It’s the 332-foot Attessa IV, belonging to industrialist billionaire Dennis Washington .

He’s the Montana-based founder of the Washington Companies and a long-time San Diego visitor. His $150 million yacht, described as “one of the most exquisite” by Forbes.com, has been a frequent sight at the Kona Kai Marina on Shelter Island.

On June 4, however, the yacht was all decked out for a party. Washington’s invitees celebrated the 90th birthday of Bill McComas , a part-time resident of Rancho Santa Fe. McComas is one of the founders of IGT ( International Gaming Technologies), a firm dominating the poker video gaming machine market.

In the interest of trivial pursuit, Washington’s predecessor Attessa yacht, although it bore a different name, was used the 1987 film “Overboard” starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell . That Attessa also appeared in the 1993 movie “Indecent Proposal” with Robert Redford and Demi Moore.

Helping hand: Sharon LeeMaster , the voice for numerous local not-for-profit organizations, fell and broke her wrist the other evening. Despite her pain, she kept an appointment the following morning to deliver donated Padres ballgame tickets to the San Diego Madres for its fundraiser.

While there, a kindly member of the Madres volunteered to help her while she is on the mend. “Could I come by and read to you, or do whatever you need?” queried Dorothy Yonimitsu .

The age of the lady so generously offering her services? 98.

Busy as a bell: The local Spirit of Liberty Foundation’s America’s Freedom Bell traveled to the World War II monument in Washington, D.C., for Memorial Day. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter rang the huge bronze bell, which resembles the Liberty Bell, as did thousands of other attendees.

After the ceremony, the bell rode on a float in the Memorial Day parade then was bundled up and flown to France for the international observance of D-Day in Normandy on June 5 and 6.

The bell was originally cast on June 6, 2013. It bears the symbols of all the branches of the Armed Forces and contains metal from the Twin Towers destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Good sports: Soccer player Kraig Chiles was honored as San Diego’s 2016 “Sports Man of the Year” at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Stealing some of the San Diego Sockers star’s spotlight, however, was his “date” at the Taste 4 Sports event — Chiles’ 2-year-old daughter.

Perennial attendee Bill Walton was unable to be at the celebration this year but his presence was felt nonetheless — a dinner with the hoops star was auctioned for more than $400.

Billionaire's mega-yacht Attessa IV docks in Charleston

who owns mega yacht attessa

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A new mega-yacht has taken up a notable spot at the Charleston Marina. The Attessa IV, a 337-foot mega-yacht owned by Dennis Washington, docked on Thursday and has picked up quite a bit of attention from people driving by.

The yacht was actually built in 1998 and named the Evergreen by a Japanese businessman, but it was purchased in 2007 and renamed the Attessa IV by Washington, a Montana construction mogul with a love of rebuilding yachts. The redesign included lengthening the stern and bow of the ship.

Washington told Forbes he spent more than three years rebuilding and redesigning the yacht to his liking. Now it includes a fifth-floor sky lounge and bar, a grand staircase flanked by Henry Moore sculptures, a lit pool and deck that includes a spa, and a completely redone engine room. Four rooms were transformed into a gym, a spa, and a massage room.

The yacht even has its own helicopter and landing pad. A deck or two below, Washington and his wife can lounge in custom Gucci chairs on a private deck.

Looking from above, the decks are curved instead of flat like many other yachts, Washington told Forbes. He told the magazine he thought it would be the new standard.

Washington owns or co-owns a controlling interest in the Washington Companies and Canada's Seaspan Marine Corporation. Forbes lists him as the 79th richest man in the world with a net worth of nearly $6 billion.

Washington is a self-made billionaire. As a child, he says he shined shoes for pocket money and lived in government housing. Some 50 years ago he quit a job working for his uncle to start his own construction business, he told Forbes.

The Launch of Yacht Attessa IV – The Biggest in North American History:

As motor yacht ATTESSA IV nears completion she is to be launched in Canada by Washington Yachting Group (WYG) on the 5th of December 2010, or soon after, and officially unveiled in Vancouver.  When launched, the Attessa IV yacht will move into the world’s top 25 private superyachts by length, measuring 330 ft (or around 100.6 metres). She is now the largest superyacht to be (re) launched in North America, (*see below) being larger than Cakewalk. A very impressive ship, Attessa IV is also the 23rd longest private yacht in the world.

The refit and reconstruction of superyacht Attessa IV , now a sleek and elegant new yacht, is one of the most impressive refits and launches ever in the world and is a very proud moment for Canada and for all of those involved, including the team at WYG, the shipyard, the yacht designer Glade Johnson Design and team, the captain, and the yacht’s owner.

The refurbishment and rebuild has been a very large project and it has taken over 3 1/2 years to complete. There has been an extensive reconstruction and rebuilding involved, from the bottom up – a reconstruction of both her interior and exterior design, style and functionality. Essentially, the yacht is now is a new yacht, and in ‘as new’ condition. She is the first superyacht in the world to benefit from AkzoNobel core technology, an innovative new approach to applying a metallic finish.

The interior renovations has been comprehensive and is believed to have included the creation of a spa on the lower deck, as well as a new top deck which showcases a large Spa Pool pool and a wonderful hanging glass sculpture by artist Dale Chihuly. The superyacht Attessa IV also has a helipad on the her upper aft deck and forepeak (see the rendering yacht design above). The massive 5 level yacht displays curvaceous exterior lines, a deep blue hull, and an impressive exterior deck space for entertaining.

The original motor yacht was built at Hayashikane Zosen Kk in 1999 and called Evergreen and she was then purchased by the new owner back in 2007. Now, after a complete rebuild, the ATTESSA IV yacht is to be re launched in 2010 as an almost completely new motor yacht and measuring almost 30 feet longer.  She is scheduled to be launched in Vancouver around the date the 5th of December 2010 and has experienced some delays due to the scale of the undertaking and recent ice and snow.

Superyacht Attessa IV - The After Rendering

History of Yacht Attessa IV:

This luxury yacht was originally launched in 1999 as Evergreen, built for the chairman of the Taiwan-based Evergreen Corporation, at the company’s shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan. The exterior styling of Evergreen was designed by Diana Yacht Design with interior styling by Felix Buytendijk.

Purchased and renamed in 2007 by an American businessman yacht owner, M/Y Attessa IV entered into a period of rebuild in by Washington Yachting Group.  Glade Johnson Design is the company which was contracted responsible to create the boat’s new interior and exterior styling.

Awlgrip was involved in the refit and Yacht Attessa IV is the first superyacht in the world to benefit from AkzoNobel core technology. This a technology which is new in the Yacht and Aerospace arenas because the harsh sea and sky operating environment. The rebuild involved an innovative new approach to applying a metallic finish to a large areas on the yacht.

One of the major jobs undertaken for the extensive refit was the re-styling of the exterior superstructure. This was achieved by building on numerous sections to the vessel superstructure and then attaching many shaped composite panels. Both panels and extensions have been  faired (moulded and shaped by hand) using around gallons 40,000 litres (10,000 gallons) of Awlfair, an Awlgrip product. The project also incorporated Hullgard paint primers which are specially formulated to allow for over coating with subsequent primers or fillers without the need for labour intensive sanding, thereby reducing workload.

Captain Ted McCumber, of the Washington Yachting Group, is the Project Manager. Launched, superyacht Attessa IV enters a new chapter in her history and is easily capable of cruising the world’s oceans including the Pacific, America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean. She is a private yacht and has no plans, at present, to be available for yacht charters.

CharterWorld will bring you the latest news on the Attessa IV yacht and further images of her exterior and interior if they become public.

The ‘Reborn’ Luxury Yacht Attessa IV Visits Puerto Vallarta

You may have seen mega yacht Attessa IV sailing around Puerto Vallarta in the last few days. Valued at $250 million USD, this World Superyacht Awards 2011 winner is one of a kind 328-foot long vessel equipped with its own helicopter. Not only is it one of the largest luxury motor yachts in the world, but also conceals a peculiar story.

Originally built as Evergreen in 1999 for Taiwanese shipping tycoon Chang Yung-fa − late founder and chairman of the Evergreen Group − , it was a 298-foot vessel designed by Diana Yacht Design. It had a conservative design and among its features, there was a large karaoke bar, 15 cabins for guests and room for 21 crew members. In 2007 it was sold to the current owner Dennis Washington.

Washington is an American industrialist and billionaire who owns the Washington Group Intl. and Seaspan Marine Corporation. With an estimated net worth around $6 billion − making him the 79 th -richest person in the US − , he is well known for his taste for luxury mega yachts, owning up to three of them:  the Feadship Attessa , the St. Eval and the Attessa IV itself.

But Washington is not the typical yacht lover: he likes to rebuild yachts instead of building new custom ones. In this case, the reconstruction for the Attessa IV took a 3.5-year long period where the bow, stern, shape, structure, interior layout and features were all changed. Finally, in 2010, under supervision of Washington Yachting Group and thanks to the talents of designers Glade Johnson and Washington’s own wife Phyllis, as well as naval architect Gregory K. Marshall’s work, the ‘new’ Attessa IV was born.

The reborn luxury mega yacht offers 2,322 square meters of interior and provides deluxe accommodation for 36 guests and a crew of 21 members. The yacht includes many amazing features like a spa on the lower deck and top deck, a large Spa Pool and a hanging glass sculpture by artist Dale Chihuly. The super yacht also boasts a new foredeck tender garage and a striking helipad. Some of the celebrity guests that have been spotted enjoying the yacht is Bill Gates, who went on a family holiday in Belize in 2012.

If you’re curious to see the luxurious interiors of the Attessa IV and want to know more about the story of the yacht told by the protagonists themselves, we recommend you to watch this video:

Two super luxury yachts, Attessa IV and Cloudbreak, have been anchored in Puerto Vallarta since the beginning of the year. Valued at $250 million and $150 million, respectively, these yachts have been a regular sight in the marina for several years. The owner of Attessa IV is the U.S. entrepreneur Dennis Washington, ranked 83rd among the world’s richest by Forbes with a fortune of $6 billion. The yacht offers amenities like a gym, spa, massage room, luxurious cabins for 28 guests, and a helipad.

Attessa IV arrived in Puerto Vallarta a few weeks ago, and while its departure date is uncertain, it typically sets sail at the end of January or early February, as observed in previous years. This award-winning yacht, honored as the best luxury vessel at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards, stands out for its design and the onboard helicopter, allowing passengers to reach remote beaches or land locations.

Attesa yacht in Vallarta waters

Originally named Evergreen, the yacht was built in 1999 for Taiwanese shipping magnate Chang Yung-fa and later purchased by current owner Dennis Washington in 2007. The Cloudbreak, another superyacht in Puerto Vallarta, is a 72.5-meter vessel built in 2016, known for its sophisticated design by luxury yacht architect Espen Øino and interiors by Parisian designer Christian Liaigre. It features high-tech amenities, a helideck, a large fireplace, and claims to have the world’s biggest toy chest.

Cloudbreak is considered a high-volume yacht, resembling a floating high-tech chalet with extensive fitness and spa areas, modern lighting, and sound systems. With 7 cabins that accommodate 12 guests and a crew of 22, the yacht’s name is inspired by the famous Cloudbreak wave in Fiji, capturing the adventurous spirit of its owners, guests, and clients.
