Powerboat Training UK

For over ten years we have trained people to fulfil their ambition to become a RYA Instructor. We’re really proud of the start that we can give instructors as they start a hugely satisfying career.

montage-instructor

We have been running instructor courses at the school for over ten years and in our time have trained many hundreds to become RYA instructors. Whether you want to become a RYA Powerboat or a Personal Watercraft Instructor or you want to instruct within the motor cruising scheme as a RYA Cruising Instructor we have courses scheduled throughout the year.

We also run courses to prepare people for their Powerboat Trainers assessment and Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner courses on demand.

Powerboat Instructor

Become a RYA Powerboat Instructor to be able to teach Level 1, Level 2 and potentially the Safety Boat course as part of a RYA Training Centre. A great way to share your passion for boating with others.

Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment

This is a mandatory requirement ahead of the Powerboat Instructors course. If possible undertake the assessment 4 – 6 weeks before the Instructor course but we always schedule assessments for the day before an Instructor course just in case you can’t make it sooner.

Advanced Powerboat Instructor

An Advanced Instructor can teach the Advanced Powerboat and Intermediate Powerboat courses and run own boat training away from the centre’s base.

Personal Watercraft Instructor

A PW Instructor can teach the RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency course and the RYA Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety course at a recognised RYA Training Centre.

Got a passion for motorboating and want to share that passion – why not become a RYA Motor Cruising Instructor? As a commercially endorsed YM Offshore you can take this 4 day course on our boats or with a specifically arranged private course.

Customer reviews

A fantastic weekend of sailing, almost 130 NM in all, with a relaxed, but fully engaging skipper. Great set up and brilliant on the admin. Thanks Stef, Tom et al!

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.

During the course, a moderation will take place conducted by a RYA Powerboat Trainer. Potentially there are a number of outcomes, 1. Is a Pass this means that subject to RYA approval the candidate can then Instruct at a RYA Training Centre, 2. A RYA Action Plan is to be followed which is time specific, the candidate follows a course of further training to enable them to get to the level expected of a RYA Powerboat Instructor this could be from completing a Navigation theory course to assisting with delivery of a Powerboat Level 2 course probably at a RYA Training Centre familiar/not familiar to the candidate which is close to where they live - there should be no cost to assisting at another Centre, 3. Follow an Action Plan and return for a re assessment. 4. Complete the course again or take up another activity.
On a successful outcome of the course the RYA issues a Powerboat Instructors Certificate subject to the individual being a current RYA member

Ideal for short passages and exploring your local waters, make the most of your time afloat with our powerboat courses

Powerboating offers the best of both worlds, the leisurely pace of a gentle cruise and the thrill of zipping across the open water. RYA training will give you the confidence and skills to handle the boat safely and make the most of your time on the water, whatever your pace.

As well as courses for recreational boaters, RYA powerboat certificates are also used by professional open boat skippers who need to prove their competence or require  professional qualifications  for work.

So whether you use powerboats for leisure, work, or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue, we have a course for you. Find out more about our powerboat courses below.

The National Powerboat scheme is comprised of a series of one and two-day practical courses that can be taken either onboard a centre’s boat, or your own. There’s something for all ages and levels of experience.

A one-day introduction to simple boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

A two-day course to get to grips with powerboat handling.

Two days of practical pilotage, passage planning and navigating by day.

Two days of planning and navigating more challenging passages by day and night.

Two days of hands-on recovery and fleet management techniques for dinghies and windsurfers for those operating in a training or racing environment.

This two-day course builds upon Level 2 Powerboat Handling skills, focussing on short-handed operations, passenger safety and comfort. Designed in consultation with the Professional Yachting Association (PYA).

Increase your confidence and get qualified with our navigation and specialist short courses.

A basic introduction to navigation for new skippers, crew or anyone interested in getting out on the water.

Get qualified to use a handheld or fixed marine VHF radio with our course and exam.

From first aid to diesel engine, there are a number of related classroom and online courses you may find useful as you develop your knowledge.

Test your skill, knowledge and experience as a powerboat skipper by taking the RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat exam.
