All about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

A handout picture, provided by Perini Navi Press Office, shows the ''Bayesian'', the 56-metre sailing unit sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy, 19 August 2024

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

One of the world’s largest sailing superyachts sank in high winds off Sicily on Monday, causing the death of UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six other passengers and crew whose bodies were recovered from the wreck or from the sea.

The trip on the Lynch family’s yacht had been intended to celebrate his recent acquittal by a US jury, with 12 passengers on board, including his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and 10 crew members.

The Italian coastguard said the 56-metre, 540-tonne, British-flagged yacht Bayesian sank within minutes after it was hit by ferocious winds of 60 knots (over 110km/h) near Palermo.

The rapid sinking of such a large, modern and well-equipped yacht due to bad weather, rather than as a result of a collision, has raised concerns over marine safety as extreme weather events occur with more frequency and intensity.

Why did the superyacht sink?

The yacht may well have been caught in a waterspout — a form of tornado — because the extreme wind speeds were recorded only in a localised area around the harbour of Porticello, where the boat was anchored about 300 metres offshore when it was struck.

Karsten Börner, the skipper of a nearby boat, told the FT that Bayesian appeared to capsize. He said he regarded the boat as unstable and his comments suggest that it could have been the combination of high winds and Bayesian’s 72-metre mast — the world’s tallest aluminium mast, according to manufacturers Perini Navi — that triggered the disaster.

Even with no sails up, a boat with a tall mast has a lot of “windage”, or surface area exposed to the wind, which can tip the vessel over in a storm. The boat may have heeled over so far that it took on water through open windows, hatches or companionways.

According to Perini Navi, Bayesian had a keel that can be lifted to reduce the draught of the boat — otherwise nearly 10 metres — for easier entrance to shallow harbours. If the keel were for some reason in the raised position rather than fully extended, that could compromise the boat’s stability in a strong wind.

Bayesian

Skippers of sailing yachts with exceptionally high masts typically aim to move out of harm’s way if strong winds are forecast.

Yacht designers and sailors are nevertheless puzzled by the sinking of the boat. AIS (Automatic Identification System) tracking data shows it took 16 minutes from the time Bayesian appeared to started dragging its anchor until it sank. But it is not yet known whether vulnerable hatches were open or when water started entering the boat. Italian prosecutors are investigating possible charges of manslaughter and “negligent shipwreck”.

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, told the Financial Times that Bayesian was “absolutely safe” and said the crew should have had time to secure the boat and evacuate passengers from their cabins.

Should we blame climate change?

Climate change is likely to have been at least a contributing factor in the Mediterranean’s unsettled and sometimes violent weather this summer. The Mediterranean is a favoured cruising ground for superyachts during the northern hemisphere summer — in winter, the wealthy prefer the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean — because the weather is typically warm and sunny, and storms are rare.

Meteorological experts have long predicted that climate change and the heating-up of oceans will help trigger more extreme weather events, including floods, droughts and more severe hurricanes.

Last week, the Mediterranean reached a median temperature of 28.9C — its highest surface temperature on record — and similar records are being broken in other seas. June was the 15th consecutive month that global sea temperatures hit a record high and forecasters predict the warmer waters may fuel an intense Atlantic hurricane season.

Will disasters at sea occur more often?

While design improvements and safety regulations have made even the smallest boats safer, the potential dangers posed by bad weather are increasing in line with the rising number of pleasure vessels at sea.

Last week, a sudden and exceptionally strong thunderstorm with wind squalls blowing at up to 53 knots (about 100km/h) swept over the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, driving several sailing and motor yachts to crash on to the shore. Among those damaged and grounded but later recovered was a luxury, 30-metre vessel made by the Monaco-based Wally Yachts .

The cause was a thunderstorm known as a “Dana”, a Spanish acronym for depresión aislada en niveles altos or isolated high-altitude depression. The bad weather also caused serious flooding in Mallorca and Menorca to the north.

How can boat makers and skippers help avoid more deaths?

The weather in the Mediterranean is often notoriously unpredictable and prone to sudden, unforecast gales — unlike the north Atlantic, where weather shifts are usually signalled days in advance by changing air pressure and cloud formations visible to the naked eye.

Safety at sea depends largely on two factors: the seaworthiness of the boat and the skill and experience of the captain and crew.

Modern boats — Bayesian was built in 2008 and refurbished four years ago — are normally built to high safety standards and equipped with electronic navigation and communications systems, as well as standard emergency gear such as life vests.

Common accidents include people falling overboard, fires on board and accidental groundings or collisions — not sinking in bad weather.

50-metre-wider-motor-yacht-cecilia-for-sale

Further €2M price drop on Wider motor yacht Stern

The 50-metre Wider motor yacht Stern has had a price drop of €2,000,000, listed for sale with Yachting Partners International.

Designed by Fulvio De Simoni , Stern was built in aluminium by Italian yard Wider to RINA class and delivered in 2019 as Cecilia . She was the first and only Wider 165 model built and went on to collect a coveted Neptune trophy at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards .  She is currently undergoing a 5-year class survey which will make her ready and prepared for the 2024 season.

The flagship of the Wider fleet features design by Fulvio De Simoni completed with side decks that protrude distinctively on the upper deck and a vivid orange boot line.

Accommodation is for 12 guests in five cabins comprising a master suite, two VIP suites and two twin cabins with Pullman berths. All cabins aboard this yacht for sale come with entertainment centres, television screens and en suite bathroom facilities.

Stern features a number of fold-out balconies in the master suite and in the gym and sauna area, both of which reside on the main deck. Each terrace is complete with teak decking that slides out to sit flush (so you don’t have decking running up the wall when the balcony is not in use) plus railings that pop up electrically.

The main saloon benefits from multiple floor-to-ceiling windows that provide ample natural light. With the glass doors open to the aft deck, the two spaces become a single social hub on board, with chocolate-brown leather sofas providing space to sit. The wooden floor creates a feeling of flow between the interior and the aft deck through two sliding glass doors.

A television unfolds from the ceiling, rotates 180 degrees to be watched from both sides and lowers itself to reach the right height – if you’re seated on a table in the dining area you may want it higher or if you’re seated on the sofa in the living area you want it lower.

Meanwhile, the upper deck is separated into three areas for sunbathing, conversation and dining, featuring a bar that contains a concealed barbecue, fridge and freezer.

Stern 's top speed is 14 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 5,400 nautical miles at 10 knots with power coming from two 712hp electric engines. She was awarded the RINA Green Plus Platinum and the RINA Comfort Class notations, for ecological credentials and low levels of noise and vibration.

Stern is now asking €25,500,000 and is available for inspection in Turkey.

Pioneering Innovation in Luxury Yacht Design

Italian yacht builder Wider Yachts stands at the forefront of the luxury yachting industry as a true trailblazer in the integration of serial hybrid propulsion systems. With an unwavering commitment to forward-thinking ideals, Wider has consistently championed innovation, crafting yachts that seamlessly blend cutting-edge efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, minimal noise and vibrations and exceptional design aesthetics.

Founded in 2010, Wider has soared under the leadership of Marcello Maggi, who now steers the ship as the head of W-Fin Sarl, the holding company responsible for owning 100% of Wider’s equity.

Renowned as one of the world’s premier yacht design ateliers, Wider is guided by a management team dedicated to fostering growth by challenging conventional norms and unsustainable design practices. The philosophy is simple: embrace change and shatter outdated paradigms.

image of the Wider shipyard inside during some sort of yacht construction

In a landmark move in 2022, Wider embarked on the construction of two groundbreaking vessels: the WiderCat92, marking the shipyard’s first foray into multihulls, and the Moonflower 72 superyacht, a testament to luxury crafted at the Wider Superyacht Hub in Venice. Both vessels are propelled by Wider’s revolutionary serial hybrid propulsion system, a pinnacle of modern maritime engineering.

The Moonflower 72, a collaborative masterpiece by Nauta Design and Wider Centro Stile, boasts dual variable-speed generators from MAN Energy Solutions, each with an impressive 1,860kW capacity, alongside an approximately 1MW sodium nickel battery bank from FZSoNick.

Distinguished by its collaboration with Luca Dini Design & Architecture, the WiderCat 92 presents an exclusive evolution of the Serial Hybrid Propulsion System tailored for multi-hull application. This system harnesses electric power generated by both solar panels and onboard generators, underscoring the yacht’s eco-conscious design ethos.

Wider’s Serial Hybrid Propulsion: A Paradigm Shift in Yachting

Efficiency, serenity, reliability, ecological awareness and adaptability converge in Wider’s game-changing Serial Hybrid Propulsion. A groundbreaking leap into the future of yachting, Wider pioneered hybrid propulsion in the custom superyacht realm and ardently embraced the serial hybrid evolution, now also integrated into their catamaran lineup.

While traditional diesel-electric systems offered an alternative to diesel propulsion, they fell short for short journeys and stationary periods due to emissions. Wider’s pioneering serial hybrid architecture revolutionizes this concept, unveiling a modular and incredibly flexible system primed for continuous upgrades with the latest technologies.

Central to this innovation is the DC-Bus, a reservoir of energy seamlessly uniting and managing diverse components: generators, batteries, electric propulsion, thrusters, hotel utilities, and solar panels. The WIDER PMS (Power Management System), reminiscent of user-friendly gaming interfaces, oversees the inflow of energy—be it from diesel generators or solar panels—directing it to utilities or storing surplus energy in onboard batteries.

At the core of the propulsion system lie battery banks, orchestrated by a Battery Management System meticulously monitoring vital parameters. These interconnected systems balance charge and optimize performance, while generators operate exclusively as needed and at minimal power consumption.

The pinnacle of Wider’s technology boasts up to 10 hours of cruising in Zero Emissions Mode and up to 30 hours of hotel and service system utilization. This adaptive approach significantly reduces engine stress, thereby elongating maintenance intervals compared to traditional yachts.

Unprecedented Comfort: Silencing Vibrations and Noise

Wider’s hybrid propulsion eradicates the bane of noise and vibrations by removing fixed machinery, offering unparalleled onboard comfort. Unlike conventional yachts, which operate at fixed speeds, Wider yachts seamlessly adjust revs based on real-time power needs, enhancing comfort aboard.

Space Optimized, Customized Excellence

The absence of mechanical linkages between engines and propulsion liberates space, allowing for spacious interiors and unparalleled design flexibility. A bespoke power management strategy aligns with the owner’s desires, whether prioritizing noise reduction, high performance, or zero emissions.

AI-Driven Precision

The Power Management System acquires a deep understanding of the owner’s, guests, and crew’s habits, tailoring energy allocation to match daily needs. In essence, Wider Yachts stands as a beacon of innovation, a fusion of visionary propulsion systems, aesthetics and comfort that redefines the art of luxury yachting.

The other model released was the Wider 135, much smaller in scale even than their last launch, the Wider 165 Project "Cecilia". They appear to have done-away with the touch-and-go helipad facet on the other models too as the 180 and the 135 does not feature this. Centro Stile Wider is the design of the Wider 135. Key features include, what they term as a beach club, the side aft bulwarks fold down to further open the space and the deck is fitted with outdoor furniture. There is also a small infinity-edge pool/jacuzzi in the space. For more information: Wider Yachts Via Pantaleoni 60125 Ancona AN Italy www.**************** ***

The WIDER beach club

The WIDER beach club is a magnificent onboard oasis – offering splendid relaxation space in direct connection to the sea – and is one of the most sizeable examples of a transom swim-and-sunbathing-deck available. The side openings, together with the extension of the aft-deck, create a large multi-use platform at water level and the marine experience is further enhanced by an interior seawater swimming pool.

The WIDER diesel-electric propulsion

The WIDER 165 is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system combined with Azimuthal pods . Four inline variable speed diesel generators, combined with the state-of-the-art WIDER power management system and the latest battery technology, serve the hotel and propulsion requirements of the vessel. This system reduces consumption while at the same time facilitating unprecedented range.

The traditional engine room has been replaced by a Power Generator Room , located in the bow. This leaves the heart of the vessel free for larger, more comfortable guest cabins located in the most stable part of the yacht. This arrangement is only possible because of the use of Azimuthal pods which receive power through an electric cable unlike traditional propulsion systems which have shafts.

All onboard energy sources are controlled by the WIDER Power Management System , a smart and fully integrated system which controls the power supplied by the shore connection, the gen-sets and the battery packs, distributing it between the hotel requirements, the propulsion system and the recharging of batteries, as required. Our dedicated partner in this project, and the supplier of our WIDER Power Management system , is the market-leading, global powerhouse, Emerson Industrial Automation .

The WIDER 165 is equipped with an Azimuthal pod propulsion system which affords significant advantages compared to conventional shaft-line propulsion. These include:

  • increased reliability
  • fuel efficiency
  • greater range
  • shallow draft
  • lower noise and vibration
  • reduced maintenance
  • greater flexibility

The propulsion system is also completely modular, meaning the WIDER 165 can cruise using only the battery packs, in ZEM (Zero Emission Mode), or with up to four inline diesel generators powering the electric motors which form part of the pods. This way it can cruise at a higher range of speeds while continuing to enjoy limited specific fuel consumption.

Accommodation

Among the many unique features on board the WIDER 165 is the owner's private terrace overlooking the sea, which opens off the full-beam master cabin. The sizeable guest quarters comprise four en-suite cabins.

The WIDER 165 is built to comply with the latest standards (LY3) for crew. Four twin cabins, a sizeable cabin for the captain next to the wheelhouse, and an ample crew mess. A central corridor gives direct access to the engine room, located at the furthest point from the guest accommodation.

Leisure equipment

Thanks to its Floating Launching System, the stern of the WIDER 165 can be converted into a spacious garage ideal for carrying the WIDER 32 as a tender, although this can be adapted for a client's specific needs. The transom opening hatch allows the WIDER 32 to be housed in the space used as a swimming pool. This system makes entry and exit manoeuvres considerably easier for the crew when launching.

A range of 3,100nm is expected at a cruising speed of 13 knots, increasing to 5,400nm at the ecological speed of 10 knots. The yacht has a maximum speed of 14,1 knots. Also available at Zero Emission Speed, the WIDER 165 can run solely on batteries for silent cruising at lower speeds (5 knots), or for short movements, avoiding the need to start generators to move anchorages or for early starts.
