100 years, countless memories for the Balboa Yacht Club

The centennial celebration at Balboa Yacht Club included a fireworks display on Saturday night.

The Balboa Yacht Club kicked off its centennial Saturday night during its annual installation of new officers and end-of-year meeting, with 200 members enjoying dinner and fireworks at what Centennial Committee chair Stacie Brandt said would be the first of many upcoming celebrations.

“We have all-year events,” said Brandt. “There’s a lunch in March, a ball in April and a regatta in August.”

According to Brandt, a group of men from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club who wanted to focus more on small-boat sailing in 1922 founded the Southland Sailing Club, which became the Balboa Yacht Club in 1928.

A 1938 small boat regatta on the southeast corner of Little Balboa Island.

With its prime location near the entrance to the Newport Harbor on Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar, the club sits directly across the water from the second clubhouse on Little Balboa Island. “They found a beach cottage on the [Balboa] Peninsula, which was their first clubhouse,” said Brandt. “Their second clubhouse, between 1926 and 1941, was on the [southeast] tip of Little Balboa Island until their lease ran out, and they built the current club in 1941.”

Many of the attendees at the event had positive things to say about their club memberships, some of which extend back decades.

Russell Miller, who had worked at Balboa Yacht Club as the food and beverage manager from 2008 until 2014, said he felt lucky to come back as the club’s general manager in 2019.

“It is immensely satisfying to me that I get to celebrate the club’s centennial year with the people who, outside of my family, mean the most to me in my life,” said Miller. “BYC is truly an exceptional club filled with exceptional people.”

Balboa Yacht Club Commodore Paul Blank, left, and Senior Staff Commodore Morrie Kirk.

Morrie Kirk, who has been boating since he was 3 years old and has been an active member of the club since 1969, is the senior staff commodore and oldest staff commodore. He was commodore in 1977.

“The biggest change is in the city and how much it’s grown,” said Kirk. “The club is very much the same, we’re a boating club, friendly, family-oriented club, same location since 1941.”

Kirk explained that the club was originally all sailing, and today there are more powerboats than sailboats. The current membership of 600 has changed over the years due to attrition, but the club still has 50 members who joined the club more than 50 years ago.

On Saturday, Kirk was selected by the incoming commodore, Paul Blank, to be the “installing officer” to relieve the current board of responsibilities and introduce the new commodore.

“I chose him because he’s a great man, a good friend, has contributed greatly to BYC through several decades and has the most seniority among the staff commodores,” Blank said.

Blank, a Corona del Mar resident and the Newport Harbormaster, has been a member of the club for 37 years. “The location is excellent, friendship built from shared passion on the water activities that I have not found at other clubs,” he said. “The camaraderie, support, improved seamanship, adventures near and far, small and large, all trying to make each other better.”

While boating innovation has changed over the last 100 years, the shared passion for water activities among members remains consistent.

The Balboa Yacht Club has been located on Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar since 1941.

Blank has seen changes in manufactured-boating styles and opportunities for boating innovation, such as speed and vessel foiling, like hydrofoil sailboats flying out of water. “Boating has changed, style, availability and increased variety,” said Blank. “What has remained consistent is the passion for getting out on the water no matter what the vessel is.”

A burnished wood plaque from 1926 that hangs today over the present club’s dining room fireplace reflects that attitude. The first commodore, Isaac B. Potter, originally donated the plaque, which includes a quote from 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield that calls for gutsiness, courage and determination to meet danger or difficulty: “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.”

Balboa Yacht Club Celebrates Centennial Year

balboa yacht club sailing

NEWPORT BEACH一 The Balboa Yacht Club holds to the motto “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck,” a saying that has followed the club from its beginning on the Balboa Peninsula in 1922. BYC will celebrate 100 years in 2022 and kicked off celebrations on Dec. 4 with their annual officer installation and year-end meeting; members met for dinner and fireworks. BYC was founded in 1922, originally named the Southland Sailing Club; the club was created by a small group of sailors interested in founding an active sailing organization focused on family sailing. The club started as a small wooden structure on Balboa Peninsula and moved to a new clubhouse on the southeast corner of Little Balboa Island in 1926, according to the BYC website. In 1928 the club underwent a name change. In 1941 the lease on the second clubhouse ran out, and the current clubhouse was built on Bayside Drive. In 1957 the club signed a lease with the Catalina Island Company, which gave them an outstation site at Whites Cove, west of Avalon. Club members got to work and took on various projects, including landscaping, plumbing, and cement work, to create another facility on the island.  Over the years, the club has continued to grow, adding regattas and cruises to club events. Most recently, the club hosted the 54th Annual Governor’s Cup in July of this year. The club is planning on several more events throughout the year to mark the centennial anniversary. The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

The Legacy of Ullman Sails

Ullman Sails has a rich and diverse legacy in custom sail design and sail manufacturing dating back over 50 years. Ullman Sails is an international company, located in 25 countries with 75 locations worldwide that benefit from the collaboration of skilled sail designers, experienced sailmakers and decorated sailors. Our group is founded on a rich and diverse heritage of sailmaking . The company is focused on sharing our passion for sailing by providing our customers with quality sails delivered with attentive and knowledgeable customer service.

History of Ullman Sails

The sail loft was a small 37m2 office space with a single sewing machine. The first sails bearing his blue and red logo were made for a popular local dinghy, the Lido 14, and the sails won their first race.

Image: David learned how to make sails for five years prior to founding Ullman Sails at the local Baxter an d Cicero loft. Even at the very beginning of his career, David’s success on the water was the best promotion for his sails as seen in this advertisement from 1965.

Image: Corona Del Mar in the late 1960s was simply a small, quiet coastal town, mostly viewed as a place people could retreat from Los Angeles. In the bottom right you can see part of Balboa Yacht Club where Dave has been a member his entire adult life.

Image: Lido 14 # 2787, likely built in 1967. The class, which started in 1958 (produced by W D Schock Performance Sailboats), was immediately popular. By 1969 over 3,500 boats had been produced – mostly for racers and cruisers in Southern California. The Lido 14 class remains popular today with over 60 teams competing in the 2016 Class Championships.

We think the photo shown here is of David Ullman.  The Lido 14 and Sabot are a major part of Southern California sailing heritage.

Image: Lido 14s powering downwind in a local regatta in Newport Beach, California. Ullman Sails’ dominance in the Lido 14 has continued for decades with teams using Ullman Sails winning the majority of the class’s National Championships over the last 50 years – including 2016’s winner Bruce Golison.

Year 4, 1971: David Ullman continued to dominate the local Southern California dinghy sailing circuit, winning the Lido 14 National Championship for the third year in a row and taking his second Senior Sabot National Championship in three years. The two victories brought his National Championship titles to five at the age of 25.

At this time Dave was starting to look for sailing outside of Southern California, he just had to find the right class…

Image: David around this time ( date not available) rocking his classic mustache.

However, David Ullman would not stop there. In 1972 Dave set his sights on the 470 Class. The 470 fit David’s size and mentality – it was small and the highest performance boat at the time. It was not that expensive and had the best competition in the world. He would go on to start his first Olympic Campaign in the class.

Jeff’s sailing resume was strong before joining Ullman Sails and has only grown since. Jeff won the 1981 Snipe World Championships, two Snipe North American Championships, a Finn North Americans, and has a Sabot National Championship title to his name. Jeff has also taken second place at nine Snipe National Championships. You can still find Jeff at the Ullman Sails Newport Beach loft building sails today.

Year 15 and 16 – 1982-1983 : In 1982 David Ullman wins his eighth Lido 14 National Championship, and in the following year he would compete in the Admiral’s Cup again, this time providing Ullman Sails for and sailing ‘Shenandoah’.  David would again place as the top American boat at the event.

The team was eventually eliminated in the knock-out series.  ‘Prada Challenge’ would win the Louis Vuitton Cup, but ultimately lose to Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup.

balboa yacht club sailing

Business name : Balboa Yacht Club

In 1922, when Newport Harbor was more shoals and sandbars than open water, the Southland Sailing Club, soon renamed the Balboa Yacht Club, was formed by a small group of sailors wanting an active organization with an emphasis on family sailing. From its beginnings in a small wooden structure on open, sandy Balboa Peninsula, BYC has evolved to become one of southern California’s most prestigious yachting organizations. In 1926 the Club moved to a new clubhouse on the southeast corner of Little Balboa Island, a stone’s throw from its present location on Bayside Drive. Over the fireplace hung a burnished wood plaque bearing the Club’s motto, “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.” Originally donated by the first commodore, Isaac B. Potter, the plaque hangs today over the present Club’s dining room fireplace.

The Newport Harbor of the past began to change as dredging began in 1935, and the following year the harbor we know today was officially opened for navigation. Balboa Yacht Club, with it’s prime location near the harbor entrance, now had a convenient, protected anchorage for its growing fleet.

BYC signed a lease with the Catalina Island Company in 1957 giving them an outstation site at Whites Cove west of Avalon. Thanks to members’ untold hours of hard work, from cement work to landscaping, from plumbing and wiring to carpentry and painting, this facility is now a treasured getaway site for members to enjoy. The Clubhouse and facilities on Bayside drive have evolved over their half-century of use to meet the changing yachting needs of the membership and to provide a comfortable environment for a wide variety of social activities. A detailed history of Balboa Yacht Club includes a litany of its members’ successes in some of yachting’s most highly acclaimed competitions. Its cruisers have ranged worldwide in their boats. In fact, Baja California and the coast of mainland Mexico are as familiar to many of the members as the coves of Catalina.
