The New F-33

The 2015 F-33 is a new design by Ian Farrier, having evolved from the F-32 , and replaces the original 2004 F-33 . It is available in several formats, the F-33 , F-33X (with wider center hull), or the more race orientated F-33R and F-33RX, plus all carbon versions, the F-33RC and F-33RXC . Both aft cabin and aft cockpit versions are also currently available.

The new F-33 is a truly modern ‘state of the art’ design, and incorporates the latest third generation Farrier Folding System ™. The third generation beams have no intrusion into the main cabin, and eliminate the awkward beam pockets in the cabin sides. Floats are as large as they can be for such a folding trimaran, with extra buoyancy having been designed in forward and low down for the maximum sail carrying power.

The standard F-33 offers more room than any other equivalent legally trailerable folding trimaran, due to efficient design, plus heavy and space robbing interior liners are not used , which also makes the F-33 the lightest available production boat of its type. The extra wide maxi F-33X is even larger again, and is easily the roomiest and most seaworthy folding trimaran in its class.

The new F-33 series has one major advantage over the original F-33, this being the availability of the narrower 2.6m (8′ 6″) F-33 version which is the largest legally trailerable trimaran available, with no permit required for US roads. The wider F-33X will require a permit to be trailered, but it has much more room and a higher load carrying capacity.

The new F-33 series has been designed with a limited ocean going capability in mind, and best of all they are true Farrier designs, so reliability is ensured.

A ‘kick back’ centerboard option is available for the new F-33 design series. This will give a ‘roomier feel’ to the main cabin, and a much larger cabin table (can easily seat 6) is now possible. The settee seatbacks can also be dropped in between settees to form a very spacious main cabin double.

The other major advantage is the ability for the board to ‘kick back’ should one run aground, and this can be a very useful safety feature in shallower waters. Board is a higher aspect foil than the standard daggerboard, so it will be slightly more effective. This will help make up for the extra slot drag associated with a centerboard case, and overall performance should be similar.

Note that ‘kick up’ centerboards are more complicated than a daggerboard, so more maintenance may be required. However, the configuration used has been very well developed and tested, and should be virtually trouble free.

THIRD GENERATION FARRIER BEAMS AND FOLDING SYSTEM:

The latest F-33 beams have been designed to trap and deflect any spray downwards to eliminate or reduce spray at high speeds, while the beam folding strut anchors are internal which eliminates multiple metal brackets and bolts. This reduces windage, weight and complexity, while folding struts are now set higher, keeping them further away from wave tops. The above drawing also clearly shows the difference between the F-33 and F-33X .

Beams are more streamlined while also being slimmer and higher at outer ends for less drag. The inner beam end to main hull connections are now fully external, for easier setup and maintenance, and this also gives a lower trailering height with less windage on the road for more economical towing.

F-33 – the standard version, legally trailerable in the USA without permit

F-33X – a wider, roomier maxi version, that will require a permit for trailering, the ‘X’ standing for extra room. The best choice for ocean work with a greater load carrying capacity, and a wider overall beam.

F-33R & F-33RX – more sporty racing versions for experienced sailors, with a taller rig, the ‘R’ standing for Race. Add ‘C’ at end for the all carbon version

F-33SR & F-33SRX – new highly powered super racing versions for experienced sailors only, with the very tall SR rig, the ‘SR’ standing for Super Race. Has a 50′ (15.24m) carbon mast, and all carbon construction is optional. Profile drawing below.

As with the original F-33, the new F-33 is expected to have a very high resale value, due to the high quality construction, and the design reputation. The last original F-33 sold did so within 10 days of going on the market, and the price paid for what was a 7 year old boat was near what it cost new. Such value means the F-33 will be a very low cost boat to own as was the case with the original F-27, which has been the resale value leader for many years.

A new addition to the F-33 range is the F-33SR or F-33SRX. These are ultra high performance versions of the F-33 and will replace the F-32SR, but with more interior room.

Comparing Trimaran Folding Systems — Part 1

JF: Can you offer some insight into the various trimaran folding systems in use by current models of production trimarans?

MW: Sure, I'll give it to you as I see it… as an engineer but also as a user — a sailor ;-)

First a little history and description…

There are two basic systems in current production… what I term the ladder-frame folding system that Ian Farrier developed, and the swing arm system used by Dragonfly Boats Other manufacturers have generally worked from one of these basic types with their own models.

The newer Telstar 28, for example, uses a modified swing arm system, which is quite different from the now obsolete hinged drop-down system of the earlier, heavy, solid deck Telstar 26. But as I've not personally seen the Telstar 28 system, I cannot comment on it directly, though certainly some of its features must parallel those of the Dragonfly.

Although designer Jim Brown used an early swing arm system with truss arms, Ian seems to be the first to incorporate a really good working system into a production trimaran. It was initially developed for his plywood Trailertri 680 and 720 series while in Australia, but then became known and appreciated in the USA with his fiberglass production F27.

For those early models (pre '86), Ian had the aka's (arms) extend into the hull deck almost to the centerline. This required large wells and recesses to accommodate them. They were securely bolted down and gave great rigidity in all directions, and ultimate security.

I remember when I first met Ian, on board his first F27 at an East Coast boat show. His son, then about 12, would demonstrate how easy it was to fold the amas in. Virtually every one coming on board would see a demo to get the picture of how easy it was. Ian soon had F27s crossing both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and his system became proven without reservation. As I noted though, his folding system back then did create some big deck recesses which took away significant interior space, and the long akas stood up very tall when the system was folded, adding nearly 2 feet more to the height of the folded rig.

As time went by, Ian must have reviewed the acting forces and worked on creating shorter arms (which also reduced the recesses in the main hull). The result was an improved system without significantly weakening the essential parts of it. A light diagonal line under the tramps provided horizontal stability to the amas and the revised design became somewhat lighter.

So the Farrier system evolved a bit, and it's clearly proven itself with the number of trimarans now successfully using it. Ian Farrier used high-strength alloy for his ladder frames, struts, mounting pivots and backing plates etc. And the arms (akas) are reinforced with carbon graphite fibers, and constructed to strict controls governed by Ian's well detailed layup plans.    After his 1974 Patent expired, the system was copied by many builders with a variety of minor changes to the original to save cost, weight and time, but not always with equal results.   ( See Part 3 for Postscript to Farriers next step)

By contrast, the Dragonfly Swing Arm system is a horizontally folding demountable system. The arms are basically formed from stainless-steel fabrications, with a streamlined cover of fiberglass, all pivoting on substantial vertical S/S bolts.   Cables are used to crank the amas in and out. Additional vertical support is commonly provided through steel wire waterstays.

All folding systems will be heavier than a simple demountable assembly. But because it's not easy to get a good attachment of the aka to the ama and main hull with single pivots, the swing-arm system can add a little more weight than even the Farrier concept.

I was once told that the difference in weight of a folding system over a demountable one was in the order of 500-600 lbs. for a 27 footer.   Part of that is also influenced by the choice to use stainless steel instead of alloy (see later).

The swing-arm system moves the hulls rearward when folded, so it increases the folded length of the whole boat somewhat. When the system is open for sailing, the inherent weakness of single pivots requires that waterstays still be fitted, just as used for demountable types. Although the system can be trailed for short distances as folded, the weight center is now well aft so the amas need to be removed from the akas and stowed separately on the trailer to better balance things and also fit within the permitted trailing width for all road trips. This is not so different from the work required for a demountable tri, and if frequent trailing is an issue, it's something to be considered.

JF: Can you offer an opinion and compare the pros and cons between the production folding systems?

MW: At first glance, there seems no competition. The Farrier system appears both stronger and potentially a little lighter. Plus, the fact that the folded boat can more quickly be on the road within the permitted trailing width. I also like the flat upper surfaces of his akas that are great to walk on. But there are disadvantages to consider also.

First, the folding Farrier-type amas turn sideways down into the water, so that their exterior surface lays in the water all the time the boat is folded (see Header photo above).   So if you need to fold the trimaran in order to fit in a standard marina on a regular basis, you will have to constantly pay attention to cleaning those amas. [In 2019, I sketched out a possible solution to this, see Part 3] .  One solution might be some form of bag enclosure, with some added chemical, to prevent marine growth. Further, the amas are not in such a friendly position to either moor the boat against a dock, or to use for walking on, compared with a system that leaves them horizontal.     Another issue is that the diagonal arms and hull mounted brackets often meet waves and this creates significant spray that make boats with this system wetter than those without such brackets.   Models do vary though.  Early Scarabs had large transverse brackets that created the most disturbance, while later Farriers with the arms raised higher, cause the least.

I have a sailing friend who finally chose to buy a Dragonfly 800, and one of his reasons was because of the fouling issue. He chose to buy his boat in Europe, and spent two summers passing through the miles of inland waterways to visit many inland cities that they link. The swing arm system suited his needs perfectly. The amas stayed horizontal in place and gave him extra walking surface, easy access to their storage space.  They were easy to moor against in confined areas and did not lie in the water with the opportunity to get dirty and fouled.

The Farrier-type system, however, is tough, easy to use and ultimately very strong. So if one is contemplating a rough trip, an ocean voyage, or can moor the boat with the arms extended, then this could be the better system for your needs. Also, if you plan on doing a lot of trailing from one place to another, the set-up time is shorter than for the Dragonfly swing arm system.

On the Telstars, geometry plays a part. Apparently, the pivots are set so that the amas drop lower as they are cranked in. (Also now true for several other systems). Although this will add stability to the hull when folded up, it will take a little more effort to get the amas there. By contrast, the amas will be easier to crank out and will tend to default to their outer position, having to provide less static buoyancy.

Either way, these production folding systems are tried and proven, and one needs to look beyond just the folding system to make ones choice of the best boat for your personal needs. The Farrier-Corsair boats, Dragonfly's and now the Telstars… are the three major current production folding trimaran designs (as per 2012). They have different hulls shapes and both feel and react somewhat differently when sailed. So it's worth trying them before making any purchase decision based on the folding system alone. For example, a local fleet of one type or the other, may also be part of your decision. Or you may need space over performance. So please note that this is just a look at the folding systems , nothing more.

Multihull of the year

The idea of a folding, habitable trimaran is an attractive one: speed, fun to daysail, enjoyable semi-offshore cruising with minimum draft, shippable by container, and all these qualities in a compact format suitable for modern marinas. Until now, Dragonfly and Corsair have been the dominant players in this market, but the sector swarms with creative initiative (sadly not always winning commercial success!) Tricat, who have built 140 boats in 22’, 23.5’ and 25’ versions, are unveiled their Tricat 30. We took one for a test sail on a nice windy day in late fall.

A more diverse production than you might think

Beyond the two most well-known brands, several builders have taken up the challenge: there was the formidable Seaon 96cr with break-taking performance, but whose production halted after just a dozen superbly-built examples; the Trimax, which never got beyond prototype stage; the Bandit 870, which is struggling to get over confidentiality and logistical problems linked to relocated production in Asia; the very sharp T29 by Pauger; or the Challenge 30 by Naval Force 3. All these likeable multihulls have qualities which are becoming rare: ease of use and great fun to use. But they have several difficult obstacles: price (small and technical production runs are costly to build); the absence of much brand awareness, or mistrust beyond a select few connoisseurs; and the premium placed on interior space, much more favorable on a monohull especially secondhand), all of which limits their distribution.

When launched in 2016 the Morelli and Melvin-designed Rapido 60 quickly established this brand as a new breed of ultra-fast, yet practical, performance cruising/racing trimaran

The Vietnam-based builder has two further models in development, at 40ft and 50ft. Both are folding multihull designs, which enables them to slip into a regular monohull marina berth and reduces storage costs when ashore.

Construction of the Morelli and Melvin design is of infused carbon foam sandwich, with beams, daggerboards and rudder made of pre-preg carbon. The central hull is configured for single-level living, with the cockpit and deckhouse both on the same level, although the Rapido 50 has a higher helm station to give a clear view over the coachroof.

Polars for this model show it being capable of well over 20 knots of boat speed across a wide range of reaching wind angles, and as much as 18 knots beam reaching in just 14 knots of breeze. The first Rapido 50 was built for delivery to an owner in Palma, Mallorca.

Rapido is also working on a 40-footer with curved C-foils and T-foil rudders. As well as offering a performance boost, without the control issues of a fully foiling boat, these allow the interior to be opened up as there’s no need for a daggerboard in the central hull.

CORSAIR F-27: A Fast Folding Trimaran

First introduced in 1985, this trailerable trimaran quickly became a seminal boat in the world of multihull sailing. Designed by Ian Farrier, a Kiwi who emigrated to California (by way of Australia) with the specific goal of perfecting his concept of a production-built trimaran with folding amas, the F-27 is both an excellent high-performance coastal cruiser and a competitive one-design racing machine. During a 12-year production run that ended in 1997, a total of 453 hulls were launched, making this by far the most successful boat of its type to date. Arguably, the boat is still in production, as Corsair’s successor design, the F-28, though it has a rotating wing mast and is generally more sophisticated, is quite similar and is built with much of the same tooling.

The F-27 is certainly not a boat for anyone interested in roomy accommodations. Though the body of the main hull flares out a great deal above the waterline to maximize interior space, the layout and furnishings are cramped and strictly minimal. There is only sitting headroom, except under the pop-top roof near the companionway where the simple galley is located. Berthing is limited: in the tiny aft cabin there is a narrow double berth, there are two narrow settee berths in the saloon (separated by a small removable table), plus there’s a tiny berth suitable for a small child in the forepeak.

Even a couple sailing alone on this boat will want to spend much of their time, weather permitting, hanging out in the cockpit or on the wide nets between the amas and the hull. As such, the F-27 serves best as a weekend cruiser with perhaps occasional stints aboard as long as a week or two. Though several of these boats have made ocean passages, they are not really suitable for long-range bluewater cruising unless you are something of a masochist.

What the F-27 lacks in amenities and comfort it makes up for in cruising range. Because it can be trailered, the boat can get to all sorts of places–inland lakes and distant shorelines, for example–that would otherwise be out of reach. And because it is so fast, it can cover a lot more ground than most boats once it is in the water. In a little speedster like this you can potentially travel over 100 miles during a long daysail. If you don’t really care about sailing fast and aren’t interested in taking advantage of this sort of capability, this is definitely not the boat for you. But if you want to both cruise and race, you should give the F-27 a hard look. Many people cruise these boats, and there is a very active one-design class.

As originally conceived the F-27 carries no bowsprit and flies a conventional triangular (or “pinhead”) mainsail hoisted on a fixed aluminum mast. In 1996 a “formula” version of the boat was introduced with both a square-headed main that carries a lot more roach and a fixed bowsprit for flying a big screecher or asymmetric spinnaker. Many of the earlier boats have since been updated with formula rigs, as they are both faster and easier to manage.

On the whole, the boat is not hard to sail shorthanded. The self-draining cockpit is quite small with the mainsheet within immediate reach of the tiller, which extends from the transom over the top of the short aft coachroof and under the raised main traveler. Other controls, likewise, are right nearby. If anything, unless you can convince idlers to stay clear of the cockpit, the boat is harder to sail with a big crew.

There is a large central daggerboard to hold the boat to weather and unlike many multihulls the F-27 is rather closewinded and makes excellent progress to windward in light air. I once spent a delightful hour beating up a very narrow channel in an F-27 in a mere whisper of breeze and had no trouble maintaining apparent wind angles of 40 degrees. In a moderate breeze the boat points as high as 35 degrees apparent and chugs along at 8 knots no problem. With the wind on the beam, if you press hard with a spinnaker up, you can get up to 20 knots, which is a thrill and a half in a vessel this size.

If there are kids aboard and you don’t want to terrify them, just douse the headsail and the boat still sails well under main alone. Or stash them all in the aft cabin where you can keep an eye on them while steering and let it rip anyway.

Here’s one way to carry a tender while cruising on an F-27

The F-27’s construction is structurally impeccable and thoroughly modern. The S-glass laminate is set in epoxy resin with a PVC foam core to reduce weight and increase stiffness. Kevlar and carbon fiber are used to reinforce high-load areas, and all components are vacuum-bagged when laid up so as to minimize voids and achieve uniform resin saturation. The patented folding ama arms are well engineered, with few if any reports of failures or problems. The amas can be folded up while motoring through the water, which is a great convenience when pulling into a marina berth. When launching the boat from a trailer it takes about 30 minutes for an experienced owner to step the mast and set up the rig without assistance. Because they are so well built these boats are not cheap given their size, but if you factor in the savings realized from being able to store the boat on a trailer, they are in fact quite affordable over the long run.

Systems are primitive and therefore are easy and inexpensive to maintain. Auxiliary power consists of an 8 or 9 hp outboard engine hanging in an offset engine well at the stern. The stove is usually a simple two-burner non-pressurized alcohol rig; the ice box (never mind any kind of refrigeration) is a loose cooler dragged aboard and stowed in a convenient nook or cranny. The boat has a 12-volt electrical system powering a few lights and instruments and probably requires some extracurricular charging from a solar panel or two if used very much. The toilet is often nothing more than a porta-potty stashed under the forward berth. To those who value comfort and convenience all this no doubt sounds unpleasant, but to those who enjoy sailing fast and cherish simplicity it should seem like heaven afloat.

Daysail Trimarans That Can Be Transported

Boats that are made for dayssailing are usually smaller, cheaper and more easily handled. They are perfect for those looking to enjoy a full day on the water in calm weather, but are usually less suitable for multiday events or rough sea sailing.

4. The Astus Models (20ft, 22.5ft, and 24ft)

If you’re looking for something small but still capable of doing day sailing, this 22.5-foot trimaran is for you. Built for speed and maneuverability, the Astus 22.5 has optional foils to optimize speed.

The modern design, coupled with the spacious interior, can fit up to four beds. Accordingly, this trimaran is suited for family outings.

The small size makes it more suitable for daysailing in good weather rather than multiday cruising, although more experienced sailors will of course push the limits of this boat.

6. WindRider 17

The 17.4-foot (5.3-meter) WindRider 17 is one of the more versatile trimarans in the market. It packs high performance for a low cost. This trimaran has a light rotating mast to boost performance, and a full-battened mainsail optimizes visibility. 

This sailboat is made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is more durable than fiberglass and demands less maintenance.

The WindRider 17 has a comfortable interior and can fit six adults. This is an ideal choice for social sailing for a couple or a family and friends. It’s easy to ride, and a shallow draft allows easy maneuverability. 

What’s the Largest Trailerable Trimaran?

The largest trailerable trimaran is the Corsair 37 , this multihull is built for single-handed cruising while still maintaining the ability to comfortably seat 6 people.

What Is a Catamaran?

A catamaran is a boat with two hulls (a trimaran has three) connected by a bridge deck. Catamarans usually offer more space than both monohulls and trimarans of the same length. The catamaran is usually somewhat slower than a trimaran but faster than a monohull. They are usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Catamarans come in all shapes and sizes. You can find straightforward sailing catamarans, perfect for those who are only starting their sailing journey. Larger sailing catamarans have become extremely popular for long-distance sailing.

There are also power catamarans, they have huge diesel-powered engines (sometimes electric) and no sails. Also called “power cats”, these boats can reach 30+kts.

Can a Trimaran Be Trailerable?

As discussed above, some trimarans are possible to put on a trailer and move to another sailing area or to be stored at home. This is usually not possible with catamarans but is sometimes possible with the trimarans that are fitted with foldable amas (the two outer “floats” or “hulls”).

Some trimarans can be trailerable, this is mainly due to the ability to drastically decrease the vessels beam, sometimes as much as 50%. This allows the trailer plus trimaran to be below the legal requirements of the road.

Final Thoughts

It has proven difficult to beat the trimaran in terms of speed. Through the ages, this type of vessel has proven to be immensely enjoyable in all kinds of sailing activities. These can range from sea adventures to waterborne relaxation in your free time.

Trimarans come in various types, foldable, for cruising or racing, etc. However, there is a common factor: many of the small ones are trailerable. This makes them easier to move than most other types of boats.

This is the legitimate heir to the trimaran revolution started by the hall-of-fame f-27 way back in 1986. the pinnacle of trimaran design, this all-new built from the ground up corsair has full boat systems, an aft cabin to sleep 5 in total, enclosed heads and standing headroom., effortless performance sailing, through detailed design.

The 880 is much more than a feature packed Corsair.  Careful attention has been paid to the fine detail.  Hugely significant is the aft cabin area which gives the boat the ability to sleep 5.  The manual or dry-bowl electric toilet is housed in an enclosed heads with overhead hatch ventilation – no smells in this new generation 28-footer.  The galley area, like the main saloon has full standing headroom, making cooking and moving about while underway a breeze.

If you are planning to install a screecher, Code-0 headsail or assymetric spinnaker you will first need to have a bowsprit and assosciated deck hardware installed. Many people are opting for bowsprits as the ease and light air performance offered by a furling headsail is extremly attractive for both cruising and performance boats.

The asymmetric spinnaker is a specialty sail used on racing boats, bridging the performance gap between a genoa, which develops maximum driving force when the apparent wind angle is between 35 and 60 degrees, and a spinnaker, which has maximum power when the apparent wind is between 100 and 140 degrees. Due to its geometry, the sail is less prone to collapsing than a spinnaker and flies from a bowsprit rather than a spinnaker pole.
