• Lumbarda Marina – also on Korčula this marina has slips catering to yachts up to a max length of 25m/82ft.
• ACI Marina Vrboska – located in the celebrated islnad of Hvar, this marina offers berths for yachts up to a max length of 30m/98ft.
• Cavtat Marina – If you're struggling to find a slip in the summer, we recommend this marina, which is located to the south of Dubrovnik and enjoys good shelter from all winds. It offers 119 slips for yachts up to a max LOA of 60m/197ft.

Some of the best ports in Croatia are also located in the Istria region in northern Croatia. We recommend;

• D-Marin Dalmacija – located a few kilometers south of the ancient city of Zadar, which is the largest marina in Croatia with 1,200 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.
• ACI Marina Rovinj – catering for yachts with a LOA of up to 25m/82ft 
• Marina Funtana – max length 20m/65ft. 

For larger berths in the Split-Dalmatia region:

• ACI Marina Split –  located in the heart of Croatia's "jewel" this marina has recently been modernised, offering great shopping, dining, fuelling and repair services to name but a few, alongside 318 protected berths that can accommodate superyachts up to 90m LOA. 
• Marina Kastela – just 7km up the coast from Split – which can accommodate superyachts of up 150m/492ft in length, with a draft of 8m.
• D-Marin Mandalina – located in the city of Šibenik, situated between two National Parks within a protected lagoon, this marina boasts 429 slips, and has also been specially developed to accommodate yachts of up to 140m/459ft LOA.

If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be. 

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

• Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard. 
• Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
• You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.

Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.

The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

The town of Ston on the Pelješac peninsula is famous for its salt pans, which are thought to be the oldest in the Mediterranean and have been in constant use for 4000 years.

According to legend, Polače bay on Mljet, is where Odysseus was shipwrecked and detained by Calypso who wanted him for her husband.

One of the lakes has a small island with a 12th-century monastery. Mljet is also home to the Adriatic’s largest coral reef, which is great for snorkelling and scuba diving.

What's the weather like?

The Croatian climate is typically Mediterranean, meaning warm dry summers and mild winters. With 2,600 hours of sunlight yearly it is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe. You can expect temperatures of around 30°C during July/August with it dropping to around 23°C in May, June, September & October.  The prevailing wind in Croatia is from the north west, with an average wind speed of 7/8 knots. This grows to a comfortable Force 4-5 (10-20 knots) some afternoons making for some exhilerating sailing! Look out for the ‘Bora’ -  a north easterly that can surprise you if you don’t check your forecasts regularly.

What to bear in mind when sailing in Croatia

Please do be aware that unlike Greece, you will be required to pay marina and port fees. These fluctuate depending on the size of the yacht and location, but can be anywhere from £20 to £100 per night. This does of course come along with friendly port authorities more than happy to help you moor up, on shore toilets and showers, as well as quayside water and power.

Relish the ‘affordable’ luxury of a superyacht family holiday in Croatia

Superyacht family holidays don’t have to break the bank if you’re savvy. Family Traveller’s Andrew Dent hopped aboard a luxury boat off the coast of Croatia to see what it was like for himself.

If the words ‘super’ and ‘yacht’ combined make you think of the south of France plus shady Russian oligarchs or Middle Eastern royalty, then think again. There is now a way that you too can get a taste of the Superyacht World, and even bring your kids.

Slovenian-based yacht charter agency Goolets are at the forefront of supplying vessels that deliver the superyacht lifestyle at an “affordable price”. Although by affordable we mean starting prices of €80,000 a week (more like €100,000 once you include food, drink and so on)…

The refurbished yacht Ohana is a brilliant case in point. Ohana operates in the stunning Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia and has 14 cabins, accommodating up to 30 guests. Bookings must be for the whole yacht for a minimum of one week, so you might want to invite some family or friends. You could happily bring the extended family for a multi-generational celebration, or even include four or five families comfortably to share the cost.

When you start to think of it like that, you are not far off the cost of an all-inclusive luxury resort holiday on land in the peak summer months. So now we know this is within reach, let’s dive in and have a closer look.

What’s staying on a superyacht really like?

At a length of 49m, Ohana is an impressive sight from all angles and will make those on shore wonder quite who is on board. Ohana has had a facelift for this coming 2023 summer season, with upgrades creating 14 en-suite cabins with a mix of double and twin beds, making it perfect for children.

There is also a new kids’ playroom, which doubles up as a massage suite (although not at the same time clearly!). The communal spaces are beautiful and the sun deck on top of the ship is undeniably the focal point.

The spot offers a zen vibe for daytime sunbathing and relaxing – the jacuzzi was one of the most popular places onboard when we visited. In the evening the sun deck transforms into a great social place for all the family; movie nights on the large screen in front of the outdoor fireplace -how cool does that sound?

The other area you will spend a lot of time in is the salon – a spacious dining area that comfortably accommodates the whole gang. The food is a combination of local and luxury, with lots of seafood as you would expect, all made onboard by the chef de cuisine.

The staff are fantastic and will look after all the various culinary requests from the kids. They are particularly good when there is a guest birthday on board; think bespoke cake, candles and lots of singing.

Experience the joy of getting right into the heart of a destination

But the real beauty of small ship cruising is the accessibility to the destination. Croatia has become more and more fashionable over the years, rightly so in our view. The water is stunning and the shoreline much more rugged and less built up than the south of France .

Ohana is fully equipped to make the most of the shoreline as it is just the right size to enter some of the more exclusive bays and dock up at night, right alongside the harbours of some of the most interesting historic towns on the itinerary.

Enjoy a plethora of water sports during your holiday

When the yacht is moored up for a swim stop the deckhands will open up a treasure trove of toys, including jet skis, water skis, paddle boards, kayaks and all manner of floaties for the less adventurous who just want to bob around in the warm water (perhaps with a drink in hand).

The kids will love the new waterslide which zooms them down from the top deck and splashes into the emerald water. My guess is the kids will entertain themselves for hours on here (hopefully leaving you to some relaxation).

Make the most of the private way of life

As it’s a private charter, you get the chance to set the itinerary for your trip, including the start and end points. The team at Goolets will advise taking into account your group makeup and preferences. More beach? more culture? More swim stops? No problem, just let the captain know.

The itinerary we experienced started and finished in the historic town of Split. On our first night, the Ohana was moored only a few minutes’ walk away from the old town so we could have a walk around town with the kids before getting back on board for dinner and bed.

We also stopped at the famous islands of Hvar and Brač. The oldest coastal town on Brač is Bol, known for its beautiful beaches, of which the most famous and family-friendly is Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape).

The joy of the charter life is that you can sit on the beach building sand castles with the children whilst keeping an eye on the stunning Ohana glistening in the distance. Unlike everyone else on the beach, you know you are actually going to be onboard that evening enjoying a crisp glass of wine. The same goes for the hordes tramping along the front in Hvar and gazing up at you. Is it terrible to look down over your aperitif and smugly smile about how clever you are?
