'Slingshot 16' is a much-improved version of 'Laura's Boat,' a 16' trimaran I designed and built for my dear wife in 2010. (She wanted her own small tri after sailing my16'-footer.) As it turned out, Laura's Boat was better than my tri in almost every way. It was quicker in light air, and just as quick in heavy air.

Slingshot 16 trimaran with 107 square feet of sail Frank is a wealth of information and always fun talking to. The fact that he has personally built about 20 small boats in the past 5 years (without previously knowing anything about sailing) and subsequently learned so much about small tris is amazing (to me anyway).
Slingshot 16 Trimaran (tandem version)
The (very satisfying) result is the "Tandem" version of the Slingshot 16. The Tandem Slingshot 16 looks and sails a lot like the single-seater version, but shares not a single panel. It has a much longer cockpit (7-1/2 feet) and a bit more beam and rocker, so it accommodates up to 400 lbs of passengers and still is quick and nimble.

Especially appealing features include building almost all the boat using 3 mm ply (1/8 inch) for main hull sides and for the amas. The bulkheads are made from 1/4 inch and the transom from 1/2 inch. This should result in a lightweight, but strong boat. No wonder Frank Smoot, the designer, has achieved 14 + mph on his slingshot 16.
Ya gotta love the combination of foot pedal steering and good hull / sail balance. Don't even have to touch the mainsheet, and both hands are for the camera,...
