THE HISTORY
Canada II is generally regarded as being the fastest light air 12 Metre Class sailboat in the world.
Canada II was designed by Bruce Kirby and built by McConnel Marine in 1982, and competed in the 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup as Canada I. In between the ’83 and ’87 competitions she was radically redesigned, being extended both in her bow and stern, given the addition of a winged keel, and rechristened Canada II. She went on to serve as Western Canada’s challenge for the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup under the flag of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. She is extremely fast, agile and tough to beat during every 12 Metre Regatta race!

Canadian dead, several others missing after superyacht capsizes off Sicilian coast
Mother who survived held 1-year-old daughter above waves until rescue.
Canadian dead, others missing after superyacht sinks near Sicily
Social sharing.
A Canadian man has died after a luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the coast of Sicily early on Monday, local officials said.
The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.
Eyewitnesses said the superyacht vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Fifteen people escaped before it went down, including a one-year-old girl.
The Palermo Port Authority told CBC News officials recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-born man who had been living in Antigua. He had been the ship's on-board cook.
Some media, including CBC, had earlier mistakenly reported his name as Thomas Recaldo or Ricardo Thomas.
Global Affairs Canada said it was "aware of reports" Canadian citizen had died.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event," it said in a statement.
- What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast
Six other people were missing after the sinking, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his teenage daughter Hannah and Jonathan Bloomer, president of Morgan Stanley International, La Republicca reported.
The Italian coast guard said those who were missing had British, American and Canadian nationalities.
'The ship behind us was gone'
"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coast guard official in the Sicilian capital Palermo told Reuters.
Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency said a mini tornado known as a waterspout that forms above the water had struck the area overnight.
Eight of the 15 people rescued were transferred to local hospitals. All were in a stable condition, local media reported.
One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, said she had momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother.
The father, James Emsley, also survived, Cocina said.
The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the storm hit, he turned the engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.
"We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner told journalists.
He said that his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured, and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.
'The ship behind us was gone,' says captain who rescued yacht passengers
Mother saves 1-year-old daughter.
The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008.
The luxury ship has an aluminum hull and can carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.
It was owned by a firm called Revtom Limited, according to the shipspotting.com website. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.
'It was a big disaster,' boater says of storm that capsized luxury yacht
Cocina of the civil protection agency said Bacares was among those rescued, but it wasn't immediately clear if she required hospital treatment.
Lynch, 59, is one of Britain's best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country's largest software firm, Autonomy, from his groundbreaking research at Cambridge University. His PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on one of the mathematical theories of English statistician Thomas Bayes, after whom the yacht was named.
Lynch sold the firm to HP in a multibillion-dollar deal in 2011, before the transaction unravelled spectacularly following the acquisition, with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud.
Lynch spent much of the last decade in court defending his name. He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June after he spent more than a year living effectively under house arrest.
In a grim coincidence, one of his co-defendants in the U.S. fraud trial, Autonomy's former vice-president of finance Stephen Chamberlain, was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning, two days before the Bayesian capsized. He was placed on life support and died Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke with Reuters.
Divers find wreckage
The coast guard said divers were inspecting the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation to look into what had gone wrong.
Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, which had lifted the temperature of the Mediterranean sea to record levels, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 C, which is almost three degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," said meteorologist Luca Mercalli.
"We can't say that this is all due to global warming, but we can say that it has an amplifying effect."
The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor," according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.
A U.K. Foreign Ministry spokesperson said British officials were in contact with local authorities over the capsizing and were ready to provide consular support for Britons who were affected.

Transport Canada takes unprecedented action to keep boat passengers safe
From: Transport Canada
News release
Today, the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced that Transport Canada has taken unprecedented action to put an end to serious violations of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 concerning unlicensed passenger vessels. This action underscores Transport Canada’s commitment to enforcing marine safety and protecting Canadians.
August 21, 2024 Montréal, Quebec Transport Canada
Keeping Canadians safe is Transport Canada’s top priority.
In Canada, all vessels that provide a paid service to carry passengers must be registered as passenger vessels and meet applicable safety requirements. Furthermore, vessels carrying passengers in non-compliance with the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 may be subject to an Administrative Monetary Penalty of up to $250,000 related to safety deficiencies.
Transport Canada is aware of the rising trend in pleasure craft operators offering transportation to paying passengers without first registering their vessel as a passenger vessel and ensuring they comply with applicable safety requirements. This is why Transport Canada has increased its level of oversight activity by allocating additional resources to enhance the monitoring of these activities. Transport Canada is also conducting outreach to ensure vessel owners are aware of their obligations.
As a result of this recent increase in activity, the department recently took the following action:
- On August 3, 2024, Transport Canada seized the JAG vessel in Boucherville, Québec. The vessel was found to be in non-compliance with several key requirements of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, including a lack of firefighting, fire detection, fire protection, and life-saving equipment, as well as the absence of lifejackets and certification. Despite repeated warnings and opportunities to correct these issues, the vessel’s owner failed to meet the necessary safety and operational standards.
- In addition to the seizure of the JAG , a number of other vessels have been detained through recent oversight efforts while their non-compliances are resolved.
Transport Canada will continue to rigorously enforce all applicable laws and regulations to ensure the safety of all Canadians. We remind all vessel owners and operators to follow the rules and maintain the standards required by law. Similarly, we invite all customers to request a copy of the vessel’s safety certificate from the operator before they embark on a vessel.
“All vessels carrying Canadians and tourists must meet Transport Canada’s safety standards. Non-compliance will never be tolerated.” The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez Minister of Transport
Quick facts
The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 , is designed to ensure that all vessels operating in Canadian waters adhere to strict safety and environmental regulations. Our priority is to protect lives, property, and the marine environment.
In Canada, it is not permitted to offer the carriage of passengers for remuneration on a pleasure craft. Consult Ship Safety Bulletin No. 19/2024 for more information.
All vessels carrying passengers for remuneration must be registered as passenger vessels. A duly registered vessel obtains an official number from Transport Canada. This number can be either a series of 6 digits (example: 876543), or a 5-digit number preceded by the letter C and ending with the province code (example: C12345QC). You can check these official numbers on the Transport Canada website, using the Vessel Registration Query System .

Canada forces arbitration in freight train labor dispute to avert economic crisis. Union cries foul
Freight trains in Canada could be running again within days after the government forced the country's two major railroads into arbitration with their labor union Thursday, a move aimed at averting potentially dire economic consequences across the country and in the U.S. if the trains are sidelined for a long period.
By ROB GILLIES and JOSH FUNK
TORONTO — Freight trains in Canada could be running again within days after the government forced the country's two major railroads into arbitration with their labor union Thursday, a move aimed at averting potentially dire economic consequences across the country and in the U.S. if the trains are sidelined for a long period.
The government's action came more than 16 hours after Canadian National and CPKC locked out workers over a labor agreement impasse. Both railroads said they would work to get trains moving again as soon as possible.
The union representing 10,000 engineers, conductors and dispatchers responded angrily to the order, accusing the railroads of intentionally creating a crisis to force the government to intervene. It also said it would keep its picket lines in place while reviewing the decision.
The government ordered the railroads into arbitration with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference to end the lockout that began at 12:01 a.m. Thursday after the two sides were unable to resolve the contract dispute.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the decision to order the arbitration at a news conference Thursday. MacKinnon said he expects the trains will resume moving within days. Ending the lockouts is the first step.
The arbitration process was moving quickly, with the railroads meeting with the Canada Industrial Relations Board on Thursday night, according to a person familiar with the schedule who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss it. The Teamsters confirmed that the union was also meeting with the board Thursday night.
Throughout the day Thursday, both sides negotiated unsuccessfully while workers picketed outside and business groups urged the government to force the arbitration.
Teamsters Canada Rail Conference President Paul Boucher criticized the government's decision to step in so soon.
''The two major railways in Canada manufactured this crisis, took the country hostage, and manipulated the government to once again disregard the rights afforded to working-class Canadians," Boucher said. ''The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) is deeply disappointed by this shameful decision.''
The railroad companies hailed the decision, saying the government had no choice.
''The Canadian government has recognized the immense consequences of a railway work stoppage for the Canadian economy, North American supply chains and all Canadians,'' said Keith Creel, CPKC President and CEO. ''The government has acted to protect Canada's national interest. We regret that the government had to intervene because we fundamentally believe in and respect collective bargaining; however, given the stakes for all involved, this situation required action.''
MacKinnon said the government wanted to give negotiations every chance to succeed, but ultimately the economic risk was too great to allow the lockouts to continue. He had declined to order arbitration a week ago.
''Canada's economy cannot wait for an agreement that has been delayed for a very long time and when there is a fundamental disagreement between the parties,'' he said.
All of Canada's freight handled by rail — worth more than $1 billion Canadian (US$730 million) a day and adding up to more than 375 million tons of freight last year — stopped Thursday along with rail shipments crossing the U.S. border. About 30,000 commuters in Canada were also affected because their trains use CPKC's lines. CPKC and CN's trains continued operating in the U.S. and Mexico during the lockout.
Many companies in both countries and across all industries rely on railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products, so they were concerned about a crisis without regular rail service. Billions of dollars of goods move between Canada and the U.S. via rail each month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Trudeau decided not to force the parties into binding arbitration before the deadline passed for fear of offending unions and the leftist NDP party that his government relies on for support to remain in power, but he ultimately decided he didn't have a choice.
''Collective bargaining is always the best way forward. When that is no longer a foreseeable option — when we are facing serious consequences to our supply chains and the workers who depend on it — governments must act,'' Trudeau said.
Most businesses probably have enough supplies on hand and room to store finished products to withstand a brief disruption. But ports and other railroads would have quickly become clogged with stranded shipments that Canadian National and CPKC won't pick up.
Many companies made supply chain changes after the COVID-19 pandemic that can help them withstand a short disruption, said Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau. The real trouble starts if it drags on, he said.
Most previous Canadian rail stoppages have only lasted a day or two and usually involved only one of the big railroads, but some have stretched as long as eight or nine days. The impact was magnified this time because both railroads had stopped.
''They are so integrated and tied into the economy," Windau said. ''Just the breadth of products that they haul. ... Ultimately, I think we need the rails to continue to be running.''
Chemical businesses and food distributors would have been the first to be affected. The railroads stopped accepting new shipments of hazardous materials and perishable goods as they began gradually shutting down last week, but most chemical plants had said they would be OK for about a week.
The auto industry also may have seen problems quickly because it relies on just-in-time shipments, with significant cross-border deliveries of engines, parts and finished vehicles. Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association, posted on X that about four of every five cars made in Canada are exported to the U.S. almost exclusively by rail. He said a prolonged lockout could cause temporary work stoppages similar to the impact of the five-day 2022 Ambassador Bridge blockade.
More than 30,000 commuters in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal were the first to feel the pain of the lockouts and they may be stuck taking the bus again Friday. Their commuter trains aren't able to operate while CPKC dispatchers are locked out.
CN had been negotiating with the Teamsters for nine months while CPKC had been trying to reach an agreement for a year, the union said.
The Canadian negotiations are stuck on issues related to the way rail workers are scheduled and concerns about rules designed to prevent fatigue and provide adequate rest to train crews. Both railroads had proposed shifting away from the existing system, which pays workers based on the miles in a trip, to an hourly system that they said would make it easier to provide predictable time off. The union said it doesn't want to lose hard-fought fatigue protections.
The railroads said their contract offers have included raises consistent with recent deals in the industry. Engineers already make about $150,000 a year on Canadian National while conductors earn $120,000, and CPKC says its wages are comparable.
Funk reported from Omaha, Nebraska. Associated Press writer Aamer Madhani in Buellton, California, contributed to this report.

The Trumptilla sails again: Trump, like Santa, gets boat parade treatment in South Florida
We here in South Florida have two boat parade seasons.
You’ve got your holiday ones during Christmas season and your Donald Trump ones during election season.
Both involve squadrons of boaters cruising down the Intracoastal Waterway in their vessels in celebration of a fat guy with an absent wife, a guy who promises to accomplish the impossible in just one day or night.
One is a ridiculous fictional character and the other is Santa Claus.
A good way to tell the difference between the two parades is If you hear three “ho’s” coming from the people on the boat, it’s probably the Santa parade. For any other combination of “ho's,” it’s the Trump parade.
We are now in peak Trump boat-parade season. There was a big one last Sunday from Jupiter to Peanut Island, a veritable “Trumptilla,” as it is called.
Scores of boats cruised from the Jupiter Inlet to Peanut Island with their Vanilla ISIS flags flying, Lee Greenwood and The Village People blasting from the onboard stereos, and in one case, a life-sized statue on the bow of Trump with his fist in the air.
I guess that’s now the Trump equivalent of Rudolph the reindeer guiding Santa’s sleigh, but instead of the red nose, you’ve got the bloody ear.
I doubt this ramshackle Trump navy works as a persuasive tool for undecided voters, especially those in their cars waiting at raised drawbridges for the promenading yachts to pass by.
But it’s probably good therapy for the participants and their “Merry insurrection” messaging. If it keeps them from joining a local militia, I’m all for it.
Somebody who posts on X under the name “God Wins” made the fantastical declaration that more than 2,000 boats were in the weekend boat parade in Palm Beach County.
Which doesn’t go far enough. To get full credit in the cult, you also have to believe that thousands of other Trump boats were waiting to get into the boat parade but were being kept outside the Intracoastal by the corrupt Soros-backed deep-channel authorities.
“The left could only DREAM of having this level of support!” God Wins wrote.
That’s true. It’s safe to say that Democrats are way behind in the boat-vote parading here in Florida.
But it’s not because the Dems are floatation deniers. They just don’t see the need to create an alternative Santa Claus event.
Meanwhile, I’d expect Republicans to step up their boat campaigning, especially if Trump continues to slip in the polls here in Florida and elsewhere.
I’d look for Trump to start talking about a “no tax on bait” initiative. Or maybe his running mate, JD Vance, could advance the idea that people ought to get extra votes for each of their boats — except maybe for childless women with catamarans.
But absent that, I don’t see how these boat parades help drive Trump’s campaign theme.
On the stump, Trump keeps talking about how in the three years since he left office, the United States has devolved into a “third-world country” where people can no longer afford to eat bacon due to inflation, and gasoline is nearing the fictional price of $9 a gallon.
Nothing cuts the notion of a depression-bent America more than a Sunday boat parade, the ultimate visual display of those with excess discretionary incomes and expensive leisurely pursuits.
(I’ve got an idea: How about a formation of Gulfstream private jets doing a fly-by next weekend?)
Cerabino: Affordable ‘military’ parade for Trump in Palm Beach County
Grand Grift Mar-a-Lago: Online gamer interviews Trump, gives him Rolex,Tesla Cybertruck
I believe if we were in a third-world nation, those boats in the Trump parade would be full of poor folks trying to land ashore in Canada, not a bunch of White-Claw-drinking self-described patriots looking to drop anchor off Peanut Island and ogle each other’s Trump-worship paraphernalia.
The Trumptilla participants do look happy but that might also be a mirage.
Republican voters are far less happy than Democratic voters this time around, according to a new Florida Atlantic University and Mainstreet Research USA poll.
The poll found that 80 percent of voters who said they intended to vote for the Democratic candidate for president, Vice President Kamala Harris, said they were happy. Meanwhile, just 57 percent of Trump voters said they were happy.
What’s the answer to this happiness deficit?
To paraphrase the police chief in the movie, Jaws , “You’re gonna need a bigger boat parade.”
