We are proud to announce the sale of an Azimut Grande Trideck. Sold to a buyer here in New Zealand, this luxurious superyacht is scheduled for delivery towards the end of 2024.

We're Moving!!

Pinnacle Marine European Ltd (Azimut Yachts NZ) will be relocating to Beaumont Street, Auckland Central in the coming weeks. This is an important step for our business and a big change for us, so we want to keep our clients and friends up to date with our move.

The new office space will be a great new home for us and the business. It will give us modern co-working areas, more social space and much easier access for our clients.

The office is located just a short walk from the Viaduct precinct and Auckland Marine hub – there's plenty of street parking and it's close to marine shops, cafes, restaurants and green spaces nearby. Overall, this will be a positive move.

There will be a short period where we'll be working remotely, our staff are available via email or phone at any time, please watch this space for our new office opening details.

Cruising Ground: Cruising Guide: Marlborough Sounds

French pass to kaikoura.

A glance at the map of the Marlborough Sounds is enough get any boatie salivating. You want BAYS? We got heaps. Miles and miles of deep water coastline. You want ISLANDS? We got about a million down here. Think you can NAVIGATE? We’ll soon get you lost…

The entrance to the Marlborough Sounds is Picton. Picton is the South Island terminal for all of the inter island ferries, meaning that anyone travelling the country by road must pass through it. Every three or four hours the roads out of Picton rumble and quake for a few minutes as another shipload of vehicles is disgorged. Arrivals are somewhat more staggered with nervous, punctual and finally high speed travellers taking their places in the queues at the main wharf.

If you have only half an hour before your ferry leaves, the fringes of the main wharf accommodate a series of jetties for charter vessels and a few visiting boats. A stroll around here is much more fun than gobbling pies and bad coffee in the terminus cafe.

Our super yacht "Tawaki" is an 81foot Dyna Laguna charter boat. We specialise in boat parties and luxury boat charters, be they corporate functions , birthday parties or luxury cruises .

We have over ten years experience in the charter boat industry, and our Skipper Steve knows the Hauraki Gulf like the back of his hand. Whatever charter you're looking for, Tawaki is the boat for you.

Spacious Interior

Tawaki has a spacious interior capable of hosting up to 45 guests, even if the forecast is showing rain.

There are five luxury cabins, each with an ensuite, capable of hosting ten people for extended multi-day charters.

Our main saloon features a 60inch HD television, complete with satellite TV. So if you're worried about missing the big game... Tawaki has got you covered.

Gourmet Kitchen

Tawaki features a state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen. Many of our boat charters opt for a private chef, and there is no limit to what we can provide in terms of food and catering.

We have a deluxe industrial outdoor BBQ, which makes for a great dining experience when we're anchored off Waiheke Island, frying fresh scallops.

Tender and Water Sports

Tawaki has a 10metre, crane-lifted, tender on board. This allows us to take guests water skiing, wake boarding and tubing (biscuiting). We can also ferry guests ashore to explore deserted beaches or Waiheke wineries.

The use of this tender and all water sports are included with your boat charter.

The Bay of Islands has traditionally been the main focus of New Zealand yacht charters.  Since the hosting of the America's Cup by New Zealand, however, Auckland has increasingly become recognized as a prominent yachting and yacht charter location.

The 'City of Sails', as Auckland is fondly known, sits against the backdrop of the sparkling Waitemata harbor. Auckland is the base for sailing the magnificent Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel Peninsular. Between the two, there are 1500 miles of coastline to explore on a sailing charter. The Hauraki Gulf provides excellent year round sailing conditions with comfortable temperatures and average wind strengths of 10-25 knots. Peppered with over 80 islands within short sailing distance, the Hauraki Gulf is a palate of gorgeous scenery. The landscape of each island is idyllic and refreshingly different. With scarlet Pohutukawa flowers set against white sands, charming villages, vineyards and lush dark forests, the Hauraki Gulf has plenty on offer for yacht charters.

Some of the most visited islands on sailing charters include Rangitoto, Kawau, Waiheke, Oneroa, Pakatoa and New Zealand's largest offshore island - the Great Barrier Island.

The island highlights include:

• Rangitoto Island - home to New Zealand's youngest volcano and the closest island to Auckland city. It has an amazing volcanic landscape covered by moss, plants and trees including the largest Pohutukawa forest in the world. It has been a Recreation Reserve since 1890. The hike to the summit rewards you with stunning views of the Hauraki Golf.
• Kawau Island - scattered with native walking tracks and home to the historic Mansion House. Kawau Island has many safe anchorages.
• Waiheke Island - a gorgeous blend of local craft shops, cafes, restaurants and award winning wineries. The coast is blessed with golden sandy beaches and sheltered anchorages.
• Great Barrier Island - The natural harbor is comprised of many sheltered bays and inlets. The island is racked in historical sites such as the whaling station, kauri dams, gold and copper mines and ancient shipwrecks. The golden sandy beaches and native bush walking tracks make it an outdoor paradise. Great Barrier Island is a popular snorkeling, diving and fishing retreat.

The Coromandel too, features many enchanting beaches and bays. On a sailing charter or a powerboat you'll find limitless secluded harbours and uninhabited islands to enjoy.

Nicknamed the ‘City of Sails’ , Auckland floats on two glittering harbors, Waitemata and Manukau, both of which are gloriously sprinkled with ferries, sailing boats and luxury yachts voyaging to waterside towns and nearby islands in the Hauraki Gulf.  

Lush walking trails, golden sand beaches and unspoiled islands are all within easy reach, but it’s certainly worth planning a few days into your luxury yacht charter itinerary to explore New Zealand’s largest city.

Auckland, after all, regularly ranks as one of the world’s most liveable cities. With 48 volcanic hills scattered about, a dynamic dining scene, museums, art galleries and designer shops, there is much to keep you and your charter party entertained.  

Beautiful coastlines, boutique wineries and a blissed-out bohemian vibe make Waiheke an ideal island escape for yacht-goers, wine-lovers and free spirits alike.

Not far from Auckland, in the Hauraki Gulf, the 20-kilometer-long island is blessed with its own warm, dry microclimate. Emerald waters lap at rocky bays on the island’s landward side, while its ocean flank has some of the best sandy beaches in the region.

Around 30 wineries, many with tasting rooms and swanky restaurants, dot the island alongside quirky art galleries and craft stores. Those with a more adventurous disposition, however, will be satisfied with the hiking, kayaking and zip-lining opportunities.

The Coromandel Peninsula juts into the Pacific Ocean just 55 kilometres east of Auckland but feels like a world away. Sparsely populated and undeveloped, this place offers New Zealand yacht charter guests some serious seclusion as well as some spectacular scenery.

On its eastern side, a wild stretch of rugged coastline is dotted with dreamy white sands. Not to be missed are Cathedral Cove, a picturesque marine reserve, and Hot Water Beach , where visitors come to dig a pool at low tide and bathe in the piping hot water which flows up to the surface from the earth’s interior.

Other activities on offer include hiking through the native rainforest, cycling the Hauraki Rail Trail and discovering the relics of the area’s gold mining heritage.

The fourth largest of New Zealand’s islands, Great Barrier shelters Auckland from the relentless swells of the Pacific Ocean. Rugged and exceptionally beautiful, this is the land time forgot and makes for a wonderful superyacht charter destination.

Come here for all kinds of wilderness adventures. On land, a network of tramping tracks wind through the native New Zealand bush past hot springs and old kauri dams.  

Diving, fishing and kayaking are also possible, with a beautiful coastline of high cliffs and long, white surf beaches in the east and deep, sheltered harbours and calm, sandy bays in the west.

A five-hour cruise northwards brings New Zealand yacht-goers to the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve which, scattered 23 kilometres off Tutukaka Coast , is one of the top dive locations in the world.

The volcanic origins of these 11-million-year-old islands make for spectacular drop offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels, while converging warm water currents, a micro-climate and thousands of years  of separation from the mainland have resulted in a unique biodiversity.

From turbulent sunlit waters and kelp forests to the dark waters of the many caves to sponge gardens, gorgonian fields and hundreds of colourful fish, there is much for divers to discover.

Luring New Zealand superyacht charters further up the coast with its seductive good looks is the Bay of Islands. Clear, sparkling blue waters are punctuated with 144 undeveloped islands, presenting a maritime adventure playground with penguins, marlin, dolphins and whales to watch out for.  

On land, the islands are dotted with tiny, timeless towns and miles upon miles of rolling hillsides swoop down to deserted beaches or trace a forest trail to a wine estate or waterfront café.

The Bay of Islands is also a place of huge historical significance. Maori settled here in their early migrations and it was the site of New Zealand’s first permanent British settlement. Kiwi captain James Cutfield reportedly grilled by Italian police after superyacht sinking, divers recover more bodies

• James Cutfield, 51, originally of North Shore, Auckland, captained the sunken superyacht and has been reportedly grilled by Italian prosecutors.
• Divers have recovered the bodies of four more people, allegedly including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch .
• Rescuers continue searching the yacht on the bottom of the sea floor .

The Kiwi who captained the luxury yacht that sunk off the coast of Italy has reportedly been grilled for multiple hours by Italian prosecutors.

New Zealand citizen James Cutfield, 51, captained the Bayesian, the boat that sank off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo during a storm.

According to Italian media outlet Giornale Di Sicilia , Cutfield was questioned for two hours while prosecutors attempted to piece together the super yachts’ final moments.

Prosecutors are expected to interview other survivors as well.

It comes as divers searching the Bayesian have found five bodies and recovered four of them, according to local authorities.

Among those bodies identified are tech mogul Mike Lynch , Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported.

A woman’s body had also been found. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morvillo’s wife Neda and Bloomer’s wife Judy were among those missing.

Salvo Cocina, the director-general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, confirmed that five bodies had been found but only four brought to shore. One person remained missing, he said.

Searches had finished for the day and would resume on Thursday, Cocina said.

CNN reporters saw four body bags being moved from rescue boats into ambulances at the port of Porticello, near where the boat sank, though authorities did not provide details about those inside.

Rescuers have spent days trying to reach those remaining inside the boat but have been hampered by the depth of the vessel and debris blocking passageways.

The six had been missing since the 56m yacht sank amid a freak storm off the coast of Sicily on Monday, with 22 people on board. Fifteen had been rescued and one, the boat’s chef, was killed.

Captain’s brother says he was ‘well-respected’

Cutfield’s brother Mark told the Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected” in the Mediterranean.

He said he was in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”.

“He’s safe, he’s okay.”

Mark said they had received a call from James’ wife Cristina before the news broke so they would not worry about their brother’s life. She had flown from their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be by his side in Italy and has been updating the New Zealand family.

James had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.

He said before he worked for Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

Mark said James was a “top sailor” in his youth and raced 470s competitively in his youth.

When the Bayesian went down, James was among the 15 people who were rescued.

New Zealander Ayla Ronald, 36, a senior associate for Clifford Chance in London , and her partner Matthew Fletcher were among the people who were rescued.

Ronald is from Christchurch and studied at the University of Otago.

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far: 

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time. 

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank. 

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said. 

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added. 

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event. 

Who is missing?

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht. 

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing. 

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include: 

• Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah 
• Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
• Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
• The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued? 

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship. 

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

• Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
• Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
• Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
• New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
• A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy. 

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. 

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006. 

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million. 

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges. 

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling. 

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year. 

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion. 

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support. 

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

The ship also won a string of awards for its design. 

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking. 

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.
