Rolex Sydney Hobart: Koomooloo abandoned
Mike freebairn's queensland yacht, ray white koomooloo, put out a mayday on december 27 advising they were taking on water and needed urgent assistance.
The Kaufman 41 with a varnished mahogany hull was approximately 70 miles off Narooma.
The British steel yacht Adventure, skippered by Charles Roberts took Koomooloo's eight crew on board. Adventure, a 20.42 metre yacht on her first ever race to Hobart, was originally built as a BT Challenge entry. The British Army has taken over Adventure as a training vessel for an around the world adventure. The Rolex Sydney Hobart was part of the 10-leg voyage.
A devastated Freebairn, talking by phone on Adventure said: "We were travelling comfortably under full main and No. 3 headsail. We were experiencing 22-28 knot winds on six metre seas -- but we were fine."
"We came hard off a wave and water started coming in. We ripped up all the floor boards to see where the water was coming in, but couldn't locate the problem, so started bailing for a while."
The crew immediately tacked the boat and made course for the nearest land but no matter how much bailing they did they just couldn't keep up with the influx of water.
"We decided to abandon the boat for crew safety reasons. We did everything we could to try to save the boat. The last sighting I had of her, she was still afloat; we did not open the sea cocks," he said.
Koomooloo, the 1968 winner of the Sydney Hobart, has been part of the Fairbairn family for 10 years and together they restored every nut and bolt but never took away the essence of what she preserved.

Skipper 1968 Sydney Hobart winner Koomooloo today had to abandon ship off NSW south coast 27/12/06
The skipper of the 1968 Sydney Hobart overall winner Ray White Koomooloo today stepped off the love of his life which was sinking off the NSW south coast after being holed during the Rolex Sydney Hobart.
A guttered Mike Freebairn, who was safely aboard the British yacht Adventure, also a competitor in the Rolex Sydney Hobart, with his crew after a lifeboat transfer from the sinking vessel, described the heart wrenching decision to step off the boat.
Commenting Freebairn said: “We did everything we could to save the boat?We are all pretty devastated. It’s been my life for ten years. We’ve restored every nut and bolt.”
In around 22 knots of south westerly breeze, Ray White Koomooloo fell off a backless wave in lumpy seas. Freebairn continued: “The water started coming in. We started ripping up the floor boards trying to find where the water was coming in. We couldn’t locate the problem. We started bailing for a while, then I decided for the safety of the crew that we’d better abandon? We thought the boat was pretty solid.
When Freebairn and his crew transferred to Adventure, Ray White Koomooloo was still floating but Mike wasn’t expecting the Kaufman 41 to remain afloat for much longer.
Freebairn praised the crew on Adventure for their assistance during the crew recovery. Adventure will not be penalised for assisting Ray White Koomooloo. When they reach Hobart they have the option of putting in a request for redress which will go to the International Jury to decide how much time to award.
At approximately 1300hours this afternoon the police launch Alert successfully picked up the eight crew from Ray White Koomooloo and they are now on route to pick up a crewmember of another former winner of this race, Graham Jackson’s Illusion.
Illusion was diverting to Eden to drop off the injured crew person, however, now the police launch is in the vicinity, instead they will collect the crewman with cracked ribs and deliver him and the Ray White Koomooloo crew to Eden.

A classic timber ocean racing yacht of the late 1960s, Koomooloo won the 1968 Sydney Hobart on corrected time and twice represented Australia at the Admiral's Cup. After being painstakingly restored to her best, Koomooloo made her ocean racing comeback in last year's Rolex Sydney Hobart but retired from the race in the heavy conditions.
Koomooloo needs no introduction to followers of the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race having won the event in 1968. She has also been a member of the last two Australian Admiral's Cup Teams. Having her first race to Hobart with her new owner in charge Koomooloo must still be considered one of the favourites.

At 12 minutes past noon today, a beautiful varnished timber yacht sailed back into the winner's circle of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race after an absence of 37 years.
It was one of the last racing yachts to be built in cold moulded timber construction.
