Liveaboard employment, liveaboard yacht requirements.
Working on a luxury liveaboard dive yacht in an exotic location is a unique, exciting, and rewarding life experience. Staff have the chance to live and dive in spectacular locations, encounter extraordinary marine habitats, and share their acquired knowledge and skills with guests from all over the world.
The staff requirements of each yacht are specified by the regulations of the country it operates in and her registry flag state. These regulations typically require the yacht to give preferential treatment to hiring citizens (or residents with rights to work) of the country that the yacht is operating in.
When skills and certifications are not available locally, the yachts are permitted to hire foreign workers and purchase, on their behalf, permits that allow them to work within that country. If you are selected for employment, we will assist you in this process.
The skilled positions within the fleet that may qualify for work permits are Captains, Cruise Directors, Engineers, Chefs, and Dive Instructors. Positions for Divemasters, Stewards, and Galley Assistants are almost always filled locally.
Once all the rules are followed – the reality is there are more opportunities for foreign workers for employment with the Caribbean (5 yachts), Hawaii, and Palau (2 yachts) based yachts.
There are two common management/chain of command organizational structures used on the yachts:
CAPTAIN IN COMMAND: In this structure the Captain is in command of the maritime aspects of the yacht and is also responsible for all hotel and diving operations. All crew members answer to the Captain.
CAPTAIN & CRUISE DIRECTOR: In this structure the Captain is in command of all maritime aspects of the yacht and the maritime crew answer to the Captain. A Cruise Director is then responsible for interacting with all guests and managing the hotel and diving programs. Some of the crew members report to the Cruise Director. Together, the Captain and Cruise Director work as a team. This model is typically used when the Captain and maritime team are from the operating country where English is not their first language.
When prospective employees consider joining a crew, they often only think of the glamourous aspects of yacht life. While breathtaking sunsets, amazing dive locations, and exciting ocean adventures are part of the experience, a lot of hard work goes into executing a memorable trip for our paying guests. It’s more than just a job on a yacht. We have assembled the “Reality” list below to provide clarity for prospective employees in advance of the application process.
Remember that there is no “I” in TEAM
The fact that you are about to spend the next 365 days with roughly the same people, in a confined area, does not leave a lot of room for abrasive personalities or dramatic mood swings. Cooperation, consideration, and being a team player are vital traits to creating that special environment that all Aggressor Liveaboards’ guests have come to know and expect.
There is no such thing as “9 to 5”
If you think 10 hours a day, five days a week is rough, you need not read any further. There will be times when you are rudely awakened from a well-deserved sleep to repair a broken toilet in Stateroom 10, or maybe one of your fellow crew members is sick and you have to pick up the slack. And, don’t forget, “do it with a smile!”
Even if you have experience in restaurant management, hotel management, have worked on a cruise ship, working on an Aggressor liveaboard dive yacht is a 24/7 commitment. If you don’t think you can make that commitment, this job might not be for you.
“What, this closet is my living quarters, and you share it with me?”
If you are currently living in a one-bedroom apartment and don’t think you could live in anything smaller, suffer from claustrophobia, or have problems sharing space with others, you may want to consider a land-based operation. In the crew quarters on a liveaboard, you won’t be given much stretching room or room for personal items, and more importantly, you will have little privacy.
Compensation
Working on a liveaboard should be something that you do because you love the work but also with Aggressor Liveaboards, you are very well compensated. Since you are out on the sea with room and board paid for, good financial skills allow you to save most of your salary, tips and commission earned.
As the Divemaster, your sole responsibility is not diving.
It is a huge misconception in the liveaboard diving industry that the Divemaster is only a Divemaster and all he or she does is dive, dive, dive. Though the “I am the Divemaster, therefore all I do is dive” mentality does not fly on a liveaboard, you will have the opportunity to experience some great diving, but only when it is your turn to get into the water. The rest of the time you will be helping on the dive deck, doing the daily turn down service, watching guests’ bubbles, working in the engine room, cleaning not only guests’ rooms but the entire yacht or helping the Chef prepare for dinner.
No matter what your position is, Organization and Time Management are vital to your success.
This means more than organizing the dive briefing 15 minutes before the dive time or coordinating with the Captain when the yacht will move to the next dive site. It also means keeping paperwork in order, reading it, understanding it, completing forms accurately, and even filing it in alphabetical order. Everyone on the boat has responsibilities that go beyond what is on the schedule. Managing your time will ensure that you make it to bed on time.

PADI Divemasters and PADI Diving Instructors are in more demand to work on super-yachts, but some super-yacht owners just prefer their deckhands and stewards to have at least the basic PADI diving license so they can buddy-up with them on fun dives. If the super-yacht owners just want the basic PADI diving licences then it is still very important that you get the best dive training possible. At Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao we have made a package where we include the PADI Open Water Diver course and the PADI Advanced Open Water course.
Teaching a PADI Open Water Diver course on Koh Tao
In the PADI Open Water Diver course you will learn all the basic diving skills needed to safely scuba dive up to a depth of 18 meters. In this course you will start with learning how to dive in confined water (e.g. a swimming pool) followed by 4 amazing open water dives where you will again practice the diving skills you learned before under the careful supervision of a PADI Diving Instructor and PADI Divemaster.
Please learn more information about the Open Water Diver Course on Koh Tao here
During the PADI Advanced Open Water course at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao we will take you to the next level. This course takes 2 days and includes 5 dives. In the PADI Open Water Diving course you’ll have already learned the basic skills to scuba dive safely. During the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course we now have the time to focus more on fine-tuning your diving skills/techniques and experiencing specialised diving environments. At Sairee Cottage Diving we focus on teaching you dive navigation, dive deeper (30m), night diving, search and recovery, buoyancy, how to dive on wrecks, how to use advanced underwater dive tools, underwater photography and how to think like a great diver.
Please learn more information about the Advanced Open Water Diver Course here
At Sairee Cottage Diving’s 5 star PADI IDC Centre on Koh Tao we’ve created the ultimate recreational dive package that easily suits working on super-yachts. We follow all PADI Standards as a base and then teach above and beyond this to create some of the best scuba divers possible.
This is the fist professional PADI dive course that you can take and PADI Divemasters are in high demand to work on super-yachts. The PADI Divemaster Course at Sairee Cottage Diving is a 6-week program that takes place here on Koh Tao. PADI Platinum and award-winning Course Director Marcel van den Berg has designed a Divemaster course that goes well beyond the minimum PADI Standards. The Divemaster course at Sairee Cottage Diving is a flexible program that covers different parts of the course requirements every week.
Sairee Cottage Diving Divemasters giving some of the best dive briefing
You will learn how to be an excellent “people-person”, gain customer service knowledge, cover extensive dive theory, work on swimming and stamina skills, perform an underwater equipment exchange to test stress levels, learn how to become the best dive-leader for fun dives, participate in multiple PADI “Skill Circuits”, learn how to become a great assistant on different PADI dive courses, learn positive sales training, learn environmental protection with an extensive marine conservation program, learn about PADI standards, risk management and so much more!
Divemaster one of the most awesome jobs in the world!
During the 6 weeks we have plenty of time to repeat any parts of the Divemaster course and give you extra time if needed to complete the course to the highest level of quality that is possible. But also, importantly, it allows for some time off for you to enjoy this beautiful Island and the great lifestyle here.

Becoming a PADI Diving Instructor is for most scuba divers the ultimate dream. And for most people who are already PADI Diving Instructors the ultimate dream job is working as a Dive Instructor on a super-yacht. More and more, super-yacht owners want to hire deckhands that can teach diving as a Diving Instructor and not just lead dives as a Divemaster.
As on the Divemaster course above, we at Sairee Cottage Diving (5 star PADI IDC Centre) will give you a PADI Dive Instructor Course (IDC) that will teach you way more information than just the minimum standards. As a Diving Instructor it is important to become the best that you can be and this especially applies in the super-yacht industry. Sadly enough the quality of Diving Instructors around the world can vary hugely between different Diving Instructors. This is largely due to the quality (or lack of quality) of their training. That is why we at Sairee Cottage Diving and Galileo Maritime Academy are now working closely together to help high quality Diving Instructors to get work on super-yachts ensuring that super-yacht owners get the best staff possible.
Learning how to become a PADI Diving Instructor
The PADI Instructor Development Course at Sairee Cottage Diving is an 18-day program where we show you how to teach the PADI Discover Scuba Diving, PADI Open Water Diver, PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, Emergency First Response (EFR), PADI Rescue Diver and the PADI Divemaster courses. Of course as a PADI Diving Instructor you will still be able to do any Divemaster job, and that is one of the main reasons why super-yacht owners prefer PADI Diving Instructors over PADI Divemasters if possible. At Sairee Cottage Diving we focus primarily on safety during the IDC and our Risk Management lectures and practice-training sessions have one of the highest standards in the Dive Industry, which will, in turn, ensure the highest levels of safety for your future customers.
How to be one of the best Rescue Divers is learning manage the situation in a controlled manner

Being a PADI certified dive-master or diving instructor is a huge advantage for successful career development on superyachts because each yacht needs one or more crew who are qualified to lead a dive group and to train those guests who have no prior experience of SCUBA diving.
Many “private” and “charter” superyachts spend much time around the world’s top dive sites and are fully equipped with compressors and diving equipment for reef and wreck diving expeditions. The qualified dive-master / instructors will be tasked with supervising all diving activities and maintaining the related equipment on board.

Are there any prerequisites? What are they?
There are just a few prerequisites:
You must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical condition (click here for medical form) You will also need a minimum of 40 logged dives to begin the Divemaster course, if you don’t have quite that many yet, don’t despair, you can catch up once you’re here at a very reduce rate.
You must be at least 18 years of age, in good physical condition.
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different, however most days will have some time in the water, either on a boat or shore dive, or assisting on courses. Additional time will be in a classroom. Sometimes the classroom is under the Palapa, sometimes on the beach and sometimes at a bar or restaurant. There will also be some days to yourself, and some group activities. Each day will be as much fun as you make it.
How much diving will I be doing?
Blue Magic is the ONLY internship program that does NOT limit your boat dives. If you have nothing scheduled, you are free to join one of our daily boat dives (if space is available). Remember, we have three boats, so there is (almost) always space for you!
What equipment do I need?
All SCUBA gear is included in the cost of your internship. Of course, if you have your own gear, you will be more comfortable. For comfort, we do recommend that you have your own Mask, fins & snorkel and a shorty wetsuit, but we have plenty to lend.
Once you start your Divemaster portion of the training you PADI requires that you have a timing device, a pocket mask and two signaling devices.
What else do I need to bring to Cozumel?
Whatever you need for comfort. Normal dress is shorts and T-shirts, no need to bring many changes of clothes.
What other expenses should I expect?
Our Divemaster internship program provides everything you need except food and personal expenses. Most people find that US$100 per week is enough for food and entertainment, your mileage may vary.
Tell me more about the free accommodation that’s included.
A shared room with (usually) just one other same gender intern, in-suite bathroom, hi-speed broadband WiFi, sheets and pillow, a shared kitchen, swimming pool and a huge common area with garden, hammocks and a large screen TV. All this at the Blue Magic Hostel.
What if I prefer someplace else?
We believe that staying together is the best weay to encourage teamwork and group learning, however we also understand that some of our interns prefer more privacy or have other requirements. There are many short term or vacation rentals here in Cozumel, from Luxury to budget.
Will I have any days to myself?
Yes, you will have days off to yourself in addition to the group social events.
Aside from the Divemaster course, I want to learn a specialty or two. Does Blue Magic offer any? And at what cost?
Blue Magic is a PADI 5 Star IDC center and we offer many, many specialties, including Nitrox, Wreck, Deep and others. As DM Candidates we offer special discounts. Check with your instructor about specific course prices.

Hi everyone! Anyone knows or have heard of a liveaboard in which I could do my divemaster between May and June? I am pretty flexible whereas location is concerned. South east Asia or Pacific. I have dived in many great sites, Komodo, Surin and Similan islands, Vanuatu, Maldives and just came back from Raja Ampat which was really good. Many thanks!
Hi Isa on the Tracks, I agree, a liveaboard would be a nice way to do your DM. But you need course work going on while aboard so you can do your internship, confirming that may be the hard part. For what my two cents are worth and in my experience, most divers on liveaboards are there to dive, not do course work. Sure I see Nitrox courses going on, but a rescue course? Maybe I'm wrong though. There's also the matter of cruise length most are 7-11 nights long, you'll need more than that to complete the course, more like 19-30 days plus. I guess you could do back to back trips, but again you'll need to confirm course work will be taught on the boat. Here's a thought, it's not a complete liveaboard solution, but some of the dive centers in Komodo also have 3/4 night trips, maybe you can intern on one of those, filling in the course work at the shop and on the day trips? Good luck and I hope you are able to find something that fits you needs.
Isa on Tracks: I was also wondering about the Gili to Komodo cruises, do you know some good dive shops that have both land and liveaboard operations? I am currently writing to a few of them without really knowing which one is good in this area. Most online reviews are usually from fun divers. Many thanks![/QUOT has a All 4 diving has a dive center in Bali, I think they do course work and trips to Nusa Penida, north Bali and books a liveaboard to Komodo. Bali Scuba does DM courses and they have a shop in Labuan Bajo, maybe you could split your time? But they don't have a liveaboard that I know of. You can try Wicked diving they are a budget backpacker style boat, they may do courses? I think the Gili's are mostly land based, but I'm not 100%. Good luck Click to expand...

As far as I know, no dive shops do live aboard only DMT courses. That said, just about any dive shop that runs liveaboards will let you go on the liveaboard as part of your DMT. I remember when I was researching shops in Similian Islands, Thailand most of the shops offered 1-2 liveaboard trips as part of the package. Keep in mind Flores has strong currents, I did my DMT in a place with strong current (Nusa Lembongan) and really enjoyed it as it gave a lot of experience with current based dives. Just make sure any school you're going to gets enough OW courses through the door so you can assist more than once. Enjoy your DMT!
About five years ago I was considering Pro Dive Cairns - Great Barrier Reef Scuba Diving Liveaboard Trips And PADI Diver Training Queensland . I am certain at the time they had a liveaboard internship.

A divemaster is a specific level of certification you can get in scuba diving. The PADI Divemaster program is the world’s most popular professional-level training course and gives experienced divers the opportunity to make money from their passion.
Divemasters are a key part of any scuba diving school or trip. They have specific responsibilities, including organizing the logistics of dive trips, ensuring correct boat management procedures, and assisting scuba diving instructors.
It’s common for divemasters to work in a dive center, but you’ll also find them in resorts, on cruise ships, and even on private yachts.
If you love scuba diving and you’re thinking about taking your PADI divemaster course, there are some great reasons to take the plunge.
It’s not all roses, though; becoming a divemaster has pros and cons to consider.
It’s pricey to undergo a divemaster internship, so you’ll need the funds to get started. However, there’s no need to take refresher courses once you’re done, so it’s a one-time cost. PADI also provides free online training to get you started, so you can dip your toe in and figure out if it’s right for you without a financial commitment.
As a divemaster, you’ll spend hours diving, teaching, and preparing for trips. As well as the hours out on the water, you’ve also got office hours to factor in. Overall, it’s a job with long hours, so you need to be passionate to stick with it.
You won’t earn serious money as a divemaster, and most people do it as a seasonal gig just because they love diving so much.
Even during training, you’ll learn how to work as a team and get a lot of responsibilities to handle. You’ll be responsible for the health and safety of others, which can be stressful. Be prepared to take criticism and feedback – you’ll get a lot at the start.
Divemasters are needed in every corner of the world, so you’ll get plenty of opportunities to travel and work in different dive shops. If you can speak more than one language, that’s a huge bonus and will help you get more gigs abroad. One season you could be diving in the Great Barrier Reef , and the next, you could be in a dive school in the Maldives.
It’s called Divemaster for a reason – you’ll learn how to be an expert diver and have an extremely valuable skill set.
Working in a dive shop means going on free dives. Yes, you have to work, but you still get the chance to do some of the most incredible dives in the world and add them to your logbook as a certified diver.
There are a few prerequisites for divemaster training. PADI and SSI are the most popular schools for scuba diving, and both offer excellent divemaster courses.
Each training school has slightly different requirements, but here’s what you’ll need for PADI:
This is all to ensure you have a good foundational knowledge of diving and enough experience to handle the increased responsibilities of the divemaster training.
During your divemaster course, you’ll study diving theory in-depth, including physics, physiology, and decompression theory.
You’ll also hone your dive leadership skills to the point where you can effortlessly demonstrate skills to student divers.
There are two exams:
You’ll be evaluated on your skills and your ability to control divers in real-world and open water environments. You’ll also get full training on how to conduct dive courses.
Although divemasters are paid, it’s hard to make it a full-time career. It’s great as a seasonal job, but it does tend to go quiet during the off-season when fewer people want to go scuba diving.
According to Ziprecruiter , on average, a divemaster in the US makes about $65,000 a year. However, salaries range from $20,000 to over $146,000, depending on skill level and location.
So, you’ve got your training under your belt, and you’re ready to get a job as a master scuba diver – what will you actually be doing on a daily basis? Here’s a look at some of the responsibilities of a qualified divemaster:
You can also complete additional diver training, which would allow you to perform additional duties, such as the PADI Emergency O2 Provider Instructor course or the Discover Scuba Diving Leader course.
Overall, becoming a divemaster is for anyone who is passionate about scuba diving and already has their basic training under their belt.
If you love the idea of making some extra cash as a scuba diver, becoming a divemaster will allow you to do that. Just don’t expect to get rich from this career!
Even if you don’t plan on turning your love of diving into a career, completing the divemaster training is a great accomplishment for any seasoned scuba diver and helps you progress up the certification ladder.
If you’re a passionate scuba diver and you’ve already got some certifications under your belt, it might be worth looking into becoming a divemaster. It is an expensive qualification to obtain, but once you’ve got it, it’s yours for life, and you don’t need any refresher courses.
Choose a well-known school to secure your training – PADI and SSI are the most popular, and both have fantastic divemaster training courses.
