In luxury yachting, few events stir as much excitement as unveiling a newly refitted superyacht. The 97-meter Carinthia VII, a icon of luxury and engineering prowess, has been redelivered from the esteemed Lürssen shipyard in Hamburg, marking a significant milestone in the yacht’s illustrious history. This transformation reaffirms Carinthia VII’s status at the pinnacle of luxury yachting and introduces her to the charter market, a move eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts and connoisseurs worldwide.

Acquired by a visionary owner in 2022, Carinthia VII’s refit was orchestrated to surpass the conventional boundaries of luxury and performance. Initially shrouded in exclusivity, with only a select few having glimpsed its interior, the yacht embarked on a comprehensive journey of rejuvenation under the guidance of the parent shipyard Lürssen.

“A refit is not just about necessary maintenance, it can also be a way to completely transform a yacht,” says Alberto Perrone, Refit Sales Director at Lürssen. “Whilst the shipyard is known globally for its many new build superyachts, the refit side of the business is just as exciting and challenging for the skilled workforce.”

Innovative Design and Luxurious Amenities

The transformation of Carinthia VII under the expert guidance of Bizzozero Cassina Architects, alongside the operational insight of RYacht Management, stands as a symbol of visionary design and architectural mastery. The duo synergized to weave a tapestry of elegance, technology, and heritage, propelling Carinthia VII into the limelight of modern luxury yachting.

The pièce de résistance of the refit is the 11-meter swimming pool installed on the main deck. This feat of design ingenuity features a striking glass front, etched with seamless precision, that dissolves the boundary between the pool and the dining area, inviting the outside in and creating an interplay of light and water. The pool’s ‘stars&stripes’ blue hue, a sophisticated blend of blue with hints of grey, casts reflections reminiscent of the ocean’s depths, creating a mesmerizing effect that is both tranquil and refreshing. This thoughtful selection complements the yacht’s new color palette and harmonizes with the natural marine surroundings.

The surrounding teak deck, renowned for its resilience and beauty, has been meticulously restored to accentuate its rich, golden-brown tones, contrasting the pool’s calm serenity. This outdoor oasis, now graced with sumptuous sun loungers and casual seating areas, has been transformed into a haven for relaxation and social interaction, underlining the yacht’s commitment to creating exquisite guest experiences.

Inside, the commitment to preserving the yacht’s soul is evident. Each room maintains at least one piece of the original furnishing, a homage to the vessel’s storied past and a celebration of its timeless craftsmanship. The iconic wooden flooring continues to echo the yacht’s decades of maritime legacy with its intricate grain patterns and satin finish. It is now polished to reveal a luster that only time can bestow.

The introduction of expansive, custom-designed lounge sofas in the main salon offers a tangible sense of comfort and luxury. These pieces are not merely functional; they are crafted to cradle and cocoon, promoting conviviality among guests. The sofas’ fabrics, selected for their tactile pleasure and visual harmony, are enhanced by bespoke carpets that sprawl elegantly beneath, their designs inspired by the fluidity and form of marine life.

The walls, adorned with hand-selected artisanal fabrics, create a canvas of texture and color that speak to a refined aesthetic. In a nod to craftsmanship, handcrafted leather tiles decorate select surfaces, their patterns laser-cut with precision to reflect the yacht’s innate connection to the sea. These tiles rise in a gradient of hues, drawing inspiration from the ocean’s depths to the sky’s expanse, further bridging the interior with the maritime world outside.

The meticulous redesign of the guest suites and owner’s deck aboard Carinthia VII marries the epitome of luxury with the pinnacle of functional design, meticulously tailored to those who will traverse the globe in her wake.

With a clear vision, the designers have curated visually stunning and superbly practical spaces, ensuring every journey is remembered for comfort as much as for the scenery.

The guest suites are a triumph of bespoke elegance, each reflecting a distinctive character while maintaining a coherent design language throughout Carinthia VII. Plush textiles and soft lighting create a serene ambiance, where every element, from the hand-stitched upholstery to the custom-designed furniture, is a silent nod to the yacht’s opulent spirit. The suites are thoughtfully equipped with state-of-the-art entertainment systems and personal climate controls, offering guests a private luxury sanctuary.

On the owner’s deck, functionality meets sophistication in the form of a teppanyaki round bar, a delightful addition that promises culinary entertainment right at the fingertips of the guests. Adjacent to this is the sundeck, which has been transformed into an al fresco paradise. Carinthia VII

Carinthia VII is one of the few yachts we have delivered twice. Built to an exterior design by Tim Heywood Design, her exterior lines are both timeless and influential. Her original palatial interiors by Fabrizio Frisardi have recently been reimaged by Bizzozero Cassina Architects, during an extensive refit completed at Lürssen in 2023. New features include a state-of-the-art gym, an 11- metre swimming pool, numerous restyling touches to both the interior and exterior, and a set of new zero speed stabilizers. The refit also brought her into class and Carinthia VII is now classified as a commercial yacht, ready for charter.

CARINTHIA VII Yacht – Epic $180M Superyacht

The 97m yacht has a value of $180 million with an exterior design by Tim Heywood.

Tim Heywood and Ellehorst Kreuter designed the interior.

Lurssen, the prestigious luxury yacht builder, delivered the completed CARINTHIA VII in 2002 from their Bremen-based shipyard in Germany.

The interior of the CARINTHIA VII yacht was designed by  Tim Heywood Design  and Ellehorst Kreuter in 2002. She has accommodation for 14 guests in 8 suites comprising one VIP cabin, and two twin/double cabins.

She is capable of carrying 37 crew members for a luxury guest experience. Not much is known about the interior of the CARINTHIA VII, except for her accommodations and that she has a beach club, amongst other luxury amenities.

She has features like an on-deck jacuzzi for guests to relax. The details of the yacht’s interior are very private.

Still, the interior is shown to be elegant and luxurious, with the exterior deck featuring plenty of spaces for sunbathing and al fresco dining. 

Tim Heywood was the designer behind the exterior of CARINTHIA VII, featuring underwater lights and a magnificent blue steel hull called “Carinthia Blue.”

It also featured a white aluminum superstructure. She was built by luxury yacht builders  Lurssen  in Germany at their Bremen shipyard.

The exterior exudes a powerful presence in the water and was delivered in 2002. She was refitted three years later in 2005.

She has a teak deck. Her exterior shows her cutting through the water with a sleek hull and superstructure.

Specifications

The 97m CARINTHIA VII has a beam of 18.8m and a draft of 4.8m. She is powered by her 4 MTU diesel engines, which gives her a maximum speed of 26 knots.

At her cruising speed of 22 knots, she has a range of 5000 nautical miles.

She has a volume of 3643 gross tons. The $180 million superyacht has an annual running cost of $10 – $15 million. She was the 12th largest superyacht in the world.

The most eye-catching changes are a 36-foot glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck aft and a 968-square-foot air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck. That space used six tons of folding glass doors to create a winter garden. It’s complemented by a large cinema screen.

Perhaps the most significant change, though, is the yacht’s conversion from private to commercial use to allow Carinthia VII to enter the charter market. “The deal was made for the boat to come to our facility on a handshake, and then we only had a couple of days to prepare between the handshake and Carinthia VII sailing up to Hamburg,” Thomas Krischkowski, head of refit and repair at Lürssen, told Robb Report .

The list of technical upgrades completed by Lürssen includes a new waterpower treatment, a full sprinkler system, 18.6 miles of cable for a new AV/IT system, new exhaust filters and fully overhauled engines and zero speed stabilizers. The yacht also had to meet new SOLAS stability requirements to be a charter vessel.

In 2002, when the Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten commissioned Project Faberge, as Carinthia VII was originally known, expectations ran high. The yacht paid homage to the fleet of Carinthia s owned and built by her late husband Helmut Horten, three of which were designed by Jon Bannenberg.

As one of only a handful of women to commission one of the largest yachts in the world, Horten called upon one of Bannenberg’s protégés, a young Tim Heywood, to pen the design.

Horten had become an overnight sensation in the art world six years before commissioning the superyacht, after she spent $22 million in a single Sotheby’s auction. Renowned for her keen eye, she ensured Carinthia VII reflected a similar level of artisanal craftsmanship.

The original curved laminated teak planking, forward of the owner’s deck and bridge deck, is described by Fraser broker Antoine X. Larricq, who managed the sale, as “haute-couture detailing.”

Other original features include the thick exterior teak decks and cross-hatched parquet floors, which remain in fantastic condition, largely because Horten only used the yacht for her annual summer cruise.

The new owner, also a keen art collector, had two strict requests for the refit: to seamlessly marry the old with the new, and for the shipyard to complete the work within 300 days, so he could enjoy the winter cruising season. He enlisted Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects to oversee the design.

The studio only had two yacht projects before this. But it had completed residential projects for the owner that brought a similar look to Carinthia VII’s 8,800-square-foot interior, including redoing all eight guest cabins.

The walls are covered in fabrics by Venetian artisans, and the central staircase is decorated with handmade, laser-cut tiles in an ombré-patterned blue that transitions from deep-ocean blue on the lower deck to pale-sky blue on the bridge deck. On each floor, the artwork in the lobby matches the color of the staircase, and classic gold elements have been replaced with a more contemporary silver.

A full exterior paint job updated the hull to Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls painted in Shark Grey. Following a few minor tweaks at the shipyard, Carinthia VII will soon cross the Atlantic to make its charter debut in the Caribbean.

New Horizons for CARINTHIA VII: From Private Superyacht to Luxury Charter Yacht

Renaming a vessel is often seen as a misfortune, yet in the world of luxurious superyachts, it's an easy way to identify a change in ownership. However, this doesn't hold true for charter yacht CARINTHIA VII . This motor yacht 's legacy is so deeply rooted that to call it anything else would be a sacrilege.

After two decades of singular ownership and just 4,000 original engine hours, the infamously private 97.2m (318ft) superyacht was purchased by a new owner in 2022. She then went through a swift 300-day transformation by the German shipyard Lürssen , and subsequently became the star of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show . Despite retaining its original name, CARINTHIA VII emerged as a dramatically different yacht and an exciting addition to the official listing of yacht rentals .

Many changes have taken place for CARINTHIA VII, like the sundeck which has been revamped to cater to charter clientele, with a barbecue, wet bar, and lounging area. The original glossy wood-paneled ceilings were painted white, and the sea-level wellness area includes a hammam, treatment room, and beauty salon. A foldable balcony brings charter guests closer to the water.

Adorned with fabrics crafted by Venetian artisans, interiors transition from a deep ocean blue on the lower deck to a pale sky blue on the bridge deck.

The most striking modifications are a 36-foot glass-encased swimming pool on the main deck aft and a 968-square-foot air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck, enclosed by six tons of foldable glass doors, creating a winter garden. The area is further enhanced by a sizable cinema screen.

Lürssen also implemented a series of technical upgrades including a new water power treatment, a comprehensive sprinkler system, 18.6 miles of cable for a fresh AV/IT system, new exhaust filters, and completely refurbished engines and zero-speed stabilizers. The yacht also had to comply with new SOLAS stability requirements to qualify as a luxury crewed charter yacht .

In 2002, when Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten commissioned Project Faberge, as CARINTHIA VII was formerly known, anticipation was high. The yacht was a tribute to her late husband Helmut Horten's fleet of Carinthias, three of which were designed by Jon Bannenberg.

Engaging one of Bannenberg's protégés, a young Tim Heywood, for the design, Heidi Horten instantly knew she wanted something similar to Heywood's designs for the 115m (377ft) superyacht PELORUS for CARINTHIA VII. Thus, Heywood had to design a vessel that embodied the spirit and meticulous attention to detail of PELORUS, but with a unique identity suitable for indulgent Caribbean yacht charters .

The new owner of CARINTHIA VII is an art enthusiast, like her previous owner, and specifically made two primary requests for the renovation: to blend the old and new seamlessly, and for the shipyard to complete the work within 300 days to enjoy the winter cruising season around St Barts , Antigua , and other areas around the Caribbean. Italian firm Bizzozero Cassina Architects was tasked with overseeing the design.

The firm, which had previously completed only two yacht projects, brought a similar aesthetic to CARINTHIA VII's 8,800-square-foot interior, including revamping all eight guest cabins, drawing from their experience on residential projects for the owner.

The walls are adorned with fabrics crafted by Venetian artisans, and the central staircase is embellished with handmade, laser-cut tiles in an ombré pattern, transitioning from deep ocean blue on the lower deck to a pale sky blue on the bridge deck. Each floor's lobby artwork matches the staircase's color, and traditional gold elements have been substituted with a more modern silver.

Externally, the hull was repainted in Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the deck walls in Shark Grey. Following minor adjustments at the shipyard, CARINTHIA VII is set to make its charter debut in the Caribbean.

First look inside 97m Lürssen Carinthia VII following 10-month refit

Following a comprehensive 300-day refit at Blohm + Voss , the 97.2-metre Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VII has debuted her new look at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023. 

Lürssen teamed up with the yacht's central agent for charter, Fraser , to present the yacht alongside original exterior designer Tim Heywood and the team who spearheaded the refit, Bizzozero Cassina Architects. Key alterations include the addition of a slender 11-metre pool on the aft deck and a brand new 85-square-metre gym on the bridge deck, which is half-encased by six tonnes of sliding glass panels that can be completely removed when required. 

Carinthia VII also underwent a huge number of technical modifications to convert her use from private to commercial. "This is a very complex job which requires the review of regulations and many negotiations with the class to navigate safely through the sea of rules,” explained Alberto Perrone da Zara, Lürssen's refit sales director. 

The interior was modified dramatically during the refit to give the yacht a fresher look and feel. However, the yacht had been maintained well throughout her life and the new owner decided to keep a single piece of original furniture in each room. The unique wooden floors have also been kept in some areas, as has the carpet on the stairs. Botticino marbles with integrated heating, reclaimed wood from an old monastery, delicate leather wall panelling and a refined art collection were all brought on board during the refit. 

All of the guest cabins were upgraded during the refit with the charter market in mind. The master suite kept the same wooden cabinetry and retro dressing room, but has been given a brand new en suite with a freestanding tub that looks out over the ocean. On the aft of the owner's deck, a teppanyaki round bar has also been installed. 

Meanwhile, the other cabins had their distinctive doors "raised" to meet commercial licensing requirements. Delivered in 2002, Carinthia VII has smaller cabins than a modern-day yacht, but Perrone da Zara pointed out that the windows are full-height, which is "incredible for 2022" and "it's uncomfy and impersonal to sleep in huge cabins". 

Elsewhere, the walls wrapping around the staircase were relaid with laser-cut oblongs of leather, which gradually change from dark blue to sky blue as the staircase ascends. Delicate marquetry throughout the yacht was carefully repainted while in situ and Venetian fabrics have been brought in to reupholster any soft furnishings which required an upgrade.

Aside from the pool and the bridge deck gym, the biggest al fresco change is the sundeck, which benefits from a new dining arrangement for 14, a cocktail bar and another bar with in-built barbecue. There are helm seats on the forward part of this deck, where guests on a yacht charter can take in Carinthia VII 's 25-knot top speed and look out over a mini golf green on the bow. 

The iconic yacht also shed her signature Carinthia blue exterior shade. Her hull was repainted in Majestic Blue, her superstructure was painted in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls were given a new coat of Shark Grey.

Peter Lürssen said: “I am very proud that, after building Carinthia VII, we have now been able to participate in her new lease on life with an extensive refit. She remains a very particular vessel and is a testament to the solidity of our German engineering and manufacturing."

The yacht changed hands in September last year, with a last known asking price of €95,000,000. The deal was handled between Antoine Larricq and Stuart Larsen at Fraser and Ralph de Joode at RYacht.
