Oyster Yachts sails back to profit after remarkable turnaround

The luxury yacht manufacturer sailed into the black with a 29 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover to £56.4 million in 2023. Hadida has invested heavily in the business to guarantee its long-term future.

The company achieved a profitable month in January and expects an overall Q4 profit for the year ending 2024. Recently appointed CEO Ashley Highfield has also highlighted major investments to enhance the customer experience, plus upgrades to the Oyster World Rally.

The company returned to profit following heavy investment in manufacturing facilities, staff and new support services. The company makes blue water sailing yachts; after launching a record 32 yachts in 2022, Oyster maintained full occupancy of all its shipyard’s build bays during FY23.

During that time, it grew staff by a third to increase skills and production capability across its three UK manufacturing sites: Saxon Wharf and Hythe Marine Park in Southampton and Wroxham in Norfolk.

It also expanded its customer services, with a global service network, refit operation, unrivalled after-sales support, crew, and charter services. Hadida, the owner and chair made a £14.5m additional investment to enable the expansion of the business.

This led to a successive record year for production, brokerage sales, and charters, as Oyster looks to continue building market share and consolidate its position as the go-to luxury blue water yachting brand.

The investment in new models, facilities and customer services explains an underlying operating loss of £16.8m in the YE23 accounts – during the fifth year of renewal for the business since Hadida stepped in to save the brand.

Ashley Highfield said: “Margins have continued to grow, and we have achieved positive EBITDA in recent months, which we expect to continue. We are increasing investment in our yachts, with focus on flawless quality and craftsmanship, to ensure they deliver unforgettable adventures where lifelong memories are made.

“We are confident Oyster is now in a strong position and has the resources and facilities to service our vessels world-wide and provide owners with truly personalised support.

“Investing heavily in the founding principles of Oyster Yachts is translating into stronger business results, whilst offering owners a lifetime of adventure, backed up by truly world-class service and support.”

With the Oyster World Rally 2026-27 already fully subscribed, it has recently announced the Oyster World Rally 2028-29. With only 30 places, demand is expected to be high.

The Oyster World Rally is a unique, fully supported circumnavigation of the planet, covering 27,000 nautical miles, 27 destinations, and 16 months in a single adventure, exclusively for Oyster owners. Oyster Yachts have completed over 20 million blue water sailing miles and over 100 circumnavigations.

Oyster Yachts is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023. Designed and built across four build centres in Norfolk and Hampshire, we take a look inside and explore some of the facts & figures behind these sites.

Oyster continues to invest in new production facilities, techniques, and technology, always striving to make their yachts better and more sustainable. With a forward order book extending over two years, Oyster is implementing more efficient production processes across its four build centres in Wroxham & Ashmanhaugh, Norfolk and Southampton and the newly acquired state-of-the-art production facility at Hythe, Hampshire.

A freshly moulded 565 hull and deck, awaiting final quality assurance sign-off by Lloyd Register prior to fitting deck to hull.

From on deck, right down to the keel, all Oyster hulls boast uncompromising strength of construction certified by Lloyd’s Register or DNV, featuring a combination of stringers and frames for extreme durability and safety.

A white NPG resin gel coat is standard for Oyster, which has excellent UV resistance and waterproofing qualities. Applied to its optimum thickness – not too thin that it compromises waterproofing, but also not too thick that would make the surface brittle. Oyster’s approach is about the quality of a beautiful, moulded surface that weathers the elements and time.

Rigorous attention to detail and quality assurance checks are applied even before full-blown fit-out commences and are continued throughout the manufacturing process.

Meticulous preparation of the cockpit internal moulding liner, ready-to-accept headlining soft furnishings and downlight fittings.

Oyster’s outstanding quality is a result of the finest British master craftspeople and meticulous attention to detail. Hand-selected veneers are grain and colour-matched throughout.

The standard of craftsmanship is exceptional, from the hand-built cabinetry to the intuitively placed handholds, – an unrivalled detail. Each Oyster is unique and built to reflect the personality and taste of individual owners.

Cabling behind the scenes is both named and numbered to make testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance simple. Exterior cables have tinned cores for anti-corrosion and uncompromised connection. Extensive use of waterproof connectors, both above and below decks significantly extends the lifespan of electrical connections and components.

Oyster’s design approach combines expert naval architecture, time-served craftspeople, modern materials, and the latest proven technology. Every detail has been carefully considered and space is maximised for comfort in the large volumes down below.

Oyster’s DNA is rooted in over 20 million bluewater sailing miles and over 100 circumnavigations of the globe. This relentless pursuit of perfection allows constant evolution and refinement that makes Oyster one of the most reliable yacht brands.

Oyster World Rally 2024-2025 officially underway

The latest edition of the Oyster World Rally – a fully supported, 16-month circumnavigation of the world – is officially underway. The 30-strong Oyster fleet departed Nelson's Dockyard, Antigua on 14 January 2024.

When the rally is complete, the fleet will have travelled 27,000 nautical miles and made 27 stopovers. Locations include the Galapagos, Cocos (Keeling Islands), Cape Town and Grenada.

"The trick to this rally is three things: resources, time and health," said owner of the 22.7-metre Oyster 725 Intrepid . "Those stars have to align and they won't line up forever. So, if you have a chance to put those three things together, then you've got to do it."

The Oyster fleet will meet again in Panama for their transit through the canal in mid-February. The three routes to Panama include travelling north via the British Virgin Islands, south via the Caribbean, or south west via the ABC Islands.
