27' newport sailboat

newport 27 368

Success came quickly to Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California, when it debuted the Newport 27 in 1971. The boat, designed by George Cuthbertson and George Cassian, the founders of C&C Yachts, quickly established itself on the local racing scene. The 27 was in production for about 15 years.

For a 27-footer, the boat has an unusually commodious interior. Standing headroom is just over 6 feet, and the most common interior layout features a V-berth, a head, and a small hanging locker forward of the main bulkhead. Settees measuring 6 feet in length run along either side of the saloon. Two people can sit comfortably on each settee at the table, which can be folded up flush with the bulkhead when not in use; under way, this surface serves as a nav station.

Aft of the settees, a small counter to port contains a sink and icebox access. Opposite is another counter with a recessed two-burner alcohol stove. Variations on this layout include a starboard quarter berth, a fixed dinette with raised seating fore and aft, and an aft-placed head. Regardless of the layout, oiled teak was used liberally, its warm traditional aesthetic spoiled somewhat by the adjacent wood-patterned Formica that covers all horizontal surfaces.

Construction is typical for the era and the price point. The hull is hand laid, and the keel is lead. All through-hulls are bronze, but they’re fitted with PVC gate valves. Dry storage seems endless, but tankage is inadequate for longer than a weekend cruise; the holding tank is only 6 gallons.

Tiller steering is standard, and the underbody features a fin keel and a balanced spade rudder. Early models draw a modest 4 foot 3 inches; the Mark II models have 5-foot-2-inch draft for improved upwind performance. Displacing 6,000 pounds, either version scoots along in light air, but both are tender. As wind and boat speeds increase, so does weather helm. On my boat, a Mark II, an Autohelm 1000 tillerpilot could only manage so much weather helm, and I often reduced sail earlier than I might have otherwise done.

The traveler is forward of the companionway. Friction between the traveler and its track makes it difficult and dangerous to adjust it if the mainsheet is under any significant load. Installing a modern traveler should join replacing the PVC through-hull valves at the top of any improvements list.

Most Newport 27s came with an inboard auxiliary, either a gasoline-powered Atomic 4 or, later, an 11-horsepower Universal diesel. Access to the engine on either inboard version is excellent.

Used Newport 27s list between $10,000 and $18,000, depending on condition and the upgrades made. While not a stout offshore cruiser and no longer a competitive racer, the Newport 27 is still a capable, inexpensive daysailer that, when upgraded and outfitted accordingly, can deliver modest coastal cruising to a couple or a singlehander.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

I am exited and a bit daunted to own my first boat. Its currently docked in Chattanooga. I'll load some pictures tomorrow, when I finish all the marina paperwork. I'm not exactly sure where to start with this boat, as it likely needs a good deal of care and maintenance. I read they make good first sailboats, and hope to travel many miles of the river with it. Hopefully the community can help me out, and help me become a better boater and sailor! I've got a long list of things to check before I undock!

welcome!

Congrats on the purchase. Remain dauntless. It's just a sailboat. You'll improve it over the time you own it. Main thing is to get it ready to use and then use it. Did you have a survey? If so what were the Rx'ed fixes?

Consider posting the list. Many items may be un-necessary to getting it on the water.

I might be inclined to take a power washer to the deck and cockpit. There's a very good chance it will clean up. Maybe not be beautiful but useable. It looks like you'll need new running rigging at least for the backstay adjuster. I might try the power washer on the mainsheet as that looks like primarily mildew. The anchor looks OK but you may want some chain. The anchor locker most probably has a drain. Look for it on the outside of the hull. You should flush and drain it until the dirt and paint chips are gone and water drains freely. Bilge pumps exit the hull above the waterline. It is regular for the water in the hose to drain back into the bilge when the pump shuts off. You can put a one way valve in but many feel this slows the water stream down and retains water in the hose. The cabin sole is shot. Don't waste time with repair. Replace. I don't know how that boat was constructed. But if the sole is wood it was probably built on stringers which cross the cabin athwartships. You would need a sub-floor of marine ply. I'd consider putting a carpet remnant over the sub-floor and be done with it. Replace as necessary. Take down the headliner. Don't bother trying to re-glue it. Consider painting the underside of the deck. A tarp over the whole deck won't work. You can build a tent but why? Dorade vents are good. Ventilation goes a long way to reduce odors and mildew. Boats should have airflow through them. Repair the vents so they don't leak. On your list there aren't the big money items. You haven't mentioned soft deck, rotted bulkheads, corroded chainplates, hull blisters, new standing rigging, a rough bottom, keel problems etc. What you have is a seriously neglected boat that needs a major clean up. I would remove everything from the boat. Everything - except pumps. Then I would try to decide if you want to boat to use for day sails, overnights, longer cruises, or if you want to restore it for resell. If the latter, you should know that it will never be worth the time and money it would take to do that.

SBO Weather and Forecasting Forum Jim & John

Questions I have: 1. To where does the bilge discharge? There is a hose that goes way around to port, but then it dissapears into a place I have not been able to access, which may require tearing into the head. Bilge should discharge overboard. You may have a hole in the stern or one on the side of the boat. Stern is most likely. The condition of the boat may have the hose from the pump broken of clogged. You will need to find both ends of the hose and securely attach it to the through hull so that water from the pump dumps outside of the boat. 2. What to do about the floor? I assume its wood glued to the fiberglass? Try to salvage? Totally gut and replace? I would gut all the damaged wood. If you still have enough solid wood left you could patch it. There is nothing wrong with dumping all of it and starting fresh. A big concern it that the wood the forms the inner frame of the boat may be rotted. This needs to be removed and replaced. The boats outer skin is held in shape by the inner frame. Some boats use wood to construct this inner frame some use fiberglass. 3. Can I just throw a tarp over the whole deck to help keep the rain out? Maybe crack open the hatches as well? Absolutely. A tarp would be a great temporary winter cover. 4. If the boat were originally ordered without an inboard engine, would the factory have installed a Diesel fill port, and fill hose? Maybe? 5. Can I actually fit in the Aft cabin? Give it a try. I would get everything that is not nailed down on the boat off it so you can begin the work of Rebuilding the boat. I would put dehumidifier on the boat under your tarp. You will need to empty the water off the boat. This will take a few days. Then you will have a place to start. Good luck.

Yes the wire/line (rope) halyard is a thing from the 80’s. The wire comes out of the mast and down to the winch or cleat at the mast base as the sail goes up.

John eventually whether hidden or exposed we all turn to dust. Use the halyards and sail a lot. When you get home drop the sail and secure the boat safely away. Your wire/line spices should retract into the mast, if they run through the mast when you drop the sail. If they are outside the mast nothing can be done to hide them. Eventually we all replace our halyards. When I refit my mast, I changed the halyards to line. I like the feel. Eventually they will wear out and I will need to replace. I intend to have as much fun as possible with them as long as they last.

Newport 27 keel. How is it constructed?

  • Add to quote

Is anyone familiar with the construction and attachment of the N27 keels? I have my boat in the yard and I'm stripping the bottom paint. Much to my suprise there is exposed lead and the keel doesn't seem to be glassed. It has a soft material that seems like fairing compound. I though it was lead encapsulated in fiberglass. Does it have keel bolts? Any info would be a huge help. Thanks Russ Douglass

27' newport sailboat

I'm not positive on this but as a C&C design it's unlikely to have encapsulated ballast. Surely you've had the cabin sole (floorboards) up - you should see keelbolts if you do. In rare cases they are glassed over, but that's bad practice and not real likely. If you can see bare lead, and the hull/keel joint then it's pretty safe to say it's a bolt on keel.

The bare lead is further down the keel from the joint. It does look like the bolts have been glassed over. I'm not sure the best way to go about re-fairing the exposed lead areas of the keel. Any advise? I'll try to post pics later they're on my work computer. Thanks Russ

Newport keels Same story here on a N30. The manual talks about the keel attachment process, whereas they glue and bolt the keel on and then 'permanently' (whatever that means in saltwater) seal the keelbolts against corrosion. The bilge on my N30 is smooth FG, no bolts sticking out. I too found, that the fairing compound is pretty soft. Doeas anyone have good experience with glassing the lead in? Epoxy or polyester resin?? Make sure you don't do too much lead grinding / sanding or it could be a quick way to the bottom of the ocean (for yourself that is, ha!)

I did try to limit the lead grinding, but it had to be done. I ended up using interlux 2000e as a primer, and then glassed 4 layers over the entire front edge of the keel and 8-10 inches up the hull. Then I used west systems 406 and 407 to rebuild and fair the areas that I had removed material. Now I'm in the process of prepping it for 4 coats of 2000e and bottom paint. With any luck I'll have the whole thing painted by Sunday. Repositioned on Monday, and finish the pad areas and get it back in the water before I'm broke.

I have recently acquired a 1978 Newport 27. I and am a little uneasy about the keel bolts being glassed over. Given the age of the boat, it would be nice to inspect the bolts. I really don't have much faith in the idea that they were "permanently sealed against corrosion". Has anyone who owns a 27, or another model with similar keel setup ever removed the glass to inspect the bolts? If so, would you comment on the procedure and your experience? Thanks! Mike

I didn't dig all of the glass out of the bilge to expose the keel bolts. I did grind alot of it out and after getting as dry as possible, I sealed it with west systems epoxy and interthane plus epoxy paint. Even after grinding down 1/2 inch in some areas, I still didn't even find the top of the bolts.

I have come across the owners manual for the Newport 27S. Under "Keel Installation", reads the following: "The ballast on Newport Boats is a solid lead and alloy keel. The galvanized iron keel bolts are permanently locked in place by positioning them in the keel at the time it is poured. An epoxy adhesive is applied to the top of the keel before it is bolted to the keel recess in the hull. A fiberglass cloth is bonded over the entire joined area to further seal it. A resin and asbestos mixture is poured into the keel recess and allowed to harden. The covered keel bolts and their nuts are now permanently locked and insured of never having water come in contact with them. The area of the hull to keel joint and the entire keel is now coated with micro-balloons, a resin based fairing agent. The whole area is then ground smooth and more micro-balloons are applied to any hollow spots. This process is repeated until the entire installation is smooth and uniform. It is then sanded and ready for bottom paint." Mike

27' newport sailboat

I would not worry too much about the bolts; the epoxy bonding/sealing job they did was excellent. In addition IIRC the bolts are galvanized steel so they won't suffer from crevice corrosion like a stainless bolt would. The bain of non stainless steel fasteners is oxygen getting in and promoting corrosion; but since the bolts are sealed from above and below there should be little oxygen getting in there.

27' newport sailboat

I'm running into an issue with this as well. The leading edge of my keel on my 85 Newport 27 had cracked on both sides. After sanding down and cleaning, I found the resin they had used to bed the keel is cracked and broken up along the leading edge. Being its "perminant" I am wondering how I should fix it? Do I clean all the way around the keel joint, and epoxy and reglass it hoping that water didn't make it clear to the bolts? Or grind out the bolts and remove the keel and check them.

Blue Jeans Hand Finger Sky

Ok down to brass tacks. I decided I was going to visually inspect the rest of the keel joint. This required me removing the fiberglass from the keel. Not too hard as it had gotten water inside and was loose from the lead. Was able to remove it fairly easily with a prybar. The entire joint with the exception of the leading edge was still well sealed.in going to repair the leading edge and seal the outside of the keel joint with epoxy, then eyeglass and repaint it. Should be good for another 35 years.

Pics of keel without fiber glass. And of keel joint.
