Zeffiro 150

ISA Yachts line of catamarans just got a little bigger—in more ways than one.

The Italian builder, which is helmed by the Palumbo Group, has just unveiled a new power cat called simply the Zeffiro 150 . The sizable 150-footer, which is the successor to the Zeffiro 130 , marks ISA’s largest multihull to date. What’s more, the vessel is equipped with fold-down terraces to make itself even bigger still.

With a beam of 47 feet, the cat’s generous living quarters are spread across four separate decks. Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design penned the contemporary interior that offers space for up to eight seafarers. Spanning roughly 600 square feet, the owner’s suite is located forward on the upper deck and features his and her bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, a lounge and office. It also opens onto a private aft deck terrace that comes complete with an outdoor cinema and spa.

Elsewhere, there are two VIP suites and a twin cabin on the lower deck, along with the crew quarters. The main deck, meanwhile, offers an open-plan main saloon and a family room with a cinema, games table and bar. Naturally, there is also plenty of deck space outdoors for alfresco entertaining. The 2,163-square-foot aft deck, for example, comes fitted with a lounge, bar and dining table for 10.

The real pièce de résistance, though, is the expanding beach club aft. It features two hydraulic platforms that open to create a bar and lounge on one side and a dive store on the other. It also sports a swim platform for direct access to the ocean. Another standout is the swimming pool that occupies pride of place across the bow.

As to be expected, the 150-footer offers plenty of storage, too, including two garages that can store a submarine, a 23-foot tender and a full arsenal of water toys. Details regarding propulsion are still to come.

The Zeffiro 150 is the second power cat ISA has designed in as many years and signals the yard’s interest in this rapidly expanding segment . In addition, ISA has two GT45 motor yachts and a Continental 80 in build for delivery in 2024.

Christensen 150

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

As the world’s largest builder of composite motoryachts over 120 feet, Christensen Yachts has evolved over the past two decades into a force in megayachts. That evolution is capped by the recent launch of Mystic , a 150-foot motoryacht that not only introduces a new styling for future Christensen yachts, but highlights the innovative side of this Northwest builder.

If a man builds a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to his door. That’s the story of Christensen Yachts in a nutshell. Dave Christensen had a yacht built for his retirement years but quickly decided he could have built it better himself. He did just that with a second yacht, but as soon as it was launched, someone offered to buy it. A businessman at heart, Christensen sold it and built a third and then another, and the rest is history.

Dave Christensen still hasn’t managed to keep one for himself, but he’s raised the bar for American builders and set new international standards. His unique system of interlocking molds makes it possible for each yacht to have a different deadrise, different bow and stern shapes, and a choice of prop tunnels and keel shapes.

Mystic began life as a spec yacht and, as such, provides a clear picture of the direction that Christensen is taking, since the exterior styling was unaffected by the owner’s input. This is not a radical change but a subtle one clearly derived from two earlier Christensen yachts: the 155-foot Liquidity and the 153-foot Silver Lining. The most obvious styling change is the use of the oval shape in everything from the oversize windows in the topsides to the deck stanchions, and the aura is far more European than the previously hard-edged classic stylings.

Though the exterior lines and accommodation plan had been finalized, her owner was able, starting at about the halfway point of completion, to specify the interior styling that includes traditional raised-panel joinery in a semi-gloss cherry, the extensive use of intricately inlaid marble, and exquisite blown-glass sculptures in dedicated niches throughout the yacht.

Other innovative features on Mystic include a four-deck elevator and an impressively large fish tank as a centerpiece in the saloon. Even her launching was unusual, with the yacht moving on a trailer from the Christensen shed to the Columbia River, where a special harbor had been dredged for the purpose. As a testament to the innate strength of Mystic , her keel was used as the main support for the trailer wheels and, though she weighs more than 225 tons, the keel didn’t flex at all.

The décor, by Williamson & McCarter of Portland, Oregon, is an interesting blend of extreme simplicity and sheer opulence. The master suite fills the forward main deck and stretches more than 25 feet across.

Yet the suite is almost Zen-like in its modest décor. Three big lozenge-shape windows on each side are covered by simple, white curtains, the bulkheads are finished in white, and even the headboard is uncomplicated. A built-in cherry cabinet contains the entertainment center on the after bulkhead, and a pair of chairs provides a sitting area to starboard. An equally understated office, with a built-in desk and files, serves as the entry to the stateroom.

But the his-and-her head balances that simplicity with inlaid marble floors, counters and even wainscoting, as well as etched glass on the walkthrough shower surround. An oversize jacuzzi completes this opulent area.

Although the master suite seems unadorned, it does have several interesting features. The 42-inch plasma television is hinged so it can face the sitting area, creating a private theater for the owners. The walk-in closet in the after bulkhead is unusual; the door to one side opens to a far larger walk-in. If Mystic is chartered, the owners can still leave their clothes and possessions in a private locked closet.

The saloon is equally unusual, with a large open foyer by the twin oval-glassed doors to the afterdeck with its table and settee. Just forward, a pair of loose chairs and two sofas create a formal sitting area that faces a floor-to-ceiling cherry divider with the 200-plus gallon aquarium. Created by Deep Sea Gallery of Vancouver, this isn’t your usual fish tank but instead is a true reef tank with living coral. A sophisticated lighting system simulates the various stages of natural light from dawn to dusk, and an equally complex sea-water filtering system provides a natural environment for fish and coral.

The after side of the aquarium is flat, which allows a large plasma television to slide upward, replacing the aquarium view with a movie theater for guests in the saloon. At each end of the aquarium divider are etched-glass display cases for some of the many glass sculptures aboard Mystic .

The impressive aquarium separates the formal dining area, which has seating for 12 under a silver-leaf overhead treatment. Direct service is from a prep area attached to the superb portside galley with gray granite counters and a center island, not to mention expansive views and direct access to the side deck.

Curved stairs with glowing, etched-glass panels lead from the inlaid-marble entry foyer to the skylounge, which, judging from the minimal saloon seating, is sure to be the gathering place for guests and owners. For those who don’t wish to climb the stairs, the four-deck elevator carries several people from the lower accommodations to any deck, including the flying bridge.

The skylounge is unfussy, with raised cherry paneling around oversize windows and a television that hinges from the overhead. An immense couch fills the starboard side, while a pair of chairs with ottomans and a game table are opposite. Just forward is an enclosed butler’s pantry with granite counters, which is used as a prep area for skylounge dining. The real attraction of this deck, though, is the immense covered afterdeck with a circular table that seats 10.

Forward, past hidden rollout cabinets housing more than $300,000 in stereo and entertainment systems, is a day head and the pilothouse, with a leaning post for the helmsman and a raised Stidd chair. There’s a full-size chart table and all the monitors have been recessed in a lowered dash panel for an unobstructed forward view, and wing controls on the Portuguese bridge are for docking.

The teak-plank flying bridge, with a fiberglass hardtop supported by swept-aft pillars, is designed for entertaining, with a spa, a large bar with Brazilian blue-granite counters and six Timeless stools, and a settee to port. The elevator (with a self-sealing hatch) exits near the oversize Lynx barbecue, and the afterdeck is devoted to a fleet of toys (the 22-foot Nautica tender is on the boat deck below) that include two WaveRunners, a Vanguard 15 sailing dinghy, two kayaks, two Vespas and two Yamaha motor scooters.

Guest accommodations are on the lower deck, with four simply appointed staterooms: two VIP queens forward with oversize marble heads and showers, and two doubles aft with en suite heads.

If crew comfort is directly related to owner satisfaction, then Mystic is going to be a very happy ship. The crew quarters, with access either from the galley or the lower passageway, are spacious and bright, with maple paneling and an oversize lounge that doubles as the crew mess. A full galley is near a large walk-in freezer, and a separate laundry compartment has four sets of washer/dryers, plus a built-in press. The crew quarters are forward, with four double cabins and private heads.

Though Mystic was built to stringent MCA class, as well as ABS+A1-AMS, Christensen was able to incorporate yet conceal many of the often-awkward requirements, such as watertight doors and massive fire systems. The engineroom is a crew delight, with a separate workshop with head, another washer/dryer, and stowage for dive gear. The engines are fully accessible on diamond-plate soles, as are the gensets. Other systems of note are Naiad stabilizers with 30-square-foot fins, dual Village Marine 1,500-gallon-per-day watermakers, an Aqua Air 30-ton air-conditioning system and a 100 hp American bowthruster.

Considering the fleet of water toys, the stern has been designed as a mini-marina, complete with a removable padded section to protect the swim platform and even a mooring pattern to organize the flotilla.

Starting as a half-completed spec yacht and finished to an owner’s needs, Mystic is a comfortable and simple yacht built to Christensen’s usual high standards. With unusual features such as the elevator and reef tank, Mystic also provides a peek at future Christensen styling.

The quiet Italian: Inside the Wider 150 superyacht

A hushed and compact diesel-electric propulsion system allowed Italian yard Wider to maximise the spectacular living spaces on its 46 metre Wider 150  and then open them up using super-slick technology.

On a placid grey swell off Ancona, the Wider 150 cuts through the mist towards her tender. Her approach feels increasingly strange, until at close range the omission becomes easier to identify – noise.

A familiar hum is absent; the only sound is the languid slosh of the Adriatic against aluminium hull. When the Wider 150 turns her flank and slides hushedly past the smaller boat, like some futuristic ghost ship, it feels distinctly as if the captain is showing off.

The 46 metre Wider  150, the first superyacht from the Italian brand, boasts a sculptural exterior by Fulvio De Simoni , a clever layout by Ideaeitalia , but it is her diesel-electric power system that’s liable to drive a modest skipper to bravado.

Four gensets in the bow drive the boat via azimuthal pods, while also charging lithium polymer batteries to stern. These batteries, by Dutch company ESTechnologies, power the rest of the boat – or can propel her at modest speed with the generators off.

Some benefits of this set-up are obvious, even from a nearby tender. She is quiet – really, really quiet – even in her generator room. Cruising at 10 knots overnight, with air-conditioning at 50 per cent and zero-speed stabilisers on, an owner could snooze with just 44.5dB(A) in his cabin, a level that sound comparison charts denote as “library”. And it is even lower in guest cabins.

From the bridge, the generators two decks below are almost inaudible, despite the fact they are driving the yacht at 11 knots and charging the batteries. With the generators off, the batteries can supply the entire hotel system on board for up to eight hours or drive the Wider 150 at five knots for six hours — ideal for night-time navigation — in what most human beings would call silence.

Vibration is also low — levels were measured at less than 1mm per second in all areas — even with generators on. The only evidence that you are moving is the seascape sliding past the windows. “When the man came from RINA to test the noise and vibration on board he shook one of his machines to check it was working,” says Tilli Antonelli, founder and CEO of Wider, pointing to the motionless surface in a glass of orange juice.

Antonelli, who guided every aspect of the design, enhanced the hush by mounting the generators and ensuring the cables that stretch the length of the boat are amply muffled, as well as by taking an enthusiastic attitude towards insulation generally (there are about 35 tonnes of it on board).

Because the generators are variable speed and can operate independently, the Wider 150 uses only the fuel she needs at that moment, so consumption is only about 70 litres at 11 knots. On battery power alone, she produces zero emissions. The propulsion – no shafts, just electric cables that link to electric motors positioned above the pods – also had some wild benefits for the layout.

With no traditional engine room to consider, the Wider 150 could be designed around the features the team loved, rather than trying to squeeze these features into a traditional yacht layout. As Alessio Battistini, co-founder of Ideaeitalia, puts it, “the beach club and the owner
apartments were the ideas the project developed from”.

This was an exciting prospect for Antonelli. He began his yachting career as a professional sailor, then founded the Pershing brand, which became part of the Ferretti Group in the early 1990s.

He left in 2010 to try something fresh. “It’s something we wanted to do, to be a bit different from the other players in the market,” he says. “You have to excite the market, you have to offer the opportunity to buy something different from everyone else.”

The Wider 150's tender garage is certainly something different. Float-in garages have been done before, albeit on much larger boats – Lürssen ’s 126.19 metre explorer Octopus , for example, or CRN’s 58.2 metre J’Ade . But on the Wider 150, the absence of a traditional engine room allows a dramatic change in scale.

“Our aim was to make the most of the electric solution, which allowed us to move the [generator] room to the bow and take advantage of the large and valuable volumes of the stern area,” says De Simoni. The resulting dock takes up around a third of the lower deck’s length and allows this 46 metre yacht to accommodate a 9.6 metre Wider 32 that, complete with dining table, mini-galley, cabin and sunbathing area, is more dayboat than tender.

And that’s the point. With a modest draught of 1.98 metres and a shallow pod propulsion system by Dutch manufacturer Veth, the Wider 150 can cruise serenely between shallow anchorages, while guests who want to explore at a faster pace can jump on the 32 and spend a day zipping about at 37 knots.

Back on the mothership, comfortably still owing to five gyroscopic stabilisers, those who remain on board get their own alfresco fun. With the “tender” out, a carbon section stowed in the stern hatch is fitted over part of the tender dock, while sections of hull fold down to port and stern. The whole lot is covered with Paola Lenti outdoor carpet.

The result is a 90 square metre beach club – Wider says it is the biggest available on any yacht available between 44 and 47 metres – complete with a protected seven metre saltwater swimming pool (the forward part of the dock).

When the adventurers return, the beach club is dismantled, the tender slides in, the water drains out and the 32 rests on a base that is moulded to the shape of its hull, “like a foot in a shoe”, as Antonelli puts it. Then the Wider 150 can pick up and carry on for quite some time – she has a range of 4,800 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Living areas also benefit from the propulsion arrangement. “By splitting the technical areas between bow and stern, more space is left for the guest accommodation,” says Battistini. “They significantly increase the interior volumes compared to other motor yachts of a similar size: a 75 square metre, full-beam owner’s apartment [for example]. And everything is conceived to point out the continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.”

Indeed, throughout the boat, the design transforms at the touch of a button, usually in service of this indoor-outdoor lifestyle. In the upper saloon, huge sections of full-height window slide back, making balconies out of the broad side decks and, with the doors to the long aft deck open, it becomes a breezy cabana-like space.

Those side decks bulge from the superstructure to exaggerate the already expansive 8.6 metre beam, meaning the upper saloon can be full-beam, but crew have routing around it to avoid disturbing guests. They are a refusal to compromise – Wider by name, wider by nature.

The master suite, forward on the main deck, has its own technical treats. To starboard, a broad window powers open automatically for fresh air under way. But close that window and a much larger, marble-clad section of superstructure folds out. Touch the button for longer and teak decking slides out from under the floor and railings rise up.

It is an immaculate terrace with decking flush to the interior floor. It looks and feels like a permanent feature, not a temporary fix, and yet it’s easy enough for an owner to erect without the help of crew. Just as importantly since it will be closed most of the time, when stowed you wouldn’t guess it was there.

Transformational tech (mostly by Fratelli Canalicchio and Mak 2) also has more prosaic uses on board, as in the study at the entrance to the master suite. “If someone’s using the cabin and you want privacy here, there is this door,” says Antonelli, pushing a button that slides a concealed door from a bulkhead to separate the two spaces. “When it is closed there are two pneumatic seals, one in the ceiling and one in the floor, so we won’t hear anything.”

Indeed, sound has been considered in all tech on board, down to the air-conditioning and the automatic blinds, which descend inaudibly. But the bridge is the space most kitted with fold-out gadgets and moveable parts. “Because the space in the bridge is not huge we have two configurations,” says Antonelli; “one when the boat is in the marina or at anchor, and one at sea.”

The former involves five flat touchscreen Team Italia panels in a row plus one overhead; for the latter, the five panels angle up to 90 degrees and the outer two power round to form a semi-hexagon around the captain, whose seat folds out automatically from a cabinet below the consoles. “You can monitor all the functions of the boat, but you can also switch different functions to different screens, to have the configuration as you like,” says Antonelli.

Forward of the wheelhouse lies one of a few spectacular outdoor spaces. A watertight section of the forward coachroof rises automatically to create a hard roof with a recessed lounge – and built-in sofas – beneath it. “The covered foredeck lounge in the bow represents an exclusive and private space, where owner and guests can enjoy a nice breeze, shaded and panoramic views,” says De Simoni.

The foredeck also conceals a large garage with a 4.5 metre tender, jet skis, wakeboards, paddleboards and diving gear. Up top the aft of the sundeck accommodates loungers, the central space offers modern blocks of loose furniture in bright turquoise by Paola Lenti, while forward there’s a glamorous glass-topped bar and spa pool.

The deck’s stainless steel railing sits atop a low glass screen containing an LED strip for spectacular parties. Combined with underwater lights, she’ll be instantly recognisable in a night-time marina or among yachts in a crowded anchorage. Further down, the main aft deck is a private-feeling spot for a coffee, while the upper aft deck is the place to eat.

The focus is on these outdoor spaces – as well as making indoor spaces feel like outdoor spaces – and the interior décor reflects that. “It is a contemporary style of clean lines and taut, smooth surfaces,” says Davide Bernardini, Battistini’s design partner and co-founder of Ideaeitalia. “Soft bright spaces with a huge amount of natural light, wherein everything seems to look bigger
and ‘wider’.”

In the main saloon, this translates to full-height windows outside of which sections of bulwark have been replaced with stainless steel rails, for seascape views even from the snug, low seating area aft. The simple shapes and muted tones of brown and ivory are chic and low-key, highlighted with stainless steel mullions.

A huge textured metal panel at the forward bulkhead contrasts the glass dining table next to it, while cabinets are plated with what Bernardini calls “a reverse cast of silver and steel, placed directly on wood”, a thin layer of metal laid over wood and showing its grain.

Forward, the master suite, which takes up roughly the same space as the saloon and lobby combined, has a similar style. It runs through a big cabin with fabrics by Gentili Mosconi Home, a spectacular full-beam bathroom forward, featuring a custom-made wooden bathtub by E-Legno Group and a massive shower, plus a walk-in wardrobe and, of course, the office and terrace.

Down on the lower deck, you can really feel the beam in the en-suite guest cabins, which have a simple, pale, decorative scheme. In the two doubles, a nook with a full-height mirror serves as a compact dressing room – a thoughtful touch.

In the upper saloon, the sliding window sections are not the only attempt to open up the space. Every surface of superstructure and bulkhead that could take a window has one. The style here is lighter and less formal, with flowing white curtains, a silky cream rug and smaller glass table.

Throughout the interior there’s the graphic grain of zebrano parquet flooring, the muted taupe of Roman travertine, Poltrona Frau
leather and pure white Thassos marble.

Crew accommodation forward on the lower deck, built to the new LY3 standards, comprises a bright (orange-upholstered) mess that’s packed with storage, bright en suite cabins and a laundry room. There’s access forward to the generator room, or up via a crew corridor to the galley, near the dining saloon, which has a long window positioned so the chef can enjoy the view during prep.

Altogether the Wider 150 is a clever, lifestyle-focused package and while the Wider 150 was built on spec – she’ll be on show at the Monaco Yacht Show – a 125 version is at an advanced design stage, a 220 has garnered serious interest and a 165 is already in build for a client (and due to be launched in February 2017). That version, however, will have an even larger float-in garage so that forward of the tender it can carry a submarine. Now that’s how to show off.

The ultimate expression of the Pershing thrill. The Pershing 140 is not only Pershing’s first all-aluminum superyacht. It is also the first yacht with a raised helm station directly connected to the sun deck. It is the first to set the area dedicated to the owner on the main deck and is also the first to have a beach area that can open fully on three sides.

The profile of the Pershing 140 displays the sleek lines that symbolize the brand's sporting, competitive spirit, enhanced by such iconic details as the two side wings integrated into the superstructure at the beginning of the walkways. The distinctly contemporary shape of the bow enhances the model's aerodynamics, guaranteed by the mooring cover with an automatic up/down mechanism that maintains the streamlined design.

Pershing 140 comes with four MTU 16 V 2000 M96L 2600 HP engines. The hydro-jet propulsion assures excellent performance levels, both at cruising and maximum speed. Consistent with the Pershing DNA, the domotics and electronic systems are all state-of-the-art and coniugate performance with well-being and relaxation. Three Seakeeper 35s guarantee absolute comfort even while at anchor.

The three large decks and spacious outdoor areas make living on board the Pershing 140 extremely comfortable. The revolutionary stern area architecture is designed to enhance onboard entertainment and is exhalted by the large beach club right at the water’s edge. To offer a personalised and unique thrill, all on-board decorations are tailored to reflect the owner’s style.

The Real Costs of Owning a Superyacht [Complete Guide]

The Real Costs of Owning a Superyacht [Complete Guide]

November 25, 2019 1:00 pm

Owning a  superyacht  is a status symbol available only to the world’s wealthiest individuals and corporations. Although there is no strict definition, the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code is applicable to “motor or sailing vessels of 24 meters in load line length and over…and which, at the time, is in commercial use for sport or pleasure and carries no cargo and no more than 12 passengers 1 .” There are currently just over 10,000 superyachts in the world with around 200-250 new builds delivered each year. The vast majority are  motor yachts , with sailing yachts counting for less than 20% of the total. The world’s largest private vessel, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s 180m (590-foot) AZZAM,  cost $600 million to build when it was delivered in 2013. Eight of the ten most expensive luxury acquisitions of all time were superyachts.

Purchase Cost

Buying a new or used superyacht will most likely cost the buyer several million dollars. Pricing varies widely based on the yacht size, age, and other factors such as builder, guest capacity, speed, range, and more. The market is worldwide and extensive. Any potential buyer would be well-advised to engage a professional, certified broker to guide them in the selection of their dream yacht and through the myriad of complications in making the purchase.

150 ft yacht

Operating Costs

In years past, owners and their brokers would work on 10% of the purchase price as an estimate of annual operating costs, but the vast range of yacht size, operating location, and usage profile makes this approach less useful without giving the question more thought. Building a budget for a yacht requires consideration of the following elements:

Crew – Salary, payroll taxes, recruitment fees, uniform, health insurance, food, and travel for vacation and repatriation are all crew-related costs. A good guide for salary costs is published by Dockwalk magazine every year based on an extensive survey of the crew and placement agents. Using their most recent article as a guide, a crew of eight full-time crew on a 150-foot yacht will cost over $650,000 per year in salary alone. Get a complete crew cost breakdown.

Dockage – Unless the owner plans to spend the year at anchor, then keeping the yacht in a marina incurs a significant cost. Dockage is normally sold per foot of the yacht’s full length and per night, although contract rates for longer periods may be available. High-quality marinas in peak seasons are currently running in the $6-8 per foot per night range. Electricity, fresh water, and waste removal are all additional costs to be considered.

Fuel – The captain or engineer should be able to provide the fuel consumption per hour at any given speed, so if a yacht owner knows roughly how much he wants the boat to travel, then he can estimate the total fuel consumption and budget the fuel cost. There is also the fuel cost for generators, particularly at anchor. A typical 150-foot motor yacht cruising at 12 knots will consume in the region of 150 U.S. gallons per hour. At today’s fuel prices, that’s going to be close to $500 per hour. 500 hours per year will give us the main engine fuel budget of around $250,000. To this, we must also add the generators’ fuel consumption at anchor plus any additional cost for tenders.

Communications – Everyone onboard, crew and guests, want to remain connected to their social media, streaming services, and email. The technology available in this area moves fast and with 5G coming online, near-shore costs will likely come down. For those who want broadband speed while offshore, costs are high and depend on the upload/download speeds required. Start with an estimate of $4-5,000 per month and work from there. Additional communications costs include satellite TV subscriptions, crew cell phone costs, mail, freight, and more. Get a complete communication cost breakdown.

Maintenance, Consumables, and Other Operating Costs – Having considered crew payroll, marina costs, fuel, and internet, the budget will start to materialize. One must take all other costs into account, such as hull insurance, liability insurance, maintenance and consumables, warehousing, safety and survey costs, upkeep of the navigation outfit, computing support, car rental, and more.

Captain of superyacht that sank off Sicily declines to respond to prosecutor questions, lawyer says

150 ft yacht

ROME (AP) — The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, has decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions. James Cutfield of New Zealand is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for a third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors Tuesday. Cutfield’s lawyer says the captain “exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that.” Attorney Aldo Mordiglia adds that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy. Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others.

Prosecutors are investigating the captain of superyacht that sank off Sicily

150 ft yacht

ROME (AP) — Prosecutors in Italy  are investigating the captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people. Lawyer Aldo Mordiglia said James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, is being investigated for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck. Mordiglia said Cutfield will be questioned again by prosecutors on Tuesday, without adding details on his defensive strategy. Under Italian laws, being under investigation doesn’t imply being guilty and doesn’t necessarily lead to criminal charges. Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others.
