The Scheherazade, a 460-foot superyacht, has been held in Italy since May 2022 in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is believed to have ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Scheherazade superyacht was impounded by the Italian government in May 2022 in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Instead of falling into disrepair, Italy has allowed its owner to maintain and refit the vessel, but it won't disclose who is footing the bill.
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the vessel has been held at port in Marina di Carrara, located almost 90 miles northwest of Florence, since it was impounded by authorities in the spring of 2022. For over a year, the Italian government has permitted the owner to continue paying for the ship's staff, its maintenance and refitting of the vessel. But Italy won't identify the owner.
Italy's Finance Ministry said in a May 2022 news release that the superyacht had "significant economic and business links" with "prominent elements of the Russian government" but didn't name the owner of the ship.

Ravaged by russian troops, bucha rises from the ashes.
According to the website SuperYachtFan , the 460-foot superyacht belongs to Russian billionaire Eduard Khudainatov. However, Bloomberg News reported in 2022 that he is a "straw owner" of the superyacht — as well as another ship — and that the Scheherazade actually belongs to Putin.
The Financial Times reported that the Scheherazade has 22 cabins, two helicopter decks and a spa and that it's being refitted by the Italian Sea Group. NPR reached out to the Italian Sea Group for comment but did not hear back before publication.
The United States created Task Force KleptoCapture in the wake of Putin's war against Ukraine, aiming to hold Russian oligarchs accountable for evading sanctions. In its one year of operation, the task force has brought charges to at least 35 individuals and entities, NPR previously reported.
Part of those efforts included seizing luxury items belonging to billionaires with ties to the Kremlin. This includes items like a 348-foot yacht seized in Fiji in May 2022, which is valued at about $300 million and is now sitting in San Diego.

The Italian government has seized a luxury superyacht worth an estimated £570m that is believed to be linked to Russian president Vladimir Putin .
The vessel was impounded as part of the EU’s sanctions against Russia for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine , under which similar yachts belonging to Russian oligarchs have been confiscated.
The six-deck Scheherazade had been undergoing repairs in the port of Marina di Carrara in Tuscany since last September. Recent activity at the dockside suggested that the crew were preparing to put the yacht to sea, as calls grew for it to be included in the sanctions.
The Italian finance ministry said in a statement that the owner of the yacht had ties to “prominent elements of the Russian government”, without naming them. US officials have previously told The New York Times that the vessel could belong to Mr Putin, though there has been no official confirmation of this.
Supporters of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny were also of the belief that the vessel belonged to the Russian president. In a report released in March , an organisation set up by Mr Navalny said it had evidence that the boat belonged to Mr Putin, as several crew members were drawn from Russia’s Federal Protective Service (FSO), which is tasked with protecting the president.
In March, the ship’s British captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, denied that Mr Putin had ever owned or set foot on the Scheherezade . “I have never seen him. I have never met him,” he told the The New York Times .
Days later, Mr Bennett-Pearce said he had been left with “no choice” but to reveal the owner’s identity to the Italian police, adding: “I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this will clear the vessel of all negative rumours and speculations.”
Police boarded the yacht – which is over 450ft long and has two helicopter landing pads – late on Friday to execute the order, the government said.
Officials said they had struggled to identify the real owner of the boat, as it is registered in the Cayman Islands and was built by the German firm Lürssen. The yacht was delivered to its owner in 2020 and can host up to 18 guests and 40 crew, Reuters reported.
Italian authorities said the owner was not on any sanctions lists drawn up by Brussels since Mr Putin’s declaration of war on 24 February, although Rome has asked Brussels to rectify this.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, while addressing the Italian parliament in March, urged the government to impound the yacht as part of the EU’s efforts to put pressure on Mr Putin.
Italy confiscated yachts and villas worth over £770m in March and April from Russian billionaires with close ties to Mr Putin, in a bid to hurt Moscow financially.
Earlier in March, Italy seized a £530m megayacht owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, as oligarchs around the world scrambled to save their yachts and other luxury assets from western governments.
And in April the German authorities seized the world’s largest superyacht, Dilbar , sprawling over 512ft, which belonged to billionaire Alisher Usmanov before he transferred its ownership to his sister.

Italy seizes billion-dollar superyacht Scheherazade, reportedly linked to the Russian government
Topic: Unrest, Conflict and War
Scheherazade, one of the world's most expensive yachts, is reportedly linked to the Russian government. ( Reuters: Jennifer Lorenzini )
The Italian government says it has seized a luxury yacht worth almost a billion dollars, which is reportedly linked to the Russian government.
Key points:
- The 140-metre superyacht has been rumoured to have links to Russia's President, but its actual owner isn't publicly known
- Italian authorities have seized the vessel, which they say is linked to "prominent elements of the Russian government"
- Italy has asked the EU to introduce sanctions against the yacht's true owner
The 140-metre, six-deck Scheherazade had been undergoing repairs in the Italian port of Marina di Carrara since September, but recent activity at the dockside suggested the crew might be preparing to put the vessel to sea.
Italy's Finance Minister had adopted a decree to stop the superyacht from sailing away from the Tuscan port earlier this week, after an investigation of the vessel linked it to "prominent elements of the Russian government".
Police boarded the yacht late on Friday to execute the seizure order, the Italian government said.
The vessel has previously been linked by some media organisations to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While Italy's finance ministry has not named an owner, a source with direct knowledge of the investigation into the vessel told the Reuters news agency that Italian police believed the owner was Eduard Khudainatov, the former chief of Russian energy giant Rosneft, who is not currently a target of European Union sanctions.
Italy's finance ministry said the probe carried out by the country's financial police corps found "significant economic business links of the beneficial owner" of the Scheherazade as well to other subjects included in a list issued in 2014 as part of EU measures prompted by Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
The ministry said the owner was not on any sanctions lists drawn up by Brussels following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, it said Rome had asked the EU to rectify this and had ordered the boat be seized pending a decision.
Based on the Italian investigation, minister Daniele Franco adopted a "freezing decree'' regarding the yacht, which flies the flag of the Cayman Islands and which had "long been under the attention of the authorities", a statement said.
It comes after the superyacht Amadea — believed to belong to sanctioned Russian oligarch Sulieman Kerimov — was seized by Fijian authorities and put in the custody of the United States earlier this week.
A few weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a speech to Italian politicians, urged Italy to continue freezing the assets of Russian oligarchs and officials. He cited the Scheherazade by name.
The luxury vessel has two helicopter pads and can host up to 18 guests and 40 crew.
Its owner has never been publicly identified, but there have been rumours that it belongs to Mr Putin or a member of his inner circle.
An organisation set up by imprisoned Putin critic Alexei Navalny released a report in March saying it had evidence that the boat belonged to Mr Putin.
It said many of its crew were drawn from Russia's Federal Protective Service (FSO), which is tasked with protecting the Russian President.
The Kremlin did not respond at the time to a request for comment on whether Mr Putin was the owner or whether members of the FSO were crew members.
Italy has sequestered villas and yachts from wealthy Russians, who regularly came to the country on holiday and had bought property in many prestigious locations.

Italy freezes $700 million mega-yacht linked to "prominent elements of the Russian government"
May 6, 2022 / 8:17 PM EDT / CBS/AP
The Italian finance minister has adopted a decree that will impede a mega-yacht from sailing away from a Tuscan port, after an investigation carried out by Italy's financial police corps indicated the luxury vessel Scheherazade has links to "prominent elements of the Russian government."
There had been fears that the 459-foot long yacht, which has been in dry dock in the port of Marina di Carrara, was preparing to sail out of Italian waters soon. Based on the Italian investigation, Minister Daniele Franco adopted a "freezing decree" regarding the yacht, which flies the flag of the Cayman Islands and which had "long been under the attention of the authorities," the statement said.
A few weeks after Russia's war against Ukraine began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a speech to Italian lawmakers, urged Italy to continue freezing assets of Russian oligarchs and officials. He cited by name the Scheherazade, which, according to some reports, belongs to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Italian ministry statement didn't identify the boat's owner nor specify who are the "prominent" elements of the Russian government. But it said the "actual owner" of the Scheherazade should be included in the 2014 EU sanctions list.
Italian media have reported that the ship is registered to Eduard Khudainatov, a former executive at Russia's state-owned Rosneft oil company, who has not been sanctioned.
Khudainatov is at the center of another mega yacht dispute in Fiji, where police moved Thursday to seize the $300 million Amadea. American officials say the Amadea is owned by Suleiman Kerimov, a sanctioned Russian oligarch, who built his fortune in gold mining. A Fijian lawyer for the company the Amadea is registered to argued in court that the ship is owned by Khudainatov.
The news comes as western nations are cracking down on sanctions against Russian billionaires by taking control of their mega yachts and other valuable assets, including villas and private jets, parked in territory over which their governments have jurisdiction. In early April, American and Spanish law enforcement agents took control of a mega yacht owned by an oligarch who's close to Putin.
In March, Italy said it seized a $70 million yacht belonging to Alexey Alexandrovits Mordaschov, a steel magnate with close ties to the Kremlin. It also froze Lena, a $54 million yacht belonging to Gennady Nikolayevich Timchenko, a close friend of Putin, whom the EU has sanctioned.
The seizures have caused some — possibly including Putin — to rush to move their boats into friendlier waters.

Italy seizes a superyacht tied to Putin.
Italian police boarded the yacht, the Scheherazade, late on Friday, ending what appeared to be preparations to set sail.

After weeks of investigation, Italian authorities announced late Friday evening that they had impounded a nearly $700 million superyacht, saying that its owner had “significant economic and business links” to “prominent elements of the Russian government.” According to U.S. officials, the prominent element is none other than Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin.
In recent days, the Scheherazade, as the enormous luxury ship is named, showed signs of readying to set sail , apparently aiming to leave before the Italian government could seize it. But late Friday, Italian police boarded the yacht — which is 459 feet long, with two helicopter decks, a gym and a swimming pool convertible into a dance floor — and told the crew that the ship was not going anywhere. The Italian finance ministry announced that an investigation had established that the ship’s owner, whom it did not name, was an individual that “threatened peace and international security” and that the individual’s actions amounted to the “undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”
The ministry also specified the urgency to implement the restrictions as the reason to freeze the floating, and extremely expensive, asset.
The Italian authorities, who have actively impounded villas and yachts belonging to sanctioned Russian oligarchs, said in a statement that it had impounded the ship, which is in the dry dock of the port of Marina di Carrara, on the northern coast of Tuscany, even though the person they had identified as its technical owner did not currently appear on a European sanctions list. They added that they could not name the individual until the European Council published the name, and the Italian government committee tasked with protecting the country’s financial security called for the person’s name to be added to the list.
Italian media outlets have for weeks reported that Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oil tycoon who is currently not under sanctions, owns the yacht. Mr. Khudainatov is considered close to Igor Sechin, a powerful oligarch and close friend of Mr. Putin’s who is currently under sanctions. Italian financial police officials reached on Friday night declined to say who they believed owned the ship.
The captain and the chairman of the Marina di Carrara shipyard, where the Scheherazade underwent refitting and has wintered for two consecutive years, have denied assertions made by U.S. intelligence service, construction workers, crew members and locals in the small port that the vessel unofficially belongs to, and is for the use of, Mr. Putin. They have argued that, on paper, it belonged to a Russian individual who hasn’t been sanctioned by international authorities.
The ship’s captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, told The New York Times recently that its owner was not on the sanctions list, but also denied to have seen or met Mr. Putin on the yacht.
Yet a former Scheherazade crew member told The New York Times that he had never heard of Mr. Khudainatov and confirmed that crew members always believed and discussed the real owner to be Mr. Putin.

Still officially known as 'Project Lightning' the 140m (459ft) motor yacht SCHEHERAZADE has been delivered and is currently undertaking her maiden voyage to Norway .
First hitting the water in 2019, Project Lightning has now been delivered as SCHEHERAZADE .
According to AIS tracking data, she left Lurssen's facilities in Bremen yesterday and is currently en route to Kristiansand, on Norway's southern coast. It comes after the 10,167 GT motor yacht underwent her first round of sea trials in August 2019.
Lurssen has kept all details about their fifth-largest superyacht delivery under wraps. It is being reported that the yacht's exterior styling comes from Espen Oeino, but this has not been confirmed by the yard.

Key design features of the six-deck superyacht include a pair of helipads- one on the foredeck and one on the aft deck. She also has impressive underwater lightning and high-volume interiors that allow for plenty of indoor spaces for relaxation and entertainment.
Lurssen is on track for a busy 2020, with other deliveries including the 142m (466ft) motor yacht OPUS (or 'Project Redwood') scheduled for later this year. The yard also recently sent 87m superyacht 'Project Hawaii' out on sea trials, signalling promising activity and good progress for Northern European shipyards amid the Coronavirus crisis.
The name Scheherazade comes from an Arabic term meaning "world-freer". In literature, Scheherazade is a legendary Arabic queen immortalized as the narrator of all one thousand stories in the 'One Thousand and One Nights'.
At 10,167 GT Scheherazade is believed to be the 6th largest Lurssen superyacht ever delivered. The largest Lurssen-built superyacht in terms of GT is 156m megayacht Dilbar with a GT of 15,917. At 139.29, Al Salamah has a larger volume of 12,234 GT.
It is not yet known whether M/Y SCHEHERAZADE will become available for superyacht charters .
