A popular Irish yacht club has apologised after cancelling the party of a 90-year-old minutes before it was due to start.

Well-known musician George O'Reilly was all set to have his birthday in Howth Yacht Club last Saturday.

However when staff saw George hammering pictures into a newly renovated wall, they were shocked.

Mr O'Reilly was hanging the pictures to showcase moments throughout his life.

After staff saw the nails being hammered, they quickly cancelled the party with less than an hour's notice.

Speaking on RTE's Liveline, his daughter Mary explained she was left in tears after the incident.

She said: "It was 45 minutes to the time I got a phone call from a gentleman saying he was cancelling the event.

"I was in floods of tears in front of dozens people."

Paddy Judge from Howth Yacht Club also spoke on the show to explain their side of the story and to apologise to Mr O'Reilly.

Mr Judge said: "I was told by a member of the staff that someone was knocking nails into the wall."

Judge told how there was no permission given to nail anything into the wall and that it was damaged.

He added: "I told Mary that the party was called off until something was done about it.

"I don’t have any problem apologising if I upset her. We regret very much that this happened, it is not our desire to upset anyone."

After some discussions, the party did go ahead in the end - although Mary had to pay damages.

Mr Judge said: "They got the go ahead to have the party after I got a deposit of €1,000, to cover any damages."

He also said that he would refund any of the €1,000 that wasn't needed for repairs.

Breaking: Successful Bid to Host 2021 J/24 European Championships

This Irish J24 WhatsApp group is alight with the announcement that Howth Yacht Club has been selected to host the J24 European Championships in 2021.

Ireland’s proposal was made at the 2019 World Council Meeting in Miami on 28 October 2019 and voted on by the European NJCA’s with the announcement made this week.

The Irish J24 Fleet and Howth Yacht Club will re-kindle a previous successful partnership which saw the North Dublin club host both the J24 Europeans in 2011 and J24 World Championships in 2013. On news of the announcement Mark Usher, Irish J24 Class President shared his delight and expressed his gratitude to the architects of the bid.

“The Irish J24 fleet is once again indebted to Howth Yacht Club, we are fortunate to have a club with their experience, expertise, facilities and infrastructure as our host club.  I would like to recognise those who led the bid, Commodore Ian Byrne, Vice-Commodore Paddy Judge and Neil Murphy who were assisted by Flor O’Driscoll.  We look forward to working with Howth Yacht Club to organise and deliver a top-class event both on and off the water.”

The Irish J24 Fleet is undergoing a period of significant growth demonstrated by 32 boats entering the recent Irish National Championships at Lough Erne Yacht Club. The growth has been accelerated by commitment to an Under 25 development programme which has been supported by Irish Sailing, Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) and West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association (WIORA) who have both provided grants to clubs for development of Under 25 teams. In previous years, the hosting of international events has acted as catalyst for new entries to the Irish fleet seeking to challenge themselves against top class international competition.

Howth Yacht Club 53 Square Metre Pergola

“Last year Howth Yacht Club ordered a Renson Camargue pergola from Posh Pergolas, Limerick which has since been installed.

This has an area of 53 square metres with glass sliding panels on each side. The opening roof vanes are remotelycontrolled and have automatic rain detection. In addition, it is fitted with infra-red beam heaters and LED lighting.

A significant characteristic for us, due to our exposed nature of our site, was that the unit is guaranteed for winds of up to 120 km/hr. We are very pleased with the installation which enhances our premises and is enjoyed by our club members, particularly in inclement weather.

I would recommend Eamon and his company to any potential customer as we found them very professional and would have no hesitation in re-employing them in the future, should the occasion arise.

Our club racing series schedule runs from the end of April through to October each year and provides multiple racing series for dinghies and keelboats. The one-design and cruiser club racing schedules are available here . Information about dinghy racing is available here .

If you would like to join one of the crews to go racing, contact the Class Captain s  for an introduction. Alternatively, you can use our new and improved   Crew Finder  system.

Race results are posted online and are accessed by clicking on the red Results button on the homepage.

Click Results Query if you have any issues. This will auto-generate an email with a set of questions for you to complete to help speed up the query process.  

Handicaps are either IRC or HPH. HPH handicaps are set at the beginning of each season and iterated by HYC Results, in conjunction with the relevant Class Captain, after each series.
