New Launches Cannes Yachting Festival

For yacht shoppers, the Cannes Yachting Festival, which runs from September 10 to 15, is the place to see a raft of world debuts. The show in the tony French Riviera city marks the start of the international boat show season. Its offerings of 700 vessels from 16 to 165 feet includes many global debuts, from sailing vessels to motoryachts, to multihulls and a dozen other boat types. The show has about 4 miles of dock space.

While Cannes doesn’t have the superyacht glitz of the Monaco Yacht Show, its fleet continues to grow each year, both by units and hull lengths. Its two locations, Vieux Port and Port Canto, have very different fleets. Located in the heart of the city along the famed Croisette, Vieux Port is one of the oldest ports on the Côte d’Azur and home to the largest motoryachts and superyachts at the show. This year will also see Port Canto, the smaller exhibition area usually reserved for sailing yachts, dedicate space to motorboats with lengths of 43 feet and under.

Headliners this year will include the 148-foot Tankoa Go , the 114-foot compact explorer Fox from Pendennis, Otam’s 90-foot Sexy Me , and two new models from Azimut’s Seadeck Series of low emission yachts, the Seadeck 6 and 7.

Here are 12 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Pendennis ‘Fox’

sunreef launched yachts

The recently delivered, 114-foot Fox is an explorer yacht named after Falmouth-born, 19th-century scientist Robert Were Fox the Younger, who invented the compass that guided the first expedition to the South Pole. Built by Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, U.K., the yacht marries a muscular, military-style exterior with bright and modern beach-house interiors. It sleeps 10 guests in five suites, including a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck.

Columbus Atlantique 43 ‘Frette’

sunreef launched yachts

The second hull in Columbus Yachts’s 141-foot Atlantique 43 series, Frette features Frette Bespoke linens—the Italian luxury brand the yacht is named after. The exterior and interior are designed by Hot Lab, with naval architecture by Hydro Tec. The yacht is defined by its large outdoor areas. A highlight is the 16-square-foot pool at the stern positioned about two feet above the waterline. Guest accommodations on Frette ‘s lower deck include five double cabins, three twins, and two VIPs that can convert into one large VIP suite.

OTAM ‘Sexy Me’

sunreef launched yachts

Otam’s new flagship yacht, the Otam 90 GTS Sexy Me , will make its world debut at Cannes following successful sea trials where the 92-footer hit blistering speeds of 45 knots—three knots faster than its contracted top speed. The power comes from a pair of 2,600 hp MTU engines and Arneson surface-drive propellers. Fittingly, the yacht’s helm console is inspired by racing cars with a carbon-fiber structure that resembles the protective “halo” system used by Formula 1 cars. The air intakes on the front of the yacht and “snorkel” on the hardtop purposely resemble the hood and roof scoops on luxury supercars.

60 Sunreef Power Eco

sunreef launched yachts

The 60 Sunreef Power Eco is the smallest model in its solar catamaran range. Launched under the Sunreef Yachts Eco flag, the 60-footer relies on engineered solar panels developed in-house by the Polish builder. The photovoltaic technology uses efficient, shock-resistant, flexible, and ultra-thin solar panels integrated in the yacht’s composite structure, including the hull, mast, superstructure, bow terrace, and bimini roof. Key features include a customizable semi-open salon, a large bow terrace and flybridge with a spa pool, a bar, a dining area, and sunpads. It may be 60 feet long, but its interior volume equals a yacht 20 feet longer.

Azimut Seadeck 6

sunreef launched yachts

The 58-foot Seadeck 6 is the debut model from Azimut’s Seadeck Series of low emission yachts. According to Azimut, owners can save as reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by as much as 40 percent. The savings come from a lightened carbon-fiber superstructure, a hybrid propulsion system and an optimized hull that is wider at the stern and streamlined at the bow. According Azimut, the hull shape allows the yacht to plane sooner, reducing drag at lower speeds. Azimut’s 72-foot sistership Seadeck 7 will also be at Cannes, where it will make its world debut.

Custom Line ‘Sodan’

sunreef launched yachts

Ferretti’s 126-foot Sodan , the eighth hull in the popular Custom Line 120 series, will be shown at Cannes this year by Burgess Yachts. Its raised pilothouse is a key feature of Francesco Paszkowski Design’s sporty exterior. The studio is also responsible for the interior, which has a functional layout and large social areas. Five well-appointed guest cabins include a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck with a private owner’s lounge.

Tankoa Yachts ‘Go’

sunreef launched yachts

Tankoa is launching Go at Cannes, the first of its T450 series. The 148-footer may be the largest new yacht at the show, but it’s the first vessel under 164 feet built by the Italian yard. Go , with its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, was developed in partnership with Cassetta Yacht Design & Architecture. It’s built for an American client who increased the gross tonnage from 430GT to 450GT to allow for greater interior volume, including a large owner’s suite forward on the main deck and five lower deck guest cabins. The beach club at the stern has opening sides when at anchor and a pool. “ Go is a great addition to the Tankoa core fleet. It is an incredibly flexible platform on which we can create semi-custom yachts, offering big volumes without compromising on the sleek and elegant lines,” said Claudio Corvino, Tankoa’s sales and business development danager for the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

WiderCat ‘Acali’

sunreef launched yachts

Wider Centro Stile and Luca Dini Design penned the first hull in the WiderCat 92 serie s . Acali is a roomy catamaran, featuring the builder’s serial hybrid-propulsion system. The main deck is dedicated to the owner’s suite, with a private foredeck lounge that occupies almost half of the interior space on that level. Two VIP cabins and two twin guest cabins are located on the lower deck. The tender garage has a dropdown transom hatch that turns into a swim platform when lowered. On the upper deck is an additional forward cockpit, sky lounge, and helm station.

Omikron OT-60

sunreef launched yachts

The OT-60 is the debut model for Omikron Yachts, a new subsidiary brand owned by Greek shipbuilder Olympic Marine. The Cannes Yachting Festival marks the world premiere of the series, which has six hulls that have been completed or are in build. The interior and exterior configurations are designed by Lorenzo Argento, with naval architecture by Juan Kouyoumdjian. The interiors are styled by Ciarmoli Queda Studio, featuring natural materials, neutral colors, and tactile finishes.

Silent 62 Tri-Deck

sunreef launched yachts

Optimized for outdoor living and warm climate sailing, Silent Yacht’s 62 3-Deck , full-electric catamaran promises quiet, emissions-free cruising. Powered by the builder’s signature solar technology, the 62-footer has transoceanic range when cruising at eight knots. A signature design is the large flybridge entertaining space, with dining and lounging areas. It’s matched with a bright main deck salon with large windows, an open galley, and a dining area. The customizable third deck is available in three versions: an open sky lounge, a closed sky lounge, or an owner’s suite.

Sirena 48 Hybrid

sunreef launched yachts

This Sirena 48 is the Turkish builder’s first hybrid offering of its series. It’s powered by a serial hybrid powertrain driven by twin 213kW electric motors. When cruising at 14 knots in electric mode, it has a range of 30 nautical miles. Other changes to the regular Sirena 48 include a sleek coupe-style coach roof with glass and solar panels for a sportier look. Replacing the previous open-air flybridge, it allows natural light into the main salon while reducing weight to improve the yacht’s performance and range in pure-electric mode.

The Sunreef 80 Eco Has Launched

  • By Yachting Staff
  • January 21, 2022

Sunreef 80 Eco

Sunreef Yachts has launched the 80 Eco, an all-electric yacht with ultralight solar panels integrated into the hull sides, mast, superstructure and Bimini roof.

“We take a great step forward with this truly pioneering yacht,” Francis Lapp, founder and president of Sunreef Yachts, stated in a press release. “Renewable energy is the key element in the design of the Sunreef 80 Eco. Thanks to a revolutionary solar power system, hydro-generation and performance sails, the Sunreef 80 Eco provides full autonomy, relying on the sun, water and wind.”

The yacht’s wind-free propulsion comes from twin 180 kW electric engines. Under sail, the Sunreef 80 Eco recovers energy from the passive motion of the two propellers by way of a hydro-generation system.

Are other Sunreef Eco models available? Yes. The Eco line also includes a 50, 60 , 70 and 100.

The 23.9-metre yacht was commissioned by a repeat customer, having previously owned two Sunreef yachts (including the 80 Power model Otoctone 80 ). Exterior design and naval architecture were completed in house.

Otoctone is fitted with Sunreef Yachts’ "revolutionary" solar power system, with the solar panels fully integrated within the composite structure. While under sail, the yacht's "advanced hydrogeneration system" will allow for the continuous production of green energy and an extended cruising range.

Though full details are yet to be disclosed, Otoctone will have a "custom-tailored" layout and accommodation for eight guests. She's been equipped with two 180 kW engines and a set of 550 kWh batteries.

Otoctone will begin charters in the west Mediterranean in the summer of 2024.

23 January 2019 Dominique SALANDRE News 0

Riviera yachts and Sun Marine Team

Australia’s luxury motor yacht builder, Riviera, continues to grow in the Americas with the appointment of Sun Country Marine as representative in southern California.

Sun Country Marine has three iconic coastal locations – at San Diego, Dana Point and Newport Beach. The company celebrated its 30th anniversary at the end of last year by opening two additional coastal offices, at Marina Del Ray and a second office in Newport Beach.

We were particularly impressed by Riviera

Sun Country Marine CEO Mike Basso said: “We are delighted to join the Riviera family. We have a great synergy with Riviera in our commitment to quality and to owner care.

“We were particularly impressed by Riviera’s spectacular nine-model showcase during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show late last year. It demonstrated a genuine commitment to the highest level of presentation of quality motor yachts” said Mike Basso from Sun Country Marine.

“Riviera’s five unique collections across Flybridge, Sport Yachts, SUVs, Sports Motor Yachts and the classically styled Belize models offer the options our clients demand. Our commitment to ensuring clients can directly touch and inspect new motor yachts is borne out through the nine new Riviera motor yachts, including three SUV models and three Sport Yachts that are now in production. We also have two 39 Sports Motor Yachts and a 395 SUV that will be arriving in southern California in early 2019.”

“We are proud to join Riviera to display three new motor yachts at this weekend’s San Diego Boat Show. We will have 445 and 525 SUV models and a 4800 Sport Yacht for boating enthusiasts to inspect.”

Riviera CEO Wes Moxey said that Sun Country Marine has for many years demonstrated a thorough understanding of the motor yacht market in California and is held in high esteem.

Riviera has a large and loyal owner base in California

“Riviera has a large and loyal owner base in California and Sun Country Marine will provide powerful support and service to our existing owners as well as to a growing market of luxury motor yacht enthusiasts.

“Our world-renowned quality, luxury, innovation, blue-water sea-keeping abilities and superior owner support will be further enhanced with the appointment of Mike Basso and his Sun Country Marine team.”

Sun Country Marine offers three different locations : San Diego Yacht Center, Dana Point Yacht Center and Newport Beach.

Tule Magnificent

Linda yamane’s tule reed boats honor ohlone tradition, ancient technologies.

For thousands of years, indigenous peoples throughout the current-day Bay Area used tule reeds to create a range of tools, clothing, and equipment, including variations of reed boats, mostly used for fishing and transportation.

While some of these traditions faded away as California’s Native Americans experienced the effects of colonization, Ohlone native and scholar Linda Yamane has spent more than three decades resurrecting many of the ancient technologies and sustainable ways of her ancestors. And her graceful reed canoes—like the 8.5-foot version commissioned by Santa Clara University’s de Saisset Museum —are among the most breathtaking of her creations .

Tule Boat at Museum

The Seaside resident constructs her boats, called kónon  in her Monterey-area Rumsien Ohlone language, using the tule reeds that still flourish in California’s wetlands.

“My work to bring back long-lost traditions has been satisfying on so many levels, especially to showcase the beauty and complexity of Ohlone culture, both for our own community and as a way of educating the public at large,” says the soft-spoken artist.

Yamane’s tule reed canoes aren’t just cultural heritage artwork; they are functional. The reason is the delicate internal structure of the tule reed that is filled with thousands of tiny air pockets, giving the reed its lightweight flexibility and buoyancy.

Thousands of years before their encounter with Spanish explorers in 1769, the Ohlone tribes of the Greater Bay Area used tule reeds not just for boats, but for thatching, as seen in the de Saisset Museum’s model-size conical tule reed house. Tule reeds, says Lauren Baines , ’08, ’09 ,  the museum’s assistant director, were also used to make mats, duck decoys, and occasionally in baskets.

A journey back in time

It was a journey into her past that launched Yamane’s interest in tule boats. Growing up in San Jose, she cherished the stories of her paternal grandmother , who had also instructed her in the medicinal uses of native plants.

Yamane understood that most of her family’s Ohlone cultural traditions had been lost, and she wondered about her ancestral language and songs, the types of items they had made, and even their traditional food.

She was nearly 30 when she began investigating her Rumsien roots in earnest, a daunting task given that so few accessible historical records existed. But her perseverance paid off when she discovered unpublished field notes written in the 1930s, originally archived in the Smithsonian, that described many of the skills and beliefs of her Ohlone ancestors.

Yamane knew that her family’s Ohlone roots began in the Carmel Valley and Monterey area, and through mission records she discovered that one of her ancestors was baptized in 1773 at what is now known as the Carmel Mission; that girl later moved with her family to an area near Mission Santa Clara. One century and four generations later, Yamane’s great-grandmother was baptized as an infant at Mission Santa Clara.

Beginning with baskets

It was 1984 when she began working to revive some of their practices, beginning with Ohlone basket weaving, examples of which were hard to find because Ohlone traditionally burned the belongings of those who had died. The few dozen baskets known to exist worldwide had been acquired during the Mission Period by early visitors to California’s Central Coast. So Yamane traveled to museums in California, New York City, Washington D.C., London and Paris to study the old baskets in those collections.

“I’m a person who makes things with my hands, so it was natural for me to be interested in tangible objects, and learn about these various old-time technologies,” she says. So far, Yamane has created 24 baskets, as well as feather dance capes and headdresses, ear ornaments, abalone necklaces, musical instruments and of course, boats.

Her introduction to tule boat-making occurred in 1987 as part of a group effort at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont . As they worked, she took photos, drew sketches and made notes about the laborious process.

Fifteen productive years went by, during which Yamane began learning the Rumsien Ohlone language and traditional songs. Through further research, she came across a number of traditional stories, some of which she compiled in two published volumes: When the World Ended, How Hummingbird Got Fire, How People Were Made (Oyate, 1995) and The Snake That Lived in the Santa Cruz Mountains & Other Ohlone Stories   (1998 Oyate).

Then, one day in 2002, she decided she wanted to make a tule reed boat. “So I got out those old notes and said, ‘Oh yeah, now I remember!’’’ Yamane recalls.

Her initial attempts were awkward, she admits, and not as sophisticated as the ones that later became mainstays in museums. But boat after boat, her skills improved, and she has now produced 30, several of them commissioned by museums and visitor centers in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Areas and Sacramento. (The de Saisset model is constructed to hold just one or two people, but larger ones could hold four or more passengers.)

“The process can be overwhelming, to be honest. It’s a lot of physical labor to harvest, transport and dry all the raw plant material,” says the active 70-year-old. “It’s a lot of work, and I’m not getting any younger.”

A painstaking process

The first part of her process begins in early July, after bird-nesting season ends in regional marsh areas, and she is able to harvest hundreds of the tall green reeds. Sometimes, friends will join her at a dry pond or lake’s edge to help cut the long stalks that will be bundled and carried to her car, and taken home.

Once there, she loosens the bundles and lays them out to dry, turning them daily for several weeks so their moisture evaporates, watching their color change from green to beige.

Then she bundles the dried reeds, binding them tightly together with rope, and begins to build the boat. While her ancestors would have probably used rope made from tule or cattail, Yamane says the amount of time it would take to assemble that much rope would be impractical today. So she uses commercially-made products, including sea grass, that resemble the handmade rope of the past. The entire process, from harvesting to finished product, takes about a month of consistent labor, but is spread over several months because of the drying time.

“It’s a graceful, elegant design, but with raw and spontaneous natural elements that come through,” says Baines of the final product.

At the Monterey Bay Aquarium , Yamane’s tule reed boats are actually deployed in the water during the site’s popular outdoor summer program, “Turning the Tide,” in which performers paddle Yamane’s crafts around the site’s Great Tide Pool before amazed tourists.

But when the program first began several years ago, the boats didn’t fare well after being left in the water for week after week without having a chance to dry in between use. Over time, water soaks into the boat’s interior and the moisture is unable to evaporate, leading to mold and mildew and a distorted size. The boats swelled to an estimated 750 pounds and required a small crane to lift them out of the water.

“The first boat was so heavy that the crane’s engine was overloaded and shut down,” recalls Yamane.

The second year, the aquarium asked Yamane if she could adapt the traditional design to the aquarium’s needs, and wondered if she could build the boat onto a substructure that wouldn’t absorb water. That would avoid the waterlogging problems of the first year.

They were still exploring solutions when a team member noticed some inexpensive surfboards for sale at Costco and wondered if the boards could be the answer. Yamane took a look, did some thinking, and came up with an idea that worked.

She figured out how to build a tule reed boat right onto the surfboard, which substitutes for the largest bundles that provide most of the buoyancy and weight of the boat.

“You can’t see it when the boat is in use,” she says, “but it eliminates a huge amount of plant material that would normally absorb water. It really helps.”

Linda Yamane in a tule boat

Yamane’s tule reed boat, among other Native American artifacts at the de Saisset’s new history exhibition, should also help visitors of all ages learn more about the Golden State’s imperfect past.

“I hope that the things I make will help visitors to consider and appreciate the experience of Ohlone peoples, how they lived in the past, and that we are still living and thriving here today,” says Yamane.

As for the Ohlone community itself, she believes her work “has brought knowledge and a feeling of cultural pride to at least some,” she says, “and can potentially help heal the wounds we have experienced through the traumatic events of history and the cultural loss that followed.”

Linda Yamane’s tule reed boat, along with several baskets and soap roots brushes commissioned for Santa Clara University’s de Saisset Museum, will go on permanent display as part of the museum’s renovated California history exhibition, “California Stories from Thámien to Santa Clara,” which will open in January 2020.
