Built by the renowned Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi, this 56-meter vessel was first launched in 2008 under the name Salute. The name itself, translating to “health” in Italian, seemed to promise a voyage of luxury and well-being. However, what truly set this yacht apart was not just its name, but its sheer opulence, advanced design, and the remarkable story it carried.

The Birth of Bayesian: An Engineering Marvel

Originally costing an estimated £14 million, the Bayesian yacht was a testament to the pinnacle of yacht design and craftsmanship. Perini Navi, one of the world’s leading yacht makers, crafted this vessel with a focus on both performance and luxury. Under the expert design of yacht architect Ron Holland, the Bayesian boasted the world’s tallest aluminum mast, standing over 72 meters above the deck. This engineering feat allowed the yacht to carry nearly 3,000 square meters of sail, making it a sight to behold on the open seas.

The yacht’s towering mast was not just for show; it was a technical challenge that required innovative solutions to ensure stability and safety. A former captain of the Bayesian highlighted the achievement of taming this massive structure, ensuring that it behaved dynamically during both sailing and motoring. This balance between design and function made the Bayesian a unique vessel in the world of superyachts.

A Floating Palace: The Luxurious Interiors

The interiors of the Bayesian yacht were designed by the acclaimed Rémi Tessier, a name synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Tessier, who has also designed suites for Claridge’s hotel in London and yachts for Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, infused the Bayesian with a sense of pure and natural elegance. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design principles, Tessier utilized whitened sycamore and teak surfaces in the communal areas, creating a serene and calming environment for guests.

In the private cabins, materials such as stainless steel, ebony, and leather were carefully chosen to create a luxurious yet familiar atmosphere. The yacht could comfortably accommodate up to twelve guests in six beautifully appointed cabins, each attended by a staff of ten, dedicated to catering to every whim of the guests. The design emphasized outdoor living, with ample spaces for al fresco entertaining and relaxing on deck.

The Ultimate Playground: Onboard Amenities and Water Toys

For those fortunate enough to embark on a journey aboard the Bayesian, the yacht offered a plethora of amenities designed for both relaxation and adventure. The lower deck was divided into three distinct sections: crew accommodation towards the bow, guest staterooms in the middle, and the owner’s cabin at the aft. This layout ensured that guests enjoyed privacy and comfort throughout their stay.

The real fun, however, was found at the aft of the yacht, where a garage housed a collection of water toys and crafts. From jet skis and wakeboards to sea kayaks and banana boats, the Bayesian was equipped to offer endless entertainment on the water. A tender was also available to transport guests to secluded bays and ports, allowing them to explore the surrounding areas in style.

A Tragic End: The Sinking of the Bayesian

Despite its luxurious beginnings, the story of the Bayesian yacht took a tragic turn. In 2020, the yacht was refitted and no longer listed for private hire. By this time, it had been renamed Bayesian, a name that would become synonymous with one of the most harrowing maritime incidents in recent history.

In August 2024, during a celebratory voyage off the coast of Sicily, the Bayesian was caught in a sudden and severe storm. High winds, reportedly reaching up to 200km/h, battered the yacht, causing the massive aluminum mast to topple over the side. The force of the wind and the weight of the mast pushed the yacht beyond its down-flooding angle, causing seawater to flood the deck. Within minutes, the Bayesian capsized and sank.

A nearby vessel, the Sir Robert BP, witnessed the tragedy unfold. The crew of the Sir Robert BP reported seeing the Bayesian go flat on the water before disappearing beneath the waves. Despite their efforts to help, only 15 people were rescued from the sinking yacht, including a one-year-old baby who was heroically saved by her mother, Charlotte Golunski.

The Aftermath: A Somber Legacy

The sinking of the Bayesian yacht left a profound impact on the yachting community and beyond. Among those feared dead were tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, who were aboard the yacht celebrating Lynch’s recent legal victory in the United States. The tragedy underscored the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of the sea, even for vessels as advanced and well-crafted as the Bayesian.

The wreckage of the Bayesian was eventually discovered by divers, but the loss of life and the yacht itself marked a somber end to what was once a symbol of luxury and achievement. The images of the yacht, once proudly displayed in the homes of its owner, now serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of nature.

Arrive in Angra dos Reis via charter flight or helicopter from Rio de Janeiro, and head to Marina Verolme to meet your yacht and crew. Cruising along coast from Angra to Paraty, you’ll have your choice of anchorages, each one more beautiful than the next. Explore the landlocked cove of Saco do Céu, find a spot to anchor, and then head ashore for a forested hike and a swim under a waterfall. Continue to the enchanting city of Paraty, where you’ll find art galleries, famous restaurants, jazz clubs, and several bars with lively samba dancing.

Ilha da Cotia

Take a quick jaunt to Praia Grande for sunbathing on its stunning sandy beach, kayaking in the gorgeous waters, or simply strolling along the coast. Set out for Saco do Mamanguá, home to Brazil’s only fjord, with majestic towering rock walls jutting into the lush rainforest, and then continue to Ilha da Cotia to find a secluded anchorage and take in the panorama around you.

Ilha de Paquetá

Brightly adorned horse-drawn carriages are the only “vehicles” you’ll see, as no cars are permitted in this quaint, leisurely village. For a chance of pace, dine at Chez Dominique, serving up the best French food in the region.

As you make way back toward Ilha Grande, stop off at one of the many islands in the Baía da Ribeira, an idyllic spot to swim or splash around with the yacht’s water toys. Anchor out near Araçatiba, known for its abundant fishing and reflective aquamarine waters that may turn phosphorescent at night.

If weather conditions are favorable, take a counterclockwise turn towards Aventureiro, a rugged bay surrounded by tumbled boulders forming serene pools. Continue to Parnaioca, a nature-lover’s paradise, where a flowing river finds its way down to the unspoiled beach. Cruise around to the tip of Ilha Grande to Palmas and find a serene anchorage, enjoy a cocktail on deck, and take in the beautiful views.

Angra dos Reis

After navigating through this beautiful oasis of more than 300 islands, return to Angra for your ride to São Paulo for some last-minute shopping and dining. Or head to Rio de Janeiro to take in landmarks, such as the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. However you choose to end your journey, it will surely be the perfect finale.

The weather in the Guanabara Bay area is usually warmest from November to April with highs of 86°F (°C) to 90°F (°C) and lows of 73°F (23°C) to 75°F (24°C). The weather from May to October is coolest with highs of 80°F (27°C) to 84°F(29°C) and lows of 63°F (17°C).

43.5m Heesen motor yacht Brazil relaunched following refit

The 40.23 metre Heesen motor yacht Brazil has been relaunched at a new length of 43.5 metres, following an extensive refit courtesy of a collaboration between three Dutch firms – Snijders Yachts, Zwijnenburg and Dutchflows.

The work has included a four metre stern extension to the swimming platform to create a new 36 square metre beach club. This area also now serves as a storage area for the yacht’s tender and toys, which can be launched via an extendable platform.

“We were approached by the client to upgrade his yacht and to create a beach club to be more in touch with the sea,” explained Olav Snijders, founder of Snijders Yachts. “Therefore we started thinking of possible stern extensions, which lead to the final design and also included lengthening bridge-deck to keep a sleek overall profile of the yacht.”

The bridge-deck underwent a 1.5 metre extension and the was also decluttered to “maximise usable space”. The removal of the tender and jetski cradles and cranes has created room for a dining area for 10 guests as well as space for a sunbathing area with six berths. 

Alongside the changes to the outdoor living spaces the yacht also underwent a major technical overhaul, including replacing two generators in order to power new CMC zero-speed stabilisers.

Brazil was delivered by Heesen in 1993 to a design by the late Gerhard Gilgenast . As well as her most recent refit Brazil  has undergone several upgrades since her delivery, including her 20-year ABS hull and machinery special survey.

A bedroom, convertible living room, kitchenette, dry bathroom, and that was almost it. Most of the interior was paneled with wood and the exterior was done in aluminum for durability. Now, with the likes of Living Vehicle, a Santa Barbara, CA-based boutique travel trailer builder – that has been marrying luxury and sustainability over the years – is redefining the word: luxury mobile living with the new GT series. Electric trailers by Living Vehicle have been close competitors to the Airstreams. These models are designed to sell a way of life that in Living Vehicle’s ideology is “sustainable, off-grid, and luxurious.” The company has ventured into a new category with the GT series fifth wheelers. These models: the flagship GT39 and the smaller-sized GT32, combine off-grid fierceness with luxury that matches the feel of a yacht on land. Designer: Living Vehicle Living Vehicle has always focused on developing off-grid mobile trailers that can be used for full-time living, the Cyber Trailer for instance. The GT39 may be a different unit in approach, but its fundamentals are aligned with the company’s signature style. The fifth wheeler measures 39-foot long and features an architecturally designed interior. It fits the master bedroom – with a king-size bed and panoramic windows – in the gooseneck and is apt for sleeping four to six people with a living room that transforms into a guest sleeper. The Living Vehicle GT39 model tips the scale at 16000 lbs but has, and we cannot iterate enough, a motor yacht-style luxurious interior comprising 8-foot ceilings, hardwood flooring, powder-coated aluminum cabinets, and top-of-the-line appliances. The living room with reclining seats has a 70-inch home theater system and fireplace, just adjacent is a chef’s kitchen attached to a bar that doubles as a workspace. Next up with the bathroom with a composting toilet and a teak-paneled shower. Stretching the interior luxury into the exterior landscapes is the fold-down deck of the GT39, which is spacious enough to be used as an outdoor dining space or an outdoor kitchen at the campsite. The fold-down deck is covered with a folding awning. The interesting element of this yacht for the road is the option of installing anywhere between 2.2 and 5 kilowatts of solar panels on the roof. Stretching the entire length and breadth of the LV model, the solar cells can extend onto the awnings for additional coverage. To enhance the self-sustaining capability, this fifth-wheeler’s solar system is supported by a hybrid backup power generator and complemented by a battery pack of 72kWh. Since the GT39 is meant for permanent, long-term living on the road, it comes with four-season climate control, along with smart home technology, and Starlink connectivity. Living Vehicle is now taking orders for the new GT39, but the pricing for the model is undisclosed. If interested, you would have to get in touch with the company for a quote.
