The course & Location

Achieve your RYA Yachtmaster in the warm and challenging tidal waters of Gibraltar, Spain and Portugal with mild winters, reliable winds and often clear blue skies in December.

From our base in the Ocean Village Resort Gibraltar you will sail as far north west as Lisbon, and as far east as Ibiza, and everything between. Your course is designed to be challenging, engaging and enjoyable.

Situated less than 75m from the yachts, the shore side facilities offer dedicated training rooms including radio,  Radar simulators, and 3 x full size marine diesel training engines.

In order to maintain standards we provide the facilities, and hold both the RYA and MCA maritime accreditations in house so we can deliver every element of your course without outsourcing.

Leisure and Commercial Options

There are numerous reasons to achieve your Yachtmaster Offshore so whatever your goals, we have a course for you.

For some the Yachtmaster qualification is purely for personal use and in this case the 'leisure' only version is all that is required.

However, if you would like to work as a professional yacht captan commercially in the yachting industry you will need the Professional version including the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency approved STCW Basic Safety Training package, and more. 

In all cases, whatever version you choose, as we are both UK RYA and UK MCA approved we can provide all the  training you will need in house.

p to 3 weeks extra free additional training is available at no extra cost should it be needed. Most of our Yachtmasters achieve the required level in 90 days, however if you need longer. the team here is there for you, and there is no extra charge for the additional weeks. Finding Work as a Yachtmaster Offshore

A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence will enable you to work as the Captain of commercial vessels of up to 200 Gross Ton, and crew on any vessel of any size. 

Fees also include food and accommodation for the 90 days.

Beginner courses to professional Yachtmaster

Official RYA Training Centre

Gib Sailing School are based in the new Alcaidesa Marina Spain situated just outside the border to Gibraltar, with good parking, pontoons for easy boarding with ample room to practice med and pontoon moorings. Just short walk away from Gibraltar and just over one hour drive from Malaga and Jerez airport, providing a range of tidal sailing courses to cater for all levels from your first time sailing to Yachtmaster.

Courses take place in and around the Gibraltar Strait where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. The area enjoys plenty of sunshine and good winds, sailing to different marinas, discovering interesting and challenging cruising grounds, most weeks we see dolphins and sometimes whales.

Our aim is provide hands on practical approach to sailing, navigation and boat maintenance on a well organised and maintained fully equipped sail training yacht to ensure that all sailors attending a Gib Sailing School course have a memorable and enjoyable sailing experience combined with high quality instruction to suit each individual.

An experienced Yachtmaster Ocean instructor will lead each course. Whether sailing for pleasure or for a future career, Gib Sailing School will ensure your progression and tailor teaching to suit your individual needs.

Jeff - School Principal & Chief Instructor

Jeff Nunn, originally from the United Kingdom, comes from a teaching background and has been sailing since the early 90’s. Jeff holds a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor's certificate and is an RYA Diesel Engine Instructor. He also possesses a Level 2 Kitesurfing Instructor's licence. Jeff has owned and cruised on many different types of boats as well as solo sailing. As a successful engineer in the marine industry Jeff brings a wide and varied background to his role as an instructor.   Jeff takes pride in adapting to students in the way that they learn and at a pace that suits them learning in a safe relaxed manner that encourages confidence. Whether you're wanting a career in sailing or own your own boat and want to do Ocean passages. On our courses we not only cover all the RYA courses but also have the experience to cover all aspects of sailing, from boat maintenance to storm tactics.

RYA Yachtmaster Exam Preparation Options.

The standard 4 day Yachtmaster Exam preparation course is a great way for experienced and competent skippers to familiarise themselves with the vessel and surrounding areas. It is important to note that boat handling skills, and theoretical knowledge for the standard exam preparation course (option 1)  must already be at Yachtmaster level, if your skills need work then consider one of the extended prep packages below.

Option 1: Standard Prep

Yachtmaster Offshore or Coastal Preparation with exam. Previous experience required for Yachtmaster Offshore as per the RYA Offshore Requirements . Or for Yachtmaster Coastal as per the RYA Coastal Requirements .

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Course is an advanced Skippers course for yachtsmen and women who have considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation.

The aim of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Courses is to build on your Day Skipper skills and to give you the confidence and ability to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

It is typical for a sailor having done the Day Skipper Practical to gain more experience, either with us on mile builders along the Mediterranean or Atlantic coast and then do the Yachtmaster Coastal Shorebased course followed by the Yachtmaster Coastal Practical Course.

THE RYA YACHTMASTER COASTAL SKIPPER COURSE WILL COVER:

• Passage planning and preparation for sea .

For those wishing to work in the sailing industry, there is an optional exam with an RYA examiner. Successful candidates will receive an RYA / MCA Certificate of Competence which is recognised worldwide. You will also need to have completed the VHF and First Aid course, which we can organise for you and have a minimum of 800 sea mile (at least 400 tidal) and 3 x 60 mile passages. Whilst our Principal Jim Field is an examiner, it will be an independent RYA examiner that tests you.

RYA Coastal Skipper Sailing Courses in Gibraltar and Spain with ROCK

This 5-day course is for the more advanced sailor who has completed the shore based Coastal Yachtmaster course and has considerable knowledge of practical sailing and navigation.

By now you will be taking charge of the yacht and her crew on longer passages and will be well versed in safe navigation. Now you will learn to use more advanced navigational techniques and learn to take command of the yacht under more challenging situations.

RYA Coastal Skipper Sailing Course Itinerary

Meet and Greet Upon arrival at Ocean Village marina at around 5pm on Sunday evening, your Instructor for the week will introduce you to the yacht you will be sailing and your home for the duration of the course. You will be given a basic safety brief and then everyone is free to settle in and get to know your fellow crew members. Decide among yourself what time you want to have dinner and we will book you in to a local restaurant.

Day 1 Wake up to the sunshine and, after a continental breakfast onboard, we begin at around 0930 with a full safety brief. As a Coastal Skipper, you will already have familiarised yourself with the location of the safety equipment and may be asked to do part of the briefing. We leave the berth later in the morning with one of our Coastal  Skipper students taking the yacht out under the watchful eye of the Instructor.  Hoist the mainsail, unfurl the headsail and practice some sailing manoeuvres in the Bay of Gibraltar. You sailing exercises will be of an advanced level – man overboard under power and sail, anchoring under sail, close quarter moorings and simulated engine failures.  You will have time on helm and also on winches and main sheet.  After a busy morning lunch will be on board, usually at anchor.

After lunch, more sailing exercises like tacking, gybing and heaving to.  Finish is usually around 1800 on day one.

The evening is spent back in Ocean Village marina where you will have some free time to explore Gibraltar, soak up the sun and enjoy the local culture. We have many recommendations for dinner in the old town or around the marina.

Day 2 After breakfast today, someone will act as “Skipper of the Day” and will plan a passage to another port in ether in Spain or Morocco. As a Coastal Skipper you will be responsible for all the pre departure checks, crew briefings and pilotage out of the marina. You will be calculating the tides and preparing a pilotage into the next port under the guidance of your Instructor. Morning will be spent on mooring up practice and some more exercises before setting off on the passage in the afternoon or you may decide to set off for a distance early with the best tide.  The finishing time may be later than day one depending upon the destination. Upon arrival in the evening you will have time to explore the local area but the emphasis this week will be on longer distance navigation as opposed to getting in early, so less leisure time and more sailing time.

Day 3 and 4 These two days are much the same as day 2 with overnight stops at other ports. You may find yourself in Morocco or anywhere along the Costa del Sol. There will be time in the morning or afternoon to do some mooring up practice.  The focus during the  course is on safely taking your yacht and crew from one place to another and to enjoy the voyage. We believe that you learn best when you are having fun so that is our promise to you. One evening you will do a night sail which will allow you to discover the many navigational lights on ships and on land.

Day 5 Today you will be returning to our home port of Ocean Village, Gibraltar. Depending on where the third passage took us, we will spend the day either on passage or in the Bay putting the final touches to your new skills. Once back in the berth, everyone gets involved in securing the yacht, switching the instruments off, tidying the chart table and hosing the deck down. Your Instructor will sign logbooks and award certificates as appropriate. The course will be finished by 1700 hrs.

RYA Coastal Skipper Course . If you’re thinking of a career in sailing or upskilling yourself, this is the step towards RYA Yachtmaster. This course is delivered at our  Barcelona Palamos Base at Club Nautic Costa Brava Marina Spain. You can take RYA MCA Examinations such as RYA Yachtmaster Coastal for commercial use in a non-tidal area providing you have sufficient tidal miles leading to tidal certification, at least 300. Our Tidal Commercial miles are delivered from our Gibraltar Base.

You will need 300 sea miles on cruising yachts, and coastal skipper/yachtmaster theory. This is an advanced course and includes night navigation, yacht handling under sail, anchoring under power and sail and much more. On completion you will be able to complete inshore and offshore passages by day and night. This qualification can be MCA-endorsed for commercial use.

Theory (residential) RYA Coastal Skipper Theory and Practical Combined Course 11 Days

You will need to have a sound understanding of the theory before undertaking the practical course. If not, you can do the two-week combination course 5 days practical 6 days theory including Exams 11 days in total, or study in one of our classrooms for 5 days plus Exam day. You do not need to hold a certificate in the theory to attend the practical course, but you may find it a very tough challenge.

RYA COASTAL SKIPPER PRACTICAL COURSES START EVERY MONDAY BOARD ON SUNDAYS

Accommodation is provided on board for the duration we use Beneteau and Bavaria 47 foot Yachts.

The BOS RYA 5 Day Coastal Skipper Course costs £795 or €855 and is fully inclusive of accommodation, half board (breakfasts and lunches) plus beverages on board, fuel, moorings, bedding, RYA Instruction, RYA Course Completion Certificates, wet gear and all safety equipment. Our yachts have an Instructor pupil ratio of 1 - 5 maximum for RYA Courses.

Barcelona Base is Palamos to the north of the City  includes sailing in The Bay Of Rosas in the lee of the French Pyrennees, visiting Cadaques, Estartit, Rosas, Palamos, Port D'Aro, Barcelona Port Olympic all weather dependent obviously. Nearest airports to our base Barcelona - Girona or Barcelona El Prat.

You will be sailing on modern British and Spanish Flagged MCA and RYA Inspected Coded Yachts. We have a range of yachts available up to our Beneteau 473 for mile building and performance sailing. Our fleet of Beneteau and Jeanneau Yachts all benefit from fully battened mainsails for extra performance. 

Additional weeks are as the above tariff and if students stay for two weeks they can stay on board our yachts over the weekend in the fully inclusive tariff, so nothing else to pay.

We are a fully Recognised RYA Tidal Training Centre and our company Blue Oyster Limited is incorporated in Gibraltar for your financial peace of mind. RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Conversion

Convert your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail to Motor with Motor Boat Fast Track based in Gibraltar. In this course, we cover the necessary 1250 nautical miles required for the conversion of your RYA Yachtmaster Sail certificate of competence. 

Pre-course experience / requirements

It is essential that you have covered a minimum of 25 days at sea with over 1,250 Nautical Miles covered. You should have completed 3 passages that are at least 60 miles. A minimum of 3 days of experience as a skipper including 1 overnight passage.

Candidates will be trained and then tested to demonstrate knowledge & competence in the following; International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, Safety, Boat Handling, General Seamanship including maintenance, responsibilities of a Skipper, Navigation, Meteorology & Signals.
