A fantastic weekend of sailing, almost 130 NM in all, with a relaxed, but fully engaging skipper. Great set up and brilliant on the admin. Thanks Stef, Tom et al!

Google Logo

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.

RYA Power Boat Courses (PB2)

Rya powerboat level 2.

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It includes close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations.

The RYA Powerboat level 2 course will supply you with the knowledge to confidently drive a powerboat and have sufficient knowledge around the essential areas, to ensure you are safe while afloat.

  • Required knowledge:   None. May be preceded by Level 1
  • Minimum duration:   2 days
  • Minimum age:  12 (endorsement applied to under 16s)
  • Course content:  Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard
  • Ability after the course:  Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft

The RYA Power boat 2 course covers the following topics:

  • Launching & Recovery
  • Safety Equipment
  • Lines and Fenders
  • Knots and use of Knots
  • Effects of Current or Tide
  • Boat Handling – power Trim and Tilt Fast & Slow Speed Manoeuvring
  • Securing to a buoy
  • Leaving and Coming Alongside Man Overboard
  • Towing and being towed

About the Course:

This course is completed over a two day period. During the two days you will spend a large quantity of the time on the water using learning with a very hands-on approach. We will also spend some time in the classroom and you will be expected to complete homework as part of the course. The course covers a lot of ground so be prepared to learn as you will be expected to demonstrate that you have mastered the skills you have been taught in order to pass the course.

The course will begin at 9am and finish at around 5pm on both days.

Day one (weather permitting) involves our introduction to the boat, safety equipment and clothing, boat handling and slow speed manoeuvres. Our first day concludes with a theory session where we look at Bouyage systems, charts, basic navigation methods and weather/tides.

Day two (Weather permitting) involves man over board drills, anchoring, high speed manoeuvring.

Benefits of holding an RYA powerboat level 2 qualification:

  • Many employers have this as requirement at a minimum. Following this qualification students can go on to take their International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which is a legal requirement for working with boats abroad.
  • Those who are new to boating will be able to ensure that they are starting in the right way, safely. The course focuses on ensuring that you develop a really good base understanding of boat handling, navigation and seamanship. After the course you can then ‘bolt on’ more practical experience to really cement the knowledge gained on the course.
  • For anyone who is thinking about buying a boat the rya pb level 2 course serves as a great way to become a more ‘educated buyer’. Being around so many boats and able to discuss the pros and cons of the various styles with the Instructor really helps when it comes to assessing the huge number of craft out there to buy.
  • If you own your own boat having the RYA powerboat 2 qualification could lower your insurance premiums as well as allow you to insure your boat through the RYA.
  • The course is relevant whether you have your own boat or don’t ever intend owning your own craft.

For group bookings please contact us directly as we try to be as flexible as possible. The course costs include the certificates and necessary books/manuals. We will provide lifejackets (unless you prefer to use your own) however trainees should also bring:

Waterproof/wet weather gear.

During this course you will be on the water and getting wet. Also bring warm tops and a change of clothes in case you get really wet. Shower facilities are available for you to use. Please bring wellies to wear on the water, of if you prefer deck shoes, but be warned these will get wet and you might get cold. Black soles and open toed sandals will not be allowed on the water.

Sun protection

Bring sun glasses as the flare from the sea can be intense even on overcast days. High factor sun cream is essential for everyone. A hat also provides extra protection on sunny days.

If you need to use glasses for reading please bring them and also if you require glasses to operate machinery please bring them as you will need them on the water. Please take necessary precautions against these falling into the water!

If you are taking any medication this must be indicated on the medical form at the start of the course. Please make sure you inform your instructor of this and bring any necessary medication with you.

Food and drink

We will provide tea coffee and soft drinks during the course. You will need to either bring your own lunch or money to buy some lunch each day. There are plenty of places in Beaumaris which offer food at lunch time.

Two passport size photos

On passing the course you will be issued with an official RYA certificate, and a passport photo of you will be required to complete this. Certificates cannot be issued without a photograph. Your certificate will then be officially registered with the RYA via its online registration system.

As noted in the booking form you are not insured for personal injury or loss of any items. You are advised to make direct arrangements with your own insurers if you consider such cover necessary.

RYA log book

If you already have an RYA log book you can bring this with you alternatively they are available for purchase from the RAYC at a cost of £10.

Marine VHF SRC

Marine Radio SRC Course and Exam

This RYA Marine radio SRC (Short range certificate) course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A vhf radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held. Bottom line is that you need an RYA VHF Radio License otherwise known a Short Range Certificate.

RYA Course

ICC  Assessment

Course Duration – 1 Day

The ICC (or to give it its full title International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It was historically known as the International Certificate of Competence.

(Where evidence of competence is necessary, is intended for British recreational boaters operating UK registered Pleasure Vessels and is based both on what we understand the law to say and boaters’ experiences in the country. The RYA generally recommends carrying the ICC as evidence of competence in other European countries).

Gaining commercial endorsements

Find out which certificates can be endorsed and how to apply, what is a commercial endorsement.

A commercial endorsement is required for work on board British flagged vessels subject to the MCA's codes of practice for small commercial vessels.

A number of additional training courses and medical fitness certificates are required to be eligible for a commercial endorsement.

For Sail Cruising and Yachtmaster Instructors who only work in Australia, or holders of a Yachtmaster Sail CoC who require an AMSA endorsement to evidence eligibility for the AMSA Sailing Master CoC, read our guidance on Australia endorsements .

Which certificates can be commercially endorsed?

The following certificates can receive the standard commercial endorsement

Course completion certificates:

  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Certificate
  • RYA Day Skipper practical course completion certificate supported by a Day Skipper shorebased course completion certificate. The Day Skipper shorebased course may be undertaken online or in the classroom. In either case, the exams must be invigilated.

Certificates of competence:

  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence

In addition, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates of Competence can receive the STCW endorsement .

Which certificate do I need?

The MCA's codes of practice categorise British flagged commercial yachts according to the type of yacht and the waters in which they operate. It is this categorisation that determines which of the above certificates you will need. See the MCA's table of manning requirements.

The RYA is a certifying authority for the codes of practice and can give advice on the coding and categorisation of commercial yachts.

Find out more about the Requirements for commercial craft .

How do I apply for a standard commercial endorsement?

Send the following items to RYA Certification, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hampshire SO31 4YA:

  • Your original certificate - see list above
  • Your Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate
  • A commercial endorsement application form
  • Your original, completed ML5 Medical Report form or ENG1 medical fitness form a photocopy of your ML5 if version MSF 4112 REV 02/23 or ENG1 Medical will be accepted*
  • A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • A copy of your RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate.
  • A passport sized photo with your name on the back
  • The application fee.

*We can only accept the latest version of the ML5 form (currently MSF 4112 / Rev 02/23). Skippers working in category 1 or 0 waters will need the ENG1 medical. A list of approved doctors can be found at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency .

Medical referrals

If your Doctor has entered any “Yes ticks” on your ML5 Medical Report form then your ML5 Medical will need to be referred onto the MCA to be reviewed and you will be required to complete Part D the Medical Review on page 12/16 of your ML5 Medical to provide the RYA with additional information to submit to the MCA. The MCA will not be able to give a decision on the issue of your Commercial endorsement if this section is not completed in full. The MCA will not accept any ML5 Medicals which are more than one year old.

If you are issued with a restricted ENG1 or ML5 Certificate of Medical Fitness, then your RYA Commercial endorsement will also be issued with restrictions. If you are considering a seagoing career the RYA and Maritime and Coastguard Agency strongly advise that you undergo a medical or sight test, which includes testing of colour and visual acuity, before starting training.

Restrictions on a ENG1 certificate will prevent you gaining STCW qualifications for vessels greater than 24m in length.

Professional Practices and Responsibilities course

Since April 2012 it has been a requirement for commercial endorsement holders to take the online Professional Practices and Responsibilities course (PPR).

All new applicants for the endorsement must take the course prior to submitting their application.

Existing commercial endorsement holders who gained their endorsement prior to April 2012 will be required to take the course prior to their next revalidation.

Find out more about PPR .

Re-validating your commercial endorsement

All commercial endorsements must be revalidated every five years by proving at least 150 days of actual sea service on appropriate vessels during the previous five years and be in possession of a valid medical fitness certificate.

If you are unable to prove the requisite sea service but are able to demonstrate that during at least half of the five-year period you have been employed on duties closely associated with the management and operation of one or more of the appropriate types of vessels, you may have your certificate considered for revalidation.

Validity of Commercial endorsements will be from date of processing for a maximum of 5 years.

Download the re-validation form .

RYA Powerboat Advanced Professional Qualifications

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level of certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc. If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. There are two types of Advanced certificate:

a)  A course completion certificate awarded by a training centre on successful completion of a two-day training course

b) A certificate of competence awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam

If you need a Powerboat Advanced certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 3, 4, 5 and 6 waters - that is up to 20 miles from a safe haven. Please note: it is only possible to commercially endorse an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence (option b above). The only exception to this is if you were awarded a course completion certificate (option a above) prior to 1 January 2005, in which case you may obtain a commercial endorsement without having to pass the exam.
