The oyster 1225, the oyster 1225 combined the pinnacle of luxury with exceptional sailing capabilities of a large, 120 foot sailing yacht..
With her generous stowage and large tankage she was perfectly provisioned for extended ocean passages and global adventures in complete luxury and comfort. She offered the ultimate sailing experience for guests, featuring state-of-the-art 4 spreader fractional carbon spar configured for a fully battened, in-boom furling mainsail and a roller furling headsail. She was constructed to meet stringent DNV-GL build and safety standards, and was also compliant with the MCA LY3 yacht code.
This large, 120 foot sailing boat was designed for entertaining in style, with wide, flush fore and aft decks provided perfect spaces for guests to entertain and enjoy. The sunken tender well doubled as a chillout lounge and outdoor cinema. The enclosed cockpit, protected by a hard top bimini, made a beautiful space for al fresco entertaining. Below, the split-level saloon accommodated up to 12 guests in style. The generous stowage space provided plenty of room for watersports and adventure equipment. In addition, she featured a large superyacht style swim platform as standard.
The exceptional volume of the 1225 meant the interior layout was versatile and highly-customisable to suit one’s personal tastes. The focus was on luxury and comfort, with beautiful hand-crafted furniture, solid wood throughout and meticulous attention to detail. Up to 12 guests could be accommodated in the generous and luxurious ensuite owner and guest cabins – all aft guest cabins featured the signature seascape windows, flooding cabins with light. Forward are dedicated crew cabins and a mess for up to six crew with separate access, which afforded guests complete privacy. The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17 m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970 and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At that time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fibreglass. Sixteen were built, in both yawl and sloop versions.

“The new Swan 120 Superyacht encompasses Nautor´s philosophy and DNA on its largest expression. Her sailing performance is exhilarating, thanks to the modern canoe body of the hull and the sail plan matched by an efficient twin rudder lateral plan which includes various keel options. A pioneering clean and efficient push button control deck arrangement offering ample access to the sea and sun bathing is another of the key ingredients. All in all the 120 is a very attractive proposition, created by a team of experts, and built according to Nautor’s best practice.”

A clean foredeck leads aft to the coach roof of the raised saloon, which blends seamlessly into an expansive, protected cockpit area. This core element of the experience afloat is completely free of lines, enabling those not engaged in the sailing of this sublime superyacht to truly relax while underway. The detailed design conceals a sophisticated, electrically controlled bimini top and sprayhood, which disappear into a completely flush coach roof cassette when not in use, and offers extensive shelter from sea and sun.
At anchor, the cockpit area transforms into an encompassing lounge space. With versatile deck sofas, it is the perfect place to unwind as the sun sets before converting into an elegant, intimate dining area. Following the philosophy of other designs in the Maxi Swanline, the Swan 120 also offers ‘aisle seats’ to enhance both the sailing and leisure experience.
Aft of the deck lounge is a clean deck space, still sheltered by the coamings, which runs to behind the steering pedestals with ‘aero-seating’. In-between the helming stations, it is possible to incorporate a ‘snug-island’, which provides protected access to the aft accommodation with a dodger, sprayhood and cozy seating for those on watch.
The voluminous stern section will gain real attention when the yacht is at rest. The transom folds down hydraulically to form a teak-decked swim platform and reveala a spacious garage, housing a tender of 4.5 metres and other toys of choice. Once the tender is launched, the large area becomes available for watersports, sunbathing and even dining. The design means the clean Swan stern under sail effortlessly transforms into a large ‘beach-deck’, connected to a well-organised ‘hangar’ for maximum entertainment at anchor. In addition to the stern platform swinging down, a section of the aft-deck may be opened up to convert into a large sunbed at deck level.
The hull and deck of the Swan 120 will be a full carbon fibre construction, using epoxy SPRINT® pre-preg carbon fibre interior and exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam. The pre-preg system provides the best in structural stiffness and rigidity at the lightest possible weight, while at the same time ensuring absolute structural integrity. The hull will be laid up in a female mould tooled from the same technology, thereby ensuring identical mechanical properties when the hull undergoes heat curing using the very latest in oven technology.

At the heart of the yacht, and flooded with natural light from the coach roof above, is a spacious saloon, featuring a lounge area to port and a dining suite to starboard. There is a unique saloon layout option that features a large hull window adjacent to daybeds.

This soft-furnished space is perfect while under sail or just before the night falls. The proximity to the hull and water offers an experience of the sea in true alignment with Misa’s core philosophy for the interior. It has been commented that these saloon beds are reminiscent of the ‘pilot berths’ typically found in Swan yachts from the 1970s.

HUGE $1,000,000 PRICE REDUCTION
This North Coast 120’ is a spectacular yacht with an extensive refit that occurred in 2021-2022, taking over 12 months and close to $2M which has been invested in her. She underwent a complete paint job, top to bottom, with 2 coats of Awlgrip Total Prime 545 and 3 topcoats of Awlcraft 2000 Snow White at the prestigious Roscioli Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
While out of the water, all underwater components - thru-hull fittings, underwater gear stabilizers, bow thrusters, etc. - were serviced and maintained. Additionally, prior to paint, all deck fittings, cleats and winches were removed, serviced and replaced after paint. Extensive work was also performed on the custom hydraulic swim platform, fire system and other major systems which were updated or serviced. A complete W6 was performed down to crank and bearings and a complete engine rebuild down to zero time by Marine Power in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The engine room also went through a major clean up, refit and all systems were gone through and operation checked and/or serviced.

Galley & Laundry Equipment
Located on the main deck forward, the galley opens into a country style kitchen arrangement with a U-shaped settee with a split table providing ease of movement around the dining area. The large country kitchen is finished with chestnut ash cabinetry and taupe pebbled color Avonite countertops. Three leather bar stools beautifully complement the countertops. A tremendous view is afforded both port and starboard. Forward of the split dinette is a 46” Samsung HDTV with Boston DS360 speakers with volume control and a B & K subwoofer. There is a stairwell to starboard leading to the VIP suite just forward of this area below deck. A Uline icemaker and 24 bottle wine chiller with dual temperature control compliment the galley bar area as well.

Deck Equipment
The large foredeck can be accessed from either port or starboard. Starboard side there is a bosun’s locker with organized storage for deck equipment. There is a large sun pad with cushions for lounging. In Spring of 2022, the bow deck and aft platform were totally refinished in matching nonskid. The aft deck has built in seating facing forward and 2 separate tables and chairs with teak deck and direct (secondary) access through a port door and ladder down to engine room. A stainless and teak staircase starboard leads to the flybridge and double sliding glass doors lead into the salon. There are overhead lights and speakers with volume controls. Aft and down, either port or starboard, are euro style molded stairs to the massive swim platform with stainless steel removable rails, storage cabinets and an elaborate Murray & Associates designed custom hydraulically operated swim platform sea stair built by Platypus Marine that submerges at transom for scuba and watercraft activity. This is totally concealed (folds up under enlarged rear deck) within the conventional swim platform when not in use. There are 6 underwater lights installed at the transom and a shower is conveniently located to rinse off after your swim or relaxing time in the sun.

 We motored away from the dock in Newport on a calm pretty morning. The GPS agreed with the speedometer — flat out we were doing a respectable 8.6 knots on this 40-footer powered by a 38-horsepower Yanmar driving a Martec two-blade folding propeller. Optimal cruising speed would be a little less. Under Sail We headed for a light breeze and hoisted the long-battened mainsail on Harken slide cars with ease. The boat was responsive and maneuverable under main alone and came alive when we unfurled the jib. This J/120 was equipped with an optional carbon mast by Hall Spars. The reduced weight aloft made possible by a carbon spar increases the range of positive stability as well as performance overall. The mast is stepped through the deck for extra stiffness in the rig and better control of sail shape. Off the wind, the boat sailed very well under the asymmetrical spinnaker. Once essential line attachments were made on the foredeck and the spinnaker pulled out of the forward hatch, all spinnaker operations, including using the snuffer, were possible from the cockpit. In light air the 120 moves fast enough to bring the apparent breeze well forward and thus, even with this sail tacked out on the extended seven-foot sprit, one needs to think like a catamaran sailor and tack downwind. The boat we sailed had the standard seven-foot lead keel; a 5’9″ shoal-draft keel is offered optionally. Both keels are narrow fins with an elephant-foot style bulb on the bottom for good stability and lift. The Cockpit The cockpit is very comfortable with well positioned foot bracing for the crew when the boat is heeled. The double-ended mainsheet has Harken 44 self-tailing winches on each side of the cockpit reached easily by either the helmsman or the crew — as is the traveler. All halyards and reef lines lead aft on the cabin house and all winch handles clear the dodger comfortably. The 48-inch-diameter lightweight Edson aluminum wheel permits the helmsman to get well outboard on either side for maximum visibility. The helmsman seating is comfortable both when level or heeled. All of this provides a good balance between shorthanded and crewed sailing. The Interior Below, the ladder had a generous 60-degree slope and side rails kept one’s feet from sliding off when heeled. The interior was light and airy with double staterooms fore and aft. No Dorades were provided; however, the cabin ports opened. Both double berths were a little on the small side and the inboard end of the J sprit did occupy a portion of the forward stateroom; however, given the interiors of most 40-foot race boats, this cruiser/racer had very nice accommodations. The two main cabin settees were long and straight, and could easily function as sea berths with lee cloths in place. While the galley is compact, it is very adequate and the six-cubic-foot icebox is bigger than on many boats. An Origo non-pressurized alcohol stove with oven is standard. The stove gimballed well and was equipped with a protection bar. Construction The hull and deck are fiberglass with balsa core and the boat is built to ABS-approved plans. The boat is laminated using the resin-infusion process, which gives superior quality over conventional production layup techniques. The hull-to-deck flange joint is extra wide at 4.5 inches, and it is glued using a urethane elastomer adhesive. While strength is gained wherever rail hardware is bolted through and where bulkheads are attached, the glue does most of the job. The lack of mechanical purchase in this hull-to-deck joint may make some nervous, but for reassurance one only need consider that most of the boat — in fact most of any FRP boat — is held together by various types of resin and glue in the first place. The new series of “J sprit” boats represents an excellent balance between cruising boats you can race and racing boats you can cruise coastally. Certainly, the boat can be made even faster by removing the lazy jacks, replacing the jib furler with a foil and adding a conventional spinnaker for square running. But that’s not the point. The point is to create a shorthanded cruising boat that can perform, and J/Boats has done a superb job. — Bill Lee To cruising sailors who seek out new models at boat shows, the J/120 is something of a quiet dove among pouter pigeons — built more for flying than roosting. There are no button-tufted armchairs, vanities or mood lighting. There are powerful and easily managed sails, a responsive helm, a light but well-built hull and efficient maintainability throughout. At the dock, the lack of frills gives the boat a Spartan or simplistic appearance, but a sailor’s appreciation builds immediately when under way. Almost invisible details make the boat a pleasure to be aboard. The cockpit is configured for convenience of steering and sail handling. The big wheel and semi-balanced rudder create a fingertip helm, and when I nudged it less than a half turn to leeward while we churned upwind, the boat fell off instantly without any need of easing the large-roached mainsail. An additional benefit of the light helm is that it puts a small load on an autopilot; the blade is powerful, balance point spot on. Form and function take precedence over styling statements on Rod Johnstone’s designs. Moving around the boat is easy and there are handholds and foot braces just about everywhere they are needed. The winch placements are logical and the wide side decks have good non-skid. The deep cockpit locker has a gasketed lid and is also accessible through a door aft of the galley, which allows you to avoid the sometimes painful contortions involved with getting a sail or inflatable dinghy out of the nether regions. There is no awkwardness in getting below. The companionway ladder is sturdy and safe to use even when the boat is heeled and bounding over waves. The J/120, as delivered, lacks a quilted homeyness found on many 40-foot cruisers.It does not lend itself immediately to long-term live-aboards, but there is certainly enough space and stowage for two couples to cruise for a fortnight or more. A few accommodation innovations are worth a closer look. Bedding on this boat can be stowed inside throw-pillow covers — solving the problem of what to do with bedding during the day and piles of pillows at night. Also dual-purpose seat back cushions on the settees serve as cockpit cushions. This solves the bulky stowage problem of deck cushions, but introduces some new concerns about lack of waterproofness and whether bringing damp, salty cushions below creates more of a problem than it actually resolves. One of the few space conflicts on the J/120 is created by the asymmetrical chute in its snuffer, which can remain hooked up to its sheets and halyard and be stowed conveniently inside the forward hatch. This puts it on the forward bunk. The crew must decide whether sail stowage or human comfort wins out in the forward cabin. The value of the J/120 comes from building costs that have gone into substantive structures and quality gear. The base price of $162,600 is certainly attractive, but typical buyers opt for a variety of extras that boost this figure up to anywhere from $220,000 to $230,000. The boat that we sail tested cost about $247,000, which included the carbon fiber rig, radar on a removable pole, full sailing instruments, and autopilot, among other things. It is worth noting that the following items are also on the option list: hot and cold pressure water, 110-volt shore power, refrigeration, propane stove and oven, opening ports in cabin trunk, molded anchor well and removable bow roller. Certainly, the advantage of this is that a buyer does not pay for items not needed. Overall, I agree with Bill Lee’s comments about this boat.  There is no shortage of automotive-inspired yachts on the market—take the Tecnomar Lamborghini 63 , the Candela C-8 Polestar , and the Brabus Shadow 900 for starters—but that hasn’t stopped Tribale Yachts from diving into vehicular designs. The first model, which is already under construction at Tribale’s yard in Pisa, Italy, spans 120 feet from pointed bow to sculpted stern. Penned by designer Michele Dragoni, the 120 Gran Turismo will be topped with an aluminum superstructure to ensure it is light on the water and quick to build. The vessel will also feature a raised pilothouse that provides “optimal visibility and control at high speeds,” according to Tribale.  The 120 Gran Turismo can soar across the seas like a GT, too. The yacht can be powered by twin MAN V-12 engines capable of churning out 2,000 hp or two Cat C32 engines with 1,790 kW of grunt. Every detail has been designed to enhance speed, handling, and efficiency, according to the yard. The yacht offers way more space than the average GT, though. The sprawling interior can be outfitted with five or six generous cabins for 10 or 12 guests and three cabins for six crew. The scenic owner’s suite occupies a prime position on the main deck, while the guest cabins are spread across the lower deck and the crew quarters are positioned in the bow. Every space has been meticulously crafted with the finest materials and attention to detail, Tribale says. Other highlights include a plush sundeck and a sizable swim platform. Tribale’s lineup currently comprises four catamaran models, three crossovers, and two explorers. Work on the flagship, Tribale 165 Explorer is due to commence later this year.
