DAUNTLESS’ the Explorers’ EXPLORER is a line of new expedition vessels developed for adventurous spirits desiring to explore remote, exotic locations in comfort and safety, with minimal shore support. The 75-foot luxury yacht D75 is built like a small ship with all the accoutrements of a luxurious megayacht, including a timeless look and a flowing, distinctive style.

Naval Architect, Jon Overing, of Overing Yacht Designs , created the outstanding D75 Explorer yacht with seaworthiness, safety and outstanding fuel economy required for long passages with minimal operating costs.

Available in both 75 and 85-foot versions, DAUNTLESS is based upon Overing’s proprietary fast-displacement hull form, noted for its superior seakeeping qualities, increased speeds and fuel efficiency.

The D75 yacht`s seagoing hull exceeds one mile to the gallon economy resulting in a cruising range of over 4,000 nautical miles with standard 4,000 gallon tankage.

Daunless D75 yacht - Dining

The triple-deck arrangement and additional hull depth inherent in the fast-displacement hull design, facilitates a full four stateroom ensuite configuration, plus separate ensuite crew quarters aft. The centrally located full-beam master stateroom features luxurious his and hers bathrooms.

A dayhead is conveniently located aft of the wheelhouse. A full height lower level is incorporated beneath the guest staterooms, which includes a commercial laundry facility, three additional deep freeze units, as well as extensive dry goods storage and storage for auxiliary machinery and spare parts, enabling the D75 yacht to cruise for extended periods in remote locales without need for reprovisioning.

DAUNTLESS models are constructed entirely infused vinylester resin. The SCRIMP process is used throughout with a solid laminate hull, with foam cored superstructure, decks, stringers and bulkheads. The result is an exceptionally strong, low maintenance vessel, resistant to blistering and delamination.

Common to military and high-end commercial vessels, DAUNTLESS yachts are equipped with 70/30 copper nickel stand pipe sea chests and monel inverted cone strainers, rather than standard through-hulls, sea valve and basket-style strainers. All equipment is commercial grade and top quality with extensive use of 316L stainless steel, many components being polished to a mirror finish.

All vital – and some non-vital – systems have full redundancy in the event of failure. This allows uninterrupted operation until repairs can be effected, essential for any vessel embarking on extended cruising. Convenient walk-down stairs with generous 6’4” headroom within the laundry and forward machinery spaces provide easy access and maintenance from the interior.

The exceptionally luxurious JC Espinosa designed interior of the D75 Explorer yacht in traditional raised panel oak creates a handsome, flowing space with impeccable attention to every detail. True megayacht quality finishing exceeds that of vessels commonly found in this market niche.

Nowhere is the sense of quiet luxury blended with informality more apparent than in the expansive galley, which is open to the wheelhouse. Within arm’s reach of the galley is a plush elevated settee creating a comfortable extensive space for casual entertaining while underway or at anchor, ideal for owner-operators who do not want to be isolated in the galley.

DAUNTLESS D75 yacht is a serious off-shore explorer with megayacht features in just 75-foot length, striking a perfect balance in today’s world climate, combining tremendous fuel efficiency, low operating costs and requirement for minimal crew.

Owner's comments.

Purchased new May 2016, she spent 9 months in Ft. Lauderdale for initial commissioning. In March 2017, she departed Ft. Lauderdale for the west coast on her own bottom through the Panama Canal up the west coast to British Columbia, Canada to be extended 9’. The voyage included  a 5 day nonstop passage from Key West to the Panama Canal and an 8-1/2 day nonstop passage from Panama City to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Since being commissioned in August of 2018 at Platinum Marine/Cresent Custom Yachts, she has travelled from British Columbia to Los Angeles, CA, to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, back to Los Angeles, CA, back up to British Columbia, back to Los Angeles, CA and in December 2019 she departed for points south, thru the Panama Canal, to Cayman Islands, to Key West to Ft. Lauderdale. Our intention was to cruise the east coast and cross the Atlantic on July 1, 2020 for Gibraltar and the Med.

She spent 9 weeks in Ft. Lauderdale during the early stages of the pandemic and then traveled up the east coast to Bar Harbor Maine and back to Ft. Lauderdale for the winter.  We departed Ft. Lauderdale in spring of 2021 and cruised to Maine and the east coast and the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.  After returning to the West Coast, we traveled from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the winter of 22/23. She is currently in Marina Del Rey, CA. Since taking ownership, UNDAUNTED has traveled more than 1-1/2 times the distance around the globe.

When she was being completed, our marching orders to the Naval Architect was to have the most capable, comfortable, seaworthy luxury 82’ cockpit motor yacht ever built. She has 4 luxury staterooms all with ensuite and comfortable accommodations for 8 plus 2 crew in separate quarters with a crew lounge and galley and head and stall shower.  From her state of the art electronics, 4,650 gallons of fuel, bulbous bow, zero speed stabilizers, redundant systems, 17’ Walker Bay tender with full electronics including radar, 12’ Walker Bay tender with gps/plotter/depth sounder, 3 person SeaDoo with suspension, even an 11’ inflatable with wheels for beaching, serious fishing and diving equipment, a 1,000 pound per day Eskimo ice maker, a Nitrox Systems NS450 continuous duty dive compressor, tournament cockpit and her ability to take a 71 degree roll totally void of liquid ballast and right herself, we believe our goal has been achieved.

She has very comfortable crew accommodations including separate head and stall shower and separate lounge with galley.

Since her commissioning, she has been continually upgraded and updated, the last of which was the recent replacement of the redundant Furuno NavNet1 system with a NavNet3 system with 19” MFD’s and a 200kw radar at a cost of $50,000. In 2018 we installed an additional Furuno NavNet2 system with 15” MFD’s and a 24kw radar with a separate backbone and auto pilot, giving complete and total redundant navigation systems. We also have installed a 12,000 watt 220v 3-phase inverter as back up to the twin Cummins-Onan 3 phase generators, powered by 8 each 350amp 8D AGM batteries with their own 100amp 24v charger.

The membrane in the port watermaker membrane was replaced in 2019 and the starboard watermaker was overhauled and a second membrane (also the original was replaced) in 2024 doubling its capacity.

She came with 2 each 132# SST anchors each with 300' of 1/2" chain. Both anchors have been replaced with 250# custom made galvanized anchors and 400' of 1/2" chain, all sourced in North America.

Classics under £10,000 – the Dauntless yachts

N o one would ever claim that a Dauntless is a superlative in the history of yacht design or construction. These are boats lightly built to a crude design, but their importance in getting British sailors afloat cheaply after the war inspires great affection in those who know them.

Much recorded history of the Dauntlesses has been lost in the sands of time. This is surprising, because it’s thought that at least 400 of them were built between the end of the Second World War and the early 1970s.

Dauntless

The Dauntless’ chief attraction was its price. The Dauntless Boat Company of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex had previously built dinghies (for Butlins holiday camps among others), small launches and dayboats, and moved to Wales in the war to build small craft for the Admiralty. One of those was a broad, clinker 16ft (4.9m) ‘cutter’ – a power launch in this case. After the war, the firm relocated to Canvey Island in the Thames Estuary, where it speculatively put a basic cabin over one of those hulls, and gave it a gaff rig.

It sold immediately to a local customer, who took it apart and started building a series, to a class he named the “Chesford 16” and much to the vexation of the Dauntless Company, who responded by offering a 20ft (6m) version. This rapidly evolved into the standard 22ft (6.7m) boat, with gaff or bermudan rig. Everything about it was simple and low-key, built to a price, side-by-side, by a team of 22 apprentices managed by two boatbuilders.

Two of them would do nothing but cut planks from template, while another two would, for instance, do nothing but clench, so despite their lowly status, these apprentices were highly skilled in niche areas. There was little in the way of longitudinal stiffening – two bulkheads and a single beamshelf – and the ‘keel’, such as it was, had a parallel run; fine yachts have boat-shaped keelsons.

Ballast was all internal, and the centreboard and rudder were simply cut out of sheet steel. The centreboard pivot was through the keel (only 2.5in/5cm, wide) with the result that many of them have now broken their centreboards. Sailing performance was as you might expect, leading most owners to later add a bowsprit for better performance. But the low price (a brochure from the late 1940s quotes £491 – about £15,000 today) put a whole generation of sailors on the waters of England’s east coast after the war; and the motorboat origins meant a very usable beam. They were marketed in the Army and Navy Stores chain of shops around the country.

They sold by the hundred: where else could you get a beamy, commodious little cabin yacht, with a Stuart Turner engine as standard? The first boats (the Mk 1s, if you like) had an attractive, timeless appearance. Later versions extended the cabin sides to the gunwale and had an extra plank of freeboard for sitting headroom, swapping some of the boat’s good looks for better usability . A number were built at 23ft and 24ft, and some motor launches on the same hull. Early boats were planked in larch or spruce, later ones in mahogany, then iroko. They were, says boatbuilder and class devotee Alan Staley, who has fixed up many over the years, “one step up from a rowing boat”.

There is, to this day, some controversy about the design. Lloyd’s Register credits Sid Lattimer, while others hold that Reg Patten should receive the credit. Given that the boat evolved from an Admiralty launch of fairly standard form, the argument seems moot. It is safe to say that the design is in-house from the builder. Reg Patten of the Dauntless Company left in 1958 to build the improved Sea King yachts in Leigh-on-Sea, which continued production into the 1990s. And indirectly, the legacy of the small, clinker cruising yacht continued with the Finesse 21 and 24, built by Alan Platt from the 1960s onwards.

In sailing terms, the Dauntless has great form stability, takes the ground level and can sail in very thin water. They are reputed to slam in a seaway and are not designed for offshore work, but well-ballasted Dauntlesses have voyaged to the Baltic and beyond.

dauntless yachts website

CONDITION AND COST

The three main areas to look at are the broad-planked cabin sides, which sometimes shrink and let water in through the portholes; the keel, which might be broken and jury-rigged; and the centreplate, which was insufficiently braced to withstand the test of time. If you are willing to do some work, the Dauntless is great for lo-fi thrills in a characterful, light, handy classic that is perfectly suited to the flat waters of the Thames Estuary. Expect to pay £0-£5,000.
