Bestevaer 36 review: Start exploring closer to home

  • Rupert Holmes
  • May 31, 2024

After two decades of high latitude adventure on a 53ft sloop of his own design, renowned naval architect Gerard Dykstra created Bestevaer 36 their smallest ever boat for exploring closer to home

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

With renowned designer Gerard Dykstra approaching 80 years old, he was looking for a boat for himself that would fit a somewhat different use to his previous yachts. Yet at the same time he still wanted to include many of the features from those vessels over the years.

Given Dykstra’s background, with successful projects including the rebuild of the J Class Endeavour for Elizabeth Meyer and the innovative Dynarig of the 88m superyacht Maltese Falcon , it was clear at the outset that the Bestevaer 36 was destined to be a different class to other yachts of this length.

The designer’s own brief was different to that of any of the previous models in the well known Bestevaer line. Firstly the boat had to be small enough for easy coastal cruising, especially given the Netherlands’ myriad of small harbours and marinas that are out of reach for larger vessels. Secondly, it had to be able to dry out at low water when exploring areas such as the Frisian Islands.

Dykstra also wanted to retain core features that have become key Bestevaer trademarks. These most obviously include the rugged aluminium construction and enclosed pilothouse, but also encompass many smaller, yet important, details learned from hundreds of thousands of miles sailed in challenging conditions.

Our test boat is jointly owned by Dykstra and KM Yachtbuilders, the long-standing builder of the Bestevaer range. In addition to use by the designer and his family, it also serves as a test bed for new technologies, particularly in the sphere of sustainability, that can subsequently be rolled out across other models in the range.

Don’t judge a book…

Displacement is 8.8 tonnes, making this a heavy 36-footer, yet it’s a relatively narrow boat by today’s standards, especially on the waterline, which means it goes upwind surprisingly well. As a result it has a more all round performance profile than might be expected, while also promising a level of comfort in heavy weather that’s rarely associated with boats of this size.

My first sail on the Bestevaer 36 was in light airs that never exceeded 7.5 knots of true wind speed. Yet close-hauled we made 3.5 knots at a true wind angle just wide of 60°, although that figure dropped to 2.5 knots when the breeze eased to 6 knots. In such light airs the electric propulsion system fitted to the test boat can be used to provide a gentle silent push that significantly increases speed while consuming remarkably little power.

43 of the best bluewater sailboat designs of all time

Which yacht is the best for bluewater boating? This question generates even more debate among sailors than questions about what’s…

We also had a Code 55 gennaker set on roller furling gear. Unlike Code 0s dimensioned for racing yachts, this can be left hoisted without fear of it unfurling of its own accord in normal conditions, making for very easy sail handling, though at only 50m2 its area is rather modest. Nevertheless in light airs we made 4 to 4.5 knots of boat speed with this, with the true wind just aft of the beam.

The following day served up 8-11 knots with occasional stronger puffs, in which the boat made 5 knots to windward, tacking through marginally less than 100°. Unlike many heavy displacement shallow draught vessels the helm feels direct, with positive feedback, making it a joy to sail.

With the Code 55 set, fully powered up in 11 knots of breeze just forward of the beam, and the apparent therefore well forward, we made an easy and consistent 6-7 knots, with the boat feeling rock solid, even in gusts.

Performance is undoubtedly enhanced by the deep 2,000kg hydraulically lifting centreboard that gives a 2.4m draught when lowered. It has an efficient aerofoil section and is filled with lead to maximise righting moment.

There’s an easily replaced fuse to protect the system in the event of grounding, as well as a manual backup system. It can also be locked down when offshore to retain maximum righting moment even in the extreme situation of the boat being inverted by a rogue wave. It’s undoubtedly an expensive setup, but as with many other aspects of this boat it represents money well spent.

Shoal attraction

With the centreboard raised the boat floats in only 0.7m of water and the lifting rudder has enough immersed area when raised to allow some manoeuvrability in very shallow water. The hull dries out with the skeg and rudder clear of the bottom when on solid ground, though the aluminium part of the rudder is engineered to be weight bearing when dried out on an uneven bottom.

It’s an ideal arrangement for many parts of coastal European waters, including the north of Holland, and the myriad of little used small creeks and estuaries on the UK’s south and east coasts where you can get away from the crowds even at the height of summer.

Equally it’s ideal for potentially more exposed locations such as the Isles of Scilly and the North Brittany coast, where the ability to dry out safely over low water adds a completely different dimension to a cruising itinerary. Nevertheless, this is a boat capable of crossing oceans and is engineered for strength and reliability in every respect.

We sailed with a conventional 105% roller furling jib, but there’s also an option for a 95% jib with a self tacking Hoyt boom, which can make for an ideal setup for sailing in confined waters: when the sheet is eased on a reach the leech doesn’t twist off at the top, so the sail retains an efficient shape. Our test boat also had a staysail set on a flying furling system.

Both pinhead and square top options are offered for the mainsail, with our test boat having the 13% larger sail area of the latter. A very deep third reef obviates the need for a trysail and both boom and gooseneck are specced for permanently rigged mid-boom gybe preventers that offer safe and easy operation.

Unusually for a yacht of this size, big-boat style Antal jammers are used instead of clutches. This allows them to be neatly recessed each side of the cockpit. A side benefit is that they’re also kinder to the rope cover, yet in a practical sense there’s very little extra complication in use.

Running backstays are needed when flying the staysail and for boats with square top mainsails once the breeze reaches Force 4. However, the leech of the square top main clears the runners with the first reef tucked in, so in stronger conditions they can be left permanently taut.

Practicalities abound

The non-slip pattern is sandblasted into the deck and therefore lasts forever, without ever needing to be repainted – a very sustainable option and one that minimises long-term maintenance.

On deck stowage includes a very large cockpit locker to starboard, in which the optional range extending diesel generator is located, integrated provision for a liferaft and a small foredeck locker. The double quarter berth area to port can also be accessed from above, for additional stowage or for improved ventilation in port.

Neat touches include big rope storage caves in the cockpit coamings, the fender board that doubles as a seat across the aft end of the cockpit, and a well designed washboard system. It’s perhaps no surprise, given the history of the Bestevaer line, that anchoring and mooring arrangements are excellent, including a substantial double anchor roller.

bestevaer 36 yacht

Looking into the accommodation from the pilothouse. Photo: Guy Fleury/K&M Yachtbuilders

The pilothouse is the star attraction in terms of accommodation and a feature that makes this boat stand out in the sub-45ft size range. A raised seat each side, both with an almost all round view makes this a prime spot whether in port or for watchkeeping in inclement weather at sea. The coachroof extends aft over the foward 40cm of the cockpit, giving some protection to the front of the side benches, but stops short of providing enough cover to allow for sail trimming in the dry.

Ahead of the pilothouse, down a few easy steps, is a surprisingly spacious open plan interior, with a big almost rectangular double berth forward of the main bulkhead, and a wide standing area behind it, curtained off from the rest of the saloon. This loft style interior layout without separate cabins certainly gives a greater feeling of space and light than dividing a boat with this internal volume up into separate and distinct sections. The interior is therefore an appealing space, despite the boat’s modest dimensions and the unavoidable bulk of the centreboard case.

There are lots of stowage spaces, both for smaller items and for larger objects, including good stowage around the forward sleeping area. This is arranged in full length cabinets each side, plus a pair of large drawers under the aft end of the 170cm wide bed.

bestevaer 36 yacht

Open plan accommodation is arranged around an almost 6ft long central table that houses the centreboard case and hydraulics. Photo: Guy Fleury/K&M Yachtbuilders

Unlike the larger Bestevaers, which can be fitted out with semi-custom layouts, the arrangement of the 36 is more rigid, but three interior styles give owners a degree of flexibility without the extra cost of a semi-custom yacht.

Our test boat’s classic interior style has substantial joinery with an oiled oak finish offset by plenty of white surfaces. A pair of circular hull ports each side help contribute to natural light, while three overhead opening hatches also help provide good ventilation. There are also substantial deep fiddles and well placed vertical grab posts throughout.

Unlike many yachts, there’s an opening port above the two burner gimballed induction hob and electric oven. The galley also has a fridge drawer under the head of the quarter berth, a good sized work surface, plus a surprising amount of usable stowage volume, with even space in the bilge put to good use in this respect.

bestevaer 36 yacht

Two raised seats in the pilothouse give an all round view enabling watch keeping from a fully secure, dry and warm position. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr

The aft end of the saloon has space for a classic style diesel or solid fuel heater. There’s also a big dry storage locker under the starboard pilothouse seat, with ample space for foul weather gear. At the foot of the companionway on the starboard side is a combined heads and shower compartment. This is compact by today’s standards, but is well finished and is a practical use of the space.

Perhaps the biggest downside is the lack of a second full-size double berth, although there’s a small double quarter berth aft of the galley. The pilothouse seat above it flips up to increase clearance overhead and facilitate access when the berth is in use.

Best ever for sustainability

Historically Bestevaers have predominately been sold to owners in Nordic countries who plan to cruise in high latitudes, so insulation of the hull and deck is important. In place of the polyurethane employed for earlier boats, the 36 has a 4mm layer of cork spray, applied directly to the metalwork, plus almost 50mm of mineral wool.

Insulation extends over the frames to eliminate cold bridges on which condensation would otherwise readily form and is protected from bilge water.

Hull construction is as robust as the rugged looks suggest, including 15mm bottom plates around the keel, a mix of 8mm and 6mm plating for the rest of the hull, plus 5mm for the majority of the deck, with the exception of the pilothouse, which is 6mm. There’s a watertight bulkhead right forward and a full bulkhead at the front of the cockpit that wraps around the quarter berth.

bestevaer 36 yacht

Main double berth features plenty of stowage and is separated from the saloon by curtains. Photo: Guy Fleury/K&M Yachtbuilders

The boat is currently built of 63% recycled aluminium, a figure that would be higher if the thicker plating at the bottom of the hull was also available as recycled material. The choice of aluminium spars was deliberate given the lower level of energy needed to fabricate them compared to carbon spars. It’s also a fully circular material and can eventually be recycled.

Attention to detail extends even to pockets recessed into the hull for the anodes, giving an almost flush profile. As well as improving hydrodynamic efficiency this also gives the anodes some protection from damage when the boat is dried out over low water.

The test boat is fitted with an Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 electric propulsion system, with a 29kW battery bank that gives seven hours of autonomy at a boat speed of around 4.5-5 knots in calm conditions. There’s a lower priced option with a 14kW battery bank, and the genset can be replaced by a larger 43kW battery bank.

The combined efficiency of the propulsion system and the optional 5kVA Fischer Panda diesel generator is such that the 430lt fuel tank is sufficient for around 72 hours of motoring at 4.5-5 knots, giving a range of 270-300 miles in flat water, allowing for 20% reserve. And that’s without factoring in regeneration while sailing, or solar input.

bestevaer 36 yacht

Small double quarter berth is situated aft of the galley. Photo: Guy Fleury/K&M Yachtbuilders

Freshwater tankage of only 150lt may at first sight appear rather small but the way the test boat was set up with hydrogeneration, ample solar panels and the 5kW generator, and given the fuel tank size, a watermaker could easily produce masses of freshwater without the need to refuel for months.

The builders estimate a 50% carbon saving compared to a conventionally built and equipped vessel, based on 60 days use annually and a 50-year lifespan. And they reckon there’s potential to make a further very substantial saving, but that will depend on external factors such as recycled aluminium becoming available in thicker sheets.

The combination of Dykstra’s vision and experience, along with KM Yachtbuilders reputation among the world’s most experienced voyagers, including Skip Novak who chose the yard for his Pelagic 77 Vinson of Antarctica, was destined to create a stand out vessel of this size. The notes from my final day on board say: ‘A lovely, very well thought out and executed boat for a niche purpose and market. I can absolutely see the point of it, but you’d need deep pockets to justify the cost.’ While the Bestevaer 36 is unquestionably expensive for a boat of this size, KMY is acutely aware of the need to be able to justify, demonstrate and explain where the cost is incurred. Their confidence in being able to do so has resulted in a fantastically rugged yacht for a couple and occasional guests to sail anywhere in northern or western Europe, or indeed further afield. The solid quality build helps give the feel of a larger, substantial and very serious vessel. The designer’s and builder’s long-term outlook also means this is a vessel that will look as good in 20-25 years as it does when it leaves the builder’s yard.

First look: Bestevaer 36 – smallest ever model

  • Theo Stocker
  • November 3, 2023

The Bestevaer 36 bucks the trend for ever-bigger new yachts coming to market, but remains a perfect high-latitude and ocean crossing option

Product Overview

In a world in which yachts are constantly becoming larger, this Dutch brand is bucking the trend, with the smallest-ever model in its 20-year history. It’s intended to offer performance along with shoal draught and the ability to safely dry out on a beach.

These rugged aluminium pilothouse cruisers have always reflected what former professional skipper and renowned naval architect Gerard Dykstra wants in a boat of his own: a safe, comfortable, and good-looking yacht for unrestricted, short-handed sailing. It has been the perfect formula for a lifetime of ocean sailing, high-latitude work and solo racing.

The 36 follows in a similar spirit, but is also intended as a boat in which Dykstra can spend extended periods in the shallow waters, lakes and coastlines close to home that he has not previously had time to explore in detail.

Thick hull plating allows the boat to dry out, opening up new cruising areas

This vessel therefore needed to be a sufficiently compact yacht to easily fit in small harbours and marinas, with the ability to dry out. Yet it still retains all the distinctive features of the brand’s larger yachts, including aluminium construction, watertight fore and aft bulkheads, plumb bow, practical pilothouse and deep bulwarks.

The 2-tonne ballasted centreboard provides a generous 2.4m draught when lowered. This is combined with a big rig to give good sailing performance on all points of sail, including close-hauled and light airs. Yet the board retracts fully into the canoe body, reducing draught to only 0.7m and creating a flat surface on which to dry out safely on the hull’s thick bottom plating.

Like the larger Bestevaers, this boat was conceived at the outset to offer its crew plenty of protection. In addition to seats situated each side of the pilothouse, which has a 360˚ view, the coachroof extends over the cockpit, creating an extremely sheltered area. All lines are led aft for easy singlehanded operation. Generous beam helps to provide good form stability, as well as increasing accommodation volumes. The interior has a flexible semi-open plan layout, with three different style options on offer.

Much of the fit out is with recycled, sustainable and natural materials

The first boat, which will be the designer’s own, is being used as a case study for a transition towards more sustainable production processes at KM Yachtbuilders. For instance, 70% of the aluminium is recycled, as is the insulation, while environmentally friendly and largely recycled materials are used for the interior. It has a 15kW OceanVolt electric drive with sufficient battery capacity for four hours of autonomy. This is supplemented with regeneration and a large solar panel array on the pilothouse roof.

A couple of interesting options are offered for sail plans, including a 95% jib on a Hoyt boom, which makes for an enticing combination of very easy handling and excellent sail shape on all points of sail.

To help make up for loss of headsail area a square-top mainsail with 14% more area than the standard pinhead version can be specified. The standard specification has a very high level of equipment, including the solar panels, electric propulsion package, antifouling wrap, a traditional-style floor made of thermally modified European timber, with heating provided by a Dickinson Alaska diesel heater.

Bestevaer 36 S/Y: robust explorer in a compact format

The aluminium yachts in the legendary Bestevaer series already enjoy almost cult status among blue water sailors. Now the shipyard KM Yachtbuilders in Holland has announced the smallest ship in the range, the Bestevaer 36 S/Y. The design comes from Dykstra Naval Architects and is built entirely from aluminium and, like all ships in the exclusive range, is equipped with an integral ballast centreboard. The flexible appendix can be fully retracted hydraulically into the hull. This means that the ship can also navigate shallow waters and can easily fall dry anywhere on the very robustly built aluminium hull, for example on the mudflats. The rudder blade is attached to the stern and can also be retracted at least partially. It thus serves as an additional support when falling dry, and the ship remains steerable over shallows. A skeg protects the saildrive.

The Bestevaer 36 S/Y is equipped with a two-reef rig from Seldén with rod shrouds. A special feature is the so-called Hoyt boom on the foredeck, which can be used to unfurl the jib on long downwind stretches. The fixed dodger above the companionway is standard and offers good protection against wind and overcoming water when underway. Below this, in the deckhouse (or pilot saloon), there is space for two people, who can sit in an elevated position with good visibility, but are also very well protected and can be quickly in the cockpit if action is required.

The Bestevaer 36 is still in the development phase. Accordingly, the shipyard has not yet communicated the prices. The new presentation video, which has now been published by KM Yachtbuilders, offers a very good insight into the project.

Bestevaer 36 - miniature aluminum cruiser

The Bestevaer 36 is a compact aluminum cruiser that will soon be launched. The first details about the boat from Interparus.

Besteaver's smallest yacht

Many shipyards increase the dimensions of their cruise models with each new model. The Bestevaer shipyard covers a segment of the market that loves smaller sailboats than 15-meter beauties.

The new model Bestevaer 36 was designed by Gerard Dijkstra, one of the most famous naval architects. In addition, the new Bestevaer 36 is the shipyard's smallest yacht in 20 years.

Gerard relied on the following principles when designing a yacht:

- the design should not be catchy, but cute;

- safety and convenience above all;

– unlimited possibilities for cruising alone or with a very small crew.

Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Bestevaer 36 is capable of not only feeling good in high latitudes, but also in shallow waters and lakes. As Dijkstra himself says: “The Bestevaer 36 is a small yacht with perfect handling. This is a very versatile boat. It's easy to travel around the world, but it's also perfect for exploring the local wetlands.”

Chips of the yacht Bestevaer 36

If Dijkstra had collaborated with another brand, we would hardly have seen a 10-meter aluminum cruiser. Bestevaer is famous for the use of aluminum in its boats, which has become the hallmark of the shipyard.

The Bestevaer 36 has a 2 ton lifting centerboard which provides extra stability. In the raised state, the centerboard reduces the draft to 0.7 m, which makes the boat almost all-terrain.

All sail controls are brought to the cockpit, which also simplifies the management of the yacht. The interior can be decorated at the request of the owner, and there are as many as three layout options to choose from.

Also, the owner can order a grotto with a square top. It comes standard with a regular mainsail with a 95% jib.

Ecological solutions and the first building

Due to the use of aluminum in the construction of the yacht, the shipyard immediately had a question regarding recycling. Thus, the Bestevaer 36 70% has an aluminum body, as well as an interior finish that can be recycled.

Also on board is a 15 kW OceanVolt electric motor and 4 hours of battery life.

So far, the first hull is at the stage of fine-tuning and preparation for launching. More video and photo materials can be seen a little later, after the official premiere.

Reviewers, however, have already given their assessment of the new yacht. According to them, the Bestevaer 36 is perfect for solo yachtsmen or a couple of friends who want to leave civilization for a while. For family yachtsmen, “the yacht may seem too austere”.

‘Deeply saddened’: Kiwi lawyer Ayla Ronald’s employer speaks out after tragic yacht sinking

The employer of a Kiwi lawyer who survived the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily has spoken out, saying the firm is “in shock” at the tragic incident which led to the likely drowning of one of its partners and his wife.

Christopher Morvillo, a litigator and partner at UK law firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda are among the six people still missing after the 56-metre-long sailboat sank half a mile off the coast of Porticello in a freak storm on Monday.

Morvillo and other guests aboard the yacht were celebrating the recent court victory of his legal client, the tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who had just been acquitted in the United States following a 12-year fraud trial .

Also aboard the yacht were Kiwi Ayla Ronald, 36, a senior associate for Clifford Chance in London , and her partner Matthew Fletcher. They were among the 15 people who were rescued, along with another New Zealand citizen.

Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are still missing, as are Morgan Stanley International bank chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer. The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as chef onboard, was found near the yacht.

In a statement Clifford Chance said they were “in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident” and their thoughts were with the Morvillos’ families.

“Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident.

“Our thoughts extend to the other passengers and crew and all those affected. We have no further comment at this time. We, and the families, ask that their request for privacy is honored during this period.”

Ronald’s father Lin Ronald told the Herald yesterday his daughter was “very shaken” following the tragedy.

He earlier told The Daily Telegraph his daughter had texted him that “there are deaths, and she and her partner are alive”.

Ayla Ronald is from Christchurch and studied at the University of Otago.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) spokesperson confirmed two New Zealanders were involved in the disaster and were both safe.

Divers continue searching for six people missing

Rescuers and divers are continuing their search for the six people still missing, with efforts focused on entering the yacht.

The local coastguard told media the group were probably still inside the yacht, which sank 49m to the seabed after a tornado hit the area and reportedly caused it to capsize.

A search at that depth means divers can only spend around 10 minutes underwater before returning to the search, one emergency responder told local media.

Furniture and debris is also blocking passage through the yacht, with rescuers reportedly unable to see inside through windows.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a nearby boat, told Reuters that when the storm hit he turned his engine on to keep his vessel under control, and to avoid colliding with the Bayesian.

When the storm passed he realised the luxury yacht had disappeared.

His crew had then found some of the survivors on a life raft, including three seriously injured, and took them on board.

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese are investigating how the tragedy occurred.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch found after superyacht sinking, coast guard says

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — The Italian coast guard said Thursday that the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, said superyachts like these are “the safest in the most absolute sense.”

“First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing into the wind,” CEO Giovanni Costantino told Sky News on Wednesday. "Second, with the structure, the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies.”

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the superyacht’s chef.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

The first glance is surprising: That one in the crane runway at KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum hardly looks like the new Baby-Bestevaer, which is only 36 feet short. The ship here must be bigger.
