The yacht is also equipped with a helipad, a swimming pool, a spa, and a gym.

The best pictures of Koru

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

BOAT rounds up the best pictures of the three-masted sailing yacht owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos...

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Koru's helicopter landing

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru in Portofino

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Koru's figurehead

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

Koru in front of Palma Cathedral

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

Koru delivered to Mallorca

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Koru in Gibraltar

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru on sea trials

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

Koru with her masts stepped

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

Koru launched

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Koru moves through the Dutch canals

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

Koru from a bird's eye view

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

Koru rolls out of the shed

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

Jeff Bezos’s yacht docked in a port. There are palm trees in the foreground and cranes in the background.

By Lola Fadulu

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

The yacht has also been at the center of massive, worldwide controversy. Back in February 2022, Oceanco requested that a centuries-old bridge in the port city of Rotterdam be partially dismantled in order to get the behemoth out and onto the high seas. The masts, which are the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza, simply exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance and thus prevented Koru from passing under. Rotterdammers were none too pleased and threatened to pelt the yacht with rotten eggs . The request was subsequently denied, and the yacht was instead discreetly towed through Rotterdam without its mast.

The designers behind the yacht’s interior and exterior are yet to be named, but it’s clear that she’s a timeless and elegant cruiser. Koru , which is a Māori for “new beginnings,” features a sleek black hull and white superstructure. She also sports a large pool on the aft deck and a number of plush alfresco lounges.

The epic design isn’t able to accommodate a helicopter, however, as the soaring masts make it too unsafe to land. As a result, Bezos commissioned a second yacht to hold his toys and tenders. Christened Wingman, the custom 246-footer is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. It’s a good match for monumental Koru , then.

Jeff Bezos Yacht Koru, The Largest Sailing Yacht

Jeff Bezos' World's Largest Sailing Yacht: Koru

Jeff Bezos Yacht Koru A Controversial Start and a Symbolic Name

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire behind Amazon, is set to become the owner of the world's largest sailing vessel, S/Y Koru. The yacht, which measures 417 feet long, is currently undergoing open-seas testing before being delivered to its owner. The vessel has had a controversial start to its life, with a petition to dismantle a historic bridge in Rotterdam causing anger among the Dutch people. However, the boat was eventually moved to a different shipyard, and now it is almost ready to sail. In this editorial, we will look at S/Y Koru's design, its controversial start, and what the future holds for this massive sailing yacht.

The Largest Sailing Vessel in the World

Once S/Y Koru is delivered to Jeff Bezos, it will become the largest sailing vessel in the world. The yacht's sheer size is impressive, but its sailing capabilities are just as noteworthy. S/Y Koru has a hybrid propulsion system, which allows it to sail using wind power or a diesel engine. Crafted from cutting-edge materials, the yacht's sails are built to endure various weather conditions while delivering peak performance.

S/Y Koru's massive size and advanced technology come with a hefty price tag. It's been reported that constructing the yacht amounted to roughly $500 million, positioning it as one of the priciest vessels in existence. However, for Jeff Bezos, this is a drop in the bucket. The billionaire has a net worth of over $100 billion, making him one of the richest people in the world.

Symbolism and Design

The Jeff Bezos' Yacht Koru, which is not just a massive sailing yacht, but also a symbol of perpetual movement and the cycle of life, has a name inspired by the Māori symbol of the same name. The koru symbolizes the spiral of an unfurling fern frond and embodies the concept of how life both changes and remains constant, according to the New Zealand government's definition. Representing perpetual motion, the Koru's circular form with its inward coil signifies a return to the starting point.

The yacht's design is just as impressive as its symbolism. S/Y Koru was built by Oceanco, a Dutch yacht builder known for its high-end luxury vessels. The yacht has a sleek, modern design, with clean lines and a metallic grey finish. It features three masts and can accommodate up to 36 guests and 56 crew members. The yacht's interior is just as impressive, with a spa, gym, and even a climbing wall.

The Koru is not just a yacht; it's a statement. Its sheer size, advanced technology, and sleek design make it a testament to human innovation and engineering. It's the largest sailing vessel in the world, and it's a marvel to behold.

A Controversial Start

S/Y Koru's development process was not without controversy. In 2017, Oceanco petitioned the Rotterdam government to dismantle the Koningshavenbrug bridge so that the yacht could be moved to open water. The bridge, known locally as De Hef, is a symbol of local resistance against the invading forces during World War II. It was heavily damaged by Nazi shelling but managed to survive, becoming a testament to the city's resilience.

The Rotterdam city council refused the petition, causing anger among the Dutch people. Nearly 3,000 people signed up for a protest that involved throwing eggs at the yacht as it passed through town. However, the boat was eventually moved to a different shipyard without its masts early in the morning, avoiding any further controversy.

Top reasons why the Koru is a unique and impressive vessel:

Symbolic Design: The circular shape of the Koru represents perpetual motion, with its inward coil symbolizing a return to the starting point.

Cutting-Edge Materials: The yacht's sails are made from high-tech materials, designed to endure various weather conditions while delivering peak performance.

Advanced Technology: The Koru has a hybrid propulsion system, which allows it to sail using wind power or a diesel engine.

Impressive Size: Once delivered to Jeff Bezos, the Koru will become the largest sailing vessel in the world.

Luxurious Interior: The yacht can accommodate up to 36 guests and 56 crew members, with a spa, gym, and even a climbing wall.

Controversial Start: The yacht's development process was not without controversy, with a petition to dismantle a historic bridge in Rotterdam causing anger among the Dutch people.

Statement Piece: The Koru is not just a yacht; it's a statement. Its sheer size, advanced technology, and sleek design make it a testament to human innovation and engineering.

Jeff Bezos Yacht Koru is an impressive vessel, both in its size and design. The yacht's symbolism and modern features make it a unique addition to the luxury sailing world. While it may have had a controversial start, S/Y Koru is now ready to sail the open seas and embark on new adventures. Only time will tell what Jeff Bezos has planned for this magnificent yacht, but one thing is for sure - it will undoubtedly turn heads and be the envy of seafarers worldwide. S/Y Koru's advanced technology, sleek design, and exceptional performance make it a stunning feat of engineering and a true masterpiece on the water.

An Inside Look at Jeff Bezos’ $500 Million Superyacht and What It Costs To Keep It Afloat

C liché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .

Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.

Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

Also take a look at Bezos’ mansion collection.

Key Features

As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.

The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

For You: Make Yourself Money Smart: 20 ChatGPT Prompts To Increase Your Wealth

Support Vessel

One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.

Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.

Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.

On-Board Crew

It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.

The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.

Annual Operating Costs

Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.

The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).

When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.

In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.

While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

Jeff bezos's $500 million superyacht showcases sculpture resembling his fiancée on the bow.

Jeff Bezos's superyacht, named Koru, has been in the headlines for its immense size and impressive features. As the tallest sailing yacht in the world, Koru stands out with three towering masts that measure over 230 feet each. It is a marvel, ranking among the top 25 largest vessels globally and holding the distinction of being the largest ever to set sail from The Netherlands.

But what has truly captured people's attention is the captivating sculpture adorning the yacht, leading many to believe it may be a depiction of Bezos's fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.

Situated at the front of the 417-foot boat, the intricately crafted wooden figurehead showcases a woman with long hair wearing an elegant flowing dress. The sculpture has drawn attention for its striking resemblance to Sanchez, with its classical and feminine elements beautifully capturing her features. While the artist's identity remains undisclosed and the subject of the sculpture is unconfirmed by yacht builder Oceanco, its attention to detail and resemblance to Sanchez are undeniable.

Bezos has a penchant for symbolism, previously expressing his admiration for the koru symbol in a New Year's Day post in 2022 that emphasized personal growth, renewal and cherishing every moment of life. It is no surprise that the yacht proudly features the koru symbol in the form of a necklace worn by the wooden sculpture, further highlighting its significance.

Beyond its visual appeal, Koru, named for the Māori word for "loop" or "new beginnings,” holds a special place in the hearts of Bezos and Sanchez. It symbolizes a new chapter in their lives together. It was on Koru that Bezos proposed to Sanchez on May 23, marking a memorable moment in their romantic journey.

As Bezos's $500 million yacht gracefully sails the seas, it continues to mesmerize admirers not only for its grandeur but also for the remarkable artistry that pays homage to Bezos's beloved fiancée.

While Bezos indulges in his own artistic preferences, those intrigued by the financial possibilities of art investments can explore the benefits of fractionalized fine art with Freeport .

Founded in 2023, the innovative platform aims to provide access to esteemed artworks and unlock the potential for significant returns. The Artprice100 index, encompassing blue-chip artworks, has demonstrated annualized returns of 8.9% from 2000 to 2022, consistently outperforming the S&P 500.

Has the World Finally Had a Glimpse of Jeff Bezos’s $500 Million Mega-Yacht?

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is appears to be getting closer to welcoming the superyacht he reportedly commissioned in 2018: a fancy toy fitting for the world’s second-richest person, given that it costs a reported $500 million and breaks one world record after another.

Called Y721, this vessel of all vessels is being custom designed by Dutch builder Oceanco and was spotted at a shipyard last week in Zwijndrecht, a town in the western Netherlands. It’s reportedly heading to another Netherlands town, Alblasserdam, for a final fitting. With a length of 417 feet, Y721 is the biggest sailing yacht in the world and the longest vessel to be built in the Netherlands. Features include a black hull, classic shape, three large decks, and three masts.

Superyacht Bravo Eugenia , belonging to the U.S. billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was built by Oceanco, which is also rumored to be behind Bezos’s new massive vessel.

Y721 is going to totally change the world of yachting with its design and innovation, says Fernando Nicholson, a luxury yacht sales broker with the yachting company Camper & Nicholsons. “It’s a boat with the latest technology and bells and whistles that have never been seen,” he says. “This will be the standard for all superyachts to follow, but in years to come, when its features become more affordable. Right now, only someone with Bezos’s wealth can swing the cost.”

The superyacht is said to be modeled after Oceanco’s famous yacht, the Black Pearl , which the company site says , “is one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world. She can cross the Atlantic without burning even a liter of fossil fuel.” Y721 will go through sea trails following its fitting-out in Alblasserdam and is expected to be ready sometime next year.

The Flying Fox , allegedly owned by Bezos.

However, it’s only one of two new boats for Bezos: He has also commissioned a shadow vessel called YS 7512 from builder Damen Yachts. This support ship measures 246 feet in length and accommodates 45 additional crew and guests. It will also feature a helipad and meeting space and have a vast amount of storage for Bezos’s endless number of water toys, with diving and snorkeling gear, jet and water skis, waterslides, and surfboards among the bunch. Shadow vessels are a growing phenomenon in the superyacht industry and one more extra toy that their owners want to have at the ready, says Nicholson. “You see them more and more now as an add-on to a superyacht purchase,” he says. “They’ve almost become a must.”

There’s no doubt that Bezos will be sailing the high seas in full panache and style come 2022. But really, is there any other way when you have more money than almost anyone else in the world and attract an endless amount of attention too?

Bezos’ too-tall $500 million superyacht finally at sea

Jeff Bezos should have his new superyacht in time for the summer.

The 417-foot Koru left a shipyard in the Netherlands last week and anchored Wednesday off the coast of Spain near Mallorca, where it’s undergoing tests.

The Koru’s excursion is part of the sea trials where an owner puts the boat through its paces to make sure everything is working properly, according to a person familiar with its travels, who requested anonymity discussing private matters. It could return to the shipyard for final tweaks before being delivered.

The three-masted superyacht is estimated to have cost the Amazon founder more than $500 million. Bezos, 59, is the world’s third-richest person with a fortune of $126.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Previously known as Y721, the ship is now registered as Koru and is flying under a Cayman Islands flag. It’s the largest sailing yacht afloat, according to Boat International, and one of the biggest to be built by Alblasserdam, Netherlands-based Oceanco.

An Amazon spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The superyacht’s size has caused a number of headaches for Bezos and its builders. The height of its masts was originally going to force the city of Rotterdam to dismantle a historic steel bridge, De Hef, for the boat to be able to make it to the ocean.

City officials initially agreed to temporarily take apart the bridge’s central section, but Oceanco ended up retracting the request amid public outcry. The shipbuilder eventually towed the vessel out to sea without its masts.

The size of the sails also meant that the yacht couldn’t have a helipad on board. Instead, Bezos and his helicopter pilot partner Lauren Sanchez will rely on a support boat, which is currently crossing the Atlantic with a destination of Gibraltar, according to vessel-tracking data.

‘Project Ali Baba’ Yacht Makes Jeff Bezos’ $700 Million Megayacht Look Tiny

‘Project Ali Baba’ Yacht Makes Jeff Bezos’ $700 Million Megayacht Look Tiny

Image: DMARGE/BOAT

  • Lurssen’s $450 million Project Ali Baba is a 466-foot floating palace, set for delivery in December 2024.
  • This luxury superyacht will accommodate 24 guests across 12 staterooms, served by 45 crew members, and features two helipads.
  • Despite a collision during construction and a change in ownership due to sanctions, Project Ali Baba promises to set new standards in the world of luxury yachting.

Last year, German shipyard Lurssen made headlines with the unfortunate fire and the destruction of a Saudi billionaire’s $250 million USD yacht . But, like the phoenix rising from the ashes, Lurssen’s back in the spotlight with the superyacht Project Ali Baba—a 466-foot vessel that makes Jeff Bezos’ 416-foot sailing yacht, Koru , look like a dinghy in comparison.

A Palace Fit for a Super-Modern Sultan

Project Ali Baba has begun sea trials in Germany, with construction nearly complete and only minor adjustments remaining. The trials showcase a close-up of the yacht’s extended bow, drawing inspiration in design from military styles. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in December 2024.

what size is jeff bezos yacht

At $450 million USD, Project Ali Baba is the nautical equivalent of the GDP of a small country. This aquatic wonder will sleep 24 guests in 12 staterooms, waited on by 45 crew—because when you’re this wealthy, even your help has help.

The four-deck yacht features two helipads—one fore and one aft—revealing the near-constant flurry of high-profile visitors. It also features a spacious beach club off the aft of the main deck and several lounge areas sprinkled throughout, promising endless possibilities for relaxation and fun.

Luxury That Defies Description

Characteristically tight-lipped, Lurssen doesn’t give away many secrets regarding the interior of this yacht. However, reports suggest unparalleled luxury abounds: sumptuous furnishings, sophisticated entertainment systems, and custom finishes redefine opulence. The upper deck is rumoured to be a private sanctuary for the ultra-wealthy owner, with exclusive amenities to fire the imagination.

Built from a steel hull, aluminium superstructure, and teak decking, Project Ali Baba is an engineering masterpiece with great design. With a gross tonnage of 9,400 GT, she will enter into the elite fleet of only 70 motor yachts that have exceeded 100 meters in length. Her MTU engines promise impressive performance, with a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruise speed of 12 knots. With an added 3,000 nautical mile range, no destination will be out of reach.

Ali Baba Superyacht

A Giant’s Turbulent Path

The path of this yacht to centre stage wasn’t all without incident. In December last year , the yacht collided with an internal gate and had a brief encounter with a bridge, providing an early, brief glimpse of the gigantic vessel of luxury.

Project Ali Baba started construction in 2019 and was commissioned by Russian billionaire Leonid Mikhelson, estimated to be worth $25.5 billion USD per Bloomberg . Then came Russia’s war on Ukraine, and Mikhelson wasn’t able to take possession because of subsequent sanctions. Sold while still under construction, the true identity of Project Ali Baba’s new owner remains a tantalising mystery.

Ali Baba Superyacht

The Future of Floating Fortunes

Even as climate activists protest these fuel-guzzling giants and the occasional superyacht meets an unexpected fate , the demand for these floating palaces simply shows no signs of abating. Project Ali Baba is among the ten superyachts in the construction process at Lurssen.

what size is jeff bezos yacht

As a matter of fact, it is estimated that the global superyacht market was valued at over $10.2 billion USD in 2022 and is set to hit $25.7 billion USD by 2032, growing at a robust 9.8% CAGR.

Whether one applauds or condemns the luxury yacht industry, the numbers do tell the story. The rich and famous continue to pump money into these fabulous vessels as part status and part testament to their unlimited wealth. With Project Ali Baba set to rule the waves, the adage is once again proved right that as far as superyachts are concerned, nothing’s too big, too luxurious, or too expensive.

After all, in the world of the super-rich, the sea’s the limit.

Jeff Bezos’s massive yacht anchors next to oil tankers as boat is too big for port

Amazon founder, space enthusiast , and the third wealthiest man in the world Jeff Bezos has a parking problem with his mega-yacht .

At a Florida marina this week it became apparent that the $500m ship was too big to be moored with the other private yachts at Port Everglades.

At an impressive 417ft in length, “Koru” — the Maori word meaning new life or regeneration — had to be moored alongside oil tankers, container ships and the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship.

Port Everglades is a major gateway for Caribbean cruises and international trade, but the yacht section cannot accommodate vessels larger than 400ft.

At just over that length (almost twice the length of an Airbus A380 or equivalent to four blue whales) other accommodations had to be made.

A spokesperson for the port told The Times that it was in an area for energy ships and that when such large yachts come into port, they are docked wherever there is space.

Koru came into port last week from Gibraltar and with three masts is the second-largest sailing vessel in the world after Sailing Yacht A, owned by Russian fertiliser billionaire Andrey Melnichenko and designed by Philippe Starck.

Jeff Bezos's yacht named Koru is seen docked at Port Everglades

While it is pipped in length, it is nevertheless the tallest sailing yacht in the world with its masts reaching 230ft into the air.

Despite its enormous size — or perhaps because of it — Koru has a support vessel, the Arbeona, on which Bezos keeps his helicopter, jet skis, and luxury cars. That 246ft boat is docked four miles away at Dania Beach.

It costs an estimated $25m per year to staff and operate Koru, which has three decks and a pool. The Amazon founder proposed to fiancée Lauren Sanchez onboard over the summer after five years of dating.

Jeff Bezos takes a photo of Lauren Sanchez on his yacht in Portofino, Italy

During an interview with Vogue , Sanchez was asked about her apparent resemblance to the figurehead of the yacht — depicting a woman carved in the style of a Roman goddess with long hair and a flowing gown — after press suggested that it was a carving of her. However, according to Sanchez, that speculation is not true.

“I’m very flattered, but it’s not,” she said, before adding that the figurehead was one of Bezos’ favourite mythological figures, Freyja, the goddess associated with love, sex, war and gold.

She also poked fun at what the statue would look like “if it was” her, as she jokingly made the gesture of having larger breasts.

Bezos and Sanchez recently announced they are relocating from Seattle to Miami to be nearer his mother and adoptive father who are both in their late 70s.

The billionaire has bought two neighbouring properties on Indian Creek Island alongside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tom Brady, and Norman Braman, who owns the Philadelphia Eagles.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Koru,’ Jeff Bezos’s Bonkers 410-Foot Sailing Superyacht

According to the latest Forbes ‘s Real-Time Billionaires List, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is currently worth around $204 billion, making him the second-wealthiest person on the planet, just behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk .

So handing over an estimated $500 million for his 410-foot Koru , the world’s largest sailing yacht , another $75 million for Abeona , its 250-foot support vessel, and then paying the $30 million or so a year to cover running costs for both, should be well within his budget.

Bezos surprised the boating world when he opted for a classically styled, three-masted sailing yacht instead of some flashy mega motoryacht. What’s more it has a buxom wooden sculpture on the forepeak, typical of 19th-century sailing vessels. And since taking delivery last year, he and his fiancé, Lauren Sánchez, have been using the yacht to cruise the world in style.

While secrecy still shrouds Koru , especially its interior and many of its technical features, we take a closer look at what makes it, arguably, the most interesting sailing superyacht in years.

Designed as a Modern Classic

Koru would never be described as sleek, or elegant even. But she does have a classical style. Designed by the Dutch masters at Dykstra Naval Architecture, the boat is distinguished by its towering navy-blue steel hull, snowy-white, two-level aluminum superstructure, sweeping canoe stern, and a trio of soaring masts. Her design inspiration is said to be the triple-masted schooner Eos , built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts in 2006 for American media mogul Barry Diller. And, ignoring the current trend of oversized windows, Koru ‘s hull sides are dotted with traditional portholes with smaller-than typical windows for the upper decks (no doubt helping to protect guests from paparazzi lenses). Little is known about the yacht’s interior design, other than it’s the work of London-based Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi studio. Oceanco’s website describes the interior as a “timeless, contemporary style, with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals and beautifully patterned textiles.”

Claiming the Prize for Size

At 410 feet bow to stern and with a beam of 56 feet, Koru is the largest sailing yacht in the world. Some might argue the title should go to the 468-foot Sailing Yacht A . But that quirky, Philippe Stark–designed triple-master is considered a “sail-assisted motoryacht” rather than a true sailing yacht. Koru is also big inside, with a reported internal volume of 3,300 gross T=tons, that offers room for up to 18 guests in nine cabins and accommodations for a crew of 36.

A True Sailor

Full credit to Jeff Bezos for ignoring his fellow billionaires’ penchant for giant, diesel-guzzling superyachts. (Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently took delivery of his 387-foot Launchpad , powered by quadruple MTU engines packing a combined 23,400 hp.) With its giant, more-than-20,000-square-foot sail plan (including three mainsails and three, cutter-style headsails), Koru has been regularly photographed cruising under sail. It’s also believed the yacht is making an effort to focus on sustainability, from reports of it testing out a prototype kinetic energy recovery system that converts wave-induced motion into electrical energy. The vessel is also believed to feature a hybrid power system with large battery banks that run its systems at night while at anchor.

Its 250-Foot, $75 Million “Tender”

The challenge with sailing yachts, even one that’s 410 feet long, is that it’s nearly impossible to land a helicopter on the deck. So Bezos commissioned a 250-foot support vessel, named Abeona after the Roman goddess of travelers. The largest shadow vessel ever built by Holland’s Damen Yachting, this explorer comes with a rear-deck helipad and hangar big enough to accommodate an Airbus ACH-135 helicopter. There’s also space aboard for a small armada of water toys and tenders, plus accommodations below decks for up to 45 crew and support staff.

Built Under Total Secrecy

Tasked with taking Koru from concept to reality was the superyacht builder Oceanco, based south of Rotterdam in Alblasserdam, Holland. The famed yard, owned by billionaire Mohammed Al Barwani, who also owns Turquoise Yachts in Turkey, recently completed Steven Spielberg’s new 357-foot superyacht Seven Sea s, and the similar-sized Bravo Eugenia , launched in 2018 for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Koru was reportedly first commissioned in 2018 as Project Y721 and delivered to the Amazon founder in Gibraltar in April 2023.

What’s in a Name?

While a betting person might have predicted that Bezos would have given his sailing yacht a more Amazon-connected name, like Prime, Deliverance, or even Blue Origin after his space company, he picked Koru . The name is said to be Maori for “loop” or “coil” and resembles the spiral shape of an unfurling silver fern frond. It’s said to be an integral symbol of New Zealand Maori art that symbolizes new life and new beginnings. Look closely at the wooden figurehead on Koru ‘s bow and the necklace around the woman’s neck features a pendant shaped like the koru symbol.

A Bridge Too Far

As Koru was nearing completion in 2021, word got out that builder Oceanco had approached the city of Rotterdam in Holland, offering to pay for the partial disassembly of the historic 97-year-old Koningshaven lift-bridge, which was too low for the yacht with its triple 230-foot masts in place, to pass under on its way to the North Sea. The city reportedly consented, but the move resulted in a huge public outcry with threats to plaster Koru with eggs as it passed through the bridge. Oceanco withdrew its application and instead towed the yacht to Rotterdam’s Greenport shipyard west of the city, transported the masts by barge, and installed them there.

The Places You’ll Go

Hot on the heels of Koru ‘s handover in Gibraltar in April last year, the superyacht has seemingly been cruising non-stop. It was spotted exploring Spain’s Balearic Islands, anchored off Cannes during the film festival, and moored at celebrity hot spots like Saint-Tropez, Capri, Portofino, and Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Bezos reportedly proposed to Sánchez on the bow of Koru off Cannes in May last year, followed by an engagement party aboard in Positano, Italy with a guest list that included Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kris Jenner, Toby Maguire, and Queen Rania of Jordan. Then Koru cruised the 4,000-plus miles across the Atlantic to Fort Lauderdale for a re-fuel and re-supply before heading to the Caribbean for winter cruising. This summer it was back to the Mediterranean for more island-hopping.

Jeff bezos’ $500m yacht has a 246-foot support ship, lauren sanchez figurehead.

Much like Amazon, Jeff Bezos’ $500 million superyacht offers every bell and whistle imaginable, from A to Z.

The colossal, triple-masted Koru began its career serving the world’s third richest man this week, cruising the Mediterranean around Mallorca.

The 417-foot schooner first left Rotterdam in the Netherlands for sea trials in February. Dropping anchor in Mallorca put its jaw-dropping size on full display.

It also showed the extent of Bezos’ fleet: Not only did the Koru sail into harbor, so did its support vessel, Abeona, a mega-boat in its own right, the luxurious fast-launches used to move between the two — and aerial support in the form of his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez’s personal helicopter.

Sanchez also seemingly serves as the fleet’s mascot, with the Koru’s figurehead, a part of traditional large sailing ships, modeled after her.

The Koru is the world’s tallest sailing yacht. Its three huge 229-foot masts power it to 20 knots. It’s also the biggest billionaire’s yacht which can move under sail-power alone.

What's on board the Koru, Jeff Bezos' ultra-luxe sailing yacht.

The masts are so tall that Dutch officials considered dismantling the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel past the 131-foot span on its journey from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam through Rotterdam to the North Sea.

That controversial plan was scrapped after local backlash, including residents being urged to toss eggs at Bezos’ “latest toy,”  the New York Times reported . The superyacht, previously known as Y721, was instead towed to a shipyard in Rotterdam, downstream of the bridge, without its masts.

Jeff Bezos at helm

Bezos, 59, and the bikini-clad Sanchez, 53, appeared ready for the summer as the pair soaked up the sun aboard Koru, a Māori word for loop or coil that symbolizes new beginnings — possibly a coy reference to their relationship.

Sanchez started secretly dating the Blue Origin founder in the summer of 2018. Bezos then announced in January 2019 he and his wife Mackenzie were divorcing after 25 years , while Sanchez finalized her split from husband Patrick Whitesell later that year.

Sanchez plays a critical role in the Bezos fleet: As a helicopter pilot, she was seen landing on the Abeona. She was also at Bezos’ side when he took the wheel of the Koru.

Abeona

Koru was first seen under construction in 2021 at Oceano’s yard. The company is owned by a fellow billionaire, Oman’s Mohammed Al Barwani.

As many as 18 guests can enjoy the yacht’s three outdoor decks, including one with two pools. The vessel, which has a crew of up to 36, also boasts a cinema, meeting spaces and lounges,  Luxuo reported .

Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez

Every detail is designed for luxury, even down to the masts’ technology.

Bezos opted for high-tech “in-boom furlers,” which store the vast canvases at the bottom of the mast, above the deck. Each weighs nearly 2,000 pounds, but they allow his deck to be kept clear of ropes.

Clearing ropes out of the way maximizes entertaining space, and allows for a hot tub forward of the mainmast.

The yacht is also built for speed. Its three masts provide “one of the largest sail areas ever seen in yachting,”  according to SuperYacht Times .

what size is jeff bezos yacht

The Koru’s original designer, and the identity of its captain, remain secret. Boat International noted : “With the elegant curve of the bow and a bowsprit, the lines are certainly classic, but we still have no idea which designer drew them.”

The Cayman Islands-flagged vessel also has engine power like most sailing yachts.

And while other billionaires measure yachts by size, Bezos’ is only the 24th largest.

Abeona

However, since Koru’s masts rule out a helicopter deck, the billionaire commissioned a support vessel, Abeona, named for the Roman goddess of outward journeys.

In addition to a helipad, the 246-foot Abeona features an extra two staterooms for four guests and as many as 45 crew and support staff.

It’s the largest custom-built support vessel ever manufactured by Damen Yachting. On board in Mallorca were at least four jetskis, two fast launches, and an additional dinghy. Its heavy winch is capable of lifting a small submarine, although Bezos is not believed to have one thus far.

Koru's pool

The “classic exterior lines” of Koru, are reminiscent of another billionaire’s boat: Eos, a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller, 81, who may have inspired Bezos after hosting him on the vessel.

Favored by megastars like Katy Perry and Bradley Cooper — who were Diller’s guests during 2019’s Google Camp in Sicily — the German-built Eos can accommodate up to 16 guests and 21 crew.

It was the largest private sailing yacht in the world when it was completed in 2006. Diller, chairman of IAC and Expedia, who is worth $3.9 billion, bought it three years later. Intriguingly, its figurehead is modeled on Diller’s wife Diane von Fürstenberg, the fashion designer.

But the $200 million, 305-foot schooner is now dwarfed by Bezos’ boat.

Koru under sail

As Koru sailed in the Balearic Sea this week off the coast of Spain, Bezos’ boat symbolically surges past several other tech billionaires’ vessels – including Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s $80 million, 240-foot Dragonfly, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison’s, $160 million, 288-foot Musashi.

It will cost Bezos, 59, an estimated $25 million per year to operate Koru, but the world’s third-richest man isn’t likely to need a loan with his $140.6 billion fortune,  according to Forbes .

Eos

Bezos’ use of sailpower sets him apart from most billionaires, but others are seeking a hi-tech zero-carbon power source: a Japanese billionaire has reportedly commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Germany’s Lürssen Yachts announced in March that they had a hydrogen-powered superyacht in advanced construction.

It declined to identify the future owner of the unnamed superyacht, but specialist publication FuelCellsWorks reported Japanese billionaire tech Yusaku Maezawa, worth an estimated $1.7 billion, commissioned the innovative effort.

Bezos: How his yacht compares to other tech billionaires.

Dubbed Project Cosmos, the 374-foot superyacht is designed by Apple’s legendary Marc Newson and was first unveiled in early March at Lürssen’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany.

Once completed as soon as next year, the vessel is expected to utilize emission-free fuel cell technology to generate power lasting up to 15 days while anchored or to travel as far as 1,000 miles at slow speeds.

Three other major shipyards, including in Italy and the Netherlands, are likely to launch their own hydrogen started outfitting newly constructed vessels with hydrogen fuel cells as of March 2022, with the first models reportedly expected in 2024.

Other megayachts expected to soon join Bezos’ Koru in the water include two Lürssen models, the 475-foot Luminance and the 400-foot Jag, and Feadship 821, a 389-foot offering from the Netherlands manufacturer.

Azzam, world's longest superyacht

But even those won’t best the biggest megayacht in the world, the 593-foot Azzam, which launched in 2013 after being commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates who died last year.

Azzam, which means determination in Arabic, reportedly cost more than $600 million and is nearly 60 feet longer than the world’s second-largest yacht, the 533-foot Eclipse, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Those monster vessels are expected to be surpassed next year by REV, a 600-foot yacht under construction in Norway which will have space for 36 guests and 54 crewmembers, according to Boat International .

Only a few days back, the Y721 sailing yacht was taken out of the dry dock in an unfinished state and quietly towed to Greenport in Rotterdam in the wee hours to avoid attracting attention. In case you’re somehow unaware of the controversy surrounding the $500 million schooner, the vessel grabbed headlines across the globe earlier this year when several news reports claimed a historically important bridge in Rotterdam had to be partially dismantled as her masts were too tall.

The 2023 superyacht summer recap: Jeff Bezos is now king of the high seas

  • For billionaires and their celebrity friends, warm weather means it's yacht season.
  • Jeff Bezos recently debuted his $500 million megayacht Koru, which criss-crossed the Mediterranean.
  • Here's a recap of some superyachts that made headlines this summer — and the famous faces spotted on them.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos made headlines in 2019 for a rare appearance partying at sea on David Geffen's yacht, the Rising Sun , with ex-Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and model Karlie Kloss.

Four years later, Bezos is no longer Amazon's CEO, and he's spent the last few months earning a new title: king of the high seas. As 2023's yacht season comes to a close, it's clear that Bezos' brand new $500 million superyacht won the summer.

Many of the world's rich and famous have shied away from being spotted vacationing on yachts . Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made that mistake early in the season, sparking backlash after hosting a lavish soiree overlooking a bevy of yachts on the French Riviera, just weeks after the Hollywood writer's strike kicked off.

But Bezos and his superyacht guests appear undaunted by coverage of their travels.

Bezos named his megaboat Koru, after a Maori symbol of growth (perhaps a reference to being the world's largest sailing yacht at 417 feet long) and new beginnings.

Koru took its maiden voyage to Gibraltar in April, and a flurry of photographed stops followed: In May, a shirtless Bezos and his now-fiancee Lauren Sanchez — who has a striking resemblance to the sculpture on Koru's bow — took the yacht for a spin off the coast of Spain, before sailing it to the Cannes Film Festival.

In June, Koru made its way to the Italian Riviera , where the couple posed for photos on the ship's deck. Then it stopped by the Italian island Capri, before posting up at nearby Positano, a cliffside town that's become a favorite of celebrities and travel influencers.

There, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, the couple was seen strolling the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Yacht season's runner-up: billionaire Barry Diller's Eos

Another highlight of this year's yacht season was the 305 foot-long Eos, owned by billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, which also had a busy summer criss-crossing the Mediterranean.

Related stories

A staple of superyacht season, Eos' 2023 summer schedule included an early stop in Mallorca , where Diller and von Furstenberg hiked with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King; a trip to Greece where von Furstenberg visited with British Vogue editor Edward Enninful and Valentino cofounder Valentino Giancarlo Giammetti; and a stop on the Amalfi Coast where von Furstenberg snagged a picture with Kris Jenner.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Diane von Furstenberg (@therealdvf)

In August, the ship made its way to Croatia, where its owners dined with Hollywood A-listers Candice Bergen, Emma Thompson, and Jason Blum, as well as Diane Sawyer and Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd.

The Eos docked in Venice to end its summer season, where von Furstenberg hosted the annual DVF Awards — and began furnishing one of her dry-land residences.

Not too far away in Venice's harbor was Maìn, Giorgio Armani's yacht, on which he hosted guests like Sydney Sweeney and Kerry Washington as part of his One Night Only fashion event earlier this month.

Many of the world's other famous superyachts — and the folks who frequent them — appear to have largely avoided the public eye this summer.

"In a world of long-lens constant paparazzi, there is a place for relaxed privacy that many of us take for granted," a longtime superyacht employee, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, recently told Insider.

That's likely the privacy that Geffen is enjoying on the Rising Sun, the yacht where Bezos was photographed a few summers ago — and on which Geffen infamously self-isolated in March 2020.

While the ship has been keeping a low profile this yacht season, it's reportedly been spotted in Capri and Mallorca , though without its typical celebrity entourage on board. Most recently it made a splash in a place not typically known for attracting the world's most expensive crafts: Portland, Maine.
