Petrel 33: widen your horizons

Petrel 33 is the logical evolution of her smaller sister petrel 28 , with the task to expand the horizons of cruising activity for a 4-6 person crew, raising the bar of onboard comfort, keeping the boat size under the critical (for a homebuilder) size of 34 foot – 10 meters of overall length., a “new classic” looking cruiser, sturdy, with no frills and weird solutions, ready to let you sail with a decent speed and a very good comfort level both at anchor and sailing., the starting point is the very good sailing capabilities shown by the petrel 28, so i decided to develope this hull into a enlarged design, keeping a quite narrow hull for actual standard, prolonging the bow lines for a plumb stempost; i expect to have a similar behaviour of the proven 28footer, with a tender weather helm in every situation, a very soft and gentle wave riding attitude in a seaway, and a good acceleration coming out of the tacks, i expect a little bit more speed given the longer water length ; section are moderately full at the bow, maximum beam is around 60% of hull lenght , transom sections keep a moderate vee.

Stability calculations give us good parameters (see stability curve attached) , with a real large positive area stability, a 123° AVS (Angle of Vanishing Stability) with loaded boat, and a minimal negative area in the stability curves.

Rig and sailplan:

Sailplan is based on a 50% area split among mainsail and a furling jib ; we kept the upwind sailing area to a moderate value, avoiding “wannabe racers” temptations; a decent sized gennaker can be hoisted on the fixed bowsprit, an obvious choice given the fact that the new generation furlers are making this sails very easy to manage for cruising crews too, adding the pleasure of sailing downwind in light airs at a decent pace, a weather situation which is quite a pain in normal mainsail + jib configurations ; in roughest situation you can hoist a storm jib on a removable internal stay fitted on a high load chainplate leaning on the forward structural bulkhead ; rig is a classical 2 spreaders mast , spreaders are 15° swept, there is a structural backstay and no structural runners, lower shrouds are doubled., deck gear configuration features classical sturdy and manageable solutions, without too many frills : 4 self tailing winches to pull sheets, halyards and control lines, 2 stoppers array on cabin top panel, 2 tracks for jib cars, so that the jib can keep a decent shape even furled, a small track for the mainsail purchase, all the control lines are led to cockpit to avoid bow walks in “spicy” situations (plans will detail how to make bombproof fitting points for lifelines too);, boat will be powered by a diesel (20-30 hp) or electric (7 kw) inboard engine fitted with a saildrive or shaft-line transmission ; this will allow to keep a decent pace while motoring in zero wind situation, or to add a good booster to sail thrust if needed; i expect to reach a 6.5 knots boat speed at 2000 rpm with a 30 hp diesel engine., rudder and steering system:, rudder is a single blade semi-compensated one with tiller steering system ; there will be two options detailed on plans: spade rudder with ss steel shaft (this solution is depicted in rendered images), and an easier to build transom hung rudder., finkeel is naca profile keel made of welded steel plates, ; ballast is made by lead poured in the keel hollows ; keel is fitted on the hull with a web of bolts on solid hardwood floors, with nuts and high thickness ss steel counterplates under the cabin floorings; keel load is carefully distributed to avoid any local high stress area., interiors and on board living:, this area marks the main differences among this 34 footer and her smaller sister; higher hull topsides and two more meters of boat make a world of difference in terms of interiors and on board comfort; we have 6 regular berths, a comfortable galley and dinette area, a decent volume for on board systems and storage, all that you need to medium-long range sailing given the size of the boat ; both forward and after cabin are closed with a small door to gain a little bit more privacy ; cabin height is around 191 cm , cockpit is quite wide, and it’s designed to be comfortable for a crew of 6 while sailing with the heeled boat too ; transom area is protected by a sturdy wooden hinged structure that can be lowered when moored to be used as a transom platform. low sleek coamings protect the forward area of the cockpit , making the primary winch basement too; toerails and good sized areas among cabin flanks and hull sheerline make going to the bow a very safe operation even when boat is heeled and in rough conditions;, building system:, given the good amount of miles sailed by petrel 28  in every sea state with very good reliability, i keep a similar structure for this project, upgrading the scantlings to cope with higher stresses; so the boat structure is a grid of plywood bulkheads and frames linked by solid wood stringers and a mixed plywood-solid wood structure forming keel backbone and stempost ; hull planking is made by 12 mm plywood, with the radiused area made by two layers of 6 mm plywood panels , all glued to the underlying structural grid , in a reliable , sturdy and easy to build system called “radius chine” ; cabin , cockpit and deck surfaces are made by 10-12 mm plywood panels stiffened by a grid of secondary stringers, solid beams and other structural elements; the hull bottom is further stiffened by a number of solid wood floors , tightly spaced in the centerboat area, where they bear the finkeel loads. all critical areas and structural bondings are strengthened and stiffened by epoxy resin laminated glass fabric and epoxy resin liquid joinery and structural bondings. this building system is definitely suited to be realized by home builders or small boatyards, with a basic level of wood craftmanship , in a decent amount of time given the size of the boat., in my view this will allow a small boatyard to build and offer a highly customized top level sailboat keeping the final prize to a reasonable level, which is basically the main concern when it comes to manage a small boatyard..

As you have likely already done so, the math between building your own boat and buying one may be a huge difference. Likewise, you may even enjoy the challenge of taking an older boat that is gutted and restoring with parts from a kit to build one new again.

But how much does it cost exactly to build a boat from the comfort of your own garage or workshop? The prices are going to vary dramatically depending on your situation and material needed to get the job done. In addition, the time that it takes to complete this will also vary.

Sail plans are rather inexpensive if you are aiming to build a small boat. These plans allow you to see the workings of the boat design and what you need to build the boat.

Without these plans, you will not know the exact details of the design and it can cause major issues with the boat’s hull or other areas of the boat. Think of these as the backbone or instructions of the boat’s infancy before being built.

Price Per Square Foot

You should assume to pay anywhere between $300 to $600 per square foot if you are interested in building a boat. Buying a kit outright can be a good way to save time, but oftentimes these do not come with everything you need.

Instead, you should try to source as much of the materials at the best price as possible. Thinking ahead is part of the process and you might be able to score a deal at a lumber yard or hardware store for parts.

Boat Designs Matter

The design of the boat will be much different from one boat to the next, regardless if they are the same size in length. If you are pondering boats that range anywhere between 16 and 20 feet, you should factor in the shape of the hull, any rigging, and various appendages.

Prices tend to increase when there are more complexities within the designs. If you are considering a kit with more details than others, you will also have to pay more for the designs on that as well.

Kits Can Differ

It is important to understand that all kits are not going to be the same. As you gander at sailboat kits online to stitch together, you need to thoroughly look over to see if you have everything you need before buying.

It would also be at your advantage to ask the seller if any additional parts or supplies are needed. This may change your dynamic on the kit buying process and you may pass up one for another if it has everything you need. An all-inclusive kit may cost several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars more to have the convenience of everything in the bundle.

Construction Approaches

Some boat plans may require you to have certain tools to get the job done. This means special saws or planers, which the average person simply does not have.

Purchasing specialty tools might be expensive upfront and hard to find depending on what it is. Your best bet would be to check locally for others trying to sell their tools or consider a boat plan that does not require extensive tools to finish the job.

How Long Does it Take to Build a Sailboat?

An easy to build sailboat could take a while to build from scratch. Many different variances come into play that are difficult to pinpoint for everyone. But how long is that exactly and how will your experience play into this?

A fun project to sail in the wind could take you several months to well over a year depending on the boat plan and how big your boat is going to be. In addition, the materials all need to be accounted for prior to starting in the event a hardware store does not have them in stock.

Time Varies

The time that passes for simple boat designs on small sailing vessels can be done in a few weeks. This is assuming you have everything you need and work non-stop around the clock.

Certain complex situations may make the process long, such as the difficulty of working with some materials. If you are a skilled laborer, it may take you half the time compared to a novice. The amount of time it can take will vary on your availability and skill level.

Planning ahead will undoubtedly offer the most time-saving features. It also helps if you can tackle parts of the project at your own pace.

Complexity of Design

The design of the boat may make the construction process longer. For example, it may take you longer to build a catamaran compared to a similar lengthed monohull.

More complex designs might require more materials, therefore making the process a bit longer to complete. Furthermore, you will also need more experience working with difficult designs and that will affect you more as a newbie.

Be sure to manage your expectations well and do not allow yourself to become too stressed over this fun project. If you can, seek expert boat building advice from a local builder or the company you purchased sail plans through.

Quality Materials

The quality of the materials will matter significantly when building a boat and will greatly affect the time it takes to construct it. Handling fiberglass or carbon fiber might require specialty tools, while wood also demands a certain level of craftsmanship.

If you are not skilled at working with the material at hand, it might affect the quality of the build and you may have to go back to fix mistakes. This will definitely add more time to your project, because mistakes are bound to happen with your first project.

To save time, consider adding the tools and materials throughout the year or as often as your budget allows. You may want to try testing your skills on fiberglass or other materials to get a feel for how to work with it.

This section of Bruce Roberts sailboat designs and boat plans cover the following vessels in the range of 18 to 30 foot. The Roberts, Adventurer, Tom Thumb, and Canoe Stern. Boat building plans using steel, aluminium, fiberglass wood/epoxy, depending on the design, are available. Information and prices are on each individual design page.

Study Plan Packages contain all the sheets #1 from the actual plans. Sail Plans and the various accommodation layouts pertaining to the design are shown on these sheets. There may be anywhere from two to eight #1 sheets which are all to scale and which measure between one meter and two and a half meters long each. They are intended as a more in-depth overview of the design in which you are interested.

Material Lists for the basic materials required to build the hull, deck and superstructure are included in the study plan package to help you with your budgeting. Where Fibreglass is mentioned as a material this means Balsa sandwich / Foam sandwich, Single skin or C-Flex. Most steel plans can be adapted to aluminium construction. Both moulded ply and strip plank can be used in conjunction with the wood epoxy saturation method. Sail and rig details are also shown on the study plan sets.

As the Study Plan Packages include the basic measurements in scale for the accommodation layouts, you can customize the layouts to suit your needs if what is presented is not exactly to your liking.

Improve Your Catalina 30: Upgrading the World’s Most Popular 30-Footer

The Catalina 30 is a remarkable success story. We suspect that more Catalina 30s have been built than any other boat of that size anywhere in the world. While the basic boat has remained unchanged since it was introduced in 1975, there have been dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of minor developments in the boat in the course of a produc­tion run that is approaching 4,000 hulls.

The advantage of a boat in production for so long is a high degree of product refinement over the years. The challenge for the owner of an early version of the boat is to upgrade his boat to the standards of models currently in production.

In the case of the Catalina 30, a number of bulletins have been published by the builder over the years, detail­ing improvements to the boat. In addition, there is an ac­tive owners’ association, and many individual owners have embarked on significant programs of upgrading their boats.

As a rule, the changes to the boat over the years of pro­duction have been true improvements. At least one change, however, was less successful. The original changeover to diesel power resulted in a boat that was significantly underpowered, according to many owners.

Almost all the suggestions presented here for the upgrading of the Catalina 30 come from owners. Over 80 responded to the detailed questionnaire about the boat, and many added more pages of comments to the responses. The owners responding own boats that run the gamut of the production history of the Catalina 30, from hull number 2 to hull numbers well over 3,000!

Here, then are the suggestions of Catalina 30 owners for the improvement of the world’s most popular 30-footer. Not all will be applicable to any particular hull. Many of the changes suggested or performed by owners of early boats were incorporated into the production of later boats. In addition, some of the changes became factory retrofits, so that some older boats have been upgraded to the specifications of newer models.

Hull and Construction Details

Until very recently, all through hulls in the boat below the waterline consisted of gate valves screwed onto pipes fiberglassed into the hull. Current models utilize RC syn­thetic seacocks incorporating recessed through hull fit­tings.

The advantage of the old system is that there is no ex­posed, drag-inducing external skin fitting. The disadvan­tage is that gate valves are a generally poor substitute for seacocks, since it is not always possible to determine if they are open or closed, they can be jammed in the open position by debris, and they are as a rule more subject to corrosion.

Replacement of the gate valves with proper seacocks, either of tapered plug or ball valve construction, is recom­mended. Proper skin fittings should be installed at the same time, and these can either be faired in externally, or recessed (see Better Boat, February 1984).

As a rule, deck hardware is installed with large washers, but without proper backup plates. Stanchions, pulpits, and cleats can be made stronger by the addition of aluminum backup plates to help distribute load.

Like many other builders, Catalina has finally abandon­ed running lights mounted in the topsides. If being seen at night is a priority, install a pulpit-mounted combination running light, as is used in current production models of the Catalina 30.

Generally a little more attention to bottom detailing on the Catalina 30 should get you a little more speed. The rather large gap between the skeg and rudder should be filled in with fairing flaps to reduce crossflow. This im­provement, suited to many boats, will be detailed in a future issue. In addition, lines and seaweed can jam bet­ween the forward part of the rudder blade and the bottom of the skeg. A deflecting rod, perhaps a piece of 5 11 6″ diameter bronze rod, can be glassed into the bottom of the skeg, just overlapping the opening between the rudder blade and the bottom of the skeg. In New England, this type of rudder/skeg configuration, without the deflector, is known as a potcatcher because of the amount of lobster pot warp that can lodge in the opening.

Prop skeg configuration has changed slightly over the years, but as a rule, the skegs are fairly clean airfoil bronze castings. On the new Catalina 30s we examined, the casting was quite rough, however, and would benefit from a touchup coat of epoxy and microballoons, followed by a thorough sanding to smooth it out.

Prop wash when under power can make the Catalina 30 a bear to handle for extended periods. The original rudder was redesigned, and many older boats have been retrofitted with the improved rudder which greatly reduced the helm problem. If you bought your Catalina 30 used, and find the helm excessively heavy when powering, contact Catalina for information on the new rudder. If in doubt, send a photograph of your rudder to the company. Theyll tell you whether you have the new or old version.

Rig The rig of the Catalina 30 is decidely old fashioned, with its untapered mast tube, wooden spreaders, and unanodized mast and boom. Mast and boom should be painted, both to reduce surface oxidation and improve appearance.

Standing rigging, chainplates, and rigging fittings bring negative comments from a surprising number of owners, who consider this part of the boat a weak point. Beef-up kits for lower shrouds are available from the builder at nominal cost, and most older boats have had this modification If you have an older boat and don’t know, compare your boat to a recent model nearby or take a picture and send it to the builder.

If you have closed body, stainless steel turnbuckles, replace them with open body turnbuckles of bronze, chromed bronze, or mixed bronze/stainless steel construction. Steel on steel turnbuckles have a nasty habit of seizing, and the closed body makes its difficult to judge the amount of adjustment left in the screw.

The small diameter wire used for shrouds and stays stretches excessively, according to some owners, making it difficult to maintain headstay tension. Going up one wire diameter, at least on forestay and backstay, is suggested by many owners.

Although it is rarely mentioned by owners, we would suggest replacing the wooden spreaders with airfoil aluminum spreaders.

Internal halyards, led aft along the cabin top to the cockpit, are a popular modification. There is just enough room between the forward edge of the seahood and the cabintop handrail to put turning blocks on the deck for the halyards. Be sure to stagger the halyard exit holes on the mast, and fit them with chafe guards to keep the halyard wires from eating into the mast tube.

The boat quickly develops weather helm as it heels, a not uncommon trait of wide boats such as the Catalina 30. Even sailing upright on a broad reach, there is a fair amount of weather helm. This is minimized with the tall rig/bowsprit option, and can be reduced on the standard rig by raking the mast forward slightly, and having the mainsail cut with minimum roach. Unfortunately, reducing the roach gives away sail area that the boat may need in light air. We see no reason why the bowsprit couldnt be added to the standard rig boat to move the center of effort of the sail plan further forward. This will, of course, increase the boats rating under any racing rule.

Although the shrouds are set well inboard, the genoa track is mounted atop the toerail. This may be fine for reaching, but it leaves too wide a sheeting angle for going upwind, according to owners. Installing a genoa track inboard, between the stanchions and the cabin trunk, would decrease the sheeting angle by about 5 , and significantly improve windward performance. It may be necessary to install foot blocks at the aft end of the existing genoa track to get a good lead to the sheet winches, but this inboard track could probably be used with the working jib as well, which has a poor lead to the jibsheet winches without leading the sheet through a second block on the outboard track.

Traveler location is problematic. At the aft end of the cockpit, the lead to the boom is poor, and the mainsheet can pose a problem when jibing, according to owners. Locating the traveler forward, over the companionway, both interferes with the companionway and complicates the installation of a dodger.

As on most boats, we suggest the installation of the largest self-tailing jibsheet winches that will fit atop the coamings. Overkill is a nonexistent word when it comes to handling headsail sheets, and the self-tailer is the only way to go. Once youve tried them, youll never go back.

Engine and Installation Over the years, five different engines have been used in the Catalina 30: the workhorse Atomic Four gasoline engine, and the Universal 5411, Yanmar YSB12, Universal Model 18, and Universal Model 25 diesels. The engine compartment was designed for the Atomic Four. Some of the diesels present a tight fit.

According to owners, boats equipped with the Yanmar YSB12. and Universal 5411 diesels are underpowered. The current Universal Model 18 is only slightly larger. The two most desirable engines are the Universal Model 25 and the Atomic Four.

The Atomic Four is relatively quiet and powerful. All of the diesels are more noisy, and with the exception of the Model 25, much less powerful. If youre going to repower, go to the Universal Model 25. Slight modification of the hatch under the port settee will be required to fit the diesel, which is about 3 taller than the Atomic Bomb, as it is affectionately known.

If you can possibly manage it -and space is at a premium here -try to fit some sound insulation in the engine compartment, as the boat is noisy below underway with any of the diesels.

Since the prop installation is exposed, the boat could benefit from a folding or feathering prop. Since we have experienced a slight loss in speed and power with most folding proprs, don’t do it unless you have one of the larger engines. As a rule, we prefer the feathering Max-prop to a folding prop because it generates equal thrust in both reverse and forward, unlike most folding props. Watch the tip clearance carefully, as there isn’t much room here.

If you have a 25 amp alternator and dual batteries, you should switch to a larger, 55 amp alternator. According to owners, this is a simple adaptation.

While dual batteries have always been optional, most boats are equipped with them. If yours isn’t, do it. If the batteries are in the original port side location, shift them to the starboard side, under the chart table. This will eliminate the slight port list found in some older boats.

Comfort and Convenience

Ventilation is a problem on older boats. According to many owners, the sliding port in the head leaks, and there is no provision for ventilation in bad weather. The forward-sloping bulkhead between the cockpit and the main cabin makes it impossible to leave a hatch board out in rain or heavy weather.

Opening cabintop ventilation hatches over the head and forward end of the main cabin, as found on new versions of the boat, can be easily installed on older boats.

A cockpit dodger makes it possible to leave the hatch open in bad weather but makes access to the mainsheet a problem if the hatch-mounted traveler is installed. If you don’t want a dodger, and havent led the halyards aft along the cabin trunk, cowl vents in Dorade boxes on either side of the cabintop at its aft end will provide ventilation with the main hatch shut off.

The strong taper of the sides of the companionway, coupled with the fairly narrow internal and external teak pieces which hold the drop boards, strikes us as a serious weak point. While modification of the hatch, which we feel is just too big for offshore use, may not be practical, theres no reason that the teak retainers for the drop boards can’t be made an inch wider, both inside and outside. This would mean youd have to lift the boards further to either remove them or install them, but it would also make them more secure in a knockdown.

Modifications belowdecks are as many and varied as the personalities of the owners. As a rule, most Catalina 30s from all years suffer from inadequate division of storage spaces. Vertical dividers in the galley storage spaces behind the stove would greatly increase the practicality of that storage area.

Several other galley improvements will pay dividends. While the two galley sinks help give the Catalina 30 the feel of a big boat, the outboard sink, according to owners, can flood back through the drain if the boat is well heeled on starboard tack. Wed eliminate the outboard sink, fitting a dry well for storage instead. The inboard sink probably can’t flood under most sailing conditions, so the sink drain can then be left open for use.

Owners report mediocre icebox insulation, particularly on older models. Some owners merely stuff fiberglass house insulation between the outside of the icebox and the hull, but a far more effective solution is to glue on sheet urethane.

Older boats have no insulation in the icebox lid. This can be corrected by gluing sheet urethane to the underside of the hatch, fitting as closely to the sides of the hatch as possible to still give clearance on the inside. The sheet urethane can be glassed over directly. Dont use Styrofoam -its less efficient -and don’t glass over it, if you do. It will dissolve in polyester resin. Even the insulated hatches on new versions of the boat need improved gasketing between lid and icebox to reduce heat intrusion.

The chart table has been improved on new models by making it flat, rather than angled. Angled chart tables only work when they are mounted athwartships, rather than fore and aft. Theres no reason older tables can’t be modified in the same way. While youre at it, add drop leaves to the fore and aft ends of the table to increase the working surface, and make the fiddles removable so you can use all the surface.

If the boat is to be used for any serious cruising, consider replacing the standard alcohol stove with a gas stove. CNG is offered as an option on new boats, and it will greatly increase the livability of older boats. We guarantee that the improved performance of the cook will make this a worthwhile change every time.

Your cruising will be more comfortable if you add an extra water tank under the forward cabin berth. This has become a standard option on new boats, and is an easy retrofit in older boats. Do not, however, keep this tank full for daysailing or day racing, as the weight this far forward will accentuate pitching moment.

Conclusions

The Catalina 30 comes as a fairly well equipped basic boat. However, the responses of owners indicate that a lot of customizing can significantly improve the boats function.

Because there are so many Catalina 30s in the world, it has probably been the subject of more minor modification than any other 30-footer. The changes suggested here are by no means all the modifications that owners have made. Rather, they are either the most common ones, or the ones we feel do the most to make the boat easy to sail and easy to live with.

Every boat is a compromise, from the moment it leaves the designers drawing board until the end of its life. With a lot of thought, some money, and a fair amount of thoroughly enjoyable labor, you can improve any boat. And the Catalina 30 must surely be one of the most thoroughly owner-improved boats in the history of boat-building.

Below is a list of prices for each plans package that we offer. The first group lists our Sailing Yacht Designs and the second group lists our Power Yacht Designs .  Some designs are COMPLETED and others are INCOMPLETE.      COMPLETED STOCK DESIGNS :  The Estimating Plans and Building Plans prices given below in BOLD BLACK TYPE are for a FULLY COMPLETED STOCK DESIGN , the plans for which can be shipped immediately on receipt of your order.   Please see our Stock Design web page for a description of what is included, and how our prices have been determined.    INCOMPLETE OR 'SEMI-STOCK' DESIGNS :   Prices given below in PLAIN TEXT indicate plans that are INCOMPLETE.  WHY , you may ask, have I even bothered to list INCOMPLETE designs below...? Since people's circumstances often change, it is inevitable that some boat design projects will be abandoned before they are finished, and in some cases after considerable work has been done.  This can occur as is so well described in the first few pages of Rockwell Kent’s excellent non-fiction sea story, “North by East” , or as the result of a change of fortune, failing health, or for a myriad of other reasons. A few of the INCOMPLETE designs listed below (not very many) have been developed on my own, in other words, with myself as the 'client'.  Others have been created at the behest of an individual client to explore an idea or a concept.  Either way, I believe all of the designs listed below have merit.  We offer these INCOMPLETE designs at a substantial discount versus what it would cost to develop an entirely CUSTOM design, the difference being that the 'discovery' phase of the design process has already been accomplished.  Even so, there is still quite a bit of WORK REMAINING in order to complete the Plans Packages for those INCOMPLETE designs.  The prices given below reflect our actual cost to complete the Estimating Plans or the Building Plans Package for each design, assuming there will be no changes to the design as it is presented.  If you take umbrage with the cost of our INCOMPLETE designs, I urge you to read our Learning Yacht Design web page.  If one of the designs below is "close" to what you have in mind but you would like to tweak it some, I will be pleased to provide a detailed estimate for any revisions you have in mind.  If any of these designs is of interest, please inquire .    CUSTOM YACHT DESIGN :  A new CUSTOM design will necessarily include the process of " discovery " which represents Stage I of the design process, during which all options are on the table including size, type, configuration, layout, rig, materials, etc.  By comparison, given that many of the INCOMPLETE designs listed below have already had a considerable amount of design work done, very roughly the cost to create a CUSTOM design can be on the order of some 20% to 50% greater than the prices listed for the INCOMPLETE designs below, in order to accommodate the "discovery" process on the way to achieving a completed set of Building Plans.  Is the added cost worth it...?   Yes , we believe so. ESTIMATING PLANS :  Since all the basic information about each of our designs is available here at our web site, and for free, we no longer offer basic Study Plans.   Instead, we offer a much more useful and complete Estimating Plans for each of the designs listed below. Our Estimating Plans include the following: Drawings:    Sail Plan / Exterior Profile Drawing Interior Profile & Arrangement Drawing (one to four sheets, depending on vessel size) Structure Drawings (one or two additional sheets, depending on vessel size)    Documents:    Drawings & Documents List Written Vessel Specification Detailed Equipment List Structural Scantling List Laminate Schedule (if needed) Structure Weight & Surface Areas Builder Short List appropriate to the specific design Cover Letters to Builders re: scope of project, etc.    Our Estimating Plans are useful for study, planning, commentary, or mark-ups in the event you want to consider variations on the layout or the rig.  Primarily though, the Estimating Plans are intended for Cost Estimating .   Considering the price lists given below, the Estimating Plans represent an outstanding bargain and include quite a lot of useful information. Our Designer's Cover Letter serves as an introduction to the builder and outlines the scope of our involvement.  Our Owner's Cover Letter is a template which you can modify as needed in order to provide an introduction to the builder; to outline your intended build timing; and to let them know what stage of completion you intend their quotation to cover. What Will the Boat Cost..?

This is the most difficult question of all, and one for which I do not have a ready answer.  However it is a question that ultimately does have an answer...!   For any meaningful cost discovery it is necessary to solicit actual quotations for construction from a short list of qualified builders. 

For that purpose, we offer completed ESTIMATING PLANS for several of the designs listed below, with their prices listed in BOLD BLACK TEXT .  For any designs listed below that are INCOMPLETE, we have also provided the cost to develop ESTIMATING PLANS for that design, the prices for which are given in PLAIN TEXT.

  • If you order STOCK Building Plans within 90 days after purchasing STOCK Estimating Plans (for the same design), we will deduct half of what you paid for the STOCK Estimating Plans (less shipping) from your order.   
  • The cost given above to complete the Building Plans for an as-yet INCOMPLETE design includes the cost to develop Estimating Plans for that design.  
  • If you first arrange for completion of as-yet INCOMPLETE Estimating Plans, the subsequent cost to develop Building Plans for that design will be reduced by the full cost of having developed the Estimating Plans for that design.  In other words, the INCOMPLETE Building Plans prices given above already include the cost to develop the Estimating Plans.  
  • For ALL orders, if an already completed set of STOCK NC Cutting Files are ordered along with an already completed set of STOCK Building Plans for that vessel ( both paid for in full at the same time ) we will provide a discount of 10% off your entire order.  And... this discount may be applied in addition to either of the above discount options..! IMPORTANT DESIGN NOTES

GRP or PLYWOOD : Any of our Aluminum or Steel designs can be converted for construction in GRP or cold moulded plywood. The cost of any such revisions will be quoted separately. For more information, please inquire .

STEEL : Any Steel vessel can easily be re-specified with an aluminum structure. To convert a stock steel design to aluminum, please add 20% to the cost of the Estimating Plans or the Building Plans for that design.  Conversion of NC Cutting Files from steel to aluminum will however require a completely new set of NC cutting files, for which please inquire for an estimate.

* ALUMINUM : The Aluminum vessels listed above can only be built in steel if the design is extensively modified for that purpose in order to accommodate the added weight of the structure. For more information, please inquire .  Conversion from aluminum to steel will also require a completely new set of NC cutting files, for which please inquire for an estimate.

** WOOD : Please note that our large Wooden Vessel plans are generally priced higher, since revisions will nearly always be required in order to accommodate the differing wood species that will be available for construction, and the consequent differences in scantlings and overall weight. Those revisions (within reason) are included in the prices indicated above.

*** NC CUTTING FILES : Although a complete Building Plans set is required in order build any of these boat designs, the NC Cutting Files are entirely optional . In other words, the Building Plans are required , even if you purchase the NC Cutting Files for that design. The cost of NC Cutting Files is in addition to the cost of the Building Plans. The NC Cutting Files shown above with prices given in BOLD BLACK TYPE have already been developed , in which case they will have been created for either metric or imperial dimensioned materials, and for either steel or aluminum (noted in parentheses).

If the vessel will be built in a location that requires changing the measurement system , and / or if there is a change from steel to aluminum or aluminum to stee l structure, then additional work will be required, the cost of which will be quoted separately and in addition to the above prices. NACA Foil Shaped Low Drag Aluminum Paravanes

These low-drag paravanes are balanced and are adjustable for different speeds. They make use of NACA foil shaped surfaces combined with a lead ballasted NACA foil shaped bulb. They are designed to be machined out of marine grade aluminum plate and rod so that they can be shaped, and so they are lighter for a given wing area than steel paravanes would be.

The sizes given above are conservatively rated. In other words each size can be used on a larger vessel than is indicated. It is all a matter of degree. The roll attenuation will simply be more or it will be less, as compared to that of a larger or smaller wing area.

Paravane effectiveness is a function of wing area and pole length vs. your vessel’s righting moment. With a larger the vessel the poles can be made longer, achieving greater leverage, therefore a greater effect for the same size paravane.  If you have an existing vessel on which you would like to install these paravanes, but you don't have a paravane rig, we can provide a design for the rig that will fit your boat.

  • Bank Check : For any amount up to USD $ 1,000, if you wish to pay by cashier's check or money order, it should be drawn on a US bank in US funds. It is most secure when sending funds to use a courier service such as DHL, FedEx, EMS, UPS that provide online tracking, rather than regular postal mail delivery service. If sending a cashier's check by courier, please inquire for our physical shipping address. For all payments made by check or money order we will wait until your check has cleared prior to sending out your order (for foreign issued cashier's checks or money orders, clearance takes a minimum of 10  business days after it is deposited ).
  • Credit Card : For orders of up to USD $1,000, payment may also be made by credit card (Visa, Master Card, Amex) by using our PDF Order Form . The amount billed to your credit card will be the cost in US dollars, plus shipping. The cost in foreign currency will depend on the exchange rate applicable at the time of the transaction.  A transaction fee of 5% will be added to all credit or debit card orders.

Description

This is a design commissioned by someone who built one of our clinker ply Kane Suffolk Beach Punts and who wanted a safe, comfortable deep water cruising yacht which could also find it's way up relatively shallow creeks. For her length, she is to my mind the ultimate cruising vessel with the capability to cruise distant shores and then to travel up small rivers. The hull is modelled on the Pilot Cutter for it's seaworthiness and easily driven form. She is built using the clinker ply method over a rigid framework of pre-shaped ply bulkheads and girders. She has twin bilge keels so that she can dry out along with a central ballast keel and centreplate for windward ability. Accommodation is comfortable with bunks for up to 6 crew, a large wc and spacious galley plus plenty of locker space. The engine is 35hp and she is able to have large tanks for extended cruising. Both yawl and gaff cutter rigs are shown.

    At small boat, I agree it will save time noticeably because of tight hull. I assembled the puzzle at the hull. I have to notice it will be hard to move even one belt of hull assembled at table from table to hull by one or two persons. For such operation for 10m boat, I think 3+ persons required.
