure and hull is built out of epoxy and eGlass composite for durability and a lightweight feel, while triple Volvo engines will produce plenty of power. A tiered and free-flowing deck space is ideal for entertaining as guests can move seamlessly from bow deck to aft. The salon room on the flybridge, dining space and galley on the main deck and four large guest cabins below deck will easily accommodate up to 8 guests with further room for crew.
