The Great EscapeThe idea of carpe diem – seizing the day – has never had more resonance. It is perhaps one reason for a growing boom in yacht sales as people look to embrace the sheer pleasure of being on the ocean after a torrid year. As the fresh blossom of spring yields to the warm blue of early summer, it is starting to feel like we might finally be slowly emerging from the frustrations and horrors of the past year. While things are still a long way from normal, those lockdown dreams of open air, sparkling azure water, gentle ocean breezes and the sun on our faces are starting to feel within reach once again. Indeed, the latest figures from the yacht market suggest that more people than ever before are craving that seaborne escape – sales through the end of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 in the superyacht sector, for example, have broken records. The first three months of 2021 have seen 133 brokerage sales of yachts above 24 metres – a massive 46 per cent increase over the same period in 2020, according to BOAT Pro. Critically, it appears that a lot of those sales are being driven by first-time buyers. But what has suddenly led to this renewed thirst for the ocean? The obvious assumption would be that yachting has afforded a degree of escape in relative safety amid the pandemic, and that this, in turn, has fuelled sales. As Rob McCallum – founding partner of EYOS Expeditions – explains, with considerable planning some guests have been able to enjoy time on the water even as international travel has proven complicated. “In the beginning, even flying privately, it was very difficult,” he says. “But we’ve managed to keep things going throughout with, for example, our work with DSSV (deep submersible support vessel) Pressure Drop , which has been working in the western Pacific. We’ve had to do 14-day quarantines, but the guests are allowed to do that on the vessel. So people fly in and are met by an agent, and then they’re taken by special vehicle to the dock and get directly on the vessel, doing the same in reverse on their return.” However, this perception of a perfect escape that keeps you, your family and friends protected in a self-contained ‘bubble’ might not be the main driver of the surging demand. “For sure, there are a lot of people who have been feeling frustrated over the past 12 months have not been able to move freely, and that has been one catalyst for people stepping forward,” begins Ian Sherwood, a yacht broker with internationally renowned brokerage firm Burgess . “In particular I think there are a lot more first-time buyers at the moment – perhaps those who before were long-term charterers who are taking those first steps into ownership. There are a lot of charter bookings for 2021 that were rescheduled from 2020, meaning some of the charter boats are already very busy, but there’s still uncertainty about 2021 and on top of all that some charter boats may be stuck in the wrong regions which means there is even less availability. I think that has driven a lot of charterers to say, ‘we can’t do what we want to do so maybe being an owner is the answer as we can drive the calendar and know that the boat is always available.” Of course, this surge to the sea presents interesting problems in itself. While most builders were quick to implement new working practices at the start of the pandemic that not only protected their workforces but also allowed them to keep on top of their pre-pandemic build schedules, a rise in demand naturally is putting pressure on the market. “This, perhaps, is the very tail-end of the 2008 global financial crisis, as the after-effect of that was a dip in production, and subsequently yacht deliveries between 2013 to 2015,” Sherwood explains. “That means there are now fewer five-year-old boats around.” There does remain an increasing appeal of yachting as a safe haven escape, but again there are other facets of the past year that are driving interest. “There are very few vacations that are as COVID-19 secure as being on a private yacht – you can fly in privately to a yacht where the crew have been health-screened and pre-quarantined, and there are not many options that can offer that low level of risk or exposure to the virus,” Sherwood offers. “And then there’s the fact that we are becoming more flexible in the wider world, that people are more accepting that we don’t need to be behind a desk, or at least not the desk in our usual office space. A lot of our clients are asking about that – connectivity and office space on board is a big request. The ability to work remotely from a yacht offers a different option to people.” But fundamentally, perhaps there is an even greater reason or a greater imperative to why so many people have sought yachting – and yachts – as an escape this past year. It is less to do with being the only option, and more to do with a renewed sense of life and a reordering of priorities – a surge of seizing the day, if you will. “I think really it comes down to just why wouldn’t you do your thing?” Sherwood concludes. “After the last 12 months and everything we’ve gone through, if you have the ability to own or to charter a yacht – of any size – then why on earth aren’t you doing it? It’s the perfect time to take the plunge.” You may also like...Spotlight on New ZealandThe arrival of the America’s Cup next year is bringing renewed attention to New Zealand as a far-flung and multi-dimensional yachting destination. Manslaughter probe is launched over sinking of Bayesian superyacht after at least six people died including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch when vessel capsized off the coast of SicilyBy Nick Craven In Sicily and Jon Brady and Rory Tingle Published: 04:53 EDT, 23 August 2024 | Updated: 07:49 EDT, 23 August 2024 View comments A manslaughter investigation was launched today over the Bayesian superyacht disaster after at least six people died when it sank off the coast of Sicily. British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who owned the £30million vessel, was among those killed in the tragedy on Monday during a 'victory trip' to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the US, while his 18-year-old daughter Hannah remains missing. Italian authorities are now 'investigating shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide' - similar to the charge of manslaughter in the UK - according to Italian media. The investigation is being led by Ambrogio Cartosio, head of the prosecutor's office in the nearby town of Termini Imerese, with more details expected to be revealed at a press conference tomorrow morning. Causing a shipwreck is a separate offence under the Italian penal code and those found guilty of provoking or causing a shipwreck could face up to 12 years in prison. Search teams at the site of the Bayesian sinking this morning as they prepare to continue looking for the final missing person, Hannah Lynch The Bayesian yacht sank on August 19 off the coast of Sicily amid severe stormy weather Banking boss Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy died in the disaster (left). Tech boss Mike Lynch (right), who had just been cleared of fraud charges in the US, also died Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were also aboard the ship The body of chef Recaldo Thomas (pictured) was discovered on the day of the sinking The body of the boat's chef was found shortly after it sank - five other bodies have since been discovered (pictured: rescue workers stage a dry run of equipment) Investigators have been examining videos and photographs taken on the night of the storm showing the last minutes of the ship, as well as CCTV footage of the port. Italian news website Palermo Today said coastguard officials have visited all of the homes and public places with surveillance cameras pointed out to sea in the area. The Prosecutor's Office are also reviewing the actions and decisions made by the Bayesian's Captain James Cutfield, 51, and Matthew Griffith, 22, who is understood to be the first officer, according to Palermo Today. It has been reported that Mr Cutfield was quizzed 'at length' for at least two hours by the prosecution team. The agonising search Dr Lynch's daughter Hannah is continuing today amid fears the missing teenager is still trapped within the sunken superyacht. Tributes have been pouring in for the victims of the tragedy, including her father Dr Lynch, once dubbed the British Bill Gates, after his body was recovered from one of the vessel's cabins early yesterday. Superyacht victims 'may have been trying to escape incoming water as vessel sank after being found on opposite side to their cabins', sources say - as search continues for missing HannahDr Lynch's was the fifth body to be found in the lower deck of the ill-fated yacht which lies on the seabed at a depth of 164ft half a mile from the port in Porticello. The tragic discovery came after Italian authorities indicated they believed they had found the father and daughter when the first of four bodies were pulled from the wreck. But yesterday morning, they said Hannah was, in fact, still missing and the first bodies brought ashore were those of British businessman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, his wife Judy, 71, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, 59, and his wife Neda, 57. Dr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who was among 15 people rescued in 'apocalyptic' scenes from the sinking, had been anxiously waiting for news of her husband and daughter. The search for Hannah, a bright student who recently secured a place to read English at Oxford, is said to have been hindered by debris blocking access to all areas of the yacht. The national head of the fire brigade Carlo Dall'Oppio told the Mail that operations are proceeding slowly because they must protect the safety of the divers because of the depth of the wreck. 'The sixth body has not yet been located, we have not yet inspected the entire boat, so we think it is possible that the body is still inside. 'These operations are proceeding slowly, because we must first preserve the health of our operators. It is a difficult job - there are about 40 divers.' It comes as Italian media reported that the victims were found on the opposite side of the yacht to their cabins which suggested they may have been trying to escape the incoming water by reaching the higher ground. The Bayesian's captain, James Cutfield (pictured) has been questioned by officials carrying out an investigation into the tragedy A coastguard boat sits on the water close to the sinking site off the coast of Sicily this morning Italian fire service divers speak on a rescue boat this morning as they prepare to resume searches for Hannah Lynch The superyacht was said to have gone down by the bow and settled on its starboard on a tilt. 'We found them all on that side...we had maps with the layout of the cabins and the positions of the guests, and that's not where we recovered them,' a source said. Emergency workers said they would need a 'crystal ball' to be able to predict when the sixth body would be recovered. Luca Cari, a spokesman for the fire rescue service, told Sky News: 'It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours.' A decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is 'not on the agenda', but will be in the future, Vincenzo Zagarola from the Italian Coastguard has said. He also said that the missing woman is believed to be still inside the boat. As the search continued last night tributes continued to be paid to for those who have been confirmed dead. The Bloomer's now orphaned children released a heartbreaking statement in which they said the loss of their parents was an 'an unimaginable grief to shoulder'. 'Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren. 'Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now,' they said. The chairman of children's charity the NSPCC described Mr Bloomer, the former honorary treasurer of the organisation, as 'a very kind individual', Speaking about the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman and his wife, Neil Berkett said: 'We remember Jonathan from his time with us as a very kind individual with a great sense of humour and Judy as formidable and passionate.' Tributes to Dr Lynch were also paid by senior industry figures who applauded his contribution to the world of tech. David Tabizel, Dr Lynch's co-founder at Autonomy, said: 'The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.' 'He was exhausting, exhilarating & incisive... Britain's Bill Gates? Not really. Britain's Steve Jobs. The father of modern AI.' Industry group TechUK also paid tribute calling him 'a hugely significant and pioneering figure' in the UK technology sector. Lord Browne of Madingley described him as 'the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK'. The chairman of BeyondNetZero said: 'His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally.' Dr Lynch's close friend Brent Hoberman, the former chief executive of lastminute.com, described the disaster as a 'Shakespearean sort of tragedy'. He said: 'We were all hoping for a miracle, we knew it was unlikely but you still hold out hope.' 'It's just so unbelievably tragic for him to go through what he went through over the last 12 years, defending his name and not really living a full life, to now for his death to be confirmed is obviously incredibly sad.' Bayesian shipbuilder claims crew had '16 MINUTES' to warn passengers as superyacht 'dragged its anchor' before sinking - as animated map shows nearby boat following similar courseThe family of the Morvillos, who have two daughters now orphaned, released a statement speaking of the 'complete devastation' felt by the their 'tremendous loss'. The bodies were informally identified when they were brought to shore and are expected to be formally identified, as under Italian law, by relatives after post-mortem examinations next week. Their deaths bring the death toll to six after yacht's Canadian chef Recaldo Thomas was found shortly after the ship went down in a storm at 5am. In a separate incident, Dr Lynch's co-defendant in his fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday. Dr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard. Mr Zagarola previously said a decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is 'not on the agenda', but will be in the future. Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of the firm that built the yacht, said it was 'absurd' that passengers on the yacht were in their cabins. He told the Times: 'Why were (they) in their cabins? 'Local fishermen saw the storm was coming, why did no-one on board the Bayesian realise? 'From 3.50am, the captain had four minutes to get the passengers out of their cabins.' He continued: 'They should have jettisoned the anchor, started the engine, pointed the bows to the wind and put the keel down. 'If they had done that, no-one on board would have been afraid, they would have been back to bed in an hour and ready to push on with their voyage.' A helicopter, remotely controlled underwater vehicles, naval units and cave divers have been used in the search. The Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank as the area was hit by a storm. Its wreckage is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres (164ft). From the Makers of Candy CrushPublished by Associated Newspapers Ltd Part of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday & Metro Media Group Hostess onboard doomed yacht in shockA pair of young hostesses who survived the Bayesian sinking have told of the terror of being ensnared by the fierce storm. First picture of billionaire’s daughterPlane crash in Thailand kills all on board‘Scary’ ordeal before man climbed out planeSouth Africans Leah Randall, 20, and Katja Chicken, 22, are staying at a Sicily hotel alongside other survivors as four bodies were recovered from the wreckage. According to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia , both of them remained in shock days following the superyacht sinking. They were spotted in the hall of the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has also become a makeshift headquarters for police and rescue crew. The hostesses are quoted as saying: “We are alive by a miracle.” Their trembling voices were accompanied by tears, seemingly unable to elaborate further amid their ongoing distress. One of them then heads to the bathroom to wipe away tears, the local paper says. She adds: “It was terrible.” The survivors don’t appear to have given the paper more details of their rescue. Leah’s mum Heidi told Sky News she was “beyond relieved” to hear her “daughter’s life was spared by the grace of God”. “It doesn’t make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives (or are) missing,” she added. “My very deepest condolences to the chef’s family as they formed a great friendship.” The Bayesian sank in Porticello after a freakish storm battered the boat. It’s believed to have capsized when it was struck by a tornado over the water – known as a waterspout. Fifteen people clung on to a lifeboat to escape the terror, but five have now been confirmed dead including the yacht’s chef, Ricardo Thomas. Two bodies pulled from the sunken vessel were confirmed to be those of Brit tech tycoon Mike and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. Mike’s wife Angela is also staying at the hotel after she survived the sinking at 5am on Monday morning when the storm hit. Italian authorities are probing whether hatches were left open by crew members, which could’ve led to the yacht sinking at speed as it filled with water. Given the forecast for bad weather, it’s unclear whether proper safety precautions were taken. Survivors including captain James Cutfield, are being interviewed by investigators , who will also ask divers and rescue crew for evidence. Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said that in light of the weather warnings the crew should have woken the guests and given them life jackets. The yacht was swallowed by the sea in minutes and the wreck now lies 50 metres below the surface. Powerful water pressure at such depth means divers can only scour the debris for short 12-minute intervals before having to rise back up. An engineer claimed there was a chance some of the missing passengers could be alive in air pockets, but a race against the clock to locate them proved to be challenging. Divers had to force their way through a 3cm-thick porthole in one area, while other pathways are blocked by floating debris. An underwater robot was also deployed to survey the wreck because it can last longer than human divers. Mr Cutfield, 51, spoke from hospital and said he had no idea the tornado was coming towards the ship. Mr Cutfield, from New Zealand, had captained luxury yachts for eight years and had previously worked on building them for 30 years. He told La Repubblica: “We didn’t see it coming.” Meanwhile Cutfield’s brother Mark told the NZ Herald his brother was a “very good sailor”. And he added he was “very well respected” in the Mediterranean. Mark said the skipper is still recovering in hospital, but managed to escape with injuries that were not “too dramatic”. More CoverageThose on board said the mast collapsed in stormy weather, causing glass to shatter everywhere and the boat to capsize. Witnesses said a 12-minute waterspout had struck the boat, bringing a furious vortex against the vessel. This article originally appeared on The Sun and was reproduced with permission Tributes have flooded in for Hannah Lynch after divers found a sixth body following the tragic sinking of the Bayesian superyacht on Monday. A plane carrying tourists has crashed shortly after taking off from Bangkok. All nine on board are believed to have died. A Jetstar passenger has described the moment a fellow passenger opened the emergency exit where he was seated and climbed out. It came as Italian authorities continued to search in the wreckage for the 18-year-old daughter of tech tycoon Mike Lynch . Mr Lynch was among five people whose bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the Bayesian, which capsized during a tornado early on Monday morning. In a statement, Mr and Mrs Bloomer’s family said: "We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy. "We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation. "Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren. "Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now. This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder. Our only ask is that our family's privacy is respected at this time." Tributes have also poured in from across the tech and business worlds for Mr Lynch , describing him as a “pioneer” and a “giant of a man”. A major search operation has been underway for the six missing people since the Bayesian sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily around 5am on Monday.Four of the missing were found dead on the wreck yesterday and brought to shore, while a fifth was recovered shortly after the search operation resumed this morning. In an interview with Italian outlet Corriere della Sera he claimed six minutes passed from when water started entering the ship to when it sunk. He has argued that the yacht’s guests should have been taken to the assembly point of the ship "as per emergency procedure". He added: "All it took was a 40-degree tilt and those in the cabin found the door high up." The CEO added that if the right procedures were followed, which included closing all doors and hatches before starting the engine and pulling up the anchor, then "the next morning, they would have set off again with zero damage". Tributes pour in from across tech world to 'giant of a man' Mike LynchLeading figures from the business and technology sectors have been paying tribute to Mike Lynch , whose body has reportedly been recovered from the wreck. Read the tributes, and about Mr Lynch’s life and achievements, here . Key questions facing investigators13:21 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks Much speculation has swirled since the Bayesian sank, with many baffled as to how the vast yacht went down in a matter of just minutes. Here are some of the questions and challenges investigators examining the sinking may be facing: Was the yacht’s design a factor? Bayesian has a mast measuring 72 metres, making it one of the world’s largest sailing yachts. There has been speculation the mast may have acted “like a sail" when severe weather hit the vessel, leaving it "pinned over on its side". Were windows and doors left open? Sam Jefferson, editor of the magazine Sailing Today, told PA news agency he suspects "all the doors were open because it was hot", causing the yacht to fill with water "very quickly". Weather records show temperatures reached around 33C the day before the sinking. Will video footage help shine a light on what happened? The Italian coastguard has reportedly visited local homes and organisations to gather footage of the sinking from CCTV cameras. Was the keel a factor? Italian media reported that divers found the Bayesian's keel - a flat blade on the bottom of yachts that sticks down into the water to boost stability - was partially retracted. Some yacht safety experts believe that may have contributed to the sinking. But a spokesperson for Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that built Bayesian, told The Telegraph: "Even without the keel completely out, the ship is stable and only a massive entry of water could have caused the sinking." Was the crew prepared? The weather event that sank the yacht has been described as a “black swan event”. But Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, has claimed human errors are responsible for the sinking and that it could have been avoided. He told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that it is good practice to have a guard on the bridge while a ship is at anchor, to look out for storms and take necessary measures. 'Moving one metre inside wreckage can take 24 hours' says fire service as difficult search continuesA spokesperson for the Italian fire service has said search teams “would need a crystal ball” to work out when the sixth and final missing person might be found. Four bodies were recovered from the wreck of Bayesian yesterday, while a fifth was brought to shore this morning. Of the six people rescue teams have been working to find since the yacht sank on Monday, one person remains missing. "We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," Luca Cari of Italy’s fire rescue service, which has been leading the search operation, told Sky News. "It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours.” Passages inside the wreck - which is lying on the seabed at a depth of around 49m - have been obstructed by furniture and other wreckage, making access very difficult. No decision yet made on whether to recover yacht - coastguardA spokesperson for the Italian coastguard has said no discussion has yet been had, regarding whether the wreck of the Bayesian will be recovered from the sea floor. Spokesperson Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency: "This is not a topic on the agenda. It will be, but not now." The wreck of the luxury, 56-metre-long (184ft) yacht is resting on the seabed off the coast of Sicily, at a depth of 50 metres (164ft). Who is missing Hannah Lynch?11:36 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks Hannah Lynch is the sixth and final missing yacht passenger who is yet to be found, according to reports. Hannah is the 18-year-old daughter of British billionaire tech tycoon Mike Lynch. She is understood to be the youngest of two girls. She was on board Bayesian with both her father and her mother, Angela Bacares, when it was hit by severe weather shortly before 5am on Monday. Mrs Bacares managed to escape the yacht on a lifeboat along with 14 other people, but Mr Lynch and Hannah were among six people who were lost in the sinking. Expert divers have spent more than three days searching the wreck, which is lying on the seabed at a depth of around 50m. They have recovered Mr Lynch’s body along with those of four others, but are yet to locate Hannah, according to reports. Hannah Lynch is a former pupil of prestigious west London private school Latymer Upper School. The £25,000-a-year school in Hammersmith counts Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant and Heston Blumenthal among alumni. She is understood to be a gifted pupil, who recently completed her A-levels and secured a place to read English at the University of Oxford. The teenager has been described by friends as a “supernova” - a gentle, kind, clever young woman who was a staunch feminist, according to The Times.Latymer Upper School said in a statement on Tuesday: “We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.” Read more here . Giovanni Constantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group , which includes Perini, has now claimed the luxury yacht was "one of the safest boats in the world". He said he believed the disaster was caused by a chain of human mistakes and that the storm had been expected, in interviews with Italian media. "The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say," Mr Constantino told television news programme TG1 last night. Citing data from the yacht's automatic tracking system and based on available footage, he said it took 16 minutes for Bayesian to sink, after it began being buffeted by the wind. Mr Constantino said the Milan-listed group has suffered "enormous damage" to its reputation, with shares falling 2.5 per cent since the disaster. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the sinking, and authorities have started questioning passengers and witnesses. Captain James Cutfield was reportedly interviewed for around two hours on Tuesday. NSPCC chair pays tribute to Jonathan and Judy BloomerThe chairman of children’s charity the NSPCC has paid tribute to Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, following news of their deaths. Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Mr Bloomer formerly served as honorary treasurer of the NSPCC. “We are deeply saddened that the deaths of Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy have been confirmed after the yacht they were on tragically sank off the coast of Sicily,” said charity chairman Neil Berkett. “Jonathan and Judy were great supporters of the NSPCC over many years, with Jonathan joining our board of trustees in 2008 and serving as the honorary treasurer from 2009 to 2016. “We remember Jonathan from his time with us as a very kind individual with a great sense of humour, and Judy as formidable and passionate. “We are so grateful for everything they did for children and the NSPCC and our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this desperately sad time.” 'We were all hoping for a miracle' - friend of Mike LynchBrent Hoberman, a friend of renowned British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, has described news of his death as “unbelievably tragic”. Mr Hoberman told Sky News: “We were all hoping for a miracle - we knew it was unlikely but you still hold out hope. "It's just so unbelievably tragic for him to go through what he went through over the last 12 years, defending his name and not really living a full life, to now for his death to be confirmed is obviously incredibly sad." Mr Lynch spent 12 years trying to clear his name after being accused by US firm Hewlett Packard (HP) of fraud and conspiracy. The father-of-two was finally acquitted in June following a trial in the US. The yacht trip was a celebration of his acquittal. His wife Angela Bacares and daughter Hannah, friends, colleagues, and lawyers who helped clear his name were among passengers on board. Body of tech tycoon Mike Lynch 'recovered from yacht' - reports09:17 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks The body retrieved from the wreck of Bayesian this morning is that of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, a source close to the rescue operation has reportedly told news agency Reuters. The source said Mr Lynch’s 18-year daughter Hannah Lynch is still missing. That would mean the four bodies recovered yesterday are those of the four other missing people - Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer, and lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo. The Italian Coastguard has confirmed to the PA news agency that the sixth and final person yet to be found is a woman. The identities of those recovered have not yet been confirmed by authorities. Photos show fifth body being brought to shorePhotos from photographers at the scene show the fifth body being brought to shore by rescue personnel. The remains were recovered from the wreckage this morning, and a fire service boat with flashing blue lights returned with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time (7.45am in the UK). The search continues for the sixth and final missing person. What we know so far08:19 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks Five bodies have been found on the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht. Four were brought to shore yesterday, with the fifth recovered this morning. One person remains missing . Search teams are this morning resuming efforts to find them. The yacht is believed to have been hit by a waterspout - a tornado over the water. Eyewitnesses say it sank within a matter of minutes, but how and why it sank so quickly has yet to be established. Search efforts have been hampered by debris that has blocked access to the yacht’s sleeping cabins. The operation has also been complicated by the angle and depth of the yacht, which is lying on the seabed around 49m (160.7ft) beneath the surface. Authorities have been searching for six missing people : British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo. Italian authorities have not yet officially identified the bodies that have been found. Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew escaped Bayesian on a lifeboat . One man - yacht chef Recaldo Thomas - was found dead at the scene on Monday. Fifth body recoveredA fifth body has been recovered from the wreck of Bayesian. The body was one of five located yesterday but divers had to abandon their recovery after night fell last night. Five bodies have now been recovered from the wreck. One person remains missing. 'The world has lost a genius' says friend of Mike Lynch07:43 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks David Tabizel, who co-founded software giant Autonomy with Mike Lynch in 1996, has paid tribute to him as “a giant of a man”. Around 9.30pm on Wednesday, after news was confirmed that five bodies had been found on the Bayesian, Mr Tabizel wrote on X: “It looks like we’ve lost our dear Dr Mike Lynch. RIP. The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.” It looks like we’ve lost our dear Dr Mike Lynch. RIP. The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man. #MikeLynch #Autonomy pic.twitter.com/eBesEwOe88 — David Tabizel (@Tabizel) August 21, 2024 Speaking to Sky News earlier this week, Mr Tabizel described Mr Lynch as “one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing”. In a piece for the Standard, Mr Lynch’s friend Rohan Silva recounted visiting the tech tycoon while he was under house arrest in the US awaiting his fraud trial, and wrote how after his name was finally cleared Mr Lynch had messaged him to say he was “exhausted” but that it was “so wonderful to be home” in the UK with his wife and two daughters. Silva said Mr Lynch is “beloved by London’s tech community”, and said he will remember him not just for his “glittering academic and business achievements” but “for his thoughtfulness, generosity, empathy and kindness”. Mr Lynch rose to become one of Britain’s most successful entrepeneurs, after founding Autonomy. He sold the firm to Hewlett Packard (HP) for £11bn (£8.64bn), generating himself an $800m windfall. But he then spent 12 years trying to clear his name of fraud and conspiracy, after HP accused him of over-inflating the value of Autonomy. The 59-year-old was finally cleared in June. He had organised the trip on the Bayesian - a yacht owned by his wife Angela Bacares - as a celebration of his acquittal. Who are the six people search teams have been looking for?Search teams have spent more than three days searching for six people who were missing after the Bayesian yacht sank before dawn on Monday. The bodies of five people have now been found, though it has not confirmed which missing people they belong to. The six people authorities have been searching for are British billionaire tech tycoon Mike Lynch ; his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch , a former London schoolgirl ; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer ; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo , and his wife Neda Morvillo .
