Charter Focus: Step Onboard 85m Silver Yachts' BOLD

By Jenna Mehdi

Silver Yachts’ 85m flagship BOLD is an emblem of modern-day yachting. Adventurous enough to inspire wanderlust amongst the most seasoned of charter guests, we caught up with BOLD on her world tour as travel restrictions continue to ease, bringing readers a tantalising taste of the charter experience onboard one of this century’s most iconic superyachts...

With a naval-inspired exterior, penned by industry great Espen Oeino, BOLD’s formidable looks cast an equally striking impression in the shallows of the Bahamas as against the rugged cliffs of the Med. Paired with Silver Yachts’ signature technical prowess, BOLD’s remarkably low draft of 2.8m and long range of 7000 nautical miles make her a true go-anywhere explorer.

Yet BOLD’s rugged exterior belies a light, modern and luxurious space within. Appointed by Sabrina Monte Carlo, the yacht’s interiors are clean and crisp; large windows and wide, open spaces give a feeling of even more volume throughout. Teak and oak panelling is seamlessly coupled with metallic painted features and oak and marble floors. BOLD’s expansive upper deck loft with floor-to-ceiling windows and open-plan arrangement is a highlight of her various socialising spaces, leading out into a large winter garden with wrap-around sliding glass panels and air conditioning to embrace all weather conditions. The entertaining deck, immediately above, continues the theme of expansion and openness with glass-backed serveries and sliding glass doors to enclose the marble dining table to seat 16.

Although her open-plan layout is undoubtedly a key element of BOLD’s design ethos, the yacht is not without her intimate relaxation spaces. The sun deck retreat offers guests an eight-person Jacuzzi and lounges, split in half to offer a large settee aft behind windbreak glass and protected by the overhead mast deck. Aft of the settee is another open deck with more outdoor seating and a feature centrepiece.

There are no bounds to the possibilities for adventure during a charter onboard the aptly-named BOLD. Her certified helideck on the vast aft main deck lends itself perfectly to activities such as heli-skiing, while an 8 ton aft deck crane allows the swift launch and retrieval of her vast array of tenders and toys. This highly adaptable space can then be reconfigured into a party deck by night, with added shelter options from a large shade supported by the crane.

Comprising eight guest cabins including a dedicated Owner’s suite, three VIP and four guest cabins, BOLD’s layout is versatile and well-suited to all types of charter groups. Her luxurious Owner’s suite is fully equipped with a his and hers ensuite and private salon with direct access to the exterior decks. Set to headline as one of the largest and most critically acclaimed superyachts of this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, BOLD’s remaining summer itinerary will see her grace the shores of Provence Coast, amongst other West Mediterranean hotspots. She will then make her way to the warmer waters of the Bahamas and Caribbean for the winter season.

To inquire about availability or make a booking, interested parties should contact Hill Robinson, exclusive CA for BOLD.

Whakatāne yacht owner who alleged he was assaulted by council staff warned by police

Steve and Rachel Wright with their yacht on the hardstand at Whakatāne Wharf. Photo / Brianna Stewart

A yacht owner who alleged he was assaulted by council staff at the Whakatāne boat ramp in May has been warned by police.

A recent report to Whakatāne District Council’ s finance and performance committee said both an internal investigation within the council and the police case had now been closed.

“Whakatāne Police investigated the matter and had no significant findings regarding the staff or contractors’ conduct,” the report said.

Whakatāne Police Senior Sergeant Helen Hay confirmed the file was completed and the member of the public who laid a complaint of assault against the council staff had been warned for his behaviour.

No warnings were issued to council staff or contractors following the investigation, Hay said.

Steve Wright laid an assault complaint after an altercation with a council contractor and two council staff members which ended with his arrest and hospital treatment for a dislocated thumb.

The altercation occurred after a council staff member asked Wright and his wife Rachel to stop work on their yacht, which had been on the council-owned hardstand at the Whakatāne boat ramp for a week.

The hardstand is available for rent but must be booked in advance. Wright told Local Democracy Reporting he had submitted application forms before having the yacht lifted into the cradle, but did not receive a response.

Wright said when they refused to stop work on their yacht the man left and returned with two more people who took the power cable for his tools.

When he “fronted up to them”, he alleged he was held on the ground by two of the men while a third man took hold of his hand.

It was during this altercation he claims his thumb was injured.

Wright said after reviewing CCTV footage of the incident police had encouraged him to make a complaint and taken a statement about the incident.

However, he said several weeks later he was phoned by police who told him he was as much at fault as the council staff and contractor and no one would be charged.

Wright said the explanation for what he had done wrong was that he had not listened to the council officers.

He said he had not received any paperwork or documentation from police about a warning. He had understood from the conversation with police that all parties were going to receive warnings.

“We were tempted to go to the station manager and ask for an explanation but in the end we just said ‘thank you very much’ and decided that we were going to close any and all contact with the police and the council.”

Rachel Wright said they had seen one of the men in town recently.

“It just opened up a flood of memories,” she said.

Steve Wright said: “I just got out of there because my anger was rising very fast.”

His dislocated thumb was still very painful, but he had recently been able to resume going to the gym after more than a month off, he said.

“There was quite a bit of soft tissue damage but nothing broken.”

The report to the council committee said: “Police issued a formal warning to the member of the public in relation to this incident. It was determined that communication and approach from both parties could have been better.

“The council staff and contractor involved in the matter have been through a lessons-learned exercise and have also attended situational awareness training.”

The couple’s yacht, meanwhile, has been mostly repaired.

“We’re happy with it. There’s lots of jobs to do on it. We’re excited about where we’re going to go on it.”

As billionaire Mike Lynch's family continues to grieve his death, and that of six others, after his superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily on Aug. 19, they have another ongoing issue to contend with. People reports that Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which had sued Lynch for fraud after he sold his Autonomy business software firm to them in 2011 for $11 billion, plans to proceed with a 2015 complaint against Lynch. "It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion," the company said in a statement on the suit, which seeks damages of up to $4 billion from Lynch's estate.

This means that Lynch's widow, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht's sinking along with 14 others, now inherits the complaint and could be liable for damages that HP seeks. Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and others were aboard the Bayesian to celebrate Lynch's recent US acquittal in a separate criminal case related to the 2011 sale. HP won a seven-year-long civil suit against Lynch and his former CFO, Sushovan Hussain, in 2022, claiming Lynch had overvalued Autonomy by billions before selling it to them. The last damages hearing in that case was in February.

The New York Times reports that Lynch had planned to appeal the decision. Not everyone agrees that Hewlett Packard is making the right move. "Legally they are obliged to act in their shareholders' best interests, but morally continuing the claim is questionable," attorney Oliver Embley tells the Guardian . "And from a publicity perspective it could backfire on them. Effectively they would be suing his widow, and that does not look good optically." Charles Elson of the University of Delaware's Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance says he believes HP would be shielded from a shareholders' suit if the firm dropped its complaint against Lynch's estate. The former owner of Tottenham Hotspur FC has moored his £250 million superyacht in the middle of a town in Devon , leaving locals baffled.

Billionaire Joe Lewis, who was recently sentenced for insider trading charges in the US, has moored his giant blue superyacht in Dartmouth for weeks after arriving in the UK tourist destination at the beginning of August.

The 322-foot (98m) luxury vessel Aviva, which the 87-year-old uses partly as a residence and partly as an office, arrived from Troon, Scotland, to the Devonshire coast around 5 August.

The yacht has been pictured dominating the entire landscape of Dartmouth, overshadowing smaller yachts that are docked in the harbour next to the small seaside that lines the shore.

The scenic coastal town of Dartmouth, situated on the banks of the River Dart, has a rich maritime heritage and boasts independent locally-owned boutiques as well as beaches such as Castle Cove and Sugary Cove that attract hundreds of visitors to the small town.

The town holds an annual regatta, one of the oldest events of its kind in the country, that invites yachts, keelboats, sports boats and dinghies to the sporting event held in its port. This year’s event took place on 29 to 31 August while Lewis’ yacht was also moored in the area.

The giant yacht is hard to miss, leaving some residents perplexed as to why such a huge boat would want to be moored in a small English town that does not offer the same tropical weather that most superyachts are spotted in .

“I love this town and I wouldn’t want to do it down but why does a billionaire want to stay here for the whole of August instead of the Caribbean or the Med?” one lifelong resident told The Sun .

"It’s just a huge floating gin palace, miles bigger than anything else in the harbour. We’ve seen his crew come and go in a tender but I don’t know if he’s even onboard – nobody’s heard anything,” they added.

It is unclear if Lewis is present on the superyacht while it is being anchored in Devon .

Aviva was built in 2017, can host 16 guests, 25 crew members, and also features an indoor padel tennis court, according to SuperYachtFan .

The superyacht had not been spotted around British waters until recently, as Aviva, along with the owner’s private jet, was put up as collateral for bail after the British billionaire’s arrest in July 2023 for insider trading charges in the US.

Dartmouth, a popular tourist destination in the UK, usually only hosts smaller yachts in its harbour

Lewis was not allowed to set foot on the vessel until he paid a $5m fine after his sentencing in April for sharing business secrets with friends, which also includes three years of prison.

After leaving its base in Malta following the sentencing, Aviva set sail to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island Zakynthos and Kalamata in southern Greece, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Along with the padel tennis court, the yacht also includes a helipad, spa and a cinema, and was ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, the outlet added.

Aviva is also home to one of the most expensive art collections in the world, with original works by Picasso and Matisse aboard the yacht.

Lewis made his fortune primarily in foreign exchange and investment before buying Tottenham Hotspur in 1991. He is ranked 38th among the UK’s wealthiest people, according to the Sunday Times Rich List , with a net worth of £5.3bn.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

Two people 'safely rescued' from stricken yacht Spirit of Mateship after major sea operation off NSW coast

By Jesse Hyland

By Xanthe Gregory

Topic: Maritime Accidents and Incidents

A 60-year-old man and 48-year-old woman have been rescued from a stricken yacht at about 7:25am following a major joint sea operation.

The rescue operation was launched when a distress beacon was sent out by the Spirit of Mateship some 185 kilometres east of Nowra about 1pm on Monday.

What's next?

Nemesis is expected to arrive back in Sydney tonight.

Two people have arrived back in Sydney after being rescued from a stricken yacht following a major joint operation on the New South Wales south coast this morning.

The 60-year-old man and 48-year-old woman were greeted by family members at the NSW Police Area Command in Balmain after docking about 6.30pm.

A rescue operation was launched when a distress beacon was sent out by the Spirit of Mateship about 1pm on Monday.

The 19-metre yacht, which has been in several Sydney to Hobart races, had mechanical failure, the rudder was lost and the vessel was taking on water.

NSW Police Marine Area Command and the Australian Defence Force received notification of the beacon by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

The Australian Defence Force ship HMAS Canberra reached the vessel at 1am today, with the NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis arriving two hours later.

The yacht was 90 nautical miles south-east of Sydney when police headed out to rescue the pair, but by the time they arrived the vessel was 160 nautical miles away.

A man and woman were rescued from the vessel about 7:30am.

Rescued pair 'in good spirits'

Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA) duty manager Ben Flight told ABC News Breakfast they still have limited communications with the pair, but they are uninjured.

"They're in good spirits and well," Mr Flight said.

He said the HMAS Canberra was also there providing a "bit of a shielding presence from the wind and the sea to try and calm the local environment down".

"It's still around 50-to-60-kilometre winds and 4-to-5-metre seas this morning so very, very dangerous and trying conditions," Mr Flight said.

"The team did a really good job this morning getting the two people off safely."

The yacht is beyond salvation and had to be abandoned.

The man and woman were taken on board the Nemesis, which is travelling to Sydney.

It's anticipated the ship will arrive at NSW Police Marine Area Command about 6:30pm tonight.

'They're grateful for the rescue'

NSW Marine Area Command Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said the pair were rescued after police launched a smaller vessel to extract them.

"As far as I know just from the crew, they were brought on board, given some food and allowed to go to sleep," he said.

"They're fatigued, they're uninjured and, from what I understand, grateful for the rescue."

Chief Inspector Brazzill said he believed the man had been living on the yacht and was travelling around the east coast after departing from the Gold Coast last New Year's Eve.

The man and woman, who are understood to be friends, left Jervis Bay "yesterday or the day before" planning to head to Sydney before the man left for the Gold Coast, according to Chief Inspector Brazzill.

On Monday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was battling up to 5 metre seas and 70 to 90kph, with the weather conditions preventing rescue efforts from taking place that night.

The operation resumed this morning.

A RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft stayed on the scene until 9pm after leaving from Richmond, but was forced to return.

The Spirit of Mateship has taken part in numerous Sydney to Hobart yacht races since 2013.

Ahead of its inaugural Sydney to Hobart race, then-prime minister Tony Abbott officially launched its name in honour of its crew, made up of injured ADF personnel.
