Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Bowman 40

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 16.8 suggests that the Bowman 40 will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. In the absence of any published Ballast/Displacement for the Bowman 40  we are unable to make any assessment of this element of her stiffness under sail, but this review by Yachting Monthly says "she’s stiff and easily capable of standing up to her canvas" .

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 259, tells us the Bowman 40 is a moderate displacement cruiser, which means she'll carry all your cruising gear without it having a dramatic effect on her performance. Most of today's sailboats intended for offshore cruising fall into this displacement category.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 29.3 suggests that crew comfort of a Bowman 40 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate bluewater cruising boat - a predictable and acceptable motion for most seasoned sailors.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.9 indicates that a Bowman 40 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Bowman 40: A Comfortable Ocean Cruiser

The Bowman 40, a medium-to-heavy displacement yacht has a classic design and a proven track record of blue water cruising.

Overview The Bowman 40 was designed by Chuck Paine and built by Southern Boat Building in the UK starting in 1987. It is a development of the earlier Bowman 40 designed by Jack Laurent Giles and built by Emsworth Marine in the UK starting in 1974. The Paine version has a more modern hull shape, a longer waterline, a taller rig and a deeper keel than the Giles version. Both versions share the same cutter rig, long keel and skeg-hung rudder.

The Bowman 40 is a well-built and well-equipped yacht that can handle any weather and sea conditions. It has a deep-bilged hull with an overhanging bow and narrowish shoulders, which gives it a powerful but sea-kindly motion. It has a stiff and balanced sail plan that can be easily reefed and trimmed. It has a spacious and comfortable cockpit that can be enclosed with a sprayhood and bimini. It has a solid teak interior with ample storage and ventilation.

The Bowman 40 is not a racer, but neither is it a slouch. It can maintain good average speeds on long passages, thanks to its momentum and ability to carve through heavy seas. It is also capable of sailing close to the wind, thanks to its long keel and skeg. It has a shoal draught of 1.68 m (5.51 ft), which allows it to explore shallow waters and dry out alongside a wall on its keel base.

The Bowman 40 is ideal for couples or small families who want to sail around the world in comfort and safety. It can accommodate up to six people in two cabins and the saloon, but it is more suited for four people who value space and privacy. It has a large galley, a generous saloon table, a roomy heads compartment, a wet locker and a full-depth cockpit locker.

Accommodation The Bowman 40 has a traditional layout with two cabins: one forward and one aft. The forward cabin has a V-berth with an infill cushion to make it into a double berth. There are lockers above and below the berth, as well as shelves along the hull sides. There is an opening hatch above the berth for light and ventilation.

The aft cabin has a double berth that spans across the stern. There are lockers above and below the berth, as well as shelves along the hull sides. There is an opening portlight above the berth for light and ventilation.

The saloon has two settees that can be used as single berths. The starboard settee can be pulled out to make it into a wider berth. There are lockers above and behind the settees, as well as shelves along the hull sides. There is a large drop-leaf table in the center of the saloon, which can seat six people comfortably. There are four opening portlights and two opening hatches in the saloon for light and ventilation. The galley is located on the port side of the companionway. It has a U-shaped layout with ample counter space and storage. It has a three-burner stove with oven, a double sink with hot and cold water, a top-loading fridge with freezer compartment, and several drawers and lockers for utensils and provisions.

The navigation station is located on the starboard side of the companionway. It has a large chart table with storage underneath, an instrument panel with VHF radio, GPS, radar, autopilot, wind speed/direction indicator, depth sounder, log/speedometer, compass and battery monitor. There is also a swivel seat with storage underneath. The heads compartment is located on the port side between the saloon and the forward cabin. It has a manual marine toilet, a washbasin with hot and cold water, a shower with curtain, a mirror, a cabinet and several hooks for towels and clothes. There is an opening portlight for light and ventilation.

Hull and Deck The Bowman 40 has a hand-laid fiberglass hull with a balsa core above the waterline and a solid laminate below. The hull is reinforced with stringers and bulkheads, and has a white gelcoat finish. The deck is also hand-laid fiberglass with a balsa core, and has a molded-in nonskid pattern. The deck is bonded and bolted to the hull with an aluminum toe rail.

The Bowman 40 has a flush deck with a raised coachroof that provides good headroom below. The coachroof has four opening hatches and two dorade vents for light and ventilation. The foredeck has a large anchor locker with an electric windlass, a bow roller, a bow sprit and a chain stopper. There are also two mooring cleats, two fairleads and a stainless steel pulpit.

The side decks are wide and uncluttered, with teak handrails on the coachroof and stainless steel stanchions and lifelines along the edges. There are also four mooring cleats, four fairleads, two genoa tracks, two genoa winches, two staysail tracks, two staysail winches, two dorade vents and two fuel fillers on the side decks.

The cockpit is spacious and comfortable, with teak seats and sole. It has a pedestal-mounted wheel steering with a binnacle compass, engine controls and instrument pod. There is also a folding cockpit table, a cockpit locker, a gas locker, a stern locker, a stern rail with seats, a boarding ladder, an outboard bracket, a flag staff and a stainless steel pushpit.

Mast and Rigging The Bowman 40 has a cutter rig with a single-spreader aluminum mast and boom. The mast is keel-stepped and has internal halyards and wiring. The boom has an internal outhaul and reefing lines. The rigging is stainless steel wire with swaged terminals and turnbuckles. The sail area is 86.4 m 2 (930 ft 2 ).

The Bowman 40 has a roller-furling genoa, a roller-furling staysail and a slab-reefing mainsail. The sails are made of Dacron and have UV protection strips. The genoa has foam luff padding and telltales. The staysail has hanks and telltales. The mainsail has three reef points, battens, leech line and telltales.

The Bowman 40 has four self-tailing winches: two Lewmar 48 for the genoa sheets, and two Lewmar 30 for the staysail sheets. There are also four winches on the mast: two Lewmar 30 for the halyards, one Lewmar 16 for the reefing lines, and one Lewmar 8 for the topping lift. There are also several rope clutches, blocks, cleats and jammers for the running rigging.

Keel and Rudder The Bowman 40 has a long keel with an external lead ballast. The keel is bolted to the hull with stainless steel bolts. The keel provides good directional stability and protects the propeller and rudder from grounding damage. The keel draft is 1.68 m (5.51 ft).

The Bowman 40 has a skeg-hung rudder with a stainless steel stock and bronze fittings. The rudder is connected to the wheel steering by cables and pulleys. The rudder provides good maneuverability and balance.

Conclusion The Bowman 40 is a classic ocean cruiser that offers comfort, safety and performance. It is well-built and well-equipped for long-distance sailing. It has a spacious and cozy interior with ample storage and ventilation. It has a powerful but sea-kindly hull with a long keel and skeg-hung rudder. It has a cutter rig with roller-furling sails that can be easily handled by a small crew.

Review of Bowman 40 (Paine)

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 454.0 liter fresh water capacity.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.50 - 1.60 meter (4.92 - 5.22 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Bowman 40 (Paine) is typically equipped with an inboard Perkins Prima M50 diesel engine at 50 hp (37 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.8 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 265.0 liters (70 US gallons, 58 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bowman 40 (Paine) is 1.88, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bowman 40 (Paine) is about 250 kg/cm, alternatively 1401 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 250 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1401 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Bowman 40 (old style)

  • July 9, 2009

Supremely elegant and epitomising serious offshore cruising yachts of the 1960s and early 1970s, which has since come to be widely regarded as something of a golden age for British boatbuilders, this Laurent Giles design is still a popular choice among blue-water cruisers after nearly 40 years afl oat. Under sail, her handling and performance are good, and the long keel is quite shallow, so she can creep into creeks that other large ocean cruisers cannot reach. She has seven or eight berths in three cabins, and although narrowbeamed, she manages to have a spacious feel under her high deckhead. She has a reasonable galley and good chart table. For a long-distance cruiser, her fuel and water tanks are on the small side.

Bluewater Sailboat – Bowman 40

Chuck Paine created the Bluewater Sailboat Bowman 40, an aft-cockpit cutter, which Southern Boat Building Ltd. produced in the UK.

The Bowman 40 was primarily built to take experienced sailors offshore in any kind of weather or sea state. In order to make her more hospitable to a crowd of guests, very few sacrifices in seaworthiness have been made, but this seems right to me. Look at the modern Scandinavian blue water cruising boats to see proof of this; most of them resemble this vessel.

With a Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 16.8, the Bowman 40 should be able to easily reach her maximum hull speed and meet the expectations of the majority of cruise sailors for sailing performance. It is impossible to evaluate the Bowman 40’s stiffness under sail because of the lack of published ballast/displacement data, but according to Yachting Monthly, “she’s rigid and easily capable of standing up to her canvas.”

The Bowman 40 is a modest displacement cruiser, according to her Displacement/Length Ratio of 259. This indicates that she can carry all of your cruising gear without it significantly affecting her performance. These displacement sailboats make up the majority of the sailboats used today for offshore sailing.

According to Ted Brewer’s Comfort Ratio of 29.3, the crew comfort of a Bowman 40 in a seaway is comparable to that of a moderate bluewater cruiser, which is a predictable and agreeable motion for the majority of seasoned sailors. A Bowman 40 would be a safer choice of Bluewater sailboat for an ocean journey than one with a CSF of greater than 2.0, according to the Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.9.

Now you can also precisely calculate the expenses related to boat ownership to make smart choices based on your budget and sailing needs. Use this bluewater Sailboat Calculator to explore different options and make the best decision.

The Bowman may seem a little crowded to those who are used to spacious saloons and enormous double cabins, but in my opinion and in the opinion of many long-distance blue water cruising yachtsmen, too much space can be unwelcome while underway.

However, she lacks capacity for a family and her cockpit isn’t exactly made for easy Mediterranean lounging. Her light draught is a benefit upriver and at anchor, and she will dry out easily alongside a wall on her long keel base. There is no platform for taking a shower after swimming, and you need a ladder to climb up her transom.

She readily competes with a more contemporary design in terms of entertainment value. You can easily prepare dinner with her huge, fully equipped galley and large saloon table for six.

Sleeping is confined to the saloon and two cabins, but in exchange for the lack of a second aft berth, you have a significantly larger head, a usable wet locker, and a full-depth cockpit locker—all of which are far more crucial for blue sea sailing, unless you’re bringing a big family along.

Performance

The medium-to-heavy displacement Bowman 40 is a yacht built to easily navigate vast waters. She has a deep bilge, an overhanging bow, thin shoulders, and a sea-friendly performance-style motion through the water.

Because of this simple motion, living at sea throughout a long journey is not only feasible but also absolutely pleasurable. On many boats, being tossed around down below for days on end might make you absolutely tired, but that’s not the case with the Bowman. Both below and above decks, there are always handholds within reach, and there aren’t many sharp edges to cut yourself on.

The general harmony of the hull and sail plan is equally significant. She is stiff and easily capable of standing up to her canvas because to her large ballast, the weight of the engine over the keel, and the water tanks on either side. Because of her longish keel and skeg, she tracks well and has light, positive steering. The cutter rig keeps the sails compact and allows her more maneuverability in a gale, and the high caliber deck fitting and fittings give you the assurance that she won’t break apart in stormy conditions.

She is not a racer, but neither is she a slacker. Thanks to her momentum and ability to navigate strong seas, she frequently reaches distant locations at the same time as a much lighter performance boat, but with a much more laid-back crew.

Quick Notes

For a couple who wishes to sail anywhere, at any time, and still feel safe, she is ideal. As long as they don’t plan to stay indefinitely, there is space for a visiting couple as well as the kids. The countless lockers and clever use of every available space for convenient storage, which is just what a cruising yacht needs.

You really can’t go wrong with a Bowman 40 for sailing, and because she is so beautifully built and furnished, her value will remain high in today’s used boat market.

Bowman 40 (Laurent Giles)

Bowman 40 (Laurent Giles) is a 39 ′ 11 ″ / 12.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Jack Laurent Giles and built by Emsworth Marine (UK) starting in 1974.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

cruiser, the boat volume is small, but everything works well for ocean crossings. It well, even with a draught of 1.5m, the rig is incredibly strong with twin forestays, baby stay, ruining back stays, backstay etc etc. The sort of wraps itself around you, there is always handholds where you need them. The is very strong. The great thing is, for a 12.5 ton boat, it sits on 6 -7 knots easily in 10-12knots of . We're really impressed by the build quality.

I know we still have the 'rose glasses' on, I'd love to hear from other owners about any problems or shortcomings with the boat.

Boat: a sailing boat
and owner's lack of experience.

If you got one without issues induced by her ex-owner then you have a well sailing boat that should keep her value well.

I believe you can get nearly all and any tech info on this boat as Bowman seem to be still in the business.

Cheers,
b.

form used by the Morris 40 was very similar to the Bowman 40 (but had a different lay-up schedule using Reicholds Hydrex vinylester resin and Quadaxial E-glass cloth, with ISO N.P.G. gelcoat), but there were changes to the of the boat in the forward and aft , as well as the forward and aft cabins. The and essentially carried over intact.

There were considerable differences in specifications of the two , becoming even less similar as Morris gained experience with this boat and placed their imprint on it.

Morris made numerous improvements to the boat and upgraded most aspects of it over its production life. Base was $273,600 when introduced in 1993.

found some slight , mainly in the . The bottom had been Gelshielded back in 2000. I plan to take off all the old anti foul and put another layer of Gelshield down. Some servicing of the seacocks is needed, some needs replacing. But the fundamentals of the boat seem very solid. Its been very well built.

Its interesting to know that its the same boat as the Morris, I'll hunt out more information about that boat.

Thanks for the info,

Stevw

an unfamiliar boat on the other side of the world. Some thought us crazy for travelling all the way to (and spending around AUD$6000 to do so) was madness! We were lucky that we had a friend over here (THanks Dave Stanley!) who could run an eye over the boat. We've been very pleased with what we found.

We had an excellent in Fergus Prescott, just went beyond the normal in inspecting the boat, helping with the . He even serviced some of the Blake's for us so that she was to take back to Fethiye. The yards seem good (we took the boat down to Gocek to haul) with some care needed in selecting the right tradesmen.

We have to go back to Oz now to finish up careers and house, but we're back in August to start. The marina (ECE Marina) has offered us quite good rates (2600 Euro) for a 6 month stay, so we'll spend our first in Fethiye. Then we've signed up for the EMYR rally, it will take us to Syria, Lebanon, , and . I'm not a fan of rallies, but this one will take care of all the paper (and provide a coast guard escort!) into those countries. Will help us to learn the ropes.

Huzzah!!!

, primarily on the and prop shaft housing. I plan to cut back to the Gelshield and put on another barrier, Primocon and then soft anti foul.

Anything you think would be useful to inspect while she's hauled? There are a few seacocks that I will either (Blakes) or replace (a couple of gate valves), add a and a few other small jobs.

Can I contact you via rather than online?

The boat used to be called 'Rhiannon of Birdham', and now is called 'Pavlov'.
