GRACE yacht interior
Designed by Terence Disdale , an award-winning designer responsible for creating some of the most renowned superyachts in the world.
Terence Disdale has had no formal training in yacht design or engineering, but despite this, he is still one of the most sought-after designers in the world.
Along with the GRACE yacht, he also has several yachts that he designed.
One of these is the Al Salamah, the 280 million dollar superyacht owned by once Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Pelorus superyacht, and the Tatoosh superyacht, a 303-foot superyacht owned by the American businessman, Paul Allen.
Onboard the GRACE yacht is an elevator, a beach club, a grand piano, underwater lights, and even a swimming platform.
Adding to this, she also has zero-speed stabilizers to keep guests and crew alike safe and stable when going out to the rough seas.
She also has full air-conditioning to keep guests cool in the hot summer. Speaking of guests, the GRACE yacht can comfortably accommodate lots of people at a time.
She can easily host 12 guests at a time by utilizing her six suite rooms and one VIP cabin, with a cabin configuration of 1 Master and four doubles.
Along with this, she can also hold up to 23 crew members to attend to the guest’s needs.
Specifications
She boasts an incredible 81.00 meters or 265.75 ft length, making her the 126th biggest superyacht globally. Adding to this, she also has a beam of 14.00 meters or 45.93 ft and a draught of 3.50 meters or 11.5 ft.
GRACE yacht was engineered using a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure.
She currently weighs around 2,306 tons, and powering this behemoth are twin 2,000hp Caterpillar 3516-B engines partnered with her 170,000-liter fuel tank.
The GRACE yacht can comfortably cover a distance of over 4,500 nautical miles at cruising speeds of 14 knots and a maximum speed of 16.5 knots.
Along with this, she can carry upwards of 35,000 liters of water, so docking constantly to refill water is not a problem in this superyacht.
Her exterior was designed by the same company that crafted her interior, Terence Disdale, who has already developed 40 yachts and is responsible for the interior designs of 76 vessels.

History of the Motor Yacht Grace
Although M/Y Grace looks as young and chic today as the princess who honeymooned aboard her in the 1950s, she is nonetheless what the French call “une femme d’un certain age.”
Although M/Y Grace looks as young and chic today as the princess who honeymooned aboard her in the 1950s, she is nonetheless what the French call “une femme d’un certain age”: born in 1928, just before The Crash silenced the Roaring Twenties, she’s surrendered none of her youth’s glamour to the scars and wrinkles of a gallant life, including a stint chasing submarines during World War II. Combat aged on her, but benefactors like Aristotle Onassis, John Issa, and Prince Rainier ensured she was kept in the style to which she was accustomed. Now, as the M/Y Grace, she plies the waters of the Galapagos Islands , once again the elegant hostess to carefree, adventurous, perfect parties.
M/Y Grace bore many names since Santiago Soulas, an Argentinean, commissioned her in Southampton. She weighed 298 tons, was 147 feet long, with a 23-foot beam and a draft of 12 feet. Soulas named her after his daughter Monica, and kept her four years before selling her to Zarch Couyoumbian, a Greek gentleman who named her Rion. In 1938, Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co., acquired and enjoyed her until 1939, when the British conscripted her for the war effort.
The War Years
The Royal Navy – well-heeled in warships – needed smaller vessels for coastal patrols and snatched yachts from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean playgrounds. Rion found herself in a Tynemouth shipyard, stripped of her furnishings and paneling. She was strengthened to carry a 12-pound quick-firing gun on the forecastle, twin 40mm Oerlikons alongside the bridge and a rack on the stern holding eight 300 lb. depth charges. The corporate crew quarters were removed and hammock-hooks were welded to the deck. The forward suite became the operations and sonar room, another suite became the radio room, and the aft suite was an ammunition magazine.
On October 21, 1939, she joined the Royal Navy with a crew of 20 under the command of Lt. T. Brydon, RNVR. She and 15 other vessels patrolled the entrances to the Solent and along the Isle of Wight: calm waters with the Germans focused on the skies. On patrol off the Nab Tower, however, a Dornier 110 returning from a bombing raid strafed Rion. She took some damage to her superstructure but suffered no casualties.
In 1940, the yacht made three 39-mile runs from Dunkirk to Dover, each time delivering 300 soldiers.
On May 26, 1940, during Operation Dynamo, Rion was dispatched to the beaches of Dunkirk to evacuate the British Expeditionary Force. She made three 39-mile runs from Dunkirk to Dover, each time delivering 300 soldiers. On her third run, a near-miss from a bomb off her starboard bow killed 14 soldiers and one sailor and left shrapnel holes in the hull. Repaired in Portsmouth, she resumed duty in the channels from Portsmouth to Southampton.
Rion’s finest hour came on November 22, 1940 with a daring nighttime capture. She was patrolling south of the Isle of Wight with HMS Shemara and HMS Valera. At 2:44 a.m. radar contact was obtained 10 miles southwest. Lt. Brydon ordered pursuit and discovered a German E-boat floundering in the swells, and Rion and Shemara opened fire from astern of the boat. The Germans returned small-arms fire but surrendered when a shell from Rion hit her bridge. Rion escorted the E-Boat to the Portsmouth Harbour naval base.
Rion had not finished yet: she discovered a submarine on the night of March 23, 1941, and made numerous depth charge runs, but the large oil slick seen at dawn was insufficient evidence to confirm that Rion had destroyed the U-boat.
By June 3rd, Rion’s port engine had been crippled, and she was decommissioned for three months before returning to duty: stripped of armaments and refitted with three-tier bunks and a red cross painted on her sides and upper deck, she became an annex to the Royal Navy Hospital. Here she remained until the war’s end, when she was rechristened HMS Noir. On October 1945 she was decommissioned and 17 months later she arrived at her original builders—Southampton’s Camper & Nicholson—for restoration. On September 16, 1947 she was returned to Sir George Tilley.
After the War: High Life on the High Seas
The royal couple honeymooned aboard the boat along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia.
Upon Sir George’s death in 1951, Aristotle Onassis’ charter firm acquired HMS Noir and renamed her Arion. Two years later, the yacht became property of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco as a wedding gift from Aristotle Onassis. The royal couple honeymooned aboard the boat—which they christened Deo Juvente II—along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia. They kept her until 1958, when a Monegasque businessman purchased her and renamed her Daska.
Crest Shipping’s charter business brought her to the Bahamas in 1960. In 1965, she joined Cove Shipping in the Caribbean as Angela, headquartered in Montego Bay. She again became Daska in 1983, before seizure by the Jamaican government for non-payment of taxes. She languished in Montego Bay until 1985, when John Issa, chairman of SuperClubs, discovered her at auction. Thoroughly refitted in Tampa, Florida, she cruised along the East Coast, bearing the name of one of John Issa’s daughters: Zein.
M/Y Zein arrived in Negril for the opening of Grand Lido Negril in 1989 and remained there until 2006, tempting buyers from around the world, including Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, who hoped to use her as a shadow boat for his mega-yacht. In 2007 Quasar Expeditions acquired the M/Y Zein and rechristened her the M/Y Grace : a name that would take her back into her history, to her most elegant times. Over the course of the next 2 years the yacht was refitted to embark her new era as one of the most elegant and tasteful yachts to sail the enchanted Galapagos Islands .

Can you tell me where the engines are located on the M/Y Grace and which cabins are most susceptible to engine noise.
Thanks for your question Stuart. The engine room is located under the Carolina/C deck, so the higher deck cabins (Suites and Master Suites on Albert/A deck or Grace Kelly Suite on Monaco/M deck ) will have less hum. Take a look at our dedicated Grace ship page for more details. Our Galapagos expert will be in touch shortly to review the ship’s deck plan, cabin layouts and ultimately help you select the best cabin for your interest.
I remember spending the evening of Captain Wynn Jones wedding aboard the Zein in the bay at Grand lido. A wild night indeed never to be forgotten.
Sounds like a great time, Tim. If we could have only been a fly on the wall during this historic ship’s past escapades. The wild she gets now is in the form of Galapagos wildlife!
We also got married on the Zein on the sunset sail with the Grand Lido in 1992. Going to Galapagos in January, would have been nice to revisit the boat, didn’t even know it was there!
Wow Susan! That must have been a beautiful wedding! Hopefully you will spot the Grace cruising the islands of the Galapagos while you are there. Have a great trip!
I spent quite a bit of time on HMS Rion in 1943/44. My stepfather Leonard George Prowse was the Commanding Officer and I had a “nursemaid”, Petty Officer Harvey, as I was only 4 years old. I remember the wardroom and the captain’s cabin, to which I was sent if I misbehaved. There was also a brass speaker on the deck which went down into the wardroom. Also my half-sister, Sally, was christened on board.
Wow, Christine, thank you for sharing. The M/Y Grace (Rion) has positively impacted so many, and what an incredible experience as a child sailing aboard this classic ship in her early days. Now in her golden years, this historic yacht sure is enjoying easy sailing among the marine iguanas, sea lions and penguins of the Galapagos. If you wish to sail again, you now know where to find her!
I was a Chef at Grand Lido Braco from 1990 to 1993, I have plenty of fond memories working in the galley of the Zein, having lots of fun with Captain Wynn Jones (May God bless his soul). Still remember having Prince Albert of Monaco inspect the ship that belonged to his father and mother, just good memories.
My husband and I were also married on the Zein on September 10th, 1996. We will be celebrating our 20th this coming weekend. Such a beautiful yacht!
I always wondered what happened to the M.Y. Zein. My husband and I were married on her December 27, 1993 when it was being used for sunset cruises at Grand Lido Negril. A Superclubs 5* Adults only resort. Captain Wynn Jones navigated her for Superclubs. Unfortunately the resort has recently been torn down and a new Royalton is being built there. We have many great memories sailing in the M.Y. Zein!
How fascinating, Carole! Thank you for sharing. Sounds like an anniversary cruise should be in order if you’re able! She’s quite the lovely vessel.
The “Monegasque businessman” referred to was my grandmother, Milica Banac, a close friend of Prince Ranier and Princess Grace. I spend many summers abord the Daska which was named after my sister, now Daska Ivanovic-Squitti. Those were the days …
Thank you so much for your comment and contribution to this story. What a wonderful connection you must have with this storied yacht! Your note really reinforces what a special history the Grace has had through her various incarnations over the years. Vladimir, if possible, please send us your email address to [email protected] . Our marketing partners would love to hear more background. All the best to you from AdventureSmith Explorations.

The Belle of the Ball Once Again: Grace, Palmetto Bluff’s Iconic Motor Yacht Debuts

In November 2023, the next chapter in the remarkable story of Grace , one of the last existing pre-World War I gas-powered yachts, began on the picturesque May River that runs through the heart of Bluffton, South Carolina. Under the guidance of The Grace Club—a newly formed founder/member sponsored, not-for-profit organization—after extensive restoration, the beautiful antique motor yacht built for the purposes of commuting across New York Harbor, returned in all her glory to her home at Palmetto Bluff. Named in honor of Grace Graham Vanderbilt, the sister of the original owner of Palmetto Bluff, Richard T. Wilson Jr., and wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt III, the iconic vessel is ready for her next act.
Grace’s story began in 1913 when Joseph B. Cousins contracted the New York Yacht, Launch and Engine Company to build a motor yacht for his personal use. Built in Morris Heights, New York along the Harlem River, after completion, the yacht was delivered to Cousins in Brooklyn, where she was used for recreation and travel back and forth to New York City. The original name of the yacht was Sispud II , and she was built in the style referred to as a Double Ender Commuter Yacht. At 60×12.5 feet, the framework was constructed with steam-bent white oak ribs with a white oak keel as the base; the planking below the waterline was yellow pine, while the above planking was cedar. Her original motor was a four-cylinder, 50-horsepower gasoline engine with a top speed of 12 miles per hour. Located in the engine room were two bunks, a toilet, and a sink for the two-person crew required to operate the vessel. The remainder of the below-deck area consisted of a stateroom with a twin bed, a salon with a dining area, and a galley.
Cousins eventually sold the Sispud II in 1925 to James Adams and his wife Gertie, owners of the James Adams Floating Theater, who used the vessel as their live-aboard while traveling the Eastern Seaboard from the Chesapeake Bay to North Carolina. The 800-seat floating theater was built on a barge and pulled along the waterway by tugboats to coastal towns of the South, bringing music, shows, and vaudeville acts to isolated areas.
In 1926, Edna Ferber, a noted novelist, traveled with the theater during the summer season and wrote the novel, Show Boat , based on her experiences traveling with the troupe and living aboard Sispud II . The novel became an award-winning Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway show and later a motion picture. Adams sold his interest in the theater to his brother in 1930, but continued ownership of the yacht.
Sispud II had two additional owners: Dr. Jay Paul Jeter, a dentist from Philadelphia (1937-1960) and Richard M. Tunis from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (1960-1963). In 1963, Henry and Stella Szablewski from Lansdale, Pennsylvania, purchased Sispud II and renamed the vessel Acquilla from the Latin for “Eagle.” They sailed her in Chesapeake Bay but, after Henry’s death, Stella could not manage the vessel herself and eventually abandoned her at Swan Creek Marina in Rock Hall, Maryland in 1980.
In 1990, Earl McMillen, III of Newport, Rhode Island, owner of McMillen Yachts, Inc. which restored and maintained a fleet of classic wooden ships, found Acquilla being used as an out-of-water residence. After learning that The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia was looking for such a yacht, McMillen’s team undertook a two-year restoration project, finishing in 1996. Acquilla was renamed Zapala , in homage to the name of the personal yacht of The Cloister’s developer, Harry Coffin, in the 1920s.
After Palmetto Bluff opened in 2004, the community was looking for a period piece from the Wilson Family era at the turn of the century until 1926. As the yacht was built in 1913—two years before the Wilson mansion was completed—it was a perfect fit. Palmetto Bluff purchased the yacht in 2004, and the vessel was renamed Grace , after the youngest sister of R.T. Wilson, Jr., the wealthy New Yorker who purchased the 18,000 acres he named Palmetto Bluff in 1902. The vessel’s namesake, Grace Graham Wilson, was married to Cornelius (“Neily”) Vanderbilt III and was a society hostess in New York and Newport. For 15+ years, Grace provided a unique member experience on the May River, affording guests incredible views of the property, the Town of Bluffton, and surrounding waterways.
In December 2020, Grace experienced a main engine overheat which caused a cracked block, beginning a period of slow deterioration which resulted in the yacht being placed on land. In December 2022, a Palmetto Bluff Club member formed Operation Saving Grace to find a path forward towards putting her back into service. In partnership with Southstreet Partners, one of the largest owners and operators of private residential club and resort communities in the United States (including Kiawah Island, Palmetto Bluff, The Cliffs, Naples Grande, Barnsley Resort and Residences at Salamander) and the management team of the Palmetto Bluff Club, they worked collaboratively for the past year toward this shared objective. Built on the solid foundation of the partnership structure that was created between The Grace Club founders and Southstreet, a full-speed-ahead approach to restoring Grace was adopted. Restoration work included replacing the engine, repairing hull damage, refinishing and repainting the hull and exterior, refinishing the interior, replacing the navigation system, and acquiring recertification by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Grace Club requested the use of purpleheart wood, renowned for its durability and rot resistance, to use in Grace’s restoration. Southstreet’s commitment to the endeavor included transferring title of Grace to The Grace Club, providing long-term, rent-free access to the Grace Dock, and supplying ongoing marketing and communications support for The Grace Club operations.
“ Grace is an elegant and iconic motor yacht with a storied background and rich history spanning 110 years. A dedicated group of homeowners felt compelled to bring her back into service for the benefit of our neighbors and the larger Bluffton community,” Lee Leonard, president of The Grace Club said. “Working together with Southstreet Partners, a group of Palmetto Bluff members formed Operation Saving Grace, to return her to her full glory. I’m proud to say she is standing tall and became available for scheduled cruises, as well as private charters, in November of 2023.”
“We are grateful to The Grace Club for their dedication and partnership in protecting Grace —one of Palmetto Bluff’s iconic symbols—and we are happy to have been able to support this worthy endeavor,” Rob Duckett, president of operations for Southstreet Partners said.
The Grace Club will provide operational oversight and have responsibility for all maintenance of Grace . Their primary goal will be to operate Grace for the benefit of all Palmetto Bluff members and their families, Montage hotel guests, and the greater Bluffton community including charitable organizations and youth groups.
