The best boat bars in NYC for water-top sips and snacks

All aboard! Make like the captain and gather your crew on NYC's best boat bars

Amber Sutherland-Namako

The only places that offer even better views than New York City’s best waterfront restaurants  are our water- top restaurants: yes, we're talking about those scenic boat bars and floating eateries that give off that breezy yachting lifestyle —but without the  high price and pesky barnacles that stow away on an actual watercraft. Mostly only open seasonally, they’re peak spring and summer destinations with the warm-weather menus to match, all with a side of real-deal seafaring. So ahoy! New York's best boat bars  will rise the tide for all your going-out plans this season.

RECOMMENDED: The 27 best outdoor bars in NYC

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The best boat bars in NYC

1.  baylander steel beach.

Baylander Steel Beach

Funnily enough, this enormous West Harlem piers venue was previously the world’s smallest aircraft carrier. Choose from its long list shareables like  guacamole and chips, saucy chicken wings and firecracker calamari, and mains like lobster rolls, Cuban sandwiches and foot-long hot dogs , plus all manner of drinks. Time Out Tip: At Baylander, it’s not uncommon to overhear the phrase, “Excuse me, what is that drink in your hand?” More likely than not, they are talking about “That Patron Drink," a 24-ounce margarita filled with Patron reposado tequila, Patron citronge, fresh watermelon purée and lime juice.

2.  The Frying Pan

  • price 2 of 4

The Frying Pan

In 1929, this very structure was constructed as a lightship—like a light house with one obvious difference. It was stationed off the coast of North Carolina until 1965. It was eventually abandoned and even sank before it was raised once more and repurposed as the Frying Pan as we know it in 1989. Its 2024 menu includes all the expected boat bar bites and plenty of sips to pair them with.  Time Out Tip: Become the envy of the open seas and order a pitcher of the Spicy Watermelon Rita with 21 seeds cucumber jalapeño tequila, watermelon fresca and lime.

3.  Grand Banks

Grand Banks

Crew hospitality group’s original boat bar is a darling schooner, docked in Tribeca on the Hudson River. B eckoning guests with the cheery yellow and white over its long, U-shaped bar, the vessel offers oysters, seafood-focused entrees like lobster rolls and soft-shell crab, a $75 caviar service and fittingly nautical cocktails, as well as wine and beer.  Crew also runs other maritime-themed spots on land and sea elsewhere around town.   Time Out Tip: Drink like the skipper and order the Captains Courageous. Crafted with Aperol, pineapple and lemon, this whiskey-forward cocktail features a limited-edition, single barrel straight rye whiskey made in collaboration with  New York Distilling Co  and the venue itself.

4.  The Honorable William Wall

The Honorable William Wall

Although its technical address is in New Jersey, who is to say what truly lies where, once water whirls beneath? The Manhattan Yacht Club's "floating clubhouse" can be reached by rail, road and ferry, in any case. Seatings are timed and advance tickets are recommended, as the space's capacity is a firm 149. Guests are welcome to pack picnics, but drinks must be purchased on board.  Time Out Tip: Speaking of drinks, the offerings at the open-air bar are pretty straightforward with wells and beers served up in plastic cups. But to get into the spirit of the sailboat races in the waters down below, we recommend getting the Lucky Dog pilsner beer from the Manhattan Yacht Club.

5.  North River Lobster Company

  • Hell's Kitchen

North River Lobster Company

One of the area’s few boat bars that actually moves, North River is a crustacean cruise on the Hudson. First decide on a one or two-hour block, then choose from five types of lobster rolls — including the Insta-famous, 28-inch The Shelley sandwich — as many raw bar items, snacks derived from land and oodles of booze.

Time Out Tip: If you opted for the two-hour excursion, go big and order the 24-ounce Batten Down the Hatches with two types of rum, pineapple and citrus. Shotskis are available if you want to get #shipfaced with your crew.

6.  Pilot

Pilot

Docked near the southern end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pilot’s as romantic as postcards between sweethearts, impromptu slow dances and amicable prenups. The 147-foot, 1920s schooner looks out on the East River and lower Manhattan skyline, with a seafood-forward menu and color scheme that's similar to its sibling vessel, Grand Banks.    Time Out Tip:  If you are going for oysters (which you should be), go for a glass of bubbly or pair it with the Lil Shucker kolsch from Sixpoint Brewery.

How New York Cocktail Company Is Reimagining The Ready-To-Serve Negroni

Over the years, Negroni Week has grown into a major event—especially as the Italian drink itself has surged in global cocktail scene.

New York Cocktail Company's Chocolate Negroni ready-to-drink mix.

Negroni Week, which has become an annual week-long event since it was first established by Imbibe Magazine in 2013, is now an international celebration of the beloved Italian cocktail.

Ahead of this year’s event, New York Cocktail Company (NYCC) launched a collection of Negroni variations that capitalize on the recent surge in ready-to-drink beverages—touted by market research firm IWSR as the “star” of the global beverage market in 2023 and the only alcoholic drinks category to see significant volume and value growth last year.

The Negroni was also one of the most popular cocktails of 2023, with on-premise sales growing 44% last year . A basic Negroni is typically made with equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. It’s served over ice and garnished with an orange peel.

The Negroni Sbagliato, a version made with prosecco, was the top-trending cocktail in Google searches in the U.S. last year, according to The Spirits Business , likely driven both by the popularity of the original Negroni as well as thanks to a TikTok-sized clip of the stars of HBO’s House of the Dragon discussing it.

Thus, the market appears ripe for any new take on the classic Negroni.

NYCC was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the demand for high-quality cocktails at-home as well as to-go from restaurants and bars, especially in New York City, surged as dining out became unavailable.

Founded by bar industry veterans Linden Pride, Rodrigo Leme and Malte Barnekow, the company touts using ingredients sourced from trusted producers worldwide.

Pride says the pandemic provided the opportunity to tap into a growing consumer desire for high-end cocktails without needing extensive ingredients or bartending skills.

"COVID was an interesting time that really made people appreciate that moment for why they would go to a bar," he tells Forbes . "It wasn't just for a great drink, it wasn't just to see somebody—it was this in-between, this transported moment where you would check out of your day-to-day life."

A Negroni being made at The Carlyle Hotel in New York City.

The company’s flagship offerings include four distinct Negronis: a classic Negroni, a Chocolate Negroni, a rum-based Espresso Negroni and a Mezcalito Negroni. By having four variations of the Negronis, Pride says, consumers can take a deep dive into cocktails and better understand what goes into them.

“People started to recreate that in their houses, and we wanted to fill that gap. There was this appreciation or expectation that you could have a great cocktail at home and you didn't need to buy three or four bottles and watch a YouTube video about how to make it,” says Pride, who along with his wife Nathalie Hudson also owns Dante , one of the premier Negroni bars in Manhattan. “You wanted to just be able to trust and pour something out of the fridge and focus on that moment with a friend or with a piece of music.”

Ingredients play a crucial role in each cocktail’s flavor profile, with NYCC using prestigious products like Mancino Vermouth and Su Casa Mezcal. These choices, according to Pride, are the result of years of experience working with these products in bars.

"In crafting a great cocktail, especially a Negroni, you have to be able to work with Italian vermouth and local American gin and products that you know you can trust," says Pride. “An important part of the choice of ingredients comes from years of experience working with these products behind the bar. We’ve gotten to know how they play in cocktails over the years and perfected their use as components in a mixed drink, which is very much an art form.”

The design of the bottles is also a key aspect of NYCC’s approach, aimed at blending style with functionality. And Hudson led the design process. The bottles are designed to be both practical and aesthetically pleasing, contributing to the overall drinking experience.

"Nathalie’s goal in designing the bottle was to have this piece that could fit easily into a casual ‘let's get together and meet at my stoop to have a Negroni’ kind of moment," Pride describes. “The bottle could sit on the bar as a decanter almost, and you could have this great piece that could sit on the wall. And by designing a decanter that was both classic in design and also contemporary with a beautiful tarp and something that really fits in your palm, we wanted to make sure, and Natalie wanted to make sure that the design of this bottle was egalitarian but also really quite premium.”

Looking ahead, NYCC plans to expand its reach by partnering with high-end hotels and retail experiences. The company has already secured placement at The Carlyle Hotel and the Montauk Yacht Club, with a pop-up planned at Nordstrom.

"It’s is not about just standing out in the market or being a trend that the people like this summer or in the fall; we're about creating a quality experience that consumers can really tap into and fold into their daily lives—in the same way that you'd love to go to your favorite bar and see your favorite bartender and they know the drink you like,” Pride says. “It could be on the fire escape over at a friend's house or in the park. Essentially our focus is bringing people together and creating that occasion that doesn't need to be in a bar.”

We dined here on a Sunday evening while on vacation with family. The view was by far the best part of our experience. We dined ... outside, however on a trip to the restroom inside, we found the dining room and restroom to be in a dilapidated state. The menuwas small, drink selection small, and most importantly, the food was very disappointing and portions small. We were expectingfine dining, however we were met with flavorless risotto, a hair on the scallops, and watered down cocktails. The service wasadequate, but not spectacular (we understand it is hard to find help in the current climate...). Do not recommend thisrestaurant. Read more
