The Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT was launched in 2021 at the pinnacle of the cryptocurrency bull market. Yuga Labs developed the Bored Ape Yacht Club. The Yuga Labs team comprised four core members who appeared under these pseudonyms in the early days of the launch: Gordon Goner and Gargamel (co-founders), No Sass, and Emperor Tomato Ketchup, who handled the technical aspects of BAYC.

BuzzFeed, a news publication, broke a story in February 2022 revealing two of the co-founders’ identities. This led the other two core members to also give up their incognito status and post pictures of themselves on X (formerly Twitter).

On March 11, 2022, Yuga Labs acquired the intellectual property for rival NFT collections CryptoPunks and Meebits, giving it ownership of the brand and logo of each of those NFT collections. As of July 2024, the BAYC appears to be positioning itself for the future, but what that future entails is anyone's guess. While funded and apparently popular among a specific crowd, the project has somewhat faltered in finding its place in the market after its initial successes.

What Happened to Bored Ape Yacht Club?

The NFT collection still exists, and there is trading activity, but the NFTs in the collection have dropped in value compared to their highs in 2021. In July 2024, many were priced between $28,000 and $36,000, with a few in the $40,000 range.

BAYC has evolved into more than a profile-picture (PFP) NFT. It has set a new standard and pace for other NFT collections with the various additions and the project's evolution. Yuga Labs has introduced products built on the blockchain as well as physical products from the Bored Ape collection.

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection was able to sell for a hefty price tag of $24 million in Sotheby's auction, proving that the initial prediction of $18 million fell short.

What is the Bored Ape Yacht Club Collection?

The Bored Ape Yacht Club or BAYC NFT bundle from Sotheby's was composed of 101 apes.

On top of that, the auction also sold another 101 Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs for a whopping $1.8 million.

As per The Verge , the recent collection sale from the Sotheby's auction is considered as one of the biggest ever in the world of NFTs in terms of price.

Among the list is the sale of a nine CryptoPunks NFT bundle last May,  which carried a price tag of $16.9 million. Another one is the sale of an NFT collage by Beeple, which sold at the tune of $69 million.

Bored Ape Yacht Club Collection Sells for $24 Million

According to  Cointelegraph , the auction at Sotheby's closed on Sep. 10, with the winning bid at a whopping $24.39 million. The final price of the BAYC collection surpassed the early estimate that started at $12 million.

As mentioned, the Bored Apes bundle is composed of 101 NFTs. As such, each ape carries an average price of $241,000 or 69.4 Ethereum or ETH.

It is worth noting that the average Bored Ape price from the expensive auction was above the floor price of the popular NFT elsewhere in the market.

The data from OpenSea showed that the minimum price of Bored Ape NFTs outside Sotheby's is only around $135,000 or $39 ETH.

Bored Ape Kennel Club Collection

Meanwhile, Yuga Labs, the developer of BAYC, also sold another 101 NFT bundle called the Bored Ape Kennel Club.

However, unlike the much sought-after BAYC, the Kennel Club only sold at a winning bid price of $1.83 million. That means that each NFT from the collection was only auctioned at $18,150. But still, that price is beyond the OpenSea floor price average of $10,700.

It is worth adding as well that the price tag of the Kennel Club collection was still within the early price prediction of $1.5 million to $2 million.

Previously,  BAYC NFT broke the record price last Sep. 8 after Sandbox bought a single ape for a whopping $2.9 million. The recent sale beat another auction by Sotheby's to an NFT collector that goes by the name Robistravelling that sold at a cool $2.2 million.

Apecoin dao approves proposal to boost bored ape nfts, ape ecosystem growth.

ApeCoin DAO has passed a community proposal that would see the launch of an Accelerator that supports the incubation of projects utilizing apecoin tokens (APE) to bolster the fledging ecosystem.

The new AIP-209, which was submitted and approved via ApeCoin DAO’s Idea Proposal system, will incubate and launch community-approved projects that focus on improving the value of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, and other projects that use ApeCoin.

The "Ape Accelerator" aims to engage the ApeCoin community as initiators, voters, and participants. Initiators can submit proposals for projects to be incubated, while voters can use their APE tokens to vote on whether the proposed projects should be launched. Participants will be able to support approved projects by purchasing NFTs and other yet-unspecified tokens.

Projects which finally launch on the Accelerator will utilize apecoin – which may ultimately accrue value for the tokens are they generate revenue and returns for holders.

ApeCoin was initially issued as a governance token by creator Yuga Labs to holders of the popular BAYC NFT collection, which is composed of 10,000 unique images of cartoon apes that sell at $83,000 apiece as of Thursday.

These tokens find use in other Yuga Labs projects, such as Otherside , Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) CryptoPunks, MeeBits and Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) – all popular and influential NFT collections.

The launchpad within Ape Accelerator will initially operate on the Ethereum network and feature a tiered structure for participation, based on users' APE stakes and qualifying NFT holdings.
