Best chronograph watches buying guide: The ultimate stopwatches for sailors

From luxury brands like Ulysse Nardin and Omega to entry-level models by Spinnaker or Timex, all the best chronograph watches offer a stopwatch function for sailors while on board - particularly handy when it comes to regatta timing...

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to the best sailing watches, with timepieces designed in all different styles and with various features to best suit the wearer. But for regatta racers and serious sailors, a chronograph watch makes the best companion on board.

The function was first invented by French horologist Louis Moinet in 1816 to track the movement of stars across the night skies and was popularised in 1821 when Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec was commissioned to create a chronograph clock for King Louis XVIII to time horse races.

Derived from the Greek words for “time” and “to write”, these intricately constructed timepieces are designed with what is essentially a stopwatch function alongside a regular display. Buttons – typically located by the hours of two and four on the clockface – are used to stop, start and reset the timer, which uses an independent sweep second hand for measurements.

The best chronograph watches will also frequently feature a telemeter or tachymeter complication, allowing the wearer to calculate the speed that they are travelling at over a certain distance of nautical knots. As well as proving useful to sailors, they often seen on the wrists of pilots, racing car drivers, astronauts and military personnel.

A chronograph watch is therefore the ultimate gadget for sailors at sea looking for a range of functions that can track their progress all in one place – and still look good while doing it (if you’re not a fan of more futuristic digital sailing watches, that is).

Spinnaker Hull Chronograph Lapis

Marine watch brand Spinnaker has produced a number of decent sailing-focused timepieces, but for a classic chronograph model, opt for the vintage-inspired 42mm Hull Chronograph.

Produced in Hong Kong with Japanese technology providing precision movement, this model is also equipped with a tachymeter feature and is available in a range of different colours (though the Lapis blue is one of the bestsellers).

Tissot Seastar 1000 Quartz Chronograph

Water resistant to 30 bar, this dive-capable timepiece features a central 60-second chronograph hand, as well as 30 minutes and 1/10 of a second counters, with extra ADD and SPLIT functions for a range of complex features in one watch.

The stainless steel face is designed with luminous numerals and can be paired with sportswear-suitable rubber or metal straps with a divers’ “safety buckle”. At 45.5mm, this Tissot is on the larger side, which could be a pro or a con depending on personal taste.

Tag Heuer Formula 1

Tag Heuer watches may be designed for those who like to hit high speeds behind the wheel rather than under sail, but the brand is well-renowned for being favoured by sporty types, both amateur and professional.

The Formula 1 model offers a variety of colours and straps to suit your taste, each one equipped with a quartz chronograph complication (for timing seconds and 30 minutes) and a tachymeter function as well.

This 43mm watch is built to withstand the pressures of motor car racing and certain models feature luminous numerals as well.

It comes in three colour variations (silver, blue, black) and is available as 43mm or 40mm size with either a rubber or stainless steel strap.

The watch features a column wheel chronograph and has a central 60 seconds hand, a 30 minutes counter at 3 o’clock and a 12 hours counter at 6 o’clock.

Omega Speedmaster X-33 Regatta ETNZ Limited Edition

Best chronograph watch for America’s Cup fans

Omega has revamped its Speedmaster X-33 Regatta Chronograph with a limited Emirates Team New Zealand model in collaboration with the world’s oldest and greatest sailing race, the America’s Cup .

This grade 2 titanium-cased model is perhaps the most nuanced chronograph designed with regatta racers in mind. A run of 2,017 timepieces has been made for the series, each one finished with a Professional Regatta Function offering a countdown timer to start and count up for racing.

This advanced watch also features a logbook complication that allows two races to be timed with 10 buoy recordings each. Other features accompanying the watch include a traditional chronograph function, a calendar indication, two different alarms and a perpetual calendar.

Breguet Type XXII

Breguet is another excellent choice for watch wearers with a fascination for history; Abraham-Louis Breguet, the French founder of the Swiss brand, was responsible for finessing chronograph technology in the 1800s as the royally-appointed marine chronometer-maker for the French Royal Navy.

Sticking to tradition, the 44mm Breguet Type XXII is a self-winding rather than an automatic watch, but it features a flyback chronograph complication with seconds hands on a 30-second basis at the centre and a half-minute totalizer at the centre.

Additionally, the model is also equipped with a 24-hour indicator and a second-time zone indicator that will come in handy for sailors voyaging through the lines of longitude on longer passages.

Yachting Timers & Watches

At worn&wound we’ve long been fascinated by watches that were designed specifically for individual sporting events. This is part of a series on these unique timepieces.

Yacht timers – also referred to as regatta timers, yachting chronographs, or sailing watches – are watches specially designed and made for the countdown to the start of a sailing race. As you can imagine, starting a race on water, with entrants powered by the wind, is not as easy as lining up on a grid, Formula 1 style, or lined up like sprinters at a track meet, waiting for the starting gun. As we just saw in the recent America’s Cup races in San Francisco, the yachts (we use the term loosely in the case of the America’s Cup boats) are already at speed as they approach the starting line. The trick for the skipper is to NOT cross the starting line before the starting gun goes off. If they do, they’re penalized quite heavily (how and how much depends on the rules in effect for the specific race).

So some sort of a count-down timer is useful to the pilot and tactician. Horns signal the start of the countdown period and a skipper can start his yacht timer by the audible signal. He then has an on board measurement of progress to the start of the race, and can sail his yacht accordingly – hopefully to reach the starting line, at speed, just as the starting gun sounds.

Over the decades there have been numerous yacht timers and specialized chronographs produced by the world’s watch companies. Perhaps the most well-known yachting timer today is the Rolex YachtMaster, but there are others, past and present. Current and recent pieces include those from Tutima, Alpina, Atlantic, Omega, Panerai, and IWC, as well as electronic offerings from TAG Heuer, Suunto, Tissot and others.

But the vintage timepieces – the regatta timers of old – are what really get our juices flowing. Sailing chronographs like the Heuer Autavia Skipper, the Regate (sold under three different brand names – Aquastar, Heuer, and Tissot), Heuer’s Yacht Timer (both wrist-mounted and stopwatch form factor), the Breitling Chronomat and SuperOcean (both in regatta timing trim), the Memosail (two are on eBay as we write this), Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer in handheld stopwatch format, and the wonderfully busy Wakmann.

Regatta timers have various ways of indicating the countdown time. There’s typically a multi-colored or numbered disc rotating beneath the dial with the colors or numerals showing through windows similar to a date disc. Five vari-colored dots – usually blue followed by red (Alpina, Regate), numerals against colored backgrounds (Memosail), or a separate chrono hand coupled with colored zones on the watch’s bezel (Tutima, Bretling, Heuer) or indicating time remaining to the start via a separate scale within the dial (Rolex).

Heuer’s Autavia Skipper was part of the legendary Autavia line in the 1970s. It featured the Autavia’s classic tonneau shaped case, a red, white, and blue countdown sub-dial at 3 o’clock, a small seconds at 10 o’clock, and date at 6. Chrono pushers were in the classic locations at 2 and 4, but the crown was positioned at 9 o’clock. The watch featured a 60 minute rotating bezel, and examples are often see with a blue dial & bezel combination.

Heuer’s Yacht Timer from the 1960s came in both a wrist-mounted version and a handheld stopwatch form factor. Color-wise, regatta timer dials are never shy, and the Heuer is no exception. This watch was basically a fifteen or thirty minute stopwatch (there were at least two versions) with a multi-colored dial formatted and printed for the countdown function.

Aquastar’s Regate, also branded and sold as Heuer, Tissot and other brands such as “Racing”  in the early 1980s, used a Lemania movement with a classic five-dot/ window format, with a tri-colored rotating disc beneath the dial. five windows for five minutes, and once the timing started the colored wheel would progressively show thru the windows, changing them one at a time from blue to red to white (or silver).

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Breitling produced watches in regatta timing trim in both the Chronomat and SuperOcean lines. The Chronomat featured a center mounted minute with a multi-colored inner chapter ring. The SuperOcean used the center-mounted totalizing hand with a multi-colored bezel. These black-cased watches featured Venus 178 or 188 movements, modified to handle the unique needs of a yachting chronograph.

Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer is another handheld stopwatch format timer. The timing function is the familiar series of five windows with a colored disc beneath, but with the letters S-T-A-R-T replacing the third color (similar to the Memosail).

The Wakmann , yet another 1970s piece, looks almost too nice to have been a working watch. To us, it looks more like a dress watch for the Yacht Club awards banquet (but then, so does the current Rolex Yachtmaster II). The timer’s motor is a Lemania Caliber 1341 automatic with hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. Countdown chrono minutes and seconds are indicated by center mounted hands with orange tips. The display has a lot going on, with a date window at 3 o’clock, a white stationary chapter ring with days of the month, a multi-colored chapter ring with days of the week (moveable via a secondary crown at 10 o’clock – line it up with the correct day of the week for the current month), and a third multi-colored chapter ring outside the first two, this one with 15 countdown minutes in the first quadrant and a tachymeter over the following three quadrants. We’d be concerned about reading this in the heat of racing battle. That said, we love this watch for its center minutes totalizer, its unique display of day of the week and month, and it’s cool 1970s cushion styling.

With ultra-modern quartz-based timers available (TAG Heuer produced what was effectively a dedicated smartwatch, specifically to be worn by members of the America’s Cup Team Oracle, which relayed real-time data stream of boat performance to each crew member), and the inevitably harsh conditions of sailboat racing, these wonderful vintage racers have probably seen their heyday (one can’t imagine a skipper actually wearing a Rolex Yachtmaster II in a modern race). But their unique styling, and sheer mechanical timing abilities are works of wonder in any age. We’d wear one, even if it’s only to sail our desk into next week.

Regatta Time: 7 Yachting Watches

A number of luxury watch brands have gotten involved in sponsoring sailing teams and events. Some brands have even developed timepieces specifically suited for competitive sailing and other nautical activities, often incorporating some version of the all-important regatta countdown function. Here we run down seven yachting and regatta watches and reveal why they’re ideal companions out on the waves.

1.Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides

Corum has been making watches for yachtsmen since 1960, when it debuted the first Corum Admiral’s Cup watch, named after and inspired by the famous yacht race of the same name. The Admiral’s Cup has since grown to become an entire collection, one of Corum’s core pillars. Numerous variations on the Corum Admiral’s Cup have been introduced over the years, including the Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides . This watch’s movement, Caliber CO 277 — which Corum spent three years working with the Astronomic Observatory of Geneva and French Navy’s oceanographic institute to create — contains a mechanical complication that is eminently useful for someone piloting a boat: a moon-phase-like function that informs the wearer of how strong and how high the tides are, and when high and low tide will next occur. (Tides, of course, are affected by the moon’s relation to the earth and sun.) A hand on the subdial at 12 o’clock indicates the tidal coefficient, or range between high and low tides. A subdial at 6 o’clock tells when the next two tides will occur. Meanwhile, the 9 o’clock display tells the wearer if tides are rising or falling. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock. The Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Tides has the collection’s hallmark 12-sided case, which is made of titanium coated with blue PVD and measures 45 mm in diameter, and comes on a vulcanized blue rubber strap.

2. Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio

Panerai is much better known for making watches for use underwater rather than above the waves, but the Swiss-Florentine brand began sponsoring the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in 2005 and introduced its first dedicated yachting watch at SIHH 2013. (AT SIHH 2017, the brand took its support of sailing sports to the next level, becoming Official Timekeeper of the America’s Cup.) that The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio (PAM00526) has a lightweight, brushed titanium case, 47 mm in diameter, and is outfitted with Panerai’s in-house Caliber P.9100/R, which powers not only a flyback chronograph but a user-friendly regatta countdown function.

To start the countdown to a regatta (in which perfect timing is crucial, with all boats required to line up behind an imaginary line without crossing it), the owner pushes an orange push-button at 4 o’clock to move the central orange chronograph minute hand back, one minute at a time, until it is at the correct position in relation to the length of the countdown. Next, he presses the chronograph stop/start button at 10 o’clock, which starts the chronograph hands moving, indicating first the minutes and seconds remaining until the start, and then, when the countdown has finished, the time elapsed since the start of the race. At the end of the interval being measured, the push-button at eight o’clock returns all the chronograph hands to zero; if it is operated while the hands are still moving, it activates the return-to-zero (flyback) function of these hands, enabling the wearer to start timing a new interval immediately, without using the stop and reset buttons. The flange around the dial displays a 15-minute scale for the regatta countdown, with the five final minutes distinguished in orange, along with a tachymeter scale that is measured in knots, which enables a sailor to determine the speed of his boat over a defined distance. 3. Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Rolex Yacht-Master II — the successor to the original Rolex Yacht-Master — debuted in 2007 and introduced a Rolex-exclusive regatta countdown function that can be “programmed” from 1 to 10 minutes and incorporates a mechanical memory that allows it to be reset to the same countdown duration used previously. Once launched, the countdown can also be synchronized on the fly, enabling adjustment to match the official regatta start-time countdown. Programming the countdown is easy, by means of the rotatable Ring Command bezel , a Rolex-developed system linking the bezel to the movement.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II has a 44-mm Rolex Oyster case (available in several precious metals, in Rolex’s proprietary “Rolesium” material, or in a new stainless steel version with blue Cerachrom bezel, shown below.) The watch contains the Rolex manufacture Caliber 4161, which has a COSC chronometer certification and includes a column-wheel chronograph. For more on the Rolex Yacht-Master II, click here .

4. Alpina Sailing Yachttimer Countdown

Not everyone who owns a boat is a millionaire, and the Alpina Sailing Yachttimer Countdown is a yachting watch for those on a slightly tighter timepiece budget. For under $5,000, the owner of this watch gets a clever yachting-specific complication, namely a moving countdown window that counts down from 10 to 1, gradually revealing a red “START” indicator for the start time of a regatta. The Alpina Sailing Yachttimer is a limited edition of only 8,888 pieces. The watch has a 44-mm stainless steel case, with a see-through caseback offering a view of the in-house movement, Caliber AL-880, and comes on a black rubber strap. The price of the watch is $3’695 (July 2017).

5. Perrelet Turbine Yacht

Introduced in 2014, the Perrelet Turbine Yacht — another new complication for the distinctive Turbine collection, which has swiftly become Perrelet’s flagship family — combines the spinning dial-side turbine-style rotor with an integrated windrose function, inspired by the world of yachting, which helps to orient sailors by points of reference and the position of the sun. The Perrelet Turbine Yacht has a substantial, 47-mm-diameter stainless steel case, also available with either black or bronze-toned PVD coating. The turbine rotor on the dial, made of titanium, has 11 blades, echoing the look of a submarine propellor, and rotates above a surface with a maritime-themed parallel-line pattern reminiscent of the teakwood deck of a yacht. The windrose — according to Wikipedia, “a graphic tool used by meteorologists to give a succinct view of how wind speed and direction are typically distributed at a particular location” — is on a bidirectional rotating ring surrounding the dial. prices for the Perrelet Turbine Yacht range from $6,550 to $7,200.

6. Bremont Regatta OTUSA

The U.K.-based Bremont brand has also served as Official Timing partner to the America’s Cup and to the competition’s defending champion, Oracle Team USA. To commemorate the races, Bremont brought out at this year’s Baselworld this COSC-certified regatta timer, the Bremont Regatta OTUSA. The watch has 15- minute and 5-minute countdown displays at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour counter and date aperture at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. Bremont has incorporated into the crown a bit of carbon fiber taken from one of the foils of a 2013 Oracle Team USA AC72 yacht. The case is titanium, 43 mm in diameter, and water resistant to 100 meters. It has a transparent back through which you can see the rotor, decorated with a wave-like pattern and the words “America’s Cup.” Price: $6,895 (July 2017).

7. Ulysse Nardin Marine Regatta Chronograph

Ulysse Nardin tapped two professional yachtsmen, Loïck Peyron and Iain Percy from the Swedish Artemis Racing team (which the brand sponsors), to help design its new regatta timer, the Marine Regatta Chronograph , which debuted at SIHH 2017. The watch is a bi-directional chronograph counter that automatically begins timing the race once the countdown is complete, thus eliminating the need to hit the restart button at the precise moment when the race begins. Official fleet yacht races begin with either a five-, seven- or 10-minute countdown to the starting signal, during which time boats jockey for a position as close to the starting line as possible without crossing it and thus facing major penalties. The movement, Caliber UN-155, is based on the manufacture automatic chronograph Caliber UN-153 and has a three-day power reserve. The 44-mm case is stainless steel and has a fluted bezel with rubber inserts, molded rubber pushers, a screw-down crown and 100-meter water resistance. There are two dial variations, one in ocean blue with signature Artemis Racing yellow and the other in sea foam. There is also a limited-edition series of 35 Marine Regatta Chronographs with black champlevé enamel dials. The regular series is priced at $15,900, and the special edition, at $29,800.

A correction to your Bremont piece: Oracle was the defender of America’s Cup in 2013 and 2017. The current Cup holder is Emirates Team New Zealand. (interestingly, although Omega has sponsored ETNZ since 1995….by far the longest relationship between a watch brand and an AC team…it has never developed a regatta-specific watch , instead issuing a few “ETNZ versions” of Seamaster Diver over the years).

I agree Erik, I think these represent the best watches from Rolex (the 2 tone would be best), Bremont, Alpina and Panerai. Other versions are just a bit boring, imho.

I have a omega NZL-32 I think it’s the best looking regtta timer out. It’s a very stunning watch.

Velatura watches are powered by either the Kinetic Direct Drive (cal. 5D44), or the Yachting Timer (cal. 7T84 ) or the Alarm Chronograph (cal. 7T62 ) or the 1/20 Chronograph (cal 7T92).  Apart from features and functionality, Velatura watches are real head turners – they look awesome. The build is solid and material top-notch. Women’s Velatura watches feature diamonds which adds to the charm.  The whole series is a resounding success for Seiko.

SPC041P1 is a Velatura Yachting timer chronograph watch .  This is a men’s watch. This watch have number of features.  This watch has stainless steel case with Genuine leather band.  Time is indicated by the hour, minute and small second hands. Yacht timer combines the functions of a count down timer and a stop watch that starts operating automatically when the timer finishes counting down. This function is particularly useful in yacht racing. 5-, 6- & 10-minute preset timers are available. The timer of this watch can be set to a maximum of 15 minutes in 1-minute increments. The stopwatch can measure 12 hours in 1/5-second increments. When the measurement reaches 12 hours, the stopwatch automatically stops. This watch has two alarm mode. Single time alarm- sounds only once at a designated alarm time within 12 hours.  Regular alarm – set to sound at a designated time everyday on a 12-hour basis. Yacht timer mode features a restart setting function, which enables you to restart the measurement correctly and easily after an interruption during the stopwatch measurement. This function is particularly useful when you have to restart after a premature start in a yacht race.

This Seiko Velatura Alarm Yachting Timer Chronograph Men’s Watch has  Black pattern dial with silver white and red tone luminous hands and markers. It’s Glass is Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. This watch has Three Pre-set countdown timers (5 6 and 10 minutes). One free-set countdown timer (up to 15 minutes). Chronograph can measure up to 12 hours in 1/5 second increments. Dual Time Capabilities. The Movement of this watch is Quartz. It’s Water resistant is 100 meters. Approximate case size: 43mm. Approximate case thickness: 12mm.

This Classically Styled Watch Looks Totally Different from Most Modern Chronographs

The new Yacht Timer watch from Frederique Constant is made for timing yacht races with a clean, handsome interpretation of the chronograph.

This handsome new watch from Frederique Constant is a chronograph, but one that is quite unlike what most people associate with the often sporty stopwatch complication. More commonly seen as colorful vintage watches than among modern ones, the “yacht timer” or “regatta timer” is made specifically for competitive sailing where the five minutes leading up to the race’s official start are crucial. The new Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown Chronograph from Frederique Constant is a rare modern take on this interesting concept.

Here’s how it works. The five circles at the top of the white dial remain white when the chronograph is not in use, but activate it with the 2 o’clock pusher, and they are one by one filled with blue for the first five minutes and then orange for the next five minutes. (The blue dial version presumably goes from blue to white to orange, as quick and easy legibility is the goal.) There are various takes on the regatta timer, and the five circles were a notable one in the past from brands like Aquastar — but the same system has featured on modern watches from Frederique Constant’s sportier sister brand Alpina .

This approach leaves the dial much cleaner than those usually associated with chronographs and their multiple subdials and scales, but also adds a colorful and interesting touch. It also means that this is a chronograph that only offers measurement of up to ten minutes. Since the functions it offers require different displays than a typical chronograph, Frederique Constant uses a modified form of the common Valjoux 7750 (or Sellita equivalent) with 42 hours of power reserve and automatic winding, which it calls the FC-380. It’s nicely decorated and visible through a sapphire case back window.

Measuring 42mm wide and water-resistant to an appropriate 100m, the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown Chronograph comes in three versions. They include silver dials and a blue one, each with a “hobnail” texture, two with rose gold-plated steel cases. In steel, Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown Chronograph has a price of $3,395, and costs $100 more for the rose gold-plated models.

Affordable luxury has become the byword at Frederique Constant proving that you can have your horological cake and eat it too. Dispelling a lot of snobbery regarding the price of a well-made watch with complications, Frederique Constant demonstrates that you don’t have to flog a kidney to enter the complications market. We’ve recently seen the new and improved FC Perpetual Calendar retailing for under EUR 8,000 and today we will be looking at two new candidates in the rechristened sporty-chic Yacht Timer collection: the Regatta Countdown, a rather niche product designed for sailors, and a more conventional GMT for travellers.

The Call of the Sea

As any professional skipper knows, the start of a sailing regatta is a crucial, extremely tense moment. Trying to hold your position on an imaginary start line as you are being buffeted by the wind awaiting the signal flags and horn blasts to indicate the remaining minutes before the start of the race is no easy task. With a standard countdown time of 10 minutes, regatta racers need to be able to see the remaining time at a glance.

One of the most graphic and legible 10-minute countdown timers was the regatta calibre 1345 made by Lemania for Aquastar in the early 1970s. The movement was later taken on board by Omega, Heuer and Lemania itself. The beauty of Lemania’s automatic countdown chronograph was the colour-coded visual time remaining system with five large circles in the top sector of the dial changing from blue to red.

Essentially a reverse chronograph, Frederique Constant has adopted this five-circle countdown layout for its new Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown. This is not the first time a regatta watch sails into FC’s line-up, there was a family of Yacht Timers back in 1997 but with quartz engines.

Legible countdown

Admittedly a niche product, the latest Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown model features a built-in timer for the critical 10-minute countdown displayed in five apertures on the dial. The pusher on the top side of the case activates the regatta countdown in two steps. The first 5-minute countdown turns the colour behind the apertures from white to blue and then proceeds to the second and last 5-minute countdown as the five circles gradually turn orange.

Well-dressed on land and sea

Apart from the countdown function, these Regatta Countdown models do not have any details that suggest their nautical vocation. Ok, the chronograph pushers indicate a sporty function, but the overall look of the watch, with its “guilloché-style” dial and rose-gold plated hour markers, is dressier than any regatta countdown watch on the market today – check out this Panerai Luminor Regatta or the classic Rolex Yacht-Master II to get a feel for what countdown watches tend to look like.

The case is available in three different finishes: stainless steel with a silver dial; rose gold-plated steel with a silver or navy blue dial; and a two-tone steel and rose gold-plated model with a silver dial. As you can see, we had the steel/white dial and the rose gold-plated/white and blue dial models for our hands-on session.

The diameter is 42mm, perfectly sized for a sports watch but with plenty of elegant, polished accents over the brushed surfaces that are slightly at odds with its purported functionality as a regatta watch. The polished finishes give the watch a smart, elegant presence and there are other refined details like the brushed finish on the sides of the rectangular pushers. The case back is open and slightly domed but the lugs are tapered and curved to let the watch sit comfortably on the wrist. Water-resistance is of 100 metres.

The silver and navy blue dials all feature the same decoration, similar to the Clou de Paris hand-guilloché you would find on a Breguet dress watch. Naturally, the Breguet dials are hand-guilloché while the FC dials are stamped, but the result is pleasing. The baton-shaped hour markers are rose gold-plated and applied to the dial. The hands are also rose gold-plated and, like the hour markers, are treated with luminescent material to glow in the dark.

Another striking element on the dial of the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown is the central orange seconds hand to match the colour of the final 5-minute orange markers for the countdown. Although there are features that seem to contradict one another, making you wonder whether this is a sporty dress watch or a dressy sports watch, the overall effect is, I have to admit, quite pleasing. There is a generous sensation of space on the dial and legibility is good.

Chronograph Movement

The FC-380 movement is based on an automatic Sellita SW-500 chronograph movement with a specific module for the regatta countdown function. Beating at 28,800vph, it has a 48-hour power reserve. Industrially finished, the rotor is gold-plated and decorated with Geneva stripes.

The steel and rose gold-plated models of the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown come with a black, navy with white stitching or brown alligator strap and an additional rubber strap. The plain steel model retails for EUR 3,295 while the gold-plated models retail for EUR 3,595 . Although the two-tone steel and gold-plate model is not online, it comes with a matching two-tone metal bracelet and will retail for EUR 3,495 .

Yacht Timer GMT

Presumably, if you are an adept sailor you might even sail into different time zones and the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer GMT comes to the rescue with two new GMT watches. GMT models are not new to FC and have appeared in traditional garb in the Classics family . Although the watches are very different in nature, they share the same automatic movement. Beating at 28,800 alt/h, the FC-350 calibre features an in-house GMT module and has a 38-hour power reserve.

The 42mm case is identical to the regatta countdown model, minus the pushers, and is water-resistant to 100m and has an exhibition case back. The Yacht Timer GMT comes in two finishes: a rose gold-plated steel case and a two-tone steel and rose gold-plated case with an integrated metal bracelet. The gold-plated model comes with a brown alligator strap.

The dial also features the same “guilloché-like” stamped background, in white for the rose gold-plated model and anthracite for the two-tone.  Even the hour markers are identical to the countdown model with the exception of the hour marker at 3 o’clock which has been truncated to accommodate the date window (both with a white background) synched to the local time.

A highly intuitive and easy to consult second time-zone function is featured on an inner 24-hour ring. The central GMT hand has a red-tipped arrow and a touch of luminescence in its centre. Instead of a day/night indicator, the GMT ring features a dark area and a light area to indicate whether it is day or night at your reference time. The price of the model with a steel/gold plate bracelet is EUR 1,995 while the price of the rose gold-plated model is EUR 2,095.

Both the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown and Yacht Timer GMT are handsome, well-executed models. The dials of both models have a lot of wide-open space with no sensation of cluttering. A curious addition to the family, the countdown model will appeal to a very limited sector of FC’s customers and probably explains the slightly higher than usual price tag – even though still reasonable. On the other hand, the GMT is a practical and versatile complication for anybody dealing with international clients/travel/trade etc.

The Yacht Timer family is FC’s vision of a sporty-chic collection and it manages to kill two birds with one stone. Both watches are borderline dressy (gold-plated details, guilloché dials) with a tiny twinge of sportiness (countdown function, pushers and the lume on the hands) although you’d be hard-pressed to find any other nautically themed or sporty details. Despite the mixed message and the fact that few owners will use the countdown model in a real regatta, I think the watches work quite well. The GMT model is a cinch to consult – shame the power reserve is so low – and you’re bound to attract all sorts of inquiries about those five holes on the dial of the countdown watch.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The history of the Breitling brand started in 1884. You can read about it in the stopwatch section here .

Breitling had started with their 765 AVI Co-Pilot series already in 1953, and the brand added a first Yachting version (reference 765-Yachting-CP) in 1966, followed by a second one with a newly designed handset the next year. More versions followed in the years after: the slightly bigger reference 7650 Yachting (1969), later changed to reference 7660 (1970). All these models used a Venus cal. 178 movement.

In 1969 Breitling had also started with their ‘big case’ Chrono-Matic series with reference 7651, with an even by today’s standard huge diameter of 48 mm. Driven by a cal. Breitling 11 movement (that was developed together with Heuer, Hamilton-Büren and Dubois-Dépraz), one of the first automatic chronograph movements with a date window at 6 o’clock and the crown at 9 o’clock. And later there was also a reference 7652-Yachting version available, which again had the cal. Venus 178 movement.

All these Yachting versions have both a 15 minutes subdial, divided into 3 different coloured segments representing 5 minutes each, as well as a rotating bezel with a coloured 15 minute regatta scale.

Due to the quartz crisis in the 1970’s which has led to the extinction of mechanical watches, also Breitling did launch some models with a quartz movement. But that couldn’t keep the brand from getting into financial problems. And after Willy Breitling died in 1979 the company was sold to the industrialist Ernest Schneider. He renamed the company in 1982 in Breitling Montres SA, now located in Grenchen, Switzerland. In 1984 Breitling announced the rebirth of the mechanical chronograph by launching the famous Chronomat series, which has since become one of their leading models, using the Valjoux 7750 movement.

In 1989 the first Chronomat Yachting is launched, with the Valjoux 7750 movement (Breitling 13) modified with a 10 minute regatta countdown timer. Breitling describes this as ‘ a 10 minute countdown aperture and double indication of the final minute before the start of the race ‘ , and has filed for this invention in several patents. Like the previous Chronomat with the moon phase complication, the Chronomat Yachting retains the same model reference 81950, and various versions of it are made until the mid 1990’s.

The Chronomat Yachting   was available in a steel case, a 18K two-tone case, a steel case with 18K gold bezel or a full 18K Yellow gold case. Either with a white (ref. A107) or a black (ref. B107) dial. And with a variety of leather straps or a steel Rouleaux bracelet, a steel Pilot braceler or a steel and 18K gold Pilot bracelet.

After the Chronomat Yachting   Breitling has made several other watches with a standard quartz ETA 251.262 chronograph (Breitling 53) movement with an easy to read 10 minute regatta scale along the outer edge of the dial between 10 an 12 o’clock, as the Chrono Shark Yachting  (1993), the Chrono Colt Transocean   (1996) and the Chrono Avenger M1 (2003).

Final body found in Sicily yacht wreckage is Hannah Lynch, official says

ROME – The final body has been retrieved from the wreckage of a sunken yacht off Sicily, authorities said Friday, bringing to seven the number of people who died in the disaster.

“I can confirm it to you, the last victim inside the hull has been found,” said Cosimo Nicastro, a spokesman for the Italian coast guard.

Nicastro did not confirm the identity of the final body, but a senior Italian government official told The Washington Post that it has been confirmed to be that of Hannah Lynch, the teenage daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in keeping with protocol. Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last passenger missing since the Bayesian sank in a storm of the northern coast of Sicily on Monday.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered from the wreckage of the 183-foot yacht on Thursday. The British-flagged vessel was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday, roughly half a mile off the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello. It sank to a depth of more than 160 feet.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” a spokesperson for the Lynch family said in a statement. “They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, were rescued shortly after the Bayesian sank. The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered during initial search efforts.

Four bodies were pulled from the wreckage Wednesday. They were identified as those of two couples: Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; Judy Bloomer, a charity trustee; Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance in New York; and Neda Morvillo, a jeweler.

Friends of Hannah Lynch, paid tribute to a “warm and beautiful soul” and called her loss “unbearable.”

“Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for,” said her friend Katya Lewis, in a statement provided by the Lynch family’s representatives.

Hannah was “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind. I’ll always remember her smiling,” said Gracie Lea, her classmate at Latymer Upper School in London, which she attended.

Her teacher Jon Mitropoulos-Monk said Hannah “combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm.” He said Hannah “devoured” works of English literature, scoring high marks in her national exams, and had been due to attend the University of Oxford to study English, “a goal she had worked so hard towards.”

“I taught Hannah for four years. I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment,” he added.

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Bacares, and several of the passengers had business or legal ties to Lynch. Morvillo represented Lynch in a recently concluded legal battle. The voyage was intended to be a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal in the United States of fraud charges, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper has reported.

Lynch, 59, co-founded Autonomy, once Britain’s largest software company, and the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, among other ventures.

He sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion, but was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and charged by the United States with fraud. He was acquitted on all counts by a federal court in San Francisco in June.

Divers from the Italian fire brigade have been working daily since Monday to recover the bodies, but the position of the yacht, and its narrow and cluttered passages, complicated the effort.

After all, the 1966 collection also includes tourbillons , enamel dials , integrated column-wheel chronographs , automatic skeletons , and minute repeaters too. Well, nowe we can add one more complication to the list: the worldtimer.

By sheer association, if nothing else, these more complicated pieces raise the profile of the 1966 collection, and advance Girard-Perregaux's overall standing in the world of high watchmaking. All of that is fine. It’s even dandy. But what watch lovers really want is advancement that they can actually feel and enjoy on their wrists. Accessible complications seems to be the name of the modern game, and that's where the 1966 WW.TC (World Wide Time Control) comes in. There are essentially two kinds of progress represented in this watch.

With this version of the WW.TC, Girard-Perregaux has finally gotten the details right.

First and foremost, for all the technical prowess it displays, the G-P worldtimer chronograph series has never really done it for me; and I don't think that I'm alone here. There have been many different variations and the designs have always forced sporty looks on hardware that begs for a refined treatment. The dials are crowded and poorly balanced. They have tiny chronograph sub-dials circumscribed within loud city disks, and a seemingly arbitrary date window at two o’clock to boot. Sadly, complications, especially modular ones, need space, and that meant that the watches often required 44mm x 14mm cases. Oof.

Girard-Perregaux’s new WW.TC fixes almost all of these problems in one fell swoop. The worldtimer has shed is chronograph and date fuctions, printing is legible and spacing is balanced, with uniform font and sizing throughout, and dauphine hands add a well-deserved touch of elegance. Yes. This is what I've been waiting for.

The 1966 WW.TC in steel offers a good mix of affordability and complication.

Everything is simpler in this layout. White for day and black for night on the 24-hour disc – straightforward and effective. Even the fact that the city disc is adjusted via a second crown at nine o’clock serves these admirable, austere qualities. Girard-Perregaux is paying attention to the right details too, like unpronounced markers, a slim bezel, and a leather strap that hugs the case between lugs.

Inside the new WW.TC beats the automatic manufacture caliber GP03300. The worldtime complication is indeed modular on this movement, but an in-house module on a proven caliber is nothing to scoff at. It has a 46-hour power reserve and runs in 32 jewels. The watch overall measures in at 40mm x 12mm, which makes it very wearable, even in more dressed-up circumstances (where the design will really shine).

In rose gold, the 1966 WW.TC looks every bit the part of a true dress watch.

The new 1966 WW.TC is available in both 18k pink gold and stainless steel, with the latter holding most of the allure for me. Prices will not be announced until SIHH in January, but it looks like Girard-Perregaux might have found the right mix of complexity and affordability in the stainless steel WW.TC to give the 1966 collection its much-needed jolt. We'll know for sure in a few weeks and will have hands-on photos to go along with some deeper analysis.

Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets towards Israel today, some causing damage in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's ambulance service reported the projectiles hit several private homes and injured one person, causing alarm among community members.

Hezbollah says the barrage was in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon.

Residents of one Lebanese village held a funeral today for a man they say was killed in an Israeli attack. It comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with mediators in the region to push a proposal aimed at bridging the gaps in the Gaza cease-fire talks. Egyptian officials reportedly expressed skepticism today that Hamas would in fact accept that proposal. Talks are expected to resume in Cairo tomorrow.

Health authorities in Congo say they have recorded more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week amid an urgent need for vaccines. Congo accounts for more than 90 percent of the cases reported in Africa so far this year. Last week, the WHO classified the outbreak as a global health emergency.

African officials say Western nations in Japan have pledged several hundred thousand vaccine doses, but Congo's health minister says the country alone needs some three million doses to control the outbreak.

In Italy, divers found five more bodies while searching the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday. Recovery crews unloaded body bags from a rescue vessel in Porticello. They're still searching for one final missing person. Fifteen other passengers and crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued.

Authorities say they believe the British-flagged Bayesian, seen here in file video, was struck by a tornado on the water, which is known as a water spout. But questions remain as to why the yacht sank so quickly.

Russian officials say that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow last night since Russia's invasion in 2022. Russia claims to have struck down 45 drones, including 11 over Moscow itself. There has been no independent verification of those figures.

That comes as Ukraine digs in to defend the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine from Russian advances. Its capture would be an important victory for Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its own incursion further north in Russia's Kursk region.

In Moscow today, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ukraine's military advances there undermine any chances for peace talks.

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, infrastructure and peaceful facilities?

Ukraine's military claims to have taken nearly 500 square miles in Kursk since it first entered Russian territory earlier this month.

Back here in the U.S., the economy added far fewer jobs last year and into 2024 than previously reported. In its revised data out today, the Labor Department said that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created between April of last year and this March. That's an average of 174,000 jobs per month, far fewer than the 242,000 that was initially reported. This downgrade follows a disappointing report last month and comes as the U.S. Federal Reserve considers whether to cut interest rates next month.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended slightly higher after the Fed raised hopes of an interest rate cut next month. The Dow Jones industrial average added 55 points, inching closer to the 41000-point level. The Nasdaq tacked on more than 100 points for a ninth win in 10 sessions. The S&P 500 also ended higher on the day.

And we have two passings of note.

New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Died earlier this morning. The 14-term Democrat was a fixture of his hometown of Paterson, where he had served as mayor, before running for Congress in 1996. Pascrell was a long time advocate for emergency responders and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. No cause of death has been announced, but he had been in and out of the hospital for months.

Congressman Bill Pascrell was 87 years old.

Also today, NBA Hall of Famer Al Attles has died. As one of the first Black head coaches in the league, Attles led the Golden State warriors to a championship in 1975. Attles, seen here defending a pass in 1963, was known as the Destroyer for his particularly physical style of play.

He spent six decades with the Warriors as a player, a general manager, and team ambassador. It is the longest stint by a player with the same franchise in NBA history. Al Attles was 87 years old.

Massive drone attacks exchanged between Moscow, Kyiv: Officials

LONDON -- In one of the largest exchanges of drone attacks since the Russia-Ukraine war began, dozens were shot down in Russia and Ukraine in overnight assaults, officials in both countries said.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said Wednesday they shot down more than 50 Ukrainian long-range drones over various regions, including nearly a dozen around Moscow.

The drones over Moscow were shot down Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, local time, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Unverified videos published online showed explosions in the sky over Russia. Sobyanin said some of the drones were destroyed in the region surrounding Moscow, brought down by the city's layered air defense.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the attack in Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces shot down 50 Shahed drones and subdued 16 others in a prolonged attack -- the longest drone assault since the start of the full-scale -- officials in Ukraine said.

Ten drones were shot down around Kyiv, according to Maj. Gen. Anatoliy Barhylevych, the commander of Ukraine's armed forces. The drone assault lasted for 16 hours, from 10 p.m. Tuesday till 2 p.m. Wednesday local time, he said.

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attack in Ukraine.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv warned in an alert Wednesday to American citizens in Ukraine that "during the next several days and through the weekend there is an increased risk of both nighttime and daytime Russian drone and missile attacks."

The alert said the threat was tied to Ukraine's upcoming Independence Day and did not suggest it was connected to any Ukrainian military activities inside Russian territory .

Dramatic video has captured Ukraine blowing up one of Russia’s pontoon bridges to handicap Moscow’s response to the incursion in Kursk, where Kyiv seeks to keep its foothold.

The Ukrainian military released the footage Wednesday of the pontoon bridge along the Seym River , in Kursk, being blown to bits by a hail of bombs.

“Where do Russian pontoon bridges ‘disappear’ in the Kursk region ? … Operators, together with units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, are accurately destroying them,” Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces touted in a post on Telegram.

The video goes on to show several other heavy bombardments along shorelines in the area, including strikes against a Russian munitions warehouse and electronic warfare complex.

While the location of other strikes could not be independently verified, the Kremlin has said at least three bridges in Kursk have been decimated by Kyiv in less than a week.

The destruction of the bridges greatly hinders Moscow’s supply lines and ability to deploy its troops to fight off the advancing Ukrainian army.

It also hinders civilian evacuations in the area as more than 120,000 Russians have already fled from Kursk after Kyiv troops took over dozens of towns in the region.

Moscow has also accused Ukraine of conducting the bridge attacks with US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) , with Kyiv acknowledging for the first time Wednesday that it was in fact using the American weapons inside Russia.

President Biden had previously greenlit HIMARS to be used against Russia when defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which saw some of the most intense fighting of the war in June.

The US and other allies have previously barred Ukraine from conducting long-range missile strikes with their weapons inside Russia.

Washington has yet to respond to the use of HIMARS so deep inside Russia as part of Kyiv’s incursion, by which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hopes to establish a “buffer zone.”
