London Boat Show – a look back over the years

yacht show london

A nostalgic look back at 63 years of the world’s oldest boat show

To subscribe to CB, click here .

1955

The recent news that the London Boat Show has – for 2019 a least – been cancelled, prompted us to take a look at the golden years of the world’s first boat show.

The London Boat Show started life in 1955 at London’s Olympia exhibition centre. The next year it returned, double the size, to accommodate the post-war sailing fever that was spreading through Britain. The biggest yacht of the entire show in 1956 was just 39ft (12m)!

London Boat Show

In 1959, the Boat Show moved to the place it is still most associated with – the Art Deco Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. During the 60s, it was brisk business, with the Beatles opening it one year – a role Thatcher would reprise in the 1980s.

yacht show london

In 2004, the Boat Show moved to its current home, the gargantuan Excel centre in London’s Docklands, a move that caused some sad nostalgia among those who fondly remembered Januaries at Earls Court sheltering from the rain and dreaming of summer. Nonetheless, more than 200,000 visitors poured through its doors, making it the most visited London Boat Show of recent years.

Part of that appeal was our big feature stand that appeared most years until 2012. It was, for that period, frequently the most popular stand at the boat show – well, after the Guinness Bar, if you count that. Not that we were entirely sober either, most of the time, with Old Pulteney whisky acting as our headline sponsor. Overall though, visitor numbers were dropping, with many citing the stale atmosphere of the hangar-like Excel halls, and the out-of-the-way location that lacks the pzazz, pubs and good restaurants of the area surrounding Earls Court.

Take a quick tour through history by scrolling down!

1955: The first London Boat Show, sponsored by the Daily Express at London’s Olympia Exhibition Centre in 1955, was the first boat show of its kind in the world. A royal barge was featured, as was Prince Phillip’s Flying Fifteen Coweslip , and an early GRP landing craft built for the Royal Marines.

1957:  From dinghies to the yacht Nyala, and even Bluebird. There is an interesting caravan boat in this showreel… “Boating is quickly becoming everybody’s hobby!”

1959:  “Ahoy, everybody!”  is the jolly title of this year’s British Pathe showreel.  It’s the age of the motorboat, the commentator says, and here we have a hydrofoil runabout, a ‘Monaco’ fast cruiser (the biggest boat in show at 59ft and ten berths), capable of 30 knots.

1962: The venue is Earl’s Court now and the floating pool has been modelled to resemble “A bit of Devon, deep in the heart of London.”   The British Pathe newsreader coins the wonderful phrase “the weekend afloat movement”.

1963: “Nowadays sailing attracts girls, too. Men never get anything to themselves for very long.” The things British Pathe men could say in the 60s and get away with! Here we have a Fifer MFV yacht, a replica of Henry Bell’s Comet , motorised canoe, and a Fairey Huntress.

1968: Waterskiing is all the rage, and Gipsy Moth IV is here, along with Sir Francis Chichester himself! We also have a National 12 dinghy, a hydrofoil jetski and a one-man submersible.

1973: We can’t make much out on this one, as it’s a Spanish-language newsreel, but the themes are modern gear (VHF and echo sounder), pretty girls hanging off trapezes and, most interestingly, footage of the start of a RIB race around London, through the canals and locks, something we believe ran for a number of years.

British marine and informa exhibitions relaunch london on water as the london yacht show.

British Marine is backing plans to relaunch a major new boat show in London in the spring. Informa Exhibitions, which already runs the successful Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows, has taken over the old London On Water show with a view to turning it into a bigger and better event.

The show takes place in May at St Katharine Docks, close to the City of London and yards from Tower Bridge. In previous years it has been a relatively small event but with Informa’s resources and the backing of British Marine, which runs the Southampton Boat Show, hopes are high that it will put a London boat show back on the international calendar.

“We’ve taken this show on for what it can be, not what it is,” says Andrew Williams, president of maritime for Informa Exhibitions. “Our decision to partner with British Marine stems from our desire to work very closely with the industry.”

Despite aiming for a three to four-fold increase in size, Andrew is keen for the show (renamed the London Yacht Show) to retain its boutique nature. “We’re not looking to compete with the Southampton Boat Show, this will be a focussed event aimed at the luxury end of the market.”

St Katharine Docks

Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, has already given it her backing, telling MBY: “Our decades of experience running renowned boat shows in the UK mean a network of relationships and contacts. In particular, our sales team will be working with the team at Informa to secure and grow the presence of leading brands.”

However, Robinson is keen to stress that the new LYS is not a direct replacement for the now defunct ExCel show. “LYS is a completely different prospect. It is primarily catering to the demands of boat brands and associated products and services which cater for the luxury market.”

Current plans envisage an immediate expansion to around 77 on-water berths, including eight superyachts. There will also be three floating villages and a number of land-based marquees and hospitality areas. It’s a move that has already been warmly welcomed by all three of the UK’s major motor boat builders.

Miles Moorhouse of Fairline Yachts told MBY: “We’re very excited. With British Marine driving the show forward and the weight of Informa Exhibitions behind it, it has every reason to be successful.”

It’s a view echoed by Princess Yachts marketing director, Kiran Haslam. “A London-centric show is a hugely important event for the industry. The proposed dates and the location of this show are better than the old Excel show. Many of our clients are skiing in early January and Excel was always at the mercy of winter travel issues”.

Sunseeker is also planning to exhibit.

The Editor’s View…

This could be exactly the kind of BOAT SHOW LONDON NEEDS. Both the timing and location of it are far more appealing than EXCEL in January. St Kat’s doesn’t have a lot of berths so I hope they manage to get a good mix of boats for people to see not just the obvious big guns.

4 highlights from the London Boat Show 2016

Made in chelsea star lucy watson opens the show.

The 62nd annual London Boat Show started on January 8 and runs until January 17 at London's ExCeL.

The show was opened by Made In Chelsea actress Lucy Watson in what is billed as the biggest event in the show's history.

Lucy Watson said: “I’m thrilled to open the London Boat Show 2016 and can’t believe how much there is for people to see and do here. There are close to 400 boats to try out as well as other experiences and demonstrations throughout the ten day event.

"I’ve manned the winch of a sail boat and watched a Seabob demonstration at the huge indoor pool! Whether visitors are boating beginners or sailing experts, there’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy.”

Sunseeker 131 unveiled

The Sunseeker stand was opened by Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville, along with company founder Robert Braithwaite.

Sunseeker launched its new Sunseeker 131 yacht at their stand at the ExCeL after she was seen travelling up the Thames to attend the London Boat Show . At 40 metres the Sunseeker 131 is the largest yacht at the show and the Poole-based company has already taken orders for the first five.

Sunseeker reportedly took more than £14 million of orders in the first three days of the London Boat Show as customers ordered a range of yachts including two 26 metre superyachts.

Sunseeker has also been in the news recently as they look to hire new staff to help boost the introduction of new models in 2016.

Princess 75 revealed

The Princess 75 is the largest entry by the Plymouth based yacht builder at the London Boat Show. Designs were revealed last October  but visitors to the boat show can now see the yacht in the flesh at the Princess stand.

Princess plans to reveal its new 30 metre M Class at the  Dusseldorf Boat Show at the end of January.

Land Rover BAR make an appearance

Land Rover BAR is well represented at the show, offering interactive sailing experiences and power grinder competitions to help spark interest. Sailors Nick Hutton and David 'Freddie' Carr spoke to visitors about the progress at Ben Ainslie Racing, with visitors able to gain a unique insight into the world of the  America's Cup .

The British team continues in its preparation for the challenge with racing in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series. For British fans who missed the racing at the Portsmouth event last summer, a second event in July will provide a second chance to enjoy the action.

As the countdown to the London Boat Show 2018 begins, YBW looks back at some of the boat shows of yesteryear which were held in the capital.

As the countdown to the London Boat Show 2018 begins, YBW looks back at some of the boat shows of yesteryear which were held in the capital….can you spot someone you know?

Before it was held at ExCeL in London, the main boat show in the capital was held first at Olympia before moving to Earl’s Court in 1957.

The show was a direct result of the launch of cheaper boats, such as dinghies, post the Second World War, which opened up the sport of sailing to the middle classes.

Prior to that, it had been seen as an activity for the wealthy.

Earls Court proved very popular, mostly because of the venue’s pool which could showcase new launches.

The 1967 show featured English Rose III, the 20-foot open dory that John Ridgway and Chay Blyth rowed across the North Atlantic in the year before.

Hotels: where to stay during the London Boat Show 2018

From luxurious hotels to affordable rooms, look no further if you are booking accommodation in the capital this January.

At the time, sailing was a headline hitting sport, with Sir Francis Chichester completing his 1966-67 circumnavigation on board his yacht  , Gipsy Moth IV , in May 1967.

The vessel later showcased at the 1968 show.

The 1968 show also saw Ocean Bird go on display.

The John Westell-designed trimaran featured fold-in external floats on a webless steel-beam frame chosen to avoid stability threats from windage when keeling.

The 1970 boat show featured a fresh-faced Robin Knox-Johnston, who the year before had become the first person to sail singlehanded and non-stop around the world.

His 32-foot Bermuda ketch, Suhaili , was a star attraction at the show.

The London Boat Show eventually moved from Earl’s Court to ExCeL in 2004 to accommodate a larger selection of boats and equipment.

Dramatic footage shows couple rescued during storm on 40ft yacht

This is the moment police saved a terrified couple after an unexpected storm hit their 40ft yacht off the Essex coast.

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing in their yacht, the Samphire, when a storm took them by surprise.

Mr Harris and his partner had been sailing back to the River Crouch in Essex from Kent’s Isle of Sheppey last Sunday when an unforecasted storm damaged their yacht, which began taking on water.

After the yacht became damaged Mr Harris sent out a distress call requesting emergency assistance.

Essex Police’s Marine Unit was scrambled and found the couple near the Gunfleet Sands off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

Officers rescued the couple and brought both them and their yacht back to shore.

A marine police unit is seen boating through waves

Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force’s rib, Sentinel, when they picked up the distress call and rushed out to the Samphire.

Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the yacht and rescued the distressed couple.

Mr Harris heaped praise on Essex Police’s maritime unit for saving their lives and admitted he wouldn’t have sailed had he known they would have hit a storm.

‘When Alex leapt onto the boat, touched my arm and said, ‘You’re safe now’, it was such a comfort,’ Mr Harris said. ‘I had been scared for my life. The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.

‘We sailed for six to seven hours in good conditions but then the water started whipping up and, when we turned into the Crouch, the wind caught the tender (dinghy) on the front of Samphire, the jib sheet broke, the ropes got tangled and water started pouring through the hatch.

‘I became exhausted very quickly and sent a PAN-PAN. I didn’t want to call for assistance because the airwaves were busy but I had no choice.

‘The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue – I wasn’t expecting them at all. I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved.’

Caroline smiles as an officer boards the yacht to get them onshore

Sgt Southgate added that the storm saw waves crashing over the Samphire, making their approach dangerous as it was a very windy day.

He added: ‘PC Perry’s skill and judgement at the helm enabled him to get Sentinel safely alongside. He timed everything perfectly with the wave movement and the rising and falling of the yacht to allow me to safely cross over and board the yacht.

‘Having done this, I was able to check the crew and ascertain that the skipper was suffering from severe sea sickness and was in a state of shock.

‘Once we’d checked everything over, I was able to take control of the yacht and steer it to the safety of Brightlingsea Harbour.

‘It’s great to know everyone’s got each other’s back at sea.’

Due to the stormy conditions and the Samphire’s damaged sail, the journey to shore took more than two hours on rough seas instead of the 45 minutes the trip would take in normal conditions.

Sgt Southgate added: ‘Thankfully, we were out on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the area that day and were able to locate Mr Harris and his partner in time.’

Essex Police’s Marine Unit runs Operation Wave-Breaker between April and September each year to tackle anti-social behaviour and promote water safety, mounting high-visibility patrols along the Essex coastline to keep those in the water safe.
