Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

rose gold yachtmaster rolex

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

Rolex Yachtmaster 116655 Full Review

Behold the  new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster with the Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet: Rolex's 1st Rubber Strap

With the new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster, Rolex watchmakers held no punches and put in nearly every great idea they ever had into one amazing watch. The Rolex Yachtmaster has been around since the early '90s and came in an assortment of materials from gold and steel all the way up to platinum. They are known for being shiny and luxurious from one end to the next. So it comes as no surprise that the world was taken by a storm when they decided to use rubber to introduce the new Rolex Yachtmaster watch reference #116655 . Was it a step up or a step down for the series? PrestigeTime.com bloggers believe that pictures speak much louder than words.

The new men's Yachtmaster from Rolex is a 40mm 18k rose gold case watch with a black dial and accented in Rolex's very own Everose gold. Just like their proprietary 18kt rose gold alloy, Rolex will always prefer to create the status quo and not have to rise to meet it because of anyone else.

In the new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster, they held no punches and put in nearly every great idea they ever had into one amazing watch.

At the core lies their in-house Rolex movement, the automatic caliber 3135 which resonates at 28,800 vph containing 31 jewels and has a whopping 50-hour power reserve. Of course, it would not be complete without their "Cyclops" magnifier. The new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster is also known as the m116655-0001.

Rolex is also no stranger to trending luxury watches. They tend to be the first in doing and introducing many things. While rubber has been around for a long time and has been used on many watches over the years, both high-end luxury watches and everything else. Rubber had no place on a Rolex watch until now. Rolex waited this long to introduce this material into their products not because they were hesitant to be part of the trend, on the contrary,

they wanted to revolutionize the rubber watch band before using it on their first-ever rubber strapped watch. Creating the best rubber bracelet was something Rolex obsessed about until its perfection. Enter the new Rolex  Oysterflex bracelet which we hope to see on more of their men's watches. A rubber-coated two-piece titanium bracelet with a patented cushioning system. The black elastomer coating is a similar substance to what you see on the Apple Watch. The bracelet has an Oysterlock clasp in solid 18k Everose gold which seals the deal. Rolex held nothing back in reinventing and over-engineering the perfect rubber bracelet that has the same elasticity as a metal bracelet without the initial cold feeling of a metal bracelet when first placed on a wrist. Now it's just a matter of time before a platinum Rolex comes with a rubber Oysterflex bracelet.

In 2015 Rolex introduces the Rolex Yachtmaster watch model #116655, the first Rolex watch with the all-new rubber Oysterflex band with an 18k rose gold clasp. After its creation, they saw all that they have made …and it was good.

Most recently this watch has been upgraded with a new movement and new reference number that we sell new, in its original box, with a warranty, and with free shipping to the United States. The new Rolex 126655 Yachtmaster 40mm is essentially the same watch with a few improvements. Specifically, the caliber inside has been replaced with the Rolex in-house caliber 3235, a Superlative Chronometer with exceptional precision, 31 watch jewels, Paraflex shock absorbers, and a substantially longer power reserve duration of approximately 70 hours.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Reference 116681 is very similar to other references in the Rolex family, however it offers a slightly different look. Made of 904L stainless steel, this unique reference features a striking Everose Rolesor bracelet. This bracelet is made of matching stainless steel with a contrasting strip of Everose gold right down the middle. This gives the watch a very unique look when compared with other model watches.

Similarly, this reference features a Rolex Ring Command bezel which offers bidirectional 90° rotatable interaction with the movement. It is comprised of a striking and highly visible blue Cerachrom insert with numerals coated in 18k gold. The white dial looks complicated, but is actually simple to use. It features a programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization as well as gold markers and center hour and minute hands. There is even a small seconds hand at 6 o'clock. Like several other new Rolex models, this reference utilizes the caliber 4161 movement. This controls the programmable countdown and offers stop-seconds for precise time setting. With its unique combination of stainless steel and Everose gold, this watch offers an extra level of luxury and functionality one would expect on a Yacht.

Staying on course

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 in 18 ct Everose gold with an Oysterflex bracelet.

Diamond-paved dial, optimal brilliance.

Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds – the noblest and most precious stones are selected to grace Rolex timepieces. The brand has in-house expertise and equipment enabling it to bejewel any model in its catalogue.

Experienced gemmologists first select gemstones of the highest quality. For this, they can rely on their own seasoned judgement as well as state-of-the-art analysis equipment. The stones are then entrusted to the gem-setters, who skilfully place each precious stone onto the watch by hand, one by one, assuring precision to within hundredths of a millimetre. Such stringent tolerances guarantee that each stone shines with optimal brilliance and is perfectly aligned with those around it. These time-honoured gestures, which may be repeated many hundreds of times, ensure that each gem-set watch produced by Rolex sparkles with exceptional intensity and reflects the standard of excellence required by the brand.

Bidirectional Rotatable Bezel

Timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

The Oysterflex Bracelet

Highly resistant and durable.

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.

The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 ct Everose gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed by the brand and patented. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

18 ct Everose gold

An exclusive patent

To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, Rolex created and patented an exclusive 18 ct pink gold alloy cast in its own foundry: Everose gold.

Introduced in 2005, 18 ct Everose is used on all Rolex Oyster models in pink gold.

Let us now proceed with the first template, "Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity."

Template Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity

Good morning, respected teachers, dear students, and honored guests,

I stand before you today with a message that emphasizes the significance of embracing diversity and inclusivity within our school community. Each one of us comes from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and it is this diversity that enriches our learning environment.

As we gather in this morning assembly, let us celebrate our unique identities and recognize the beauty of our differences. By fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and respect, we can create a safe space where everyone feels valued and appreciated for who they are.

Let us make a commitment to practice empathy and compassion towards one another. By doing so, we can build strong bonds of friendship and understanding, bridging the gaps that may divide us. Together, we can create a harmonious community where each person's voice is heard and respected.

Remember, it is through the collective efforts of every student and staff member that we can truly create an inclusive and supportive school environment. Let us take this opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate our diversity, and grow into individuals who promote unity and harmony.

Thank you for your attention, and let us all work together to make our school a place where everyone feels welcomed and cherished.

Template The Power of Kindness

Good morning, everyone!

Today, I want to talk to you about the power of kindness. In our busy lives, it is easy to get caught up in our own concerns and forget the impact a simple act of kindness can have on others.

A kind word, a friendly smile, or a helping hand can brighten someone's day and make a world of difference. Kindness not only brings joy to others but also helps us feel more connected and content within ourselves.

As members of this school community, let us make a conscious effort to be kind to one another. Let us lend a helping hand to those in need, offer support to our friends, and show compassion to those facing challenges.

In the classroom, let us encourage and uplift our classmates, celebrating each other's successes and offering a helping hand when someone is struggling. Outside of school, let us extend our kindness to our families, neighbors, and strangers we encounter in our daily lives.

Remember, a small act of kindness can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to do the same. Let us be the change we want to see in our school and society.

Thank you for listening, and I challenge each one of you to spread kindness wherever you go.

Template The Importance of Resilience

Good morning, esteemed teachers, fellow students, and special guests,

Today, I want to talk about an essential quality that can help us navigate through life's challenges and emerge stronger - resilience.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, to face adversity with courage, and to never lose hope in the face of difficult circumstances. It is an invaluable trait that can empower us to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.

Throughout our lives, we will encounter various obstacles, both in our studies and personal lives. It is during these tough times that our resilience is tested. But remember, it is not about avoiding failure; it is about learning from it and growing stronger as a result.

In our pursuit of knowledge and excellence, we may face failures, disappointments, and criticism. However, it is crucial to see these experiences as opportunities for growth rather than as reasons to give up.

Let us support one another and provide encouragement during challenging times. Together, we can create a culture where failure is not stigmatized, but rather seen as a stepping stone towards success.

As we move forward in our academic journey, let us embrace resilience as a guiding force. With determination, perseverance, and a positive mindset, we can overcome any obstacles that come our way.

Thank you for your attention, and let us all embrace resilience as we strive for excellence in every aspect of our lives.

Template Our Responsibility to the Environment

As we gather here for the morning assembly, let us take a moment to reflect on our responsibility towards the environment. Our planet is facing critical challenges, including climate change, pollution, and depletion of natural resources.

As young individuals, we hold the power to make a positive impact on the environment. Our actions, both big and small, collectively contribute to the well-being of our planet.

Let us pledge to be mindful of our consumption patterns and reduce waste. Simple steps like recycling, using less plastic, and conserving water can go a long way in preserving our environment.

Additionally, let us be advocates for change. We can raise awareness about environmental issues within our school and community. By engaging in initiatives like tree-planting drives, clean-up campaigns, and energy-saving projects, we can actively contribute to the betterment of our surroundings.

Moreover, let us encourage others to adopt eco-friendly practices and lead by example. The choices we make today will impact the future generations to come, and it is our duty to leave behind a sustainable and healthy planet.

By working together, we can be the change agents that our world needs. Let us be responsible stewards of the environment and take action to create a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future.

Thank you for your attention, and let us all make a commitment to protecting our planet and preserving its beauty for generations to come.

A morning school assembly starts when all students, teachers, the principal and other members of the administration gathered in the assembly hall. If the gathering is chaotic and the students are disorganised, the anchor may guide them by saying:

“I would request the students to please stand in a line and maintain silence. The morning assembly will begin in a minute. Thank you.”

Once everyone is present and it’s time to start, the anchor may begin by saying a quote, a famous paragraph or a short, meaningful poem to capture everyone’s attention. Here, we have listed a few quotes that you can use in your script:

  • “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” – George Bernard Shaw
  • “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eight. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” – Henry Ford
  • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

After that, it is important to welcome everyone to the assembly. A welcome speech may look something like this:

“Hello and warm good morning to our respected Principal Sir / Ma’am, our beloved teachers, staff members and of course, my dear schoolmates. I am [your name] from class [x] , your anchor for today’s morning assembly. The date today is May 17th, 2022 and it is a Tuesday. We will start this beautiful day by saying our daily prayer first. I request everyone to please stand straight, join their hands and close their eyes. We will begin now. – [Saying the prayer.] “

After the daily prayer, if there are songs or hymns to be sung, the anchor may then ask the choir to proceed and lead everyone.

“Now, it is time for us to sing ‘Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful’ and praise the Lord. I would like to ask our school choir to proceed with the hymn and lead everyone. Today, Father [Pastor name] will also be joining us. Thank you.”

“We will now sing ‘God’s love is so wonderful.’ I would request our choir to lead everyone. Thank you.”

If there is a tradition in the school to read verses from The Bible every day during the morning assembly, the anchor may then ask the school pastor to come on the podium and read the verses.

“I would now like to request Father [name of the pastor] to kindly come up on the podium and read verses from The Bible. Everyone, please pay attention and listen to Father well. Thank you.”

“Now, it is time for us to take the National Pledge. Please stand at attention and repeat the pledge after me. –

India is my country; all Indians are my brothers and sisters.

I love my country, and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worthy of it.

I shall respect my parents, teachers and all elders and treat everyone with courtesy.

To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion.

In their well being and prosperity lies my happiness.

Thank you.”

“The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.” – William Blake

“It is always great to start the morning with great thought. Great thought has the potential to inspire, motivate and illuminate thousands of minds. Now, I would like to invite [name of the student] from class [x] to share with us the thought of the day.”

“Thank you, [name of the student]. That was really interesting. We would definitely ponder upon it. You may now take your position.”

“If people are informed they will do the right thing. It’s when they are not informed that they become hostages to prejudice.” – Charlayne Hunter-Gault

“Being aware of our surroundings, having the knowledge of what is happening around us, in our city, in our country and around the world, is indeed very important in this day and age. It helps us stay updated, increases our general knowledge and helps us stay safe. I would now like to request [name of the student] from class [x] to come up to the stage and share with us the important news for the day.”

“Thank you, [name of the student] . It was so nice to hear that the humanitarian bill has finally been passed in Parliament. It will definitely help many people. You may now take your position.”

“Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong, it’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” – G.D. Anderson

“Today, [name of the student] from class [x] is going to share with us his/her views and opinions on the topic of ‘women empowerment and feminism’. I would like to request [name of the student] to please come up on the stage.”

“What a great speech. It indeed sheds light on the current situation of women in our country. Education and financial independence are truly important if we want to empower women. Thank you, [name of the student]. You may now take your position.”

Note: Here, we have used ‘women empowerment and feminism’ as an example. You may replace it with the topic provided to you and use a quote that matches the topic.

“Today, the following students are celebrating their birthdays:

[Name 1] from class [-]  [Name 2] from class [-] [Name 3] from class [-]

May God bless them. Let us all wish them and sing a birthday song for them.

‘Happy birthday to you,  Happy birthday to you,  Happy birthday dear students, Happy birthday to you.’

[Claps]

Thank you, everyone.”

Inviting the Principal to Say a Few Words

“I would now like to invite our respected Principal Sir / Ma’am to come up to the stage and say a few words to motivate us. Thank you.”

“That was indeed motivating and inspiring. There is indeed no shortcut to success. We must work hard and study diligently. We will surely remember your words. Thank you so much, Sir / Ma’am.”

National Anthem

“Now it is time for us to sing our National Anthem. I would request everyone to please stand at attention.”

[Jana Gana Mana]

“Thank you, everyone. You may now stand at ease.”

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” — Albert Einstein

“We have now reached the conclusion of our school’s morning assembly for today. Thank you for joining us. You may now move back to your respective classes. Have a good and productive day. Thank you.”

If possible, try calling your school’s principal before wrapping up the event. Through this speech, you will get remarks for your hosting. Furthermore, it takes the burden of concluding the event on a high note off your shoulders.

While calling your principal on the stage, say a few words of praise for him/ her in a brief manner. A short speech from the principal will make the morning assembly in school even more energetic and insightful.

Conclude the School Morning Assembly Presentation Script with a Thank You Message

After the speech of the principal marks the end of the morning assembly, you must not forget to thank everyone for their active participation in the event. Thank all the participants for gracing the morning assembly with their presence.

Show gratitude towards the principal and all the teachers present in the assembly. Finally, end the event with a positive thought to give everyone’s day a positive start.

Below is a sample of the best anchoring script for a school assembly with all of these ideas incorporated. You can go through this sample and edit and modify it as per the requirements for your School Morning Assembly Presentation Script.

how to make a school assembly speech

James Handscombe offers his thoughts on how to make the most of your school assembly, and what it takes to keep your audience engaged…

Crafting a powerful assembly takes time. It involves writing 1,500 words in coherent sentences and structured paragraphs so that the listener, without aids to memory or concentration, is at least able to take away the key messages.

This, therefore, is the first characteristic of a powerful assembly – messages that are clearly communicated and rendered memorable.

That said, a great assembly does more than simply hammer home some key messages – it exemplifies the school ethos. It not only tells, but also shows. When sitting in a powerful assembly, you’ll hear described the aspirations of the community, but also see them lived.

“A great assembly does more than simply hammer home some key messages”

Exactly what characteristics the assembly has will thus depend on the ethos of the school in which you work. Using someone else’s assembly as inspiration is wise; downloading and delivering it as written, much less so.

The final characteristic of a great assembly springs from that idea of communicating an ethos. Every assembly is a teaching opportunity. Students should go away having learned something.

Show not tell

To achieve these ends, you can deploy:

  • personal anecdotes
  • high culture references
  • pop culture references
  • tales from history
  • stories of inspiring heroes

To tie it all together, you can draw on your own ruminations and reflections, the words of your foundational documents or the content of assemblies gone by. This is a team effort, of course, since building an ethos is the work of many speakers.

The idea of showing, rather than simply telling is an extraordinarily powerful one for an assembly writer. We encourage students to use their words cleverly and develop a wide vocabulary. Assemblies give them opportunities to see us doing the same ourselves.

“The idea of showing, rather than simply telling is an extraordinarily powerful one for an assembly writer”

Assemblies also remove us from our expertise pigeonholes. A maths teacher can endorse the interests of the history teacher. The English teacher can speak to the beauty of maths.

They allow us to communicate our humanity and tell tales of misspent youth, recount eccentric enthusiasms and share the words and music that make our fragile hearts beat faster.

In an assembly we can pass on the advice and life lessons we long for students to learn, but which simply won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum.

High and low

One of the most challenging decisions you’ll make is how to pitch your cultural allusions. Should you talk about autumn by invoking Axl Rose’s words on the cold ‘November Rain’, or by citing John Keats’ misty and far mellower ode?

My reflection on this is that assemblies are about learning, so we should expose them to things they don’t know. I like to aim just over their heads. Try for content that will be largely new to them, but which they may have at least heard of, dipped into or been intrigued by. This way, they should be looking up and lifted by what is offered.

This approach gives you the opportunity to stealthily drop popular culture references into your discussion with the same gravitas and respect you’d afford great writers from centuries past.

It emphasises that the students’ existing culture is valuable, and worthy of engagement and reflection. It also encourages them to listen out for your roguish tricks. They might just be listening carefully for the next sneaky Taylor Swift lyric, but at least they are listening.

Natural bias

Another challenge is that your cultural touchstones will spring from the minuscule part of human experience that is your life thus far.

On our own, none of us can ever be as culturally diverse as the schools we serve – a natural bias we would do well to monitor and take active steps to remedy.

“On our own, none of us can ever be as culturally diverse as the schools we serve”

Expressing your own character and sharing your culture with students is a real privilege of delivering an assembly, and one we shouldn’t be shy of (Paul Simon and JRR Tolkien are frequent visitors to my scripts).

However, we must also be careful not to give the impression that this is the only culture we’re interested in. Or worse, that this is the only culture that has value.

The poetry of Rabindranath Tagore; the novels of James Baldwin; the history of Sudan – all have an equal claim to time and space. Writing an assembly is an opportunity for us to learn something new ourselves, as well as teach.

Cross-referencing

When approached as a standalone presentation, however, even a truly brilliant assembly will lack power.

An assembly’s greatness comes from its place in a collection, which is why I believe assembly givers should also be listeners. The best cultural reference for an assembly is another assembly – ideally one given by someone else.

These cross-references allow assemblies to reinforce and build on each other. They turn ephemeral, individual pieces into a rich and evolving tapestry of shared understanding.

They can tap into and develop the ethos of the school, and turn a building into a community.

  • An assembly is made up of stories, references, a big picture ethos and take-home messages. Start with one and add the others in.
  • Your take-home message must be clear; structure the assembly to make it so.
  • You are exemplifying good writing for the students; spend time crafting your sentences and paragraphs.
  • Remember that an assembly is another opportunity for pupils to learn something, especially advice and life lessons that won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum.
  • Your assembly isn’t just what you say, but how you say it. Make sure you’re in touch with the school ethos and its aspirations
  • Take inspiration from all walks of life. This includes high culture, pop culture, tales from history, stories of inspiring heroes or warnings from the lives of villains. Ensure these sources are culturally diverse
  • Aim high with your content. Assemblies should expose pupils to things that are new to them, or which they may be somewhat familiar with and would like to explore further.
  • Have fun with your assemblies. Be your own, idiosyncratic self.

how to make a school assembly speech

A 20-minute primary school assembly can be a wonderful time for both children and teachers. Young children have a real thirst for knowledge, and an endless fascination with the world around them which we, as teachers, need to nurture.

By providing a great start to the day, children can be inspired and motivated, while teachers can be given ideas and themes which they may want to develop in their own classrooms.

If you’re a headteacher, an assembly is a great chance not only to entertain and enthuse the children, but to prove that even though you are no longer in the classroom, you can still fascinate children and hold their attention with ease. It certainly gives you a great deal of ‘corridor credibility’ with teaching staff.

Start with just one word

Sometimes, I’d start an assembly very simply with just a word. ‘Impossible’, for example. “What does it mean?” I’d say. “Something you can’t do,” the children would reply. And then I’d show that it wasn’t necessarily so.

“By providing a great start to the day, children can be inspired and motivated”

After seating five teachers on a wooden gymnastics bench, I challenged a tiny infant pupil to lift up the bench. The children said it was impossible.

Then, to their great amusement, I put a car jack under one end of the bench and the infant pumped it up with ease. This led to a discussion on other amazing machines and how they work; the crane, for example, which was being used on a housing development opposite the school.

And once I’d shown how the impossible could become possible, more ideas quickly came to mind and provided assemblies for a whole week.

It was easy for a child to cut a hole in a sheet of paper that they could put their hand through, but could they cut a hole in a postcard that they could climb through? Impossible? Not at all.

And surely it was impossible for a sentence like ‘Tom, where Fred had had had had had had had had had had been the correct answer’ to make any sense at all? No, with the correct punctuation it was indeed possible.

Let others take the lead

Children themselves are an amazing resource for assemblies. Many of them will have a hobby or interest, and it only takes a little gentle persuasion for them to be willing to share it with everybody else.

Teachers and classroom assistants can usually be persuaded to do a turn as well. One of my classroom helpers was a dab hand at building Victorian-style dolls’ houses, and the children were fascinated to learn how she constructed all the tiny furniture for them.

“Children themselves are an amazing resource for assemblies”

Simple maths puzzle idea

An interesting assembly can be created from the simplest of ideas and with a minimal amount of preparation. Get a sheet of white A1 paper, a big pair of scissors and a glue stick and you’re ready to go.

Tell the children you’re going to show them an interesting mathematical puzzle. Cut four strips from the paper, each measuring about 60cm x 8cm.

Take the first strip, put a little glue on one end and paste it into a circle. Now say you’re going to push the scissors into the strip and cut all the way round the circle.

As you cut, ask the children what you’ll end up with. They will say, rightly of course, that you’ll end up with two separate loops, each about 4cm wide.

Next, take another strip, join the ends again, but just before you do so, give one end of the strip a half turn. Again cut all the way round the loop, and ask what you’ll end up with. The children will probably say two loops again. In fact, you end up with one very large loop.

Then take the third strip, and before gluing give one end a full turn. What do you end up with this time? Surprisingly, two linked rings. So what would happen if you gave the fourth strip a turn and a half? Or two turns?

Children can experiment with this in their classrooms, but in the meantime you could finish the assembly by telling them about the mathematician Mobius.

how to make a school assembly speech

Robert Cann makes the case for why schools’ collective worship obligations need replacing with inclusive assemblies …

At Humanists UK, we believe assemblies are best when they bring school communities together by focusing on the values that unite everyone – regardless of their religion or belief.

To this end, we’ve been supporting Baroness Burt and Crispin Blunt MP, sponsors of the Education (Assemblies) Bill in the Lords and Commons respectively.

‘Broadly Christian’

Unearthing ancient laws that remain on the statute book long after their time can be an entertaining use of one’s time.

Despite the old wives’ tale, it definitely is illegal to shoot a Welshman with a longbow within Chester’s city walls (or indeed anywhere else), but you definitely must not enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour, or you’ll be in breach of the Coming Armed to Parliament Act 1313.

There’s another outdated law, one dating from 1944, that requires every state school in England – including those without ‘religious character’ – to hold a daily act of collective religious worship.

Where schools are faith schools, this worship must be in line with the faith of the school. Where they’re not, it must be ‘broadly Christian’ in style.

This makes the UK the only sovereign state in the world to impose Christian worship in state schools as standard, which is a remarkable legal anomaly given our increasingly secular times.

Daily worship

Some readers might be rolling their eyes at this point. Your own school may have assemblies less frequently than every day, and perhaps without any sign of collective worship at all. Yet many schools continue to comply with this law, either in whole or in part.

“This makes the UK the only sovereign state in the world to impose Christian worship in state schools as standard”

A YouGov poll of parents taken last year found that 20% thought their child definitely took part in a daily act of collective worship, with 25% unsure. Fewer than half (47%) said such daily worship definitely did not take place.

Just because a law isn’t universally complied with, it doesn’t follow that reform is unnecessary. Indeed, the government indicated that if it was made aware of English schools breaching the requirement to carry out daily worship, they would be ‘investigated’ and ‘reminded of their duty on this matter’.

In schools where such daily acts do take place, those children who are withdrawn can, at best, be left twiddling their thumbs, and at worst, be ostracised from their peers as the structured school day starts without them.

No higher authority than the United Nations has got involved, with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child having urged the UK to repeal its collective worship laws.

Inclusive assemblies

It’s therefore high time that things were brought up to date, which is where the Education (Assemblies) Bill comes into play.

The Bill proposes to remove the collective worship requirement in schools with no religious character. Instead, those schools will have to hold inclusive assemblies that are suitable for all children, regardless of their religion or belief.

These assemblies could, of course, include religious topics, but would lack the worship element.

Collective worship in faith schools would be left alone, though the Bill does specify that children who have been withdrawn from worship in faith schools must be provided with a meaningful educational alternative.

Socially important

A change in the law would be popular. The aforementioned YouGov poll further found that 60% of parents with school-age children oppose enforcement of the collective worship law, while just 24% are in favour.

Parents surveyed in 2019 ranked religious worship last among 13 possible assembly topics, with 29% thinking it appropriate, compared with 76% who opted for ‘the environment and nature’ and 74% choosing ‘equality and non-discrimination’.

“60% of parents with school-age children oppose enforcement of the collective worship law”

The Education (Assemblies) Bill would be both long overdue, and a socially important new law. If you agree with us that inclusive assemblies are the way forward, please contact your own MP and request that they speak up on your behalf in support of the Bill.

Just leave the suit of armour at home if meeting them in person…

It’s a lovely way to begin our day with a prayer. Our parents and grandparents have instilled in us the habit of starting our day with a prayer, and the school reinforces this practice. It’s a positive way to kickstart our day with a morning prayer. Early in the morning, we all assemble in the playground to sing the prayer, and the most delightful aspect of the morning is the presence of birds. They gather in the trees and listen to the prayers along with us.”
  • “We all cherish the beautiful memories of our school days, and the morning assembly stands out as one of the most memorable parts. It’s a wonderful way to commence our day with a serene prayer that brings peace to our minds before we embark on our daily activities. Our parents and grandparents have instilled in us the importance of starting our days with a morning prayer, and this practice is upheld in our schools as well. My school days are filled with a mix of good and bad memories, but the morning assembly holds some of the fondest ones. It’s the time when all students, teachers, and support staff gather in the playground for the morning prayer. Each class had the opportunity to organise the morning assembly for a week, with a different value or theme assigned to each week. This tradition remained constant throughout our years as school students.”

Overall, the morning assembly serves as a valuable platform for fostering a sense of community, promoting positive values, and providing students with a well-rounded educational experience beyond the classroom.

Assemblies are an important part of the school experience. They bring students, teachers, staff, and other members of the school community together, and provide opportunities for enriching the students’ education. You might be called upon to conduct an assembly at some point if you are a school administrator, teacher, or student council leader. Organizing and conducting an assembly can be a complicated and stressful task, but with good planning, you can make your next assembly a positive experience for your school.

Planning Your Assembly

Step 1 Determine a theme for the assembly.

  • For example, if you’re having an assembly to celebrate Earth Day, you might focus on how students can reduce their carbon footprint.
  • For a first day of school assembly, you could give the students a general introduction to the rules and culture of the school.
  • Try to link the content of the assembly to subjects that your students have some prior knowledge of—e.g., a unit they have recently been working on in class. This will make it feel more engaging and relevant to them. [2] X Research source

Step 2 Keep a checklist of things to do before and during the assembly.

  • Have a colleague look over your checklist to make sure you’ve included all the important points.
  • Your checklist might include things like contacting potential speakers, arranging refreshment deliveries, and reserving audio-visual equipment.
  • You may need to revise and expand your checklist as you get further into the planning process.

Step 3 Enlist 1 or more speakers.

  • Have a conversation with your speaker ahead of time about the theme of the assembly and what role you want them to play in the event.
  • Your speaker could be a member of the school staff (e.g., a teacher or administrator), a student, or even a special guest (such as an author, researcher, or local celebrity).
  • For example, if you’re holding an assembly to celebrate Black History Month, you might invite a prominent member of the local African American community (such as your local NAACP chapter president) to speak.
  • If you can, start reaching out to speakers at least 2 months in advance. This will give them plenty of time to clear their schedule and prepare a presentation.

Step 4 Plan activities for your assembly if you wish.

  • Try to keep assembly activities fun and appropriate for the grade level(s) at your school. For example, a trivia challenge might be a great activity for a middle school or high school assembly. Elementary school students might enjoy physical team-building activities like relay races.
  • To find fun ideas for assembly activities, check out online resources like this one from the Washington Activity Coordinators Association: https://www.wacaonline.org/school-spirit.html .

Step 5 Make a list of people who will attend the assembly.

  • Teachers and staff who will be attending.
  • Speakers and special guests.
  • Student groups (e.g., individual grades or the entire student body).
  • Parents and other outside attendees.

Step 6 Schedule your assembly at a convenient time.

  • In addition to the date, you will need to take the planned length of the assembly into account. For example, if your assembly is set to last 2 hours, try to schedule it at a time when it will not overlap with or cut into other school activities.

Step 7 Meet with the school staff to create an agenda and management plan.

  • What the themes will be, and how long each part of the assembly will last.
  • What types of space and equipment you will need for the assembly.
  • What the audience’s role in the assembly will be (e.g., will there be time for discussions or question-and-answer sessions?).
  • Whether you anticipate any problems or challenges, such as managing student behavior or providing special accommodations for any guests.
  • What roles different participants will play in the event (e.g., will you have staff and teachers on hand to manage seating and monitor student behavior? Can you assign students to hand out programs?).
  • The logistics of seating the students. For example, you may wish to seat the youngest grades in front, since this will give them better visibility and keep them more engaged.
  • How to handle a potential crisis. For example, how would you evacuate the space most efficiently in case of an emergency?

Step 8 Send a written agenda to everyone participating in the assembly.

  • The date and time of the assembly.
  • The theme of the assembly.
  • The name(s) of your speaker(s) or special guest(s).
  • The schedule of events.

Step 9 Request any necessary audio-visual equipment.

  • Some schools may require a particular advanced notice period (e.g., at least 2 weeks) for reserving AV equipment. Check with the appropriate office at your school to find out how far in advance to put in your request.

Step 10 Book your assembly space in advance.

  • Different schools may have different rules for how far in advance you need to book space for an event, but you may need to plan several months ahead. Check with your school’s administrative office for details.
  • Make sure the space you select is big enough to safely accommodate your assembly. If not, you may need to divide the event up into multiple parts (e.g., 1 assembly for half of the students in the school, and a second for the other half).

Step 11 Create assembly programs.

  • The name and theme of the assembly (e.g., “Fresh Starts and New Beginnings: Celebrating a New School Year at Wooster Elementary”).
  • The date, time, and location of the assembly.
  • The schedule of events at the assembly.
  • Any other important details, such as information about how attendees can request special accommodations.

Organizing the Assembly Space

Step 1 Make sure all audio-visual equipment is set up and working.

  • If your school has a technology expert on staff, make sure they are on call in case something unexpectedly goes wrong during the event.

Step 2 Examine the space to make sure it is clean and in good repair.

  • Event programs
  • Feedback questionnaires
  • Logistical information for organizers and participants
  • Informational flyers or handouts relating to the theme of the assembly

Step 4 Get any refreshments set up.

  • If you have speaker or special guest, show them the AV setup and review their part in the event. Briefly go over the schedule with them. For example, “First I’m going to give a 5-minute welcome speech, then I will introduce you. You’ll be standing at this podium, and you can load your slide presentation onto the school laptop here.”
  • Have a quick debriefing with any teachers, students, or staff members who will be helping with practical matters like seating guests, handing out flyers, or running the AV equipment.

Holding the Assembly

Step 1 Invite your guests and participants into the space.

  • Have each group wait in their classroom before calling them in, so that the halls don’t become overcrowded.
  • Hand out programs and other materials as the guests enter the space.

Step 2 Signal for attention once everyone is seated.

  • Ask your teachers to prepare their students in advance by letting them know what sort of behavior will be expected during the assembly.
  • You can help create a sense of order and community by having the students do a group activity at the beginning of the assembly, such as singing a school song or doing a cheer.

Step 3 Present a brief welcoming speech.

  • For example, you might briefly review where the emergency exits are and ask students and other guests to silence their phones.
  • Keep it short, upbeat, and to-the-point. Your audience (and your speaker!) will become bored and restless if you give an unnecessarily long and wordy introduction.

Step 4 Introduce your speaker(s)...

  • For example, you might say, “Dr. Glossop is a psychologist who has been serving our community for the past 20 years. He’s here today to talk to you about some of the challenges you might be facing as you begin your teen years.”
  • If there is an interactive element to the presentation, it may be helpful for you to encourage students to participate. For example, if the speaker asks a question and nobody volunteers to answer, try calling on a student.

Step 5 Announce the start of any other activities or events.

  • For example, if the students will be playing a game, describe the objective and the rules.

Step 6 Dismiss your guests and students once the assembly is done.

  • Make sure to thank your speaker(s) and any other presenters or performers when they are finished, before you dismiss the audience. Encourage the audience to give them a round of applause.

Step 7 Ask your participants for feedback.

  • You can also have a meeting with school staff after the event to find out what they think went well and what could have gone better.
  • You might also encourage teachers to have a conversation with their students after the assembly. After all, the assembly is primarily for the students’ benefit—it is important to listen to their feedback and find out how you might make the experience better and more engaging for them next time.

Step 8 Take care to clean up the space after the event is done.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • If you’re inviting a special guest to present at the assembly, having your students create invitation cards can be a fun way to make the guest feel welcome and get the students excited about the event. [9] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Thought of The Day and Speech for Daily School Assembly

Hello Readers, The school morning assembly is a very enjoyable group of activities. Believe me, when I was a child, I eagerly waited for my turn to present any morning activity. My favorite activity was the Anchoring Script and the Thought of the Day. However, my childhood days have passed, and now it’s your turn. So, kids, enjoy every moment of the assemblies.

Now, coming to the point, if you’re preparing for your anchoring script, speech, or thought of the day, then don’t worry. I have collected some thoughts for you. I have also written a simple and motivational speech for the morning assembly.

2 Minute Speech for Daily Assembly

The length of the speech is ideal for about 1 to 2 minutes. This is perfect for a quick, motivating message during a morning assembly. This is engaging and concise for the students.

Speech Sample for Students

Today, I want to talk about the power of believing in yourself. Imagine you are a little seed. For that seed to grow, it needs sunlight, water, and care—even on the days when clouds cover the sky. In the same way, you have the potential to grow and succeed every single day, regardless of the challenges you face.

Always remember, each difficult moment offers an opportunity to become stronger. When obstacles appear and things seem tough, don’t give up. Instead, keep trying, keep learning, and keep believing in your abilities.

Let’s support one another, let’s remain curious, and let’s approach each day with bravery and a bright smile.

Thank you for listening. Now, let’s go out there and make today an incredible day!
