Top 15 Trawlers for 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • October 13, 2023

For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Nordhavn 96 : Built for an owner who desired to self-sufficiently while cruising the world, literally.
  • Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 : This trawler can travel nonstop for 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Kadey-Krogen 52 : This twin-engine-capable, all-oceans trawler is a solid fit for voyaging cruising couples.
  • Bering Yachts B76 : The B76 is the builder’s first fully custom trawler in this size range.
  • Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge : This vessel is equally comfortable at a 7-knot stroll or an 18-knot jog.
  • Beneteau 48 Swift Trawler : Based on the builder’s Swift Trawler 47, this yacht has a resin-infused fiberglass hull.
  • Kadey-Krogen 50 Open : The 50 Open can cruise at 6 knots nonstop for 5,000 nautical miles.
  • Outer Reef 620 Trident : It has a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels.
  • Grand Banks 60 Skylounge : This yacht is efficient across a variety of cruising speeds.
  • Krogen Express 52 : Headroom to spare, two staterooms, a chef-ready galley and long range define this trawler yacht.
  • Grand Banks 85 Skylounge : Grand Banks’ V-warp hull form makes for a level running attitude, seakindliness and long range.
  • Vicem Yachts 82 Classic : Construction is in cold-molded, strip-planked mahogany with epoxy.
  • Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht : Power on this Outer Reef is a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels.
  • Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot : Did someone say this is a 20-knot Nordhavn?
  • Marlow 58E : A high level of customization and admirable performance are at the heart of the Marlow 58E.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels . The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Bering Yachts B76

Lemanja  is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Vicem 82 Classic Flybridge

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels . The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

HELMSMAN TRAWLERS®  are solidly built and finely-crafted motor yachts. Models range from the pocket trawler class Helmsman 31 sedan to our new Expedition 46 Pilothouse.  Helmsman Trawlers’ pilothouse and sedan trawler yacht designs provide roomy and comfortable interiors, rich in fine woodwork and evocative of classic yachts while modern in every way -- and suited for both cruisers and liveaboards.

Helmsman Trawlers® are crafted to please the most discerning owners, though are surprisingly affordable. With modern wide-beam hull designs, top name equipment, and fit-and-finish achievable only with labor-intensive craftsmanship, they are a prize choice for those who won’t compromise quality but have no desire to pay too much. The Helmsman Trawlers® factory has considerable experience in the construction of these fine yachts, offers many options, and can expertly accommodate custom modifications.

The hulls of Helmsman Trawlers are robustly constructed of solid fiberglass using modern fiberglass hull construction techniques. Other FRP elements are manufactured using vacuum infusion. Full keels provide capable sea-keeping ability and modern diesel engines provide dependable long-range performance and trouble-free maintenance. Multi-layered construction of interior decks with sound attenuating elements reduce engine noise, and new insulation in our 38E and 43 models helps control temperature and deadens exterior sounds.

Helmsman Trawlers® most popular yacht is the 38E Pilothouse Trawler. This boat offers the spaciousness of a much larger boat while fitting into a 40-foot slip. The low-rise pilothouse has excellent visibility and open communication with the salon and is a social area too while underway or in port. The full-beam salon is expansive and comfortable, with exceptional light and ventilation. A day head is a rare and practical feature, and the convertible settee and day head can be enclosed to provide a private suite for guests when needed. The flybridge is set back to maintain a low profile – which benefits windage and center-of-gravity. A high, flush bow, sturdy railings, full covered cockpit, deep pilothouse side deck footwells and secure flybridge stairs on both sides increase practicality and safety in adverse conditions.

The Helmsman Trawlers 43 Pilothouse is in steady production. This yacht design is derived from our 38 Pilothouse Trawler and expanded in every dimension. With the additional volume achieved from a longer and wider hull and additional freeboard we’ve added a second stateroom, expanded the salon, added more interior seating, and increased the cockpit area.

We are pleased to offer the Helmsman Trawlers® 31 Sedan – an update to the original Camano 31. The Camano, with over 270 built, is well-known for many reasons including its outstanding hull design with great sea-keeping characteristics and economy through a wide range of cruising speeds. Helmsman Trawlers® has updated the lines on this boat, completely redesigned the interior, and has created a true pocket trawler yacht offered at an affordable price.

The Helmsman Trawlers® 37 is built on the same hull as the 38E and is available in one or two stateroom versions for cruisers who prefer the classic Europa-style lines and walkaround decks.

We are also excited to introduce the Helmsman Trawlers®46 Expedition Pilothouse – an expedition trawler yacht for the long-range cruiser and explorer.

We appreciate your interest in Helmsman Trawlers®. Please feel free to contact us – we wish to be helpful in any way and welcome the opportunity to talk about these fine trawler yachts.

Best Trawler Yacht Brands for Bluewater Adventures

16th nov 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

The rise of the trawler yacht is one of the most exciting developments in the boating industry in decades. It has opened the world of long-range travel to those who don’t care to sail and whose budget doesn’t run to a superyacht or explorer yacht. It has actually filled a gap that we didn’t even realize we desperately needed. Imagine being able to cruise the world in comfort on a yacht under 60 feet, or even under 40 feet. Or being able to cruise across blue water, with several guests staying aboard, to far-flung destinations on a yacht the size of a cabin cruiser.

Trawler yachts are almost an oxymoron—the idea of a sturdy and functional fishing trawler being a luxury yacht would once have been laughable. But today that’s exactly what these robust, spacious, and elegant long-range cruisers are. Here we take a look at our pick of some of the best trawler yacht brands on the market;

A Complete Guide to Trawler Boats: All You Need to Know!

John Sampson

If you’re looking for a dedicated fishing vessel for use at sea, the trawler is your best option. This vessel suits ocean-going fishing experiences thanks to its longer length, powerful motors, and deep hull. The trawler is similar to the motor yacht, with a shorter length and a design catering to anglers.

These models are ideal for spending days or weeks out on the water, giving you everything you need for the longest fishing trips. These models come with plenty of storage space for all your gear and room for plenty of fish.

Traditionally, the trawler is a working vessel used by fisheries. However, in recent years, boat manufacturers started producing designs suitable for the private market. Many models come with luxury fittings and living areas aboard the vessel, allowing you to live the life aquatic with all your creature comforts.

Many modern trawlers feature a full-displacement hull with a weighted keel, while others utilize a semi-displacement hull variation. The full-displacement model is ideal for moving through the water rather than on top of the surface. They make seaworthy vessels, but they are slower than the semi-displacement models.

The semi-displacement hull design also provides a low riding position on the water compared to other fishing boats . However, they rely on planning through the water rather than pushing through it. One design element that links both full and semi-displacement models is the distinctive look of the boat.

What Is a Trawler?

A Trawler is an ocean-going fishing boat provides a full or semi-displacement hull ideal with a ballasted design offering you excellent economy as the boat planes through the water.

As a result, they are suitable for long trips, spending days or weeks out on the water between refueling.

The trawler is ideal for slow cursing along the coastline, and it has the capability to reach deepwater offshore. As a result, it’s a great choice for deep-sea fishing, with all the accessories, including fighting chairs, to land large game fish.

The trawler provides the passengers with accommodations in the lower deck, with v-berths extending through the vessel’s bow. The quality of the berth depends on the price tag of the boat. Some trawler models come with fittings and accommodations that are similar to high-end motor yachts, offering a luxurious time out on the water.

Other models may have fewer luxury finishes, but they offer generous spaces for sleeping. The type of finishes and fittings in these boats determine the price tag. Models can cost anywhere from $100,000 to over $1-million, depending on the size of the vessel and the quality of the customizations made to the boat.

Since these boats are large, they don’t suit trailering, and if you need to remove them from the water, you’re going to have to hire a professional transportation service to take the boat to the shipyard for repairs or to other launch areas on the coastline.

Some models may also have the capability to launch a small dinghy to reach the shore, allowing you to leave the boat on the water, anchored in place. There are cranes on board the boat to launch the tender into the water.

The trawler comes in a range of sizes, with 50-foot models being the most common choice. Boats smaller than 50-feet in length won’t offer you the same level of stability as the larger models, and the semi-displacement hull may cause smaller models to bounce up and down on the water –  not ideal if you’re sensitive to seas sickness.

Benefits of Trawlers

The trawler has several benefits as a fishing boat. Here are the top reasons for investing in one of these fishing vessels.

The longer models with full-displacement hulls offer you exceptional stability in the water, even in rough swell conditions. The hull displaces the water, allowing the boat to plane through the water at lower speeds.

Extended Range

The trawler boat is the ideal choice for reaching remote fishing locations and for extended fishing trips where you want to stay out on the ocean for days or weeks at a time. They have a fantastic range, with large fuel tanks and diesel engines providing excellent economy for longer trips at sea.

Live Aboard Accommodations

Trawlers are large boats, and they offer you plenty of room. All models come with liveaboard accommodations for fishing crews. These boats have enough space for up to 12-people or more, depending on the size of the vessel.

The type of accommodations can vary widely depending on the size of the boat, the manufacturing brand, and the price tag of the boat. Some models are like floating hotels, offering you the same luxury accommodations you would expect to find on a high-end motor yacht .

Full Amenities

Most models come with complete kitchens, full bathrooms, and several sleeping quarters. You get luxuries like microwaves and refrigerators for storing your food and perishables. Most models will have four-burner stoves featuring gas-powered operation and onboard gas tanks for power or trickle battery chargers to ensure you never run out of power at sea.

The trawler is second only to the motor yacht in terms of its luxury liveaboard accommodations. Cabin cruisers and some pontoon boats are close competitors, but you don’t get the extended range and offshore capabilities that you get with a trawler.

Nordhavn Trawler Cabin

Plenty of Customizations

The customizations and accessories are huge for trawlers, and you could end up spending as much as 40% of the sticker price on the customizations and fittings you make to your boat. Make sure you enquire about the costs of the customizations with your sales agent. Look for boats offering you the best range of standard customizations to avoid breaking your budget.

Many models come with split-level designs featuring triple stories with captain’s decks on the top, lounge areas in the mezzanine deck, and sleeping accommodations at the bottom of the vessel. The hull will typically also cater to large fish storage areas with ice machines and cold rooms.

Good Fuel Economy

The trawler operates on diesel motors, allowing for better economy and longer trips at sea. The range on these boats is excellent, allowing you to take long seafaring journeys to remote fishing spots.

Sealed Cockpits and Air-Conditioning

You get a captain’s deck positioned high on the boat for a better view of the water and the horizon. Some models come with sealed cockpits, including air conditioning to keep you cool on hot, humid days. All the sleeping quarters will usually include air conditioning units for a comfortable night’s rest out at sea.

Walk-Around Decks

The trawler allows you to reach all sides of the boat, and they come with a walk-around design that’s easy for the angler to navigate as they fight fish swimming under the boat .

Fishing Capabilities

Trawlers come with all the bells and whistles you need for your fishing trips. You get full electronics setups, including GPS and fish finders , as well as communications for reaching the coast guard and other vessels on the water.

These vessels also include fighting chairs, rod holders, rod racks, and plenty of storage for your gear all over the boat.

Disadvantages of Trawlers

The trawler is a fantastic boat for offshore fishing, but it comes with a few limitations some people may see as drawbacks.

No Watersports Capability

The trawler is a purpose-built design for fishing, and you don’t have any options for watersports with this model. Some boats may come with jet skis for reaching land and enjoying water sports or spearfishing out on the open ocean or at reef atolls.

Limited Speed and Handling

The trawler is a slow-moving boat designed for economy and cruising, not performance. The handling is good and smooth in the water. However, don’t expect to make any high-performance turns or reach high speeds with this model.

Not Trailerable

The sheer size of these vessels makes them unsuitable for trailering. You’ll have to organize a slip at your local marina for storing your boat when not in use, which adds to the vessel’s running costs. The motors are also expensive to repair since they have an internally mounted design.

Expensive to Maintain

The maintenance costs for your trawler can get expensive, especially in the luxury models with larger motors. As mentioned, you’ll have extra costs to consider, such as slip fees, when purchasing one of these boats.

Top Trawler Brands and Models

There are dozens of boat manufacturing brands and trawler models to choose from when selecting your boat. Here are our top picks for the best trawlers available.

Grand Banks

Grand Banks is one of the most established brands in the world for fishing trawlers. The Beneteau Swift is a top-rated model from one of the world’s best trawler, sailboat, and powerboat brands.

Beneteau Swift

This trawler model includes a semi-displacement hull for better stability and smoother operation at sea, and you get plenty of spacious accommodations on the lower deck and mezzanine level of the boat . Beneteau takes incredible attention to detail with their vessels, giving you a model that’s luxurious and versatile.

The Selene is another fantastic choice for your trawler. The company has its headquarters in China, but don’t let that fool you – these boats are functional, with high-quality design and materials. The Selene is available in a range of lengths from 42′ to 92′, with nine models available.

Selene

You get excellent standard features with this boat, including stern and bow thrusters, a lightweight fiberglass design, and easy maintenance.

Wrapping Up

The trawler is a great choice for dedicated anglers looking for an offshore model. Due to the price of these boats, many private owners choose to opt for smaller models like cabin cruisers . You get the same functionality as the trawler with better handling and a much lower price tag.

The trawler is a good choice if you’re thinking about starting an offshore deep seas fishing company where you take people out onto the water for fishing trips. The trawler is the ideal model for these excursions, allowing tour operators to accommodate as many people as possible for a profitable fishing trip.

However, if you’re a private owner, you can use the trawler for a range of activities, from deep-sea fishing to cruising between islands in the Caribbean or the Keys.

Sirena is quickly making a name for itself when it comes to building fast, modern trawler yachts. Could the Sirena 68 be its best model yet?

Some boats just feel right from the moment you step on board. Whether it’s the choice of materials or the cohesiveness of the layout, there are times when after the first few paces around the bathing platform and cockpit you suspect that the boat you’re standing on is well sorted. The Sirena 68 is one of those boats.

It should be good. Not only does it share a hull with its excellent predecessor, the 64, but Sirena called upon the expertise of two powerhouses of the naval architecture world in Dutch studio Cor D. Rover and Argentinian Germán Frers.

Both have designed for the superyacht sector so maybe it should come as no surprise that the boat feels 10ft longer than it actually is.

The tone is set at the stern where there is a hydraulic bathing platform so large that you could mount a decent tender on it and still have plenty of space to move around, and a suitably tall door set into the transom that opens to reveal a crew space that will no doubt be the envy of crews living aboard almost every other 70-footer.

We often say that crew cabins on boats like this could qualify as guest cabins but here it truly is the case.

Azimut 68 test drive review: An express cruiser with real class

£1754349

Headroom is excellent and with an attractive galley and mess area it’s so much more than just a couple of single berths and a cramped bathroom.

Crank open a watertight door to find the engineroom, which is immaculately engineered and laid out in such a way that access to daily service items on the Volvo Penta D13 blocks couldn’t be easier.

The Sirena 68 is a Category A semi-displacement cruiser with a fuel capacity of over 5,000 litres. It means business and you can tell as much from the quality of the engine installation.

Driving the Sirena 68

We caught up with the Sirena 68 during the Cannes Yachting Festival so, as is the way with these things, there was little time to appreciate the machinery before it was fired up and we were fighting our way out of the harbour with the throng of other craft on their last sea trials of the day.

Testing from Cannes always throws up unique circumstances, the most obvious of which is the number of people on board. The Sirena 68 is certified to safely carry the 14 people, including journos and crew, that we had on board but I would bet that it won’t host that many the majority of the time.

And this being a press sea trial most of those bodies were up on the flybridge , huddled around the helm in order to harvest the performance data pouring out of the MFDs.

sirena-68-review-flybridge

Despite the extraordinary load the Sirena 68 had to deal with on its top deck it coped impressively well, even if the top speed was a little down on the yard’s quoted 28-knot maximum. No great surprise given the load, near-full fuel and water tanks and high water temperatures of the Med.

The overriding feeling from the helm of the Sirena 68 is one of unwavering solidity. The hull is a vinylester resin-infused sandwich construction with a manufacturer 5-year warranty against osmosis.

Frers’ semi-displacement hull design is an absolute peach, deftly blending sure-footed and planted straight-line cruising with a keenness to the handling that comes as a pleasant surprise on a boat of this type.

sirena-68-review-bathing-platform

“It feels right from the moment you step on board, and just gets better and better”

The 3/4 length keel does a fine job of keeping the boat on course when you just want to sit back and cruise, but dial in some lock, and the well weighted fly-by-wire steering hooks the boat back on itself in a tidy arc.

The upper helm is a deeply pleasant place to sit, the plush helm seats alone are enough to coax out an “ahhh” as you relax into them. At first glance the twin 12in Garmin MFDs appear too far away and if they were just touch-screens they would be.

But there is a little pod that sprouts up from the deck next to the helm seat that is inset with a pair of cup holders and home to a remote control panel so you can flick between the screens without having to peel your back off of the sumptuous backrests.

sirena-68-review-upper-galley

Punchy performance

There are two Volvo Penta engine options that use the same block with either 900 or 1,000hp each. I would think pretty much every Sirena 68 will be built with the larger versions, which offer gutsy performance and impressive fuel economy throughout the rev range.

A good semi-displacement hull really can be all things to all people, as the 68 demonstrates with a top speed of 25 knots and fast cruising range of 320 miles (with 20% in reserve) at 21 knots. Drop that speed back to 9 knots, however, and the range jumps up to nearly 1,000nm with the same reserve in place.

The engines deliver punch when you want it and are particularly throaty around the marina as you nudge them in and out of gear, but settle down into single-figure cruising speeds and the Sirena 68 transforms into an excellent long distance companion.

sirena-68-review-lower-helm

If hard yards – especially at night – are what you’re doing then in reality it’s the lower helm that will be seeing most of the action and sitting here is no chore either.

The imposing dashboard is great to look at, even if the lower dash is a bit of a melange of various control panels, and with the same super comfortable chair as upstairs, long stints in the saddle shouldn’t be an issue.

There is only one chair at the lower helm as standard but a clever forward-facing bench and table arrangement to starboard allow a couple of guests or crew to keep the skipper company on longer legs.

sirena-68-review-navstation

It is on deck where the Sirena 68 most defies its 70ft LOA. The flybridge in particular feels absolutely huge and is fitted with two dinettes and two bars yet still has space spare at its aft end for a couple of sun loungers or bean bags.

The hardtop is a hulking structure supported centrally by the distinctive radar mast, which incorporates an overhead shower, but in constructing it in part from carbon fibre there has at least been an attempt to keep the centre of gravity relatively low.

Aside from the foredeck seating’s generous proportions and clever arrangement with a dinette and two-way backrest on the sun pad it’s the quality of the execution that catches the eye.

sirena-68-review-foredeck

The bulwarks are topped with thick slabs of teak but so are the edges of the seating modules, which also have cupholders and pop-up lights neatly integrated in their surfaces. Up front, there is a chain and deck wash-down system and a large self-draining anchor locker large enough to swallow eight fenders.

Germán Frers has done work for Hallberg-Rassy and Nautor’s Swan in the past and that practical eye informs a lot of what makes the Sirena 68 such a usable cruising boat. It’s a similar story in the cockpit, which is flanked by meaty mooring gear and covered rope bins to tidy away lines.

It’s the sheer amount of room in the cockpit that is most noticeable and the generous amount of floor space between the table and sliding doors that feels so luxurious. A nice touch here is the use of glass in the supports that connect the bulwarks to the flybridge structure, so the view from the cockpit isn’t obscured.

sirena-68-review-wing-station

The aft galley arrangement is bolstered by a lowering glass section, which drops into the deck to create a bar area between the kitchen and cockpit. To starboard, the door slides across to reveal a central walkway into the saloon itself, which emanates the same feeling of quality that is so acutely felt across the outdoor spaces.

It may sound rudimentary, but just the fact that the flooring feels totally solid under foot and doesn’t squeak or groan as you walk across it suggests that the Sirena 68 has been engineered to a high level, as does the quality of the timber throughout.

The boat’s liveaboard intentions are enhanced by domestic-sized appliances in the galley, including a full-height fridge freezer, large dishwasher, four-burner induction hob and a domestic-sized oven.

sirena-68-review-saloon

There isn’t a huge amount of play in terms of layout – this is a production boat after all – but there is the option to replace the single guest cabin to starboard with a pair of bunks and to include a utility room.

As standard there is a neat lobby area that leads into the day heads on the port side of the lower deck, which contains the washer/dryer, an assortment of storage and even a pop-out ironing board.

Yet more evidence that the Sirena 68 is designed to be a home-from-home as much as a boat. The owner’s cabin amidships certainly has the space and luxury to qualify as a bedroom. There is well over 6ft of headroom throughout and a flat floor around the double berth, which is mounted facing-forward on the centreline.

sirena-68-review-owners-cabin

Like most of the Sirena 68, the owner’s cabin feels as though it could be from a larger vessel

Aft of the bed you can either have a full width ensuite with two identical, separate toilets that share an enormous shower in the middle or have the bathroom to port, and a dog-legged walk-in wardrobe to starboard.

I am aware of sounding like a stuck record but the quality of the interior resonates once again, especially the interior doors which clunk shut with such satisfying engineered precision. Fit and finish has always been notably good with Sirena but the 68 feels like a level up from its predecessor.

Carving its own niche

For a relatively new brand Sirena’s progress is remarkable. Building the size of boats it does (the Sirena 68, a Sirena 58 and the flagship Sirena 88 ) there are plenty of well-established brands who can offer stiff competition.

The Turkish yard has been smart, though, and by employing heavyweights to handle design and naval architecture the Sirena 68 feels just as competent and capable as models from those names in the sector with greater brand recognition.

Price as reviewed:

£1,630,000.00 ex. VAT (correct as of Cannes Boat Show 2021)

With these types of ‘soft’ trawler gaining popularity thanks to their semi-displacement range and interior volume, Sirena has carved out a promising niche for itself and hopefully one that can produce models either side of the smallest and largest that it currently builds. As for the Sirena 68, it feels right from the moment you step on board and just gets better and better.

Azimut Magellano 66 Review (2023 Edition)

Elegant yet tough, with full liveaboard luxury and serious cruising ability to boot; this new 66 charts an impressive new course for the Magellano range.

Azimut Magellano 66 Review (2023 Edition) image 1

The trawler-inspired liveaboard Magellano range might be the quiet partner in Azimut’s usually outspoken fleet, but with a recent design boost from Ken Freivokh, these serious cruisers are now finding their feet, creating an impressive mix of style and substance. The latest 66 model, offering owner or crew operation, is the perfect example of where Magellano is heading and why you need to be along for the ride.

Our Scores Explained

Design & Build

In the presence of Azimut’s S7 sportsbridge or the intelligent 68 flybridge, the Magellano 66 may seem overlooked in terms of style, yet it boasts one of the most attractive exteriors.

Azimut Magellano 66 design

The design of this liveaboard trawler yacht range received a significant boost from Ken Freivokh, known for blending timeless class with modern superyacht substance in his Magellano 25 and 30 Metri designs. While this 66 model adopts Freivokh’s lines, it is distinctly Azimut, with the in-house design team overseeing the boat's creation from the semi-displacement keel up.

While aesthetics are subjective, Azimut's combination of gunboat capability and timeless elegance shines through in this design. The powerful bows maintain their shape moving aft, allowing for a spacious three or four-cabin interior, with a sleek superstructure completing the overall look.

Azimut Magellano 66 design

Beautifully Balanced

The result is one of the most aesthetically pleasing yachts under 21m (70ft). This is significant because, as our competitor analysis demonstrates, much of the next-generation trawler market consists of large, sometimes imposing designs. If you prefer something less imposing, if you appreciate classical lines as much as a spacious owner's cabin, the Magellano offers an ideal balance.

The onboard ambiance of the yacht, from the flybridge to the cabins, is relaxed and comfortable. The focus on living aboard is evident in the open-plan salon and the choice between four cabins or three with a lower utility area. Our test boat included a lower study, demonstrating Azimut's ability to cater to owners in this discerning sector of yacht ownership.

Power is provided by twin MAN i6 850hp engines, delivering speeds of around 24 knots. With a semi-displacement hull and 4,500-liter tanks, the 66 can travel approximately 500nm at 19 knots and a very practical 1,000nm at 10 knots. This means you can explore for an entire week without worrying about refueling.

Interior Accommodation

Throughout the yacht, there's a distinctive vibe. If you're accustomed to the interior of an Azimut flybridge, this boat stands out. While it exudes substance and style, it does so in a more subdued manner. The single-level salon showcases conservative cabinetry and a sleek window design. The deck head is adorned with luxurious wood framing, and the seating, though plush and cozy, is adorned in subtle tones.

Azimut Magellano 66 salon

That attention to detail continues with a nod to trawler traditions. The forward galley, linked to the separate dining area by a charming port-light serving hatch, pays homage to the layout found on old Grand Banks vessels. However, beyond this, the design reflects practical cruising, Italian style. The salon seating is positioned to port, accompanied by a lengthy sideboard to starboard, ideal for storing day cruising essentials. A sleek full-height cabinet near the entrance provides snug storage for glassware, with a refrigerator below ready to cater to guests' needs.

A portion of the sideboard can be replaced with a facing sofa. While this may prove useful for weekend excursions, extra storage will be indispensable for longer voyages.

Azimut Magellano 66 galley

The dining table extends from the port side, offering a splendid view outward. Above, Azimut has incorporated one of its distinctive light fixtures, with its cuboid design complementing the overall finish. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the oversized serving port serves a practical purpose, facilitating easy communication between the galley and guests.

The galley itself has a functional layout, evoking a crewed atmosphere with its semi-enclosed design and side door. This layout is particularly advantageous for those considering running with a crew, as it enables easy movement around the yacht and efficient service to guests without disrupting the salon. Ample storage surrounds the two worktops, with a dedicated section for cold storage. Positioned forward near the windscreens, the hob and oven highlight the importance of the side door for ventilation and preventing steamed-up glass.

Azimut Magellano 66 owners cabin

The galley-forward design leads to the cabins accessed via a stairwell amidships from the salon. This arrangement provides additional stowage space, and the layout is straightforward, with a full-beam stateroom forward, a VIP cabin, and a twin cabin, all with ensuite facilities. The fourth bunked cabin to port appears more suited for use as a dedicated utility and storage room, although there is space for a washing machine along the lower deck companionway, as seen on the boat we observed, with its bespoke lower deck study.

The owner’s stateroom showcases the ambiance of this yacht, with its laid-back style, spacious twin wardrobes, and cabinetry. Despite its practicality, being an Azimut, it boasts textured finishes, subtle lighting, expansive hull side glass, and a charming snug area. While the snug accommodates only a single seat, a sofa might offer more practicality, yet it presents an inviting space that occupants will likely enjoy using.

Azimut Magellano 66 cabins

The cabin enjoys a full-beam layout due to the ensuite being positioned forward, resulting in a surprisingly spacious toilet and shower compartment finished in bright white marble.

Similarly, the VIP cabin boasts a welcoming atmosphere with long strips of hull glass and another impressive ensuite. The twin cabin serves as a cozy retreat, mirroring the high standards of the yacht, perhaps more prominently than anywhere else.

Located off the transom, the crew quarters feature a tidy two-bunk design and ensuite. If opting for a three-cabin layout with utility space, this crew cabin could serve as occasional fourth guest quarters.

Helm Station

The decision to relocate the galley forward influenced the design of the lower helm to some extent, shifting it to the starboard side. Although there isn't a helm side door, a sliding window is present, while the galley offers access via the port deck door. The adjustable leather helm seats, positioned slightly higher, provide an excellent forward view through tall clear screens — even the wipers retract when not in use.

The upright console accommodates two multifunction display screens, along with a bits tray, cup holders, and a leather-bound handrail for the navigator. Throttle and optional joystick controls are neatly situated on their own outboard console.

Azimut Magellano 66 helm

This area is ideal for longer journeys, offering a sense of separation from the rest of the yacht, which is further emphasized by the standard full-height cabinet typically positioned behind the helm. In our boat, a sideboard was included, providing a clear view aft through the salon.

The upper helm features a twin seat and multifunction display layout identical to the lower helm but boasts a practical, minimalist finish that promises durability. With excellent visibility and a reliable wind deflector, the upper helm is perfect for day cruising and is surrounded by guest seating.

The majority of Magellano 66 models sold thus far have opted for the optional hardtop for the flybridge. However, the boat we looked at did not include this feature, allowing us to appreciate the distinguished central mast design that divides the forward guest area from the open aft deck. Positioned beneath the mast, a complete wet bar and grill form an ideal barbecue area. The open aft deck embodies a true trawler characteristic, historically designated for deck storage or a tender. Nonetheless, on modern yachts, it is more common to encounter freestanding furniture in this space.

Azimut Magellano 66 flybridge

The flybridge offers both depth and security, with effortless maneuverability. Notably, a superb rail to port divides the aft and forward sections, ensuring safety. Moving into the guest seating area, ample grab rails provide additional security. The seating layout features a dining area adjacent to the wet bar, complemented by a sun pad wrapping around the forward sections. With the inclusion of twin helm seats, there is seating capacity for approximately twelve people.

The straightforward yet highly functional finish of this boat, indicative of an owner intending to utilize the yacht extensively, omitted optional teak decking to warm up the flybridge. However, various customization options are available, including a hardtop, teak decking, and alternative upholstery, each capable of significantly altering the ambiance of the space.

Azimut Magellano 66 deck

Mainly Impressive

The main deck aft features teak decking, offering a luxurious touch. A spacious U-shaped dining area dominates this space, complemented by stairwells leading down to the standard-fit hydraulic swim platform and bulwark gates for easy alongside boarding.

The side decks are exceptionally well-designed, characterized by their depth and width, ensuring frequent utilization beyond merely securing forward lines. Moving forward, the foredeck lounge presents a welcoming and expansive area. A long stretch of U-shaped seating can be converted into a sizable pad, offering versatility in lounging options. Situated securely within the boat, the lounge is protected by moldings that provide ample storage voids for fenders and lines.

Azimut Magellano 66 design

The deep bulwark extends around the bow, augmented by an additional layer of sturdy guardrails, instilling a sense of safety and manageability to the anchor platform and working deck; ideal for owner operation.

Another noteworthy aspect of the vessel, driven by practicality, is the engine bay. Accessible through a spacious aft deck hatch, the bay boasts clever engineering and offers full-standing headroom for individuals under 6ft. Key service points are conveniently positioned at the forefront, ensuring easy access. Additionally, ancillary equipment such as the hydraulic or freshwater system and the 19kW generator are readily accessible, further enhancing the ease of maintenance and operation.

Value For Money

The Magellano 66 we observed was notable for two reasons. It showcased Azimut's capability to collaborate with an owner to tailor their desired cruising setup, while also indicating an owner less focused on appearances. The standard interior requires minimal additional features, though opting for the optional hard top and teak decking for the flybridge could be considered.

Azimut Magellano 66

The hydraulic package helps to reduce the cost of the stabilizer, which also powers the swim platform and tender launch and recovery system.

Most of the other important options don’t come with a hefty price tag, so you're free to choose the layout and finish that best suits your cruising style.

Hugely subjective statements about this being one of the best-looking boats on the water (it is) aside, what Azimiut has delivered here is exactly what it set out to do. It is not the biggest, nor the most imposing, but it is a boat perfect for liveaboard cruising, with every part of the Magellano designed to look after its owner and do so with a certain understated Italian elegance. The trawler yacht concept has rarely looked or worked better.

Reasons to Buy

  • Superb exterior design
  • Balanced, versatile interior
  • 1,000nm range
  • Decks mix lifestyle and practicality

Things to Consider

  • Position of hob in forward galley

The Magellano is surrounded by big, brutal and voluminous trawler yacht rivals that may not carry the elegance of the Azimut but really deliver onboard and across the waves.

Of these modernist trawlers, the Sirena 68 perhaps enjoys the best balance between boldness and beauty. The Germán Frers design delivers fine lines, and superb decks with a fabulously sociable flybridge and foredeck, and a very spacious three or four-cabin interior. The big, open salon includes an impressive helm station and below decks, the full-beam owner’s cabin can be joined by a  mixture of guest cabins, a lower salon or a pantry. The Sirena will hit 28 knots but can also reach well over 1,000nm at 10 knots.

If modernist design is your thing, Absolute and Numarine offer up unashamedly bold and brutal designs that really pay off onboard.

The Absolute Navetta 68 delivers this Italian builder's always impressive trick of creating multiple suites with a massive forward stateroom and a full-beam VIP amidships, plus two very good guest cabins. On the main deck, the luxurious salon flows onto the aft deck while the flybridge is vast and beautifully appointed. Only slightly smaller, the Absolute Navetta 64 pretty much offers the same package for a little less money.

Ramping up the modernist brutality, the Numarine 22 XP is a bigger boat in every sense. Longer, wider and incredibly imposing it enjoys well over 2ft more in the beam and this is felt below decks with a massive four-cabin layout that can be swapped for an even more decadent three-cabin layout with two vast suites. The salon leads to a wheelhouse-style helm that feels right for a yacht that can reach some 2,000nm on one tank. The design of the yacht creates what is less a flybridge and more a full, superyacht upper deck.

Away from all this brutalist boating architecture, let’s finish with the Outer Reef 620 Trident , a boat that has plenty of the trawler yacht elegance the Magellano enjoys but as a smaller 19m boat can’t match the other rivals on space, with three cabins and a tidy salon. It can, however, deliver a 1,300nm range while still hitting 20 knots at its top end.

Azimut Magellano 66 Layout

Flybridge Azimut Magellano 66

The classic trawler layout keeps the aft deck clear and creates a sociable surround of seating forward. The central mast will normally be obscured by an optional hardtop but creates the structure for a full wet bar and grill

Main Deck Azimut Magellano 66

A lounge and dining area flow across a single-level deck. There is no real connection between inside and out, but the aft deck features a deep seating area while the foredeck lounge is excellent

Lower Deck Azimut Magellano 66

The layout shows the 4th cabin but we understand the optional utility room is more popular with buyers. Our boat featured a bespoke study. The remaining three cabins are all well-proportioned and ensuite. The aft crew area will work as a fourth cabin if you're self-piloting

  FABRICATIONS | PRODUCTS

HELMSMAN TRAWLERS®  are solidly built and finely crafted motor yachts. Models range from the pocket trawler class Helmsman 31 sedan to our new 46 foot raised pilothouse expedition trawler.  Helmsman Trawlers pilothouse and sedan-style trawler yacht designs provide roomy and comfortable interiors rich in fine woodwork evocative of classic trawlers suited for both cruisers and liveaboards. The hulls of Helmsman Trawlers are robustly constructed using modern fiberglass hull construction techniques. Full skeg keels provide capable sea-keeping ability and modern diesel engines provide dependable long-range performance and trouble-free maintenance.

Helmsman Trawlers® are crafted to please the most discerning owners, though are surprisingly affordable. With modern wide-beam hull designs, top name equipment, and warm, contemporary-yet-classic interiors, they are an ideal choice for those who won’t compromise quality but have no desire to pay too much. How is it that our trawlers are substantially less than comparable trawlers? Because Helmsman Trawlers sells factory-direct to the consumer with no dealer markups. The Helmsman Trawlers® factory has considerable experience in the construction of these fine yachts, offers many options, and can expertly accommodate custom modifications.

We are pleased to be offering Helmsman Trawlers to the European market. Helmsman Trawlers built for Europe are CE rated (class B) and the electrical systems are built to specific country requirements. We urge those interested in learning more to contact Ian Sawkins, Helmsman Trawlers' Europe representative.

Helmsman Trawlers® has revised its popular 38 Pilothouse model, with the new designation of   38E Pilothouse.   Modifications to the deck design add an extended cockpit cover, improve rain drip control around the pilothouse roof, and modify the forward window shape and the vessel’s overall appearance. In addition, the   38E   now includes even better engine noise control with additional sound attenuation materials included in the multi-layered construction of all interior floors, and hull insulation to the forward stateroom to dampen exterior noise and improve climate control. We are also pleased to offer a recently revised 43 pilothouse model, the 43E . The 43E has a refined profile and offers many of the same new additions highlighted on the 38E.

We are also excited to introduce the Helmsman Trawlers® 46 Expedition Pilothouse – an expedition trawler yacht for the long-range cruiser and explorer.

We appreciate your interest in Helmsman Trawlers®. Please feel free to contact us, we wish to be helpful in any way and welcome the opportunity to talk about these fine trawler yachts.

Macduff delivers North Sea prawn trawler ‘Forever Faithful’ MkII

by Martin Conway | 4th September 2024 | Ship & Boat International - News

modern trawler yachts

The new 'Forever Faithful' was developed to offer improved hull efficiency compared to its 2016-built predecessor

Macduff Shipyards’ boatbuilding facility in Buckie, Scotland has delivered a new trawler, Forever Faithful , to Peterhead-based fishing boat owner Andrew West. The newbuild – which replaces West’s previous vessel of the same name, built at the Buckie site in 2016 – will be used to net prawns in the North Sea.

The new Forever Faithful was jointly designed by the yard and Macduff Ship Design. In the vessel’s initial design phase, Southampton University’s Wolfson Unit ran a CFD case study of two hullforms: the first being that of the original Forever Faithful ; the second, a new concept model featuring: “increased length; a gradual bustle forward of the propeller; and a unique stem where the bulbous bow was not fully submerged, but rather tapered gradually into the bow’s upper region”, Macduff Ship Design explains. The case study indicated a significant reduction in hull resistance at the two test speeds (8knots and 10knots), with the new vessel steaming 1knot faster at full power than the original vessel, both on the same engine. “This increase in hull efficiency enables the owner to run the engine at a lower loading to save fuel…and reduce emissions,” says Macduff Ship Design.

Forever Faithful has a steel hull with a double chine hullform, while the wheelhouse and mast are fashioned from aluminium. The vessel measures 22.75m in overall length, 7.6m in beam and 4.15m in depth, and has a hold capacity of 600 boxes. The trawler also has the capacity for six to eight crew members, plus 25,000litres of fuel oil and 13,000litres of fresh water.

Power is derived from a single Caterpillar C18 main engine with a power output of just over 447kW. The engine is fitted with an SCR unit and a urea pumping system, to comply with IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The trawler has also been fitted with a Masson Marine W6000 gearbox with a 10:1 reduction. Macduff Ship Design says: “This gearbox allowed the yard to fit a 2.5m-diameter propeller, fitted within a modern-profile nozzle duct – providing high thrust at low speeds, but also a slight increase of thrust at steaming speeds compared to the previous vessel.” This set-up grants the trawler a speed of 10knots. Additionally, in sea trials, the 35dB reduction SCR silencer was shown to help reduce noise levels throughout the 224gt boat.

The trawler’s hydraulic deck machinery package includes a triple barrel winch with a Hagglunds CA210 motor, plus two split net drums featuring twin Hagglunds CA70 motors per drum. Thistle Marine supplied the boat’s MFB8 landing crane and MBK7 power block crane. A Doosan/Hyundai 4AD086 auxiliary engine, rated 199kW, provides the vessel’s primary hydraulic power.

When the catch has been lifted on board, it is moved by hydraulic conveyor to the working deck, to be sorted and washed. “Once washed, the catch is packed at the forward end of the working deck before being taken into a blast room on the forward port side, where the prawns are frozen at -35° C to -40° C for around four to six hours,” Macduff Ship Design explains. The blast room can store up to 1,000kg of packed product. Once frozen, the product is lowered into the cold store – situated directly below, in the aft section of the hold – until it is offloaded on shore.

Macduff Ship Design says: “A bulkhead divides the fish hold into two. The forward part of the hold is arranged as a traditional wet fish hold with its own chilling system, capable of holding around 250 boxes of chilled fish.” All of the freezing and refrigeration systems in the hold were supplied by Premier Refrigeration.
