History of the Dragon Class Yacht International Class
The Dragon is perhaps the most famous fixed keel standard one design class yacht belonging to the international classes. The work of Johann Anker, the renowned Norwegian naval architect, the Dragone design, which some date from 1925, was introduced officially at a competition arranged in 1927 by the Royal Yacht Club of Goteborg. Rigged as a sloop and originally conceived as a pleasure boat and as a regatta boat, the hull had a closed cabin with two beds and a small galley. The type spread immediately throughout Scandinavia and Germany and appeared in Great Britain in 1935. This yacht grew in popularity becoming prevalent in Spain, France, Italy, Russia and Australia.

The first Dragen was built in 1929 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The sailing characteristics of the vessel were so fine that the boat soon was used throughout the world, and especially in Europe. As time passed, the Dragen changed gradually, so that today only the hull is original. In 1948 the Dragen became an Olympic yachting class, and all measurements have been standardized by the international Sailsport Union.
I started this kit about 25 years ago, had it stored in my garage since then.
Then i got interested again, and started to rebuild/restore here.
It turned out to be a fun project, and joining the MSW only made it better, a lot of helpful people with a ton of knowledge.
The build will continue, but first upload the buildlog pictures.
I had a big job ahead, it looked like a stranded ship wreck.

Some pictures of the planking progress.
At first i was in doubt if i should double plank or single plank the hull. Doble planking might be easier as you get a better base for laying the planks, but i desided to try single planking. There was some trail and errors, but with careful measuring and a lot of sanding and steaming of the planks it turned out ok.
This was the first time i had to use stealers, but with good help from MSW members i managed to fit them to.
- malmoerik and yvesvidal
The hull was sanded and received a coat of varnish, and then two coats of clear.
Its nice to watch as you varnish the hull how the wood shows itself.
Making the deck framing, and planking.
I made a frame of Mahogany in 4 pcs.that i cut out of a sheet of 2mm Mahogany.
First i glued a thin sheet of balsa to the deck to support the planking, installed the framing losely on paper so i could put the end of the plank under the frame to make a accurate marking for the cutting of the plank.
I was very satisfied with the result

Thanks Popeye, it was a lot o work but it looked nice when done. Couldnt go for the original idea of a single Mahogany deck, nope.
Thats a great part of modelbuilding, being creative. )
The build of the cabin.
First i made a jig to be able to bend the cabin sidewalls, and aft part.
I maybe stretched some laws in bending when making the rear part, it was just before it splintered when doing the 90 degree bending.
When glueing the sidewalls and rear part together i use aluminium foil between the pieces so it didnt stick to the jig.
The plans called for a dummy sliding hatch, nope...

To many projects, to many things. You know when you collect all sort of "handy" stuff you think will com to use sometime......
Some more photos of the cabin installed, and some fitting installed.
lower deck sides covered with 0,5mm veener.
Benches completed, and put in place.
Fitting of the mast, and boom with some fittings installed.
Made a mast support on the lathe to fit in the front of the cabin.
Most of the deck fitings is now in place.

Hi Capn Bob, thankyou so much for nice words on my build, its much apreciated.
Pictures from making the channel for the main sail.
I then went for a aluminium profile, and that was working well. Had to find a way to connect the two lenghts i was using.
Welding was out of the question, to small. Then i searched the net about soldering aluminium, and found a great solution for this purpose. Alutite is a alloy for heating with a open flame, and melts before the alu melts, works like soldering, and is strong

Pictures from when i started to test rigging the ship.
Some pictures are with the new sail channel.
For the boom i milled a track in it.
And a picture of the great nature just 1km from our house.

Dragon is one of the most famous keelboat classes in the world with long keel and elegant shape. Designed by Norwegian Johan Anker from Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club in 1929, the Dragon is very popular till today. This wooden yacht replica perfectly brings the beauty of one-design keelboat on a miniature scale, allowing owners to proudly display a patriotic tribute in any room or office. Key features of the 60cm Dragon model sailing boat:
About the 1929 Dragon yacht Designed by Norwegian Johan Anker from Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club in 1929, the Dragon was made an Olympic class in 1948 and remained one until 1972, since when the elegant and distinctive keelboat has continued to be popular, offering good competition for a broad spread of abilities. The Dragon’s philosophy of gradual evolution within one-design principles has produced a boat with state of the art rig and boat handling controls, reducing the learning curve for sailors transferring from other classes and making the boat flexible enough to cater for every level of ability. It remains one of the few top level racing classes where sailing skills still predominate over crew weight and fitness. These are just some of the reasons why yachtsmen of every age and every standard are attracted to the Dragon. One sail is enough to make Dragon ownership the goal of many sailors’ racing careers, while for others the class provides a lifetime of challenges. The International Dragon is a truly thoroughbred racing yacht.

Follow us on© 2024 Seacraft Gallery. All Rights Reserved. Website Designed by Bocain Designs International DragonThe International Dragon. T he Dragon is a good looking, long keel yacht originally designed in 1929 in Norway and in 1949 was adopted for the Olympics until 1972. One of the more famous yachts is Bluebottle owned by Prince Phillip. Originally built entirely from wood the yacht has evolved over the years and modern Dragons are now manufactured in GRP with options for a teak deck. The yachts' good looks, long keel design, practicality and continued popularity with the sailing fraternity make the Dragon an ideal addition to the J Class range. Further, for some time now I've been thinking of developing my ideas for a genoa rig and the Dragon has afforded me the ideal opportunity to create a model which from the outset is designed to fly an overlapping genoa foresail. Our usual models define themselves as "models" primarily as our foresails are supported by a boom, normally mounted to the deck aft of the tack of the sail. This improves the sails efficiency but there are no full sized yachts (to my knowledge) that use a boom under the foresail except where a spinnaker is deployed. My objective is to create a model which is more a smaller version of the full sized yacht than a "model" in the hope that such a model will deliver something closer to the experience of sailing a full sized yacht. I have experimented with a genoa in a larger 72 inch hull (see under "projects" on this site) with excellent results. The model is fast, sails well and looks spectacular! The Dragon, with its large hatch opening (the "cubby") gives good access and this considerably simplifies the engineered element of the sheeting system. The Dragon has a classic look to it and the k eel line, similar to a J boat, should be as slippery through weed. The model has an overall length of just under 60 inches, beam of 13 inches and a draft of about 9 inches. The deck shown here is cut to size but as yet without the laser etched detail. The etching for the king plank will be deeper so contrasting stains can be used without the risk of bleeding across. As I write this, the moulds are complete, the parts that require engineering are finished to allow me to build the first ten models and I have started to build up the first model to test. When testing is complete I will "launch" the model on the market as a Ready to Run and I will consider a kit version in due course. The model is expensive to build as one of my objectives has been to create a model with a superlative finish and fine engineering detail. The cost of the completed model will reflect the overall finish... If you would like more information then get in touch! This picture shows the hull with rudder fitted, the internal woodwork in place and the sub deck resting in the hull. This fibreglass moulding supports the upstand for the cubby, the genoa tack and genoa carriages. The subdeck is used on the model with a wood deck finish. The finished model will be offered with two deck options, a wood deck with etched planking detail or a fibreglass deck. This copies the evolution of the dragon in recent years which is currently available with either fibreglass or wood deck finishes. The fibreglass deck will mimic the anti-slip finish on full sized yachts. The internal servo deck is a single laminated item to which all the working parts of the model are fitted. The shrouds pass through the deck and attached inside the hull to avoid chaffing the lose sheeting to the clew of the genoa. The 8.5kg ballast (not shown) is moulded in two parts and the keel line is faithful to the original yacht. I anticipate that this model will be available in limited numbers only so if you are interested in either Ready to Run or kit form then it would be helpful if you could register your interest by dropping me an email, [email protected] Rose City Model Sailing Club Dragon Force 65DESIGN RULESA one design r/c model racing yacht, the 25.8″ Dragon Force 65 was a modified RG65 Class boat derived from Mark Dick’s narrow hull RG65 ICE design. The Dragon Force features an ABS molded hull, profiled aluminum fin, molded plastic rudder, shroudless rig, carbon mast and booms, ball raced kicker/gooseneck fitting, and watertight construction. Joysway (the manufacturer) provides the Dragon Force as a near complete model requiring only assembly of the standing rigging and deck sail control lines (an A Rig is supplied), installation of keel and rudder, and addition of batteries. Electronics are installed, and a boat stand and radio/transmitter are included. The Dragon Force 65 is the work of designers Mike Weston, John Tushingham and Mark Dicks who began collaborating with Joysway in 2011 to develop a high performing but inexpensive r/c model racing yacht. Time constraints on the project required the design team to adopt an existing class/design that had already demonstrated serious performance, and to modify the design to make it affordable. The RG65 (a developmental class) “ICE” design was considered the best candidate. To insure close performance sailing and modest cost, restricted design rules would also be required. The result was the one design Dragon Force 65 introduced in 2013. The Dragon Force 65 is already sailed worldwide with large followings around the world. The Dragon Force 65 Class Rules require the boat to be raced “as supplied by” the manufacturer with no modifications except those articulated in the rules as “permitted changes.” A+, A, B and C Rigs are permissible (dimensions are provided), as are after market sails. Some substitution of electronic equipment and rigging materials is allowed as well. A number of the permitted changes improve the integrity (reliability) of the sailboat, and were added as the design team improved the manufactured product (Dragon Force 65 Version 6 is now on the market). Work on improving the Dragon Force is ongoing, and additional allowable modifications are published as “Hints & Tips”. Text of these is available at the UK Dragon Force 65 web site. An excellent illustrated version of the “ Hints & Tips ” is provided by Abersoch Boatyards in the UK. The Dragon Class Archive Over 90 Years of History at your Fingertips Explore the Dragon Class Builders. Over 300 boatbuilders have tried their hand at the Dragon, principally in its earlier, wooden, days. Some only built one Dragon but several built 100s and many built dozens. The class owes a particular debt to Borge Børresen, who managed the construction transition from wood to GRP immaculately so that both constructions competed, and still do, on equal terms. Other builders who were particularly successful internationally with wooden boats include Anker & Jensen, Pedersen & Thuesen, Abeking & Rasmussen, Bjarne Aas and Savell. Since the introduction of GRP construction Petticrows have taken the lead from Borresen as the major builder in the class, followed by others such as Doomernik and Vejle Yacht Services. During the 1980s Peter Wilson also built a number of GRP boats in the UK. The competition among builders, sailmakers and sailors has meant that equipment has been continuously improved so that a modern Dragon is now one of the most sophisticated racing boats to be found.
