cruising yacht. Comfortable, solid, robust, elegant and fast. Sleeps nine in three cabins. Very comfortable for 4-6 person families and a good sailor (like all Dehlers).

Check out the Yacht link below for pictures and specifications.

Any Dehler 31 Owners or previous owners out there? I am intrigued by this boat and thinking seious about it. You can get a little more info about my particulars from my previous post of "To Buy or Not to Buy". The closest one is aprox. 800 Miles as the crow flies so before I fly out to look I was hoping to get some input from some of you folks that have experience with the boat. I can tell by some of the PHRF ratings that I have seen for this boat, and by looking at the relatively short waterline, light weight and fractional rig that it must accelerate readily in light air to have such a low phrf. The thing that concerns me the most is the possibility of water intrusion into the cored hull through the screws that are used to install the rubstrakes. Anyone know of any problems with this. I know that Sailing dog did an excellent post regarding first inspections and addressed the moisture meter but seems as though the boat would have to be hauled to test the hull. Most of the other issues I don't see as being too much of a problem but I am wondering about the access into the head, it seems a little quirkee from the layout drawings as well as the pictures that I have seen. Any thoughts ?

Dehler 34 review

  • Chris Beeson
  • March 1, 2017

The original Dehler 34 marked a turning point in the history of Dehler yachts. Can the new 34 do the same? Graham Snook tests her to find out and here's his review

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

See the February 2017 issue of Yachting Monthly for the full test

What’s she like to sail?

I got a pleasing glimpse at her potential speed when the apparent wind did increase into double digits. If we’d had a gennaker she would have been faster and I’d have been the proverbial cat who got the cream. The helm was a comfortable weight but the Jefa steering wasn’t as light as on other boats with a similar setup – merely a comment, not a criticism.

Sitting outboard, it’s easy to trim the mainsail from the helm, although when tacking and hardening up, it was easier to stand between the wheels and take the slack out of the mainsheet. Seated at the helm, the space is confined by the pushpit and backstay, but the pushpit does make a good backrest.

Even in a gentle breeze she was enjoyable to sail, but with a few more knots she’ll transform into something a lot more fun and involving, eagerly responding to the wheel. There is plenty of room to work in the cockpit, and sitting on the sloped coaming is comfortable, although you do have to be aware of the mainsheet, which is led up the coaming to a winch by the wheel.

What’s she like in port and at anchor?

Although the coamings around the cockpit are low, the curved area at the forward end is worth fighting for. The seats aren’t that long, at 1.52m (5ft), so lounging here is more comfortable than lying with feet overhanging and resting against a wheel pedestal.

The windlass is set below deck level but there is room for the chain to fall without piling up. The pop-up cleats look good, but there isn’t a fair lead from the bow roller to a cleat; the cheek of the roller and leg of the pulpit get in the way. These cleats could also do with rubrails on the hull nearby, to protect the glassfibre from chafe when mooring to low pontoon cleats.

Access to the shower and toilet compartment in the heads requires needless effort, requiring those in need to walk around the door like a kissing gate, rather than straight through the doorway. The galley is a little small, but the saloon and cabins are all a decent size. The aft cabin especially has a vast berth, even with the rudder post taking space from the inboard far corner.

Would she suit you and your crew?

She’s designed for people who enjoy sailing, which might sound odd because, as readers of this fine publication we all enjoy sailing. But rather than just being out on the water, a Dehler owner will know about and feel the need to adjust sail shape. Whether they’ll be doing that cruising from port to port, on short-handed passage races or racing around the cans or daysailing with family at the weekend, it matters not, the Dehler 34 rewards those who like to tweak.

Many cruisers offer more living space, but they won’t be as swift or as enjoyable to sail. Dehler is known for fast cruisers with a comfortable motion under sail and it built that reputation on the first Dehler 34, thirty years ago. This 34 is true to the original in that she sails very well, has a good turn of speed, but is still comfortable enough to cruise with your friends or family without feeling like you’re on a racing yacht. She’s not extreme in any way; she’s a good-looking, quick and enjoyable boat to sail. What more could you ask for?

Dehler Yachts, Germany's third-largest boatbuilder, went into administration today. A recent bank guarantee by the government of the state of North Rhine-Westfalia did not succeed in preventing the company from going under. Workers at the factory, located in Meschede-Freienohl (Sauerland, Germany), were informed of the situation today by CEO Wilan van den Berg. Dehler has been building sailing yachts, popular with British boat owners, for more than 40 years. I hope they miraculously rise from the ashes, as their current range has some fantastic boats.

Not entirely finished .......but lying on its back with its legs in the air. I have always like the look of Dehlers and having delivered a 37 once, thoroughly enjoyed the sail.

Didn't Dehler buy Etap a while back, too? Are they done for as well?

No doubt someone will come in buy the company lay off staff and cut corners.... I hope not to the detriment of the brand...mind you unless someone does buy the company Dehler are finished for good..!!

deep denial

considering what's happened to the British boat building industry over the past 30 years or so, I can't shed too much of a tear for one of the German mobs who profited by our collapse. Perhaps the collapse of a few more foreign companies might give an opening for a resurgence of British building? Hooray, I say. (plus I lost a very large amount of money over a bad Dehler 25 a couple of years ago, so the name has personal associations for me!)

Twister_Ken

Twister_Ken

A very innovative company in their early years, but their boats have seemed a bit me-too lately. I'd be sadder about Etap. Hope that doesn't get dragged under too.

Phoenix of Hamble

Who would buy them in the current climate? I'm afraid, IMHO the outlook isn't great for the Dehler brand....

lets see. what price some miraculous German national rescue?

It leaves me a bit up the swanny. I have a new Dehler 34 that has had a lot of problems. Dehler collected my boat in September and took it to a yard in Holland which is part of Dehler Benelux who are Dehler agents for all the problems to be sorted under warrenty. I have just heard Dehler have not paid their bill and the yard is now looking to me to settle the 10k owed. Surely the repairs are not down to me? I did not place the order. Anybody know a good lawyer or got any advise?

Not the Dehler that was in Shotley in September is it?

jhr

I would assume that the liability is against Dehler and that, as the yacht is your property, they shouldn't be able to hold a lien over it. However, I know nothing about Dutch law and I don't suppose anyone else on here does, either. I think this is one of those occasions when you should find yourself a lawyer, pdq, who knows what s/he is talking about. The RYA's legal team may be able to help?

moondancer

The yard probably wont release unless someone pays. If Dehler are in administration then it will be unlikely you will be able to get the administrators to pay. Get your boat out as quickly as possible.

I'm saddened to hear that. I liked their boats... .... and was saving up my ClubCard Points for an Etap! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am afraid you will probably have to pay if Dutch law is any thing like ours. Under our law the yard your have a lien against your boat and to remove it without paying is theft! Not good new I suspect.

Claim has resolved. OK - not good for next years premium, but what else to do ? Even to cars - it works. I had a warranty issue with Fords and they played Big Brother - we can sit this out and wait for you to fold. I went to Ins. Co. and they covered all bills and I left Ford in their hands. At least talking to them may help ? Unfortunately you'll probably find that as with most Lien - they do transfer with the boat. Wish you the greatest luck and best solution.

Go straight to a good Dutch lawyer. Maybe there's a Dutch equivalent of the RYA that could recommend somebody.

I agree - but still Ins. Co may have idea as well - all avenues in this sort of thing have to be tried ...

Watch a view of a port in Palermo , Italy , on Wednesday (21 August) as a search operation resumes after the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of the Sicilian city.

Five bodies have been found inside the wreck of the vessel that sank in a storm on Monday.

Three body bags were seen being taken to the port of Porticello on Wednesday afternoon, and the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina confirmed two bodies had initially been found, followed by two more later in the afternoon.

He said there will be an investigation in due course, but the priority was to find those who are still missing.

As the three body bags were taken back to the port of Porticello, dozens of emergency services staff were waiting, and one was seen being put in the back of an ambulance.

The Italian Coastguard previously did not rule out the possibility that those missing, including technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

Among those also missing are Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Inspections of the yacht’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning.

Divers search Sicily yacht wreck with UK tech boss among the six missing

British tycoon Mike Lynch was among the 22 onboard, celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges in the US.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello, southern Italy, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. Rescue teams and divers returned to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull 50 meters (164-feet) underwater. (AP Photo/Salvatore Cavalli)

Divers and an underwater drone are searching for six people, including a tech tycoon from the United Kingdom and an international banker, believed trapped when a luxury superyacht sank off Sicily.

Among the six missing were tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy.

How did the superyacht carrying tech tycoon mike lynch sink off sicily, one dead, six missing after luxury superyacht capsizes off sicily coast, ‘the sea has taken everything’: how rising salt is destroying italian coast, ten years of maritime resistance in the mediterranean sea.

Police divers on Tuesday resumed the search for the six people believed trapped in the hull of the British-flagged 56-metre (185 feet) yacht, named Bayesian.

The yacht was anchored with 10 crew and 12 passengers on board when it was struck by a waterspout mini-tornado, before dawn on Monday.

Fifteen people, including a woman and her one-year-old baby, were rescued. The body of one man – reported to be the yacht’s Antiguan-born chef – was found.

The passengers were guests of Lynch – sometimes referred to as Britain’s Bill Gates – to celebrate his acquittal in a massive fraud case in the United States.

Lynch, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a US federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11bn takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

Interactive_August20_Bayesian_sinking

The resting place of the sailboat is some 50 metres (164 feet) underwater – a depth that required special precautions that complicated the work. Recovery crews said they were working in 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed down their efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

The yacht was moored about a kilometre (a half-mile) offshore when a storm rolled in before 4am on Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the illuminated 75-metre (246-foot) mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappearing over the course of a minute.

The yacht’s captain survived, whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the 15 survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, said he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

“A moment later, she was gone,” Borner said. “They said they went flat on the water and were sunk in two minutes,” he added, quoting the survivors.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialised cave divers, worked on Tuesday to open up access points to get inside the wreck, which lies at a depth far beyond what most recreational divers are certified to reach. They were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search.

The divers have not yet been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm.

Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams have not verified their presence there through portholes.

Charlotte Golunski, who survived the disaster, said she momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, as did Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. Hannah Lynch, reportedly the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, is among the missing.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, had been available for charter and was notable for its massive 75-metre-tall (246-foot-tall) aluminium mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The target is: smile on your face cruising, but with potential for 2-hand JOG, fun but not winning performance. Thinking Dehler 34 VdS era. So the question is, in real world fast cruising terms, would a good 1990's yacht be noticeably slow compared ...

Joined. 8 Oct 2014. Messages. 652. Visit site. With help I replaced the rudder on my Dehler 36 CWS last week. (The pre purchase survey noted that steering was stiff at the extremes and, a long story short, I ended up with the seller buying a new rudder for me to fit). 12. Dehler...not a Dehler

Stumbled across a Dehler 34 advertised as a Brighton Dehler 34. Now some of the Sprinta Sports were built by Brighton Yachts in Ontario Canada.
