  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

On September 7 at the S.B. Yacht Club’s Charity Regatta for VNA Health, guests enjoyed a splendid, full day of socializing, dining, and watching the regatta at the S.B. Yacht Club (SBYC) and on spectator boats. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event, which over the years has raised more than $2.5 million for the treasured nonprofit VNA Health (formerly Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care).

The day began with brunch at the club, where guests enjoyed ocean views, perfect weather, and steel drum music. In a short program, emcee David Moorman shared his gratitude to VNA for the care his mother received in her last days at Serenity House, remarking that in those darkest days, VNA staff had infinite amounts of strength, resolve, and resources to guide him and his family.

Throughout the day, I heard many words of praise and gratitude for the care that they and loved ones had received at VNA, a level of care that some noted far surpassed what they had experienced with for-profit institutions. Every year, more SBYC members experience in some regard VNA Health’s services, and, quite fittingly, every year VNA Health is again chosen as the event’s beneficiary.

Commodore Dennis Boneck recognized the event honorees: first responders from a multitude of agencies that serve the S.B. Harbor. Guests were introduced to Project Harmony, a program run by 9-1-1 At Ease International, a nonprofit that offers counseling and therapy to first responders and their families. In Project Harmony, healing is provided through songwriting and music. Two participants, Lois Mahalia and Hannah Griffin, beautifully performed a tribute to the first responders present.

Many guests then boarded one of the 16 spectator boats for a fun couple of hours. I boarded Torqua , Geoff and Alison Rusack’s 86-foot Ocean Alexander luxurious motor yacht, where we enjoyed cruising the harbor, watching the regatta, and socializing in the various deck and cabin lounge areas.

After guests returned to the club, the party continued with a buffet dinner and guests seated at tables on the sand, while Davitt Felder & Band provided great music. Awards were presented to the winners of the three race classes: Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Warrior ; Ole Eichhorn, Spot the 505 ; and Shawn Hughes, Picante .

Funds raised by the Regatta go to VNA Health’s charitable community programs and services.

VNA Health operates a multitude of programs, including home health, hospice (at Serenity House and in-home), and palliative care. Last year, the value of VNA’s charity care was $2.4 million, which included $1.7 million in services for uninsured and underinsured patients in these programs.

The other $700,000 went to programs it offers beyond the standard ones, such as its Loan Closet, bereavement care, and integrative therapies such as Reiki, pet therapy, and music services. Last year, VNA’s 380-plus employees and volunteers served more than 8,700 patients.

VNA Health always welcomes new volunteers, including for hospice (full training provided), music services (for those who play an instrument), Loan Closet (for those who like to tinker and fix equipment), pet therapy (owner/pet teams) and veterans’ program (for vet volunteers to connect with vet patients).

Fairytale Wedding in Russia

Fairytale Wedding in Russia

Photo by Aleksandr Neplokhov  on Pexels

How are weddings celebrated in Russia?

  • Ransoms: This tradition comes from the south of Russia. The bride is kidnapped by friends and on the morning of the wedding the groom must try to win her back. Generally, this is done by bribery but sometimes dancing or even drinking contests are held.
  • Trickery: When the hopeful groom comes round in the morning to collect his bride, some devious parents-in-law present him with another woman dressed in a wedding gown and veil or, if they’re feeling especially mean, they might even dress-up a man!
  • “Gorka!”: This one word can be heard at every single Russian wedding. It means bitter and guests chant this at the after-party so as to implore the new couple to kiss earnestly and therefore bring sweetness where once there was bitterness.
  • Predictions: After the wedding ceremony, Russians have fun by trying to predict what gender the couple’s first baby will be. Before this used to be done by bits of paper, but now the predictions are often made by text!

Rossiya—that word alone elicits images of opulent churches, resplendent palaces and breathtaking cathedrals. In summer, equally stunning gardens form blooming borders to Russia’s countless palaces and the soft trickling of fountains, tucked away in shady corners, set the pace to the lovely and long days during white nights. And, in the seemingly endless winter, the sparkling white of snow softens the edges of Russia’s formal landscapes; making for a veritable winter wonderland. A more magical setting to say “I do” couldn’t have been dreamt up. Russia is the place where fairytales really can come true.

St Petersburg

A historic city need not be very old. Such is the case with St Petersburg. The city of dreams or, more specifically, of Peter the Great’s dreams has only been around for a little over three centuries, yet its streets are as rich in stories as the ancient cities of the Golden Ring. As the seat of the Romanov family, the city’s grand squares have seen an endless stream of royal wedding carriages roll through them. Though royal weddings are no longer, partners can still declare their love for one another in much the same way as the tsareviches and tsarinas did. A visit to St. Petersburg is still perfect for a wedding. At all the palaces and manors listed below weddings of all shapes and sizes can be effortlessly organized.

Catherine Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Catherine's Palace

Photo by Dan Tuykavin on Unsplash

The baby blue façade, edged with touches of white and gold, of Tsarina Elizabeth’s beloved summer retreat makes for an ever so romantic backdrop. Its acres of elegantly structured gardens and wide, open vistas are reminiscent of Versailles. Though outdoor weddings are all the rage, it would be a mistake not to take advantage of the exquisite rooms within the palace when planning a wedding. Many of the lavish halls within the palace were designed by one of the greatest architects of all time, Rastrelli and the Amber room is considered to be one of the most beautiful rooms ever created.

For those wanting a more low-key, natural wedding, the estate where Catherine Palace is based, Tsarskoye Selo, has a few smaller palaces and pavilions on the grounds. The bright and airy halls of the Cameron Gallery, for example, with French doors opening up onto a lovely terrace and a grand marble staircase make for a simple yet classy backdrop for a wedding ceremony. While the intimate pavilion on the island, set in a forest of trees, has interiors that are almost splendid as the Catherine palace.

Yelagin Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Yelagin Palace

In the very heart of St Petersburg lies an island full of rolling meadows, flower beds and oaks. Apart from being the city’s most treasured weekend spot, it’s also one of the most popular wedding venues. Though the charming Yelagin palace is out of the reach of most Russian couples, brides and their grooms often come after the nuptials to release balloons and pose on bridges arching over the canals.

Ethnography Museum

Yes, in Russia it’s even possible to get married in a museum! For a wedding that will have a lasting impression on your guests, the majestic Marble Hall of the Ethnographic museum is sure to take everyone’s breath away. Just imagine waltzing past the rows of 24 ton rose-colored columns with a vast crystal ceiling above and a sprawling marble floor below; it’s the stuff dreams are made of.

St.Petersburg, Inzhenernaya str., 4 T: +7(812)570 5768

Marble Palace

Due to their historical significance, some of St Petersburg’s palaces can’t be rented out in their entirety; however, the Marble Palace is an exception. Built for Catherine the Great’s lover, Count Orlov, the palace was made to be as rich and lavish as possible. With three-tiered chandeliers and mirrored ballrooms, all the ingredients for a royal wedding are to be found within this rather imposing building.

St.Petersburg, Millionnaya st., 5/1 T: +7(812)595 4240

Yusupov Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Yusupov Palace

So affluent were the Yusupov family, that they were said to have more riches than the Tsar. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that their family seat in St Petersburg, the Yusupov Palace , is perhaps one of the most lavish buildings in the city. Despite its beauty, the mansion isn’t as popular with couples as other palaces. Perhaps the fact that Rasputin was murdered in the basement puts people off…

St.Petersburg, Naberezhnaya Reki Moyki, 94 T: +7(812)314 9892

In the heart of Russia, the country’s glitziest and most glamorous shindigs are held. Helipads, floating stages and musical fountains are commonplace at wedding venues. Any desire, no matter how fanciful or flamboyant, can be fulfilled: the question is not ‘how?’ but rather how much one is willing to spend.

Royal Yacht Club

Only a few minutes’ drive from the city center lies one of the most glamorous wedding spots in Russia. With a Michelin-level restaurant (which can accommodate 500 guests), chic terraces, floating stages and faultless service; it’s no wonder so many celebrities have chosen to say ‘I do’ here. Naturally, plenty of fun can be had with the many gorgeous boats at the yacht club (imagine the entrance you could make, arriving by speed boat!).

Four Seasons Hotel Moscow

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Four Seasons Hotel

The most iconic hotel in Moscow is undoubtedly the Four Seasons. Looking directly over the Red Square, it’s as central as you can get and, despite its soviet-esque exterior, it is in reality as modern as it gets, having been opened in 2014. Smoke machines, floating bouquets and ice sculptures, have all been used to make the most memorable weddings. For the wedding of your wildest dreams, trust the team at the Four Seasons to make it all come true.

Tsaritsyno Estate

One of Catherine the Great’s many ambitions was to build an Imperial estate for herself in the south of Moscow. Unfortunately, she died before she could see the surreal beauty of her pet project. Nestled within its picturesque, 405 hectares are countless greenhouses, pavilions, palaces and more that date back to the 18th century. Though the whole estate cannot be rented out, the main manor house can be fully disposed for a wedding ceremony and after-party. In fine weather, newlyweds have the option of exploring the estate on horseback or by boat and giant outdoor tents can be set up on the lawns.

Liholiho Yacht Club's 18th Street Pop-Up Becomes Good Good Culture Club; Liholiho Returns to Sutter Street in 2022

The menu at Liholiho Yacht Club in its 18th Street "pop-up" iteration has evolved and changed a bit since the original Liholiho in the TenderNob, and it's evolving some more and morphing into a new restaurant next month, with a new name.

The Hawaiian-inspired Liholiho Yacht Club — which opened on Sutter Street in 2015 to immediate crowds and closed for a remodel earlier this year — moved, ostensibly, to allow for more outdoor dining space via the team's other space in the Mission District. That space, which opened in the fall of 2019 as the Eastern European-inspired Dear Inga, has both sidewalk and rooftop space, and given the uncertainties of the pandemic, the team of chef Ravi Kapur and partner Jeff Hanak opted to use it for their proven concept while it seemed like outdoor dining would be in demand for a while.

As the season changes and the pandemic evolves, and after seven months of steady business under the Liholiho name (with some new, more colorful decor), they're pivoting again — but not with the return of Dear Inga, which was the initially announced plan. Instead, the space at 3560 18th Street is becoming Good Good Culture Club , headed up by co-chefs Kevin Keovanphang and Brett Shaw, and focusing more on Laotian and Filipino flavors, the Asian diaspora in general, and wood-fired cooking.

Also leading up the new team are Pastry Chef Kristina Garbett, Operations Chef Nana Guardia, General Manager Aimee Arcilla, and Bar Director Janice Baillon.

The team says in an announcement that Good Good Culture Club will have a "fun backyard vibe," and "This evolution will enable more creativity for [Keovanphang, Shaw, and Arcilla], who have long been a crucial part of Liholiho operations, and now will have the opportunity to transition into larger roles and share their own heritage-driven cooking and hospitality."

The Liholiho pop-up will continue running through December 31st, and the official reopening as Good Good Culture Club happens January 11. A reopening date for Liholiho Yacht Club on Sutter Street has not yet been announced, and they're only saying "spring/summer 2022."

Speaking to the Chronicle , Kapur says that the new restaurant will be like a "more lively, rambunctious cousin" to Liholiho, with more shareable small plates, and influences from across the Bay Area as well as Japan and Korea.

The opening menu is below, and recent diners at the pop-up will recognize several of these dishes, including the stuffed chicken wing, which are already being served.

yacht club 18th

Kapur also says that the team had been thinking about how to make their operations more sustainable, equitable, and livable for staff before the pandemic began, and that is a goal with the new restaurant as well — which will continue to have the brief operating hours of 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday, in part to "enable healthy and full lifestyles for our staff," the announcement says. They're also aiming to provide not just a living wage but a "thriving wage," and all checks at the new restaurant will come with a 20% "equitable compensation fee" attached, in lieu of gratuity.

"Above all, we are trying to broaden the definition of what it means to be leaders, while empowering — and sustaining — new voices. New voices who will be the future of this industry," the owners say. Additionally, the food will "celebrate the best product produced by our local farms, ranches, artisans, and fisheries."

Good Good Culture Club opens January 11 at 3560 18th Street, and reservations open on January 4 .
